[Q] Stable & Bug-free Kernel + Gingerbread ROM Combo - LG Optimus Black

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to learn about your experience with the OB Kernel + ROM GB Mods.
My main interests are OC for games and clean, no useless apps ROMs for extended battery life and better performance.
I am also seeking out ROMs that won't bug the Wi-Fi or any other basic functionality of the device.
I was thinking CM7 or maybe NOVA 8. But I'm a noob so i want to hear some of the more experimented users' opinions.
Thanks in advance.

If you need a stable rom, please use nova 8 (froyo)
CM is built from AOSP and has many differences with stock roms. Sure it has more bugs than Nova, another advantage from CM is themes and expanded system settings.
Try it yourself, as long you have clockworkmod recovery you're freely to test CM and Nova which one that suits you.

Thanks for the quick reply @lesp4ul.
1.) When the official GB update from LG comes out I must not update if I install NOVA 8 ?
2.) Themes and expanded settings that you say come with CM are not available on NOVA 8 ?
Off-topic: Love your signature pic. Made myself one too, whenever I'll be able to add it to my signature I will. Can't edit my signature now, for reasons i do not fully grasp.

1. Don't ask for ETA, i don't know dude. Also don't start a thread about it. When the update comes you can upgrade it.
2. Because CM7 is a custom gingerbread build by Team Cyanogen, not based from stock rom. So they can add new features that ordinary rom doesn't have. Try it, nightly #20 and Nova kernel 11c. If you don't like it just flash Nova Rom 8 again.

Cool beans. Thanks a lot Also, I think you misunderstood me there, I wasn't asking WHEN the update will be here, just IF I can upgrade to it if I have another ROM/Kernel on my OB.

Aye, AFAIK if you wanna upgrade to GB (when it's available of course),and you have flashed custom ROM, you should downgrade it to the stock/official so then you can get a notif from the LG Updater if the GB is available

Basically, If i put the NOVA 8 on my phone now, whenever the GB update will be available i'll have to restore the stock 2.2 Froyo I have on it now, right ?

Bottom line:
-I'll try both NOVA 8 & CM7 nightly #20 w/ nova kernel 11c
-see which one I like best
-that's 'bout it
All good ?

Oh sorry, btw you're good to go. Backup your contacts and data first.

Hey, another question about the replacement of ROMs. Is it wise to back-up my phone using Titanium so that more data than just the contacts and messages are saved ?
What I'm asking here is: does Titanium also back-up settings and preferences in apps ? Or the installed apps ? I have never used it before and can't really figure this one out by their description on the market...

titanium backs up EVERYTHING. ur apps (stock+installed and their progress), settings and customizations. to sum it up, titanium backup will backup every single bit of ur phone as an image. hope i helped

But i not recommended you to use titanium backup, especially you are migrating to a different rom like CM7, titanium will mess up your OS. use appmonster to backup your apps to sdcard and manually export your contacts to sdcard, also you can backup your sms with go sms.
I suggest you to use nandroid backup if you wanna revert to your original state.

Back-Up queries.........
A very good thread.....
I have installed over hundreds apps/games........ and I have flashed my ROMs over 20 times and still want to do it..he..he.. (everytime, I have to re-install every single app/game one by one.. tediously!?).
Please advise which is the best tool (Titanium back up/Nandroid.....) that after flashing rom (from Nova to CM7, from Nova to Stock......) I can restored the installed apps/games and that remain the configed of these apps/game...
"I suggest you to use nandroid backup if you wanna revert to your original state.": is this means it also revert the OS to original (ie.: if I up from NOVA 8 to CM7, after restore, it will go back to NOVA 8)?
"use appmonster to backup your apps to sdcard and manually export your contacts to sdcard, also you can backup your sms with go sms." Do I need to Restore every single apps/games after that or only 01 click to restore everything?
Great thanks.

Yeap nandroid is like creating system image, if you ever used norton ghost it's somekind like that. It backups everything from the rom.
Appmonster automatically backup every installed apps. It can do batch install also.
Sent from my LG-P970 using Tapatalk

Never used Norton Ghost. I've used Drive Image XML though which does the same thing, only better. I'm an IT tech
So basically, I'll just have to use:
- nandroid for creating a back-up to restore the phone to its original state, before flashing and upgrading;
- go sms for the SMSes;
- appmonster for back-uping the apps to the SD;
- manual (my own hands ) for exporting the contacts to the SD card.
Thanks for the tip !
Question: Couldn't the back-up of SMSes and contacts be done through the PC Suite ? Or will it mess up something because it won't recognize the phone anymore after flashing and replacing the stock ROM ?
Question #2: @lesp4paul - What do you mean by "titanium back-up will mes up your OS" ?

CM7 does't recognize PCSuite. But can be done in stock ROM, handy if you plan upgrading to stock ROM (Gingerbread) in the coming days.

I don't even see the point in upgrading to the GB coming up in a few days...
I could just flash the 2.2 NOVA 8 now, then when that ICS ROM comes to XDA I'll upgrade to that.
LE: Sorry if this is becoming annoying, but will THIS KERNEL work with THIS ROM ?
Because in the Kernel thread, it says that it mustn't be flashed on NOVA... I am very confused :-??

[ROM] Cyanogenmod Nightly Builds - Builds for P920 works on P925!

Nightly builds for the Thrill (P925) has stopped, P920 builds will work on Thrill P925.
Builds can be found here:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p920
Changelog can be found here:
http://cm-nightlies.appspot.com/?device=p920
There should be NO problems at all to upgrade from the latest SelfKang to the lastest Nightly Build.
INSTRUCTIONS:
* Create a nandroid backup in CWM.
* Install the latest Nightly.
* Reboot.
If you're currently using a stock rom or a custom rom that is not based on CM then you must make a factory reset/format data in CWM after installing the latest nightly.
Else you'll get stuck in a bootloop.
NOTICE:
* Please note that this rom will replace your old one if you have a stock rom (Froyo or Gingerbread).
Everything on your current rom will be useless, so backup everything!
If you're currently using Froyo, then you need to flash the latest Baseband;
Use the "LG Updater tool" to update to the latest Stock version so you'll get the latest Baseband, re-root your phone and download Rom Manager from the market.
Install CWM, do a Nandroid backup and install the latest nightly build of CM7.
WHY YOU SHOULDN'T USE CM:
If you're using the 3D functions of your phone as well as the HDMI then you shouldn't change to CM at the moment.
3D and HDMI is broken.
And yes, these releases are newer than the SelfKang4.
This is Not my mod and try asking in this thread before posting me a PM, you'll get a faster reply here.
I've never understood Nightly builds.
What's most of the difference you'll see?

I think 3D and HDMI aren't working. Radio, GPS, and wifi were all working before the nightly. I can confirm that wifi is working great. I haven't used GPS so not sure how well it works or not.
It is running 2.3.7 . No you don't need to do anything with the baseband.
The only complaint I have is that the person i call using this rom hears a really bad echo

Also should cell standby be taking 72% of battery? Been barely using for hr and a half and already down to 70% seems to drain faster on standby than when I'm on it.

How about make it mount internal and external SD card?
Is there a way to get headset recognition as well? I pressed mine a couple time while playing music, wouldn't pause or skip tracks like normal CM7 would. I've had atleast 2 reboots now but everything else seems great
Alright, time to start building some nightlies.........Ill be on my own in a few weeks....
Yup, but we need something other than this trashy 'CyanogenMod'.
I personally hate CM in general, it's not n00b friendly and it just looks plain dumb.
But if anyone could rocket a GB ROM without having to install a GB break, then count me in.
I hope to see a Froyo ROM soon.
Love you guys but the Thrill is trash and the mods here suck.

Eh, I agree to a certain extent. However, I wouldn't count noobs as those rooting, flashing ROMs, etc etc. So if they can't be bothered to google some CM info, welll, then...
As far as dumb, most of the time, our phones look dumb out of the box. The CM ROM is just as customizable as any other ROM. I got rid of the skateboard alien ASAP. What is kinda cool is the theme chooser so that you make a bunch of the stuff like battery stat, various widgets, dialer, etc all look different in one click.
I think most of us are just kinda waiting until the new cool phones come out in 2012 and move on.
are there any kernels for this with OC? im coming from foryo and my benchmark would hit up to 3300. now i cant even reach 3k.
uhhhh I flash this rom... and when tried to go back on stock froyo. It stays stuck on LG logo... I did a backup .... flash other roms before and was able to return to stock rooted. I think a lot of people are having the issue with the call echo. Seems to be a problem with the ambient/noise cancellation microphone. Not a big deal if you turn down the call volume.
I am having other issues with the first nightly; can't select items in the notification bar, misaligned keyboard, etc. so will be sticking with SK4 for the time being. That being said, however; it is nice that the Thrill is getting a little love. I'll still be checking the dailies and looking out for a stable build.

If you want to go back to froyo, use the LG updater tool to go back to stock, there is a few threads that describes how. After that, you can just root your device and go back to the old backup.

Had the weirdest bug ever on the 2nd nightly last night. I was at the mall playing cards when my phone suddenly made this alarm-esque noise. No matter what I did, i couldn't get it to stop. I had to restart my phone which finally put an end to it. Hopefully i don't experience that again lol.
Nightly 2 still has the echo thing going on. I'll try the new ones as they come out.
I have a question : Before on froyo, my SD had a partition that i could put various things into. After flashing CM7, this partition seems to be invisible from my phone (root explorer). For some reason, my computer at home cannot access this partition, but my computer at work can. I have filled my internal sd card from restoring apps. How can I access this partition, or repartition so the internal SD has more space?
Any help with this would be appreciated.

I completely know what you mean by SD card.
If you goto CM7 settings> Application, there should be an option named "Use internal storage". If you check that box and reboot, it just flip flops the SD cards. You can access the other, but can't the other. Kinda annoying, wish I had a 32GB MicroSD right about now
i tried going back to froyo from this and it was stuck on LG too. i had many backups. i was able to go back to froyo by flashing doomed again. idk what it is about that one but it took it back to froyo just fine. and from there you can flash ur recovery and ull b fine
I had the crazy-alarm-type bug happen again just now. I believe it was caused by a notification sound that is supposed to play, but instead, starts clipping at an alarming rate at full volume. I tried just about everything you can think of to stop this cacophonous noise, but had to ultimately shut down the phone.
As far as the "SD thing", I did find out that the other portion of the card is actually listed under "mnt" and then "emmc" for anyone that was wondering. I can access this from the phone as well.
So far the nightly builds are great, thanks for the hard work!

[Q] P1000 CM9 : Cannot restore from TB

Ive been searching on how to restore my files back by using titanium backup after i change to the new CM9 ICS ROM.
Ive check at "[DEV][WiP][ROM] CyanogenMod 9! - [02/01/12]" thread and also at "[ROM][NIGHTLY-BUILDS][CM9]Bug-thread of Te4m/Kang-builds of CM9" thread about my problem. unfortunately i cant find one.
now im on the slim build ROM "slim_build_02162012" and kernel "slim_kernel_02152012" on my P1000 Galaxy Tab.
Everything runs OKAY except the know bugs and blablabla.
the question is, how im gonna restore my files by using my Titanium Backup Pro ?
I already select the apps that i want to restore by using 'Batch' mode, then when i run the 'restore missing apps with data', it appears as usual, running the restoration mode and then when it complete , the notification came out saying that the restoration is complete. but when i open the menu, the apps is not there.
this is not only happen by using this current ROM but also when im using earlier version of ICS build by humberos .
when im using ICS Alpha 2 and 3, it is running okay. same goes when im using the overcome 3 and 4 ROM.
anyone might explain and teach me how to rectify , err no, sort out this problem ?
thanks.

I highly recommend installing ICS ROM until official ICS update

I just installed the AOKP build 35 ICS ROM and wow, everything runs so smoothly compared to the Honeycomb stock ROM. EVERYTHING. Totally worth losing all my apps and settings for 1-2 months until the official update arrives. If you use the browser a lot (and type a lot) you should really think about doing this. It's like a CPU and RAM upgrade. Like a totally new (faster) tablet.
Yes, AOKP is great, but you didn't have to lose apps and settings - you could have just used Titanium Backup, and backed up literally everything . Good thing to know if you wanna do more experimenting before official ICS.

i wouldn't do that.
ics and hc are two dirrent OS versions. porting apps from one OS to another would result in quite a few FCs.
so if you ask me "losing" your apps is the correct way to go...
I don't think that's entirely true mate. If you are talking about user apps and their data, it wouldn't make any problems, as long as the apps that were on Honeycomb are compatible with ICS, and 99% of them are. Not only apps, but he could have restored their data too, such as game progress, etc, without any issues...
Think of it this way, official upgrade from Honeycomb to ICS does a similar thing, and lets you keep user apps that you had on Honeycomb. I know this is true because i did it and kept all my user apps, when i was upgrading Asus Transformer Prime, that i had for testing purposes. There were zero issues with them.
Restoring system data and settings is another thing, i wasn't suggesting it, as that would most definitely cause problems.
It's the apps and their settings (and data) that matter most for me. And for anyone I guess... So it's good to know. Thanks.

AOKP and P5 ICS roms for p7310...can I switch back and forth between these roms using cwm without wiping?
step by step
Is there a step by step guide if how I can get this ICS up and running? From where
did you download the image for the Galaxy Tab 8.9?
I don't think so.
Here's the short version:
1) install CWM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312218
2) wipe data, cache partition and dalvik cache (advanced menu)

Brilliant, thank you so much, I will try it the next couple of days. Just wondering if there is a way to store the current original Honeycomb image, so that I can restore it in case there is some warranty issue?
Many thanks!
Yes, make a backup after you install CWM. You will have to restore this and also the stock recovery software if you're going for the warranty.
I've been trying to install ICS on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE and have been unsuccessful even when changing the update-script to avoid assert errors. I'm at the point where I get a Status 0 error when trying to install aokp_p5_build-35.zip.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm a noob with Android but experienced in iPhone area. I'm using CWM 5.5.0.4 recovery.
Sorry, no. I also had a similar error (6 I think) but that was because of me editting the script in Wordpad and saving it with carriage returns. I have no idea what the errors mean or where you can find any info related to this..

The LTE 8.9er Tablet has different hardware to the 8.9er regular tablet (p7310/p7300), the custom roms from the 8.9er tablet didn't work on the LTE tablet.
The lte tablet has a quallcomm soc the regular 8.9er has a nvidia tegra 2. Look here for a ICS for your lte tablet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1575
I installed CM9 yesterday on my tab. Ihave CM9 ob my SGS+, too. Thats the reason, why i installed CM9 and not AOKP or another ROM.
What i like:
- The performance is faaar better and smoother than on Honeycomb Stockrom
- In the Image Gallery a can disable the bottom bar so the full screen is used
- Better Taskswitcher
- IMHO better Contacts-App
What i dislike
- I have to say, Samsung optimized the Apps very well for the tablets that means:
- Better music player than Apollo
- Better calendar than in Android 4
- No Polaris Office
- No Keyboardsupport for the Samsung keyboard
Ok now lets see what Samsung deiver with there own Android 4. So i can copy some apps to CM9 .
Im waiting every day to have the confirmation that ICS would be ready
and I know I would start to wait until one of our chef's cook a proper ROM
I tried the different ICS and they look the part, is fast, and there is some nice improvments everywhere, however more than the camera not working,
what is holding me in Honeycomb is touch wizz
lol
don't get me wrong, I truly hate skins, and I like very slim and lightweight roms
but the app eBook is the killer app in my tab.
Until there is a good way to port it to ICS I will hold still living in the past..
(honeycomb was launched in feb 2011 why feels that long?)
Honeycomb isn't a problem by itself. The slow hardware on the 8.9 and Touchwiz make it a problem
Short Question: I have rooted my tabled and installed CWM Recovery and a port of an Cyanogenmod 9 ROM.
What happens when the ICS ROM will be released official by Samsung. What steps will I need to get these official ROM. Can I unroot and reset my device to the normal ROM or install the new official rom by manual download and installing over CWM Recovery?
When you made a backup of the stock rom after you installed cwm and bevor you installed the CM9 rom, you only have to restore the backup an update your tablet. otherwise you have to install the stock rom via odin.
About the "Smoothness" of Honeycomb and ICS. ICS is very smooth, but not every app. Quickpic stutter, the AOSP gallery is very smooth. Google Chrome is stuttering and shows me white screen when im scrolling to fast, the ICS Browser is smooth and faster.
So i thin there is something more than tegra or honeycom the problem.
maybe it is something like the right h264 codec for video.

As with the sense versions, 3.5 as you said is gingerbread. I don't use it because it is nearly 2 years old.
Sense is HTC's custom skin on android. It adds functionality and looks good, but takes up a lot of ram and CPU. The point of an AOSP rom is to get rid of this skin, to free up ram and processing power. Some like sense, some don't, its totally opinionated. I like sense mysself
Sense 3.6 and 3.5 are very similar, the main difference is that 3.5 is GB and 3.6 is ICS and adds some features. Sense 4 is the latest and is very different to other versions of sense.
If you create a backup in recovery before flashing a new rom, you can restore to that backup and everything would be untouched.
Hopefully I helped

just want some basic info, i have flashed and played around with alot of phones etc just dont know much about android
whats changing the kernel, radio, sense, etc do? and should i do it? where can i find out more about that?
whats better - what is sense?
sense 3.5:
sense 3.6
sense 4
AOSP/Non-Sense
if i was to test a a rom and didnt like it could i recover my phone back to how its running now with all its apps etc? as if i didnt touch it?

You can't have 2 recoveries installed. You either have 4ext OR cwm. Flashing a new recovery overwrites the old. Your radio is old, update it. This might fix your mms issue and probably late SMS and calls not connecting.
And yes, a complete backup to, and a restore from recovery will take the phone to "as if I didn't touch it".
ok thanks guys filled in alot of blanks
time to start updating i think
hopefully no bricking!
just a note to everyone reading mybackup root is a good app backing up program it copies the apk and data
can also do images video etc not sure on sms but i need a cleanout anyway

prob not a good idea to restore the data as you went from gingerbread to ics.
only restored certain apps and the data with it
mybackup pro seemed to fix it an all is working good
i could understand not restoring phone settings etc but i figured apps should be fine. guess ill find out soon
i have a problem with MMS not being able to get them even with wifi now!! might have to flash to another rom yet.

It all depends on which apps you are trying to restore data, i.e. for some apps restoring won't bring all their setting and data back (e.g. dropbox and some social networks apps).
You could also try using Titanium Backup (it's not free, but it's worth every penny), coz it can extract and restore data directly from your 4ext\cwm ROM backup.
PS: If you are fan of Sense-less or\and AOSP\AOKP Roms, I suggest you flashing CodenameAndroid ROM, because it's more stable, smoother and has less bugs than IceColdSandwhich (too bad that kaijura stopped it's development -_-)
running optus, got it working with wifi again now but now with mms apn...
yeah once i sort out the backup side of things i may start testing different versions, not against sense but wouldnt it run slower?
your talking about the jellybean version? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854796
one thing is there anyway i can change the wifi and 3g signal into numbers? rather than bars

I'm optus too. I did try Ice Cold some time ago, a good Rom but I couldn't get mms working so I went back to cm7. There was a thread in general some time ago discussing how to get mms working, don't know if there was a fix or not.

AFAIK for some operators (including Optus) in most of ICS\JB ROMs you have to set APN setting manually to make it work. I heard that using 3rd party apps like "Go SMS" with fixed APN to send mms fixes this issue as well.

Though Sense is generally slower than ICS\JB, Sense ROMs have better camera and somewhat less bugs. BUT ICS and JB ROMs have much better customization options.

As of now there is no such an option in CodeName Android, but this feature was requested several times and dev (I mean dev of the original CodeName) said that he is going to add it in one of the future releases.

[Q] Looking for a howto

I own a Samsung Ace GT-S5830, it is currently running Cyanogenmod 7. CyanogenMod-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-cooper I did this a few months ago and I would like to flash it back to Android. As this was done a while back I have lost all of my bookmarks. Could someone please point me to some instructions to do this.

Wrong section mate! There is a great Q&A Thread!
...
1. You should read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768181
2. Backup your current rom using CWM (do it via recovery)
3. Use Titanium Backup to save your bookmarks, or the data files from which ever app (even you can save de apk)... if you use Titanium Backup then when you restore the data you might face troubles in different roms (4.2.2 / 4.3).
4. To backup all your contacts use contacts app to export all of them to your sd
Now you are ready to flash a fresh stock or another custom rom

Do you feel the wi-fi slow compared with others cyanogenmod roms or the stock rom?
I used the nightlys of january, february and march (all) and my phone have slow wi-fi
CM7 ROMs are not totally bug-free. There have been GPS issues with several ROMs in the past. Also I till the date have never been able to use the phone on CM7 as a modem for computer as the modem (phone) doesn't respond. Also minute but Wi-Fi issues that prevailed previously seem to be sorted out eventually but expect no optimization.
If you want speed & stability with all the working features, use the stock based ROMs.
