so much confusion about custom kernel !!!
custom kernel is independent or dependent on bootloader ??? for to have custom rom we need custom kernel also ???
1. Custom kernel is a different base for your rom. Custom kernel requires unlocked bootloader. Custom kernel and unlocked bootloader provide some performance and capabilities benefit.
2. It depends on the type of the rom if you need or not to flash custom kernel. Many roms DO NOT REQUIRE flashing kernels, while some DO. You can find if rom requires custom kernel in the thread that the rom is posted...

Getting back to 2.3 from ICS

Hey, I wanna to get back to 2.3 from MiniCM9 (nAa) and I don't know If I should first change kernel to standard, or first ROM to 2.3. Can somebody tell me?

First change rom to 2.3 then flash the appropriate kernel.
I don't think it really makes a difference, just that one is slightly less risky than the other.

Kernel then rom, if it's rom 1st then you MIGHT have to reflash the rom anyway

No need for reflash of rom in any circumstances... point is entering flash mode to flash correct kernel is much more doable and likelier to succeed than entering a kernel embedded recovery to flash a rom.
Hence rom first, then kernel.

Hmm... Who to trust?
I'm curently on nAa ICS kernel and his MiniCM9, and want to get back to Achotjan Semc Debrand Engine 2.3 with nAa 11 kernel
From my experience there is no difference at all because the kernel you wanna flash has a recovery and gives you the option to flash your rom. For example when I wanted to revert back to stock without using seus I flashed the rom first and then the kernel because if I did otherwise my device would be softbricked. I hope I made my self clear. The choice is up to you. But I like flashing the kernel first;-)

Ok, so I tried now with kernel first -> that doesn't work, now I'm going to check with rom first
you cant build a house without foundation! flashing the kernel first is only proper way to do this!
1.put 2.3 Rom in SD
2.flash a kernel
3.on 1st boot(at kernel logo)push back button rapidly to enter cwm
4.make a full wipe and install 2.3 rom
5.done

i dont think nAa will develop stock version
minicm 9,10 on stock kernel is impossible.
Its impossible to run CM9+ with stock ROM. it requires swap(I guess) and some tweaks + libs that requires with custom kernel.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

[Q] Change kernel on a stock ROM

Hi,
Someone knows if is possible to change the kernel in a stock rom? I'm looking for one that allow "mounts", "install's/updates" via CWM and support for init.d
BR
if i'm not wrong, i've only seen cm based ones in this section..If you want you can build one on your own and mod it as you like..There are lots of tutorial available to do it..if you don't want or you don't have time to do that, i suggest you to flash a stock based custom rom..Have a nice day!

[Q] Best Kernel / Rom combination for the I9070

Hello,
So after getting some knowledge of the things (thanks Shut_Down :good, I was wondering which is the best combination for this phone?
Right now I am running the stock ROM and kernel.
Will the new official JB upgrade also change kernel or just ROM?
Since people here have already tried different combinations, which combinations have you found that give good, consistent and fast running?
Thanks!

Funny thing is that each of you have a different combination.
Any one actually did testing which combo is better? Or maybe i sould ask, why are you using he combinations you wrote?

Same here. Stock JB LQ4 + ThunderZap 3.5.
So I am guessing I will upgrade to the stock JB ROM (till there will be a JetMod version of JB).
1) Which would be a better kernel set CoCore or ThunderZap?
2) I am right now still running the stock GB ROM.
What would be the right upgrade process kernel update then rom, or rom and then kernel?
The reason I am thinking kernel first is because I still don't have a custom recovery (using the stock brand) so i can't backup or load new roms.
What do you think?
Thanks!

Try both and see what firs you better. And about order, you can install ROM with temp. CWM, but I suggest you use permanent, with custom kernel. So first kernel, than ROM.

Thanks mate! Again you helped.
If I install the stock ROM will I be able to get it in my local language (Hebrew), or do I need to download a specific ROM that is already in my language?

Hm, on this Russian JB there is no Hebrew as I see. So if you want it you should wait for release for your country or any with your language.

OK, Thanks.
Last question, when just changing kernel, do I need to do any wipes / resets (I have read about dalvik cache, factory wipes etc.) ? Or is that just for when installing new ROM's?
