You can try using p3droid's root process from this website: http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/droid-bionic-forum/9800-how-get-your-phone-back-upgrade-path.html post #2
You can also try using the program from this site: http://droidmodderx.com/bionic/too-easy-unbrick-bionic-with-oneclick-fastboot-restore/

Are you sure the second link in the previous post (same as here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279825) didn't work on XP?
Here is my story:
I was running the stock rom,
was rooted using the "one-click" method,
updated via OTA to .893,
and lost root.
So, using the instructions I posted above,
flashed the rom to stock,
rooted,
forever rooted,
then applied the OTA update to .893.
I still have root and am at .893. To be honest, it was pretty painless considering how things can go.
My only caveat is that I did this from Ubuntu Linux, but I would be shocked if WinXP wasn't working.

That thread worked great! I had rooted previously, but lost proper root with the OTA update. The zerg method worked and now I have root back.
Now I'm just wondering if that will keep the forever root...If I figure it out, I'll repost here.

Forever root needed afterward. We'll see if everything holds once the 901 update comes out.
i was rooted on 5.8.894 and updated to 5.9.901 and it broke my root so i though no big deal "i'll just reroot". i tried R3l3AS3DRoot, Pete's Motorola Root Tools and manual root method. no dice. can anyone offer any help?

Hello my name is slawson [zfxp on irc]
This is my root guide, how i've rooted every droid i've had so far.
This works with NO COMPUTERS NEEDED!
Also works on
2.0.0, 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.2
A. Download z4root from market
B. Install and run "z4root", click "permanent root"
B1. If all goes well it will say you're rooted.
C. Reboot your phone.
D. Open Market find, and install "Rom Manager"
D1. After Installed open rom manager, and grant su access, now click "Flash recovery rom" it will be the first option in the list.
D2. it will say Recovery flashed after all options have been selected.
D3. Download your favorite rom, and copy it to the root of your sd card.
E. Reboot into Recovery
E1. Wipe data/clear cache
E2. Install zip from sdcard
F. ENJOY YOUR FLASHED DROID!
Thanks goes out to all the devs who helped make this happen!
Tested working:
Droid 2.0
Droid 2.0.1
Droid 2.1
Droid 2.2 FRG01B
Droid 2.2 FRG22D
**Also tested working on htc g1, MyTouch3g v1.2[/SIZE]
Will this work with 2.2 Froyo? Noob Here.
Yep works flawlessly!
Ok Im good so far...How do I grant su access?

So far so good. But, how can you tell what the roms look like?
Thank you Slawson, and especially whoever/whomever wrote universandroot!
Worked great! I was running stock froyo 2.2 ,updated OTA , but now I'm rooted again and don't plan on unrooting. Hopefully no issues in future like some had using other apps.
Saw this earlier an dl'd to phone but didn't get chance to try it till got off work. I was getting aggrivated at frg01b not allowing me to install sbf recovery so I could get back root after OTA.
As you said now on to the ROM's.
Couple of questions: Does this work on the Droid? Once rooted, can setcpu be added to overclock or do I have to load a custom rom? What about using Autokiller? Thanks for the info and for making it so easy to root!!

1st - Yes, I have moto droid 1
2nd - Yes, have installed SetCPU without custom ROM and have set it up to overclock but tops out at 800mhz on mine, probably because stock kernel. ROM is next for me this weekend.
3rd - Yes, Also have installed AutoKiller.
Have fun!!
does it allow u to unroot as well?

However, what about the FRG22 build? From what I've read, it doesn't work with that 2.2 yet. Also, VZW has slated it to be OTA soon.
If that happens, won't we all lose out root?

EDIT: My bad for not following the instructions EXACTLY AKA using your link to download.
Universal Androot + Froyo FRG22D = Fail.
The exploit for root was patched in this Froyo build to my knowledge.
As of this posting no version of Universal AndRoot will work or any 1click root app for that matter.
But there are still ways to root.

Something about this just does not sound right to me.
If RomManager had the ability to push a recovery on any device we would never have had the need to use RSD Lite to push the 2.01 spf in the first place. Rooting is easy enough overall. The Recovery is what takes effort.
When you tested this had you ever tried to unlock your phone in the past via RSD Lite or other method?
Nope it had never been rooted before, and this was my first attempt, and it just so happened to work.
So try it before you knock it, or don't post

No, I rather have an intelligent discussion about the process so that people can read and be well informed
I can't test it because my Droid already has the hacked bootloader. Once that is done you can flash recoveries all day, hence why I asked to begin with.
As I understand the technology pushing the recovery requires more than just root access. So you can understand why I would ask about the details.
I hope you are right btw. It would make my next Droid 1 rom loading so much easier.
Honestly, my droid was brand new, i used this method with a mytouch3g so i figured i'd give it a shot with my droid, and it worked, and i saw the previous method of rooting with the droid, and i decided to post, as this was so much easier.
But yeah, a healthy convo is needed to pick the brains of others.
Worked perfect for me rooting my roomie's Moto Droid 1. Installed Ultimate Droid 7, custom kernel and SetCPU and OC'd to 1.1ghz

I posted it. Again I'm not 100% sure on this, but I don't think this method will work. The retain root on ATT atrix works because we are UPDATING the firmware through the official ATT channel, nothing is being deleted or changed at all except for the update. This allows us to move the SU application, update, then move the SU application back in so it works (that's an elementary understanding).
An SBF is different. It clears all of the system memory, including all apps. So not only can you not move SU and move it back, but SU is deleted altogether when the SBF is flashed. This is why you have to flash to 1.26, run root, run beforeupdate, upgrade to 1.57, run afterupdate in order to get root. We don't have a way to root 1.57, merely a way to retain root while upgrading.
EDIT: And this post has just been proven obsolete by Ririal in another thread. It looks like there is a new root method, that works on 1.57. I'm sure someone could try this out on the new SBF

Hello I have a droid x2 and I am running CM7 however my wife has finally given in and wants her Bionic rooted so I can remove all the bloat. I am curious I am seeing that the only way is the manual root? I have never used ADB before and I was hoping there is another way. I downloaded the for3ver zip but did not see the run.bat file I was looking for. Any help would be appreciated!! Also I installed the bootstrap in the sticky I am sure as usual make a nano back up as soon as I getg rooted.
Edit.. got it rooted
Can you post what you did in order to get rooted? Im new to this phone and im having some trouble
My wife's phone was on. 893 I used this and it was very easy. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1279825
Just download both files extract them do the exploit zip first then the 4 everroot and pick your option to root. I looked at theblink again and do not see the first exploit I flashed. I will have to check my wife's phone and see what I put on her SD card

Actually that is the thread I used it has the exploit first. Very easy. Once rooted I suggest making a nano back up of your stock rooted rom. That way if you do something wrong you can easily get back.
Edit: There seems to have been a utility created to automate most of this process. I have not tried, check it out.

Hey guys, took me quite a bit of time perusing the cheesecake thread to figure this out, so I figured I would do my best to put all the info in one post.
First, you want to flash back to stock ICS. I had apps frozen etc. and was getting errors installing jellybean, so do this first.
Step 1: Download & install Motorola drivers - https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481/~/drivers
Edit: Steps 2-8 might be able to be shipped if you are on stock ICS, but if you get an error flashing Jellybean, try to reflash.
Step 2: Download & install RSD lite 6.14(Users noting newer versions not working) http://www.mediafire.com/?yw9dh89jtqii71e
Step 3: Download Latest stock ICS: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/dinara/7.7.1Q-144_MB886_MR1-22_SIGNED_CFC.xml.zip (Thanks Huatz84)
Step 4: Download Edited XML file:https://www.box.com/s/oo8vcdv7lkyf6n51el6i (Thanks Huatz84)
Step 5: Extract .zip file, and overwrite the XML file with the one downloaded above.
Step 6: Launch RSD lite and select the modified XML file located within the folder you extracted
Step 7: Turn off phone, and boot into bootloader mode by holding power button + volume down
Step 8: Start flashing ICS through RSD lite
Step 9: Reobtain root using motofail2go (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=1940594)
Step 10: Retain root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33323701&postcount=65 (Thanks Marykzz)
while on ics, 1. root, 2. use ota to backup, 3.temp unroot, 4. restore root
1.) Update the superuser app in the play store.
2.) Update the binaries in the super user app itself..
Edit: Neroga's post about retaining root is easier to follow.
Root on ICS, UPDATE superuser and replace the apk in /system/app with the one in /data/app then reboot. Go into superuser and update the binary. Then use voodoo to back up root, temp unroot, then restore root and temp unroot, again. THEN flash the jellybean update, reinstall voodoo, and restore root. Worked on the first try for me.
If you did any modifications like google now or the 4.2 keyboard and camera, or removed any bloatware, then edit the modified xml and add back the line for wiping system when going back to stock ICS or you'll get errors when applying the jellybean update. Thanks Neroga!
Step 11: Download JellyBean 4.1 leak and save to SD card - http://www.sendspace.com/file/etujfp (Thanks Huatz84)
Step 12: Boot phone into recovery by holding power + volume up. Once you see the dead android guy, click both volume buttons at the same time.
Step 13: Apply update from SD card, select the Blur_Version.77.12.22.MB886.ATT.en.US.zip which is 4.1 leak, and apply the update.
Step 14: Restore root
If I am missing anything, please let me know in comments, and I will modify my original post. This is the best I could do to get everything in one place for those looking to make the jump. I had to factory reset a few times after installing 4.1 due to a setup error, and my screen turning off during phone calls, and lost root. A lot of people were able to keep it though.
Jellybean is working great for me, everything is much more fluid, and I really like the quick settings when you scroll left from the home screen.
Good luck, and happy flashing! Reference cheesecake thread for anything I missed or ask in comments, there is a lot of reading in cheesecake thread.
Haven't had a chance to check out the modified xml. But if it's the same one on the thread for official firmware you might wanna add the line for wiping system back in for those of use that did the nexus camera / keyboard or google now mod. Had all sorts of problems trying to do the jellybean update until I saw that the modified xml doesn't wipe system. Worked just fine afterwards.

You might be able to skip, if you go straight to upgrade and don't get an error you will be fine. If you get an error(forget what it says), then go and reflash stock.
Just to add - if you get USB errors with RSD uninstall the motorola drivers and reinstall them.

You will have to go back to ICS and try again. Check the cheesecake thread or ask there, I also had trouble keeping root as I lost the backup files from voodoo after a factory reset. I guess it goes like this, install ICS, root, backup root in voodoo, ota root survival in superuser, temp unroot, upgrade to JB, restore root in Voodoo. The problem is, if you have to do any factory resets you lose the voodoo files.

Can this be done without rooting? The reason I am asking is I attempted to root with motofail2go but I kept getting errors I was unable to gain root access. However I am still interested in the JB leak. If it is possible to do this without rooting would I be able to root in the future?

Yes you can upgrade without root, but I highly advise figuring out root first and following instructions to move it over.

Quick question for my good folks here. I just purchased my Note 3 over the weekend via AT&T Next. I love the phone so far as I'm coming over from a fully rooted, modded, OG Note 1 that finally gave up the ghost. I understand the terms of the AT&T Next to be that I can switch to a new phone yearly. The catch is I have to trade in this Note 3, clean, undamaged, and unlocked I presume. I'm very familiar with rooting and flashing on the OG Note but I'm completely lost and overwhelmed with the stark contrast of this Note.
For one, I've read about a locked bootloader that I've never had to worry about before add well as something called Knox which is also new to me. I would love to Root the phone but I do not want to defeat the purpose of upgrading through AT&T Next if it's denied because of the rooting and or custom recovery. Can someone please give me a little advice as to what I should do?
I suppose my question is, if I root is there a way around unrooting and returning to factory without tripping the counters? I understand the warranty is void by rooting but I'm not to worried about that. I would like to be able to use my upgrade after 12 months and return the phone in factory condition.
I'm sure I repeated myself here several times but although I love root access, I don't want to risk being denied when I'm finished playing with this one. Sorry for thelong post. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
I have a note 3 and I had to wait for the root and to be honest it is worth it as for the custom recovery that's not an option because of the locked bootloader and custom roms are out also so if you do root there is really no benefit except to unlock the ? spot

Depends what are you going to do with the root? I don't see too many benefits of the rooting At&T Note3 and even Xposed doesn't offer too much for TWZ and the modules has only a few working options. And btw the warranty isn't void by rooting. Wrong flashing does sometimes.

What makes you think there are no custom roms safestrap allows us to use any custom rom on the att forum you just have to use kk if you are on official 4.4.2 with jb you can use both as long as you Odin the proper kernel and bootloader

Thanks for the responses so far. I was just going to ask about safestrap as I came across that during my reading. What is the deal with that recovery on the Note? I used it on a DROID Maxx HD I had for work but that was a while ago. Keep in mind, my Note came preloaded with KK 4.4.2 out of the box. I'm on NC2 with the latest kernel 722276. Is there anything specific I need to do to obtain root like a preferable methods over the other and is safestrap the only way to go in terms of recovery? No CWM or TWRP? Lastly, if I don't do safestrap, I'll just be rooted with superuser access but no way to flash roms? Just trying to make sure I'm understanding the difference and the benefits.

Towelroot.com is your only method to root and yes safestrap is the only way to flash custom roms

You need to install busybox after rooting then install safestrap 3.75 then you can flash custom roms
I'm to help a co worker root his note 3 using towel root. Everything went well but busy box won't install says something about super user needs too give permission. So I go in to superuser and the binaries need updating so I do so and no dice get a error that knox is installed picked the option to remove but it didn't so I'm back to square one. After rooting with towel root I verified root with root checker and it says we had root but when I dl safestrap 3.75 and choose to install recovery at the top it says the phone is not rooted. I followed the steps like it said. I also went and I uninstalled everything I had previously install busybox superuser and safestrap I went and started from step one and now after I dl towel root and install I can't confirm root with root checker whereas earlier today it did verify root
I finally braved up and rooted my Note 3 via towelroot. I then installed supersu, busybox, and lastly SS 3.75. All installed perfectly without a hitch. However, I know notice an unlocked lock with the text CUSTOM below. Anybody know what that is or what it means?

Lol... fair enough @posersk8r
I've had that at times too. Idk what it means but after flashing a ROM(depending on the ROM) or restoring to stock it goes away. I think it just means a certain file was edited. Like I said, I've gotten it too and Knox still isn't tripped.
I wouldn't worry too much.
