Hello everyone! My SGS2 is dying Sad I know! But it might be time for a nice little update Well, I was thinking about getting the Note! It's the perfect screen size, but to be honest, I'm a little worried about the text.
My vision isn't as good as it used to be! I don't like having to focus too much on it to read it. I love the SGS2 because the text size and icons are already large. Icons isn't my major concern, but rather readability of text.
I also have my retired streak here, and text is a lot smaller and harder to read than my my SGS2. I know a lot of apps have text size options, like in xda app and tapatalk and such, but what about just NORMAL menus and web browsing and such?
Does anyone have an SGS2 and a Note and be able to tell me if text sizes are a lot smaller throughout the interface? and within apps?
The SGS2 has the option to change fonts, and some fonts are naturally larger than others which could help, does the Note still keep this feature?
Any screenshots would be awesome, but not necessary.
Thanks guys
I moved from SGSII to Note and i have not noticed that the font is smaller on the Note. My eyesight isn't the best so if the font was too small it would definately have annoyed me.

It does have this feature.
If you root you could change the density too.

Hi! Is that accessibility menu OEM or did you root to get it? Because that looks fantastic hehe.
Menu is OEM. But like it states, its only for some internal apps.
That's indeed the accessibility menu No root needed.
wow you guys made my day. I can't wait to order mine.

It looks very nice and fluid on the xoom. I like the new lay out it has for Honeycomb. The new store front UI is very nice as well. I like the scrollable Recommended For You across the top, and layout in general. I do like how in the settings it now shows which device name it is labeled as so you can change it on the amazon website to correctly reflect which device is which. I think my only gripe is that you can't change the background to a sepia effect so its more comfortable to read on.
My xoom updated automatically. I went to my apps on my Nexus s and it wasn't showing it as available for update, I had to search for it manually to perform the update. So for anyone not seeing the update on possible other devices do try the manual search in the market.

Nice, millions times better than before but it would be nice if they added page turning animation and soother scrolling.
Any screenshot ?
yeah, i played around with it for a while. its a little buggy still, but a definite improvement. at least there is negative space around text. it would be nice to have better animations, two column support, and better overall horizontal screen responsiveness. the store in particular is borderline useless in horizontal orientation. about 30% of the way there
APK please?

I do tend to agree with both of you, while one of my main loves for Honeycomb is its drive to be very functional in landscape it does leave much to be desired in any apps as far as portrait goes.
Animations would be nice as would the two pages per screen, I guess owning a kindle myself it seems like they try to keep the app geared more like the device itself. I'm still surprised there aren't color options to increase ease of readability and provide longer battery options, two things the device itself captures but while Amazon designs the app to be more device like not just software like, fails to capture here.
I'm guessing the lack of these features leads to desire to want a kindle. Wouldn't want all the creature comforts and selling points in an app that could potentially steal your devices thunder.

And the option to use the volume buttons to change pages
No color controls. If I'm missing something please show me. I'd love to change this. I know some of the other readers in the market have this option.

Can you sideload books into the Kindle app? I tried copying a mobi file to the kindle directory but it doesn't work..

Ok finally got it working. I had to force stop the kindle app first and restarted it before it could see the new books.
Are you sure the kindle app automatically detects the books once you copy them over to the kindle folder?
nice app but I like more to read ebooks on my Kindle. better for my eyes

No I am not sure of that. I may have not had the Kindle app running or I may have hit "sync and check for new items." I have a few books I need to add to my xoom so I will try again today and pay attention.
On a different note is anyone else having problems with text select? It used to be the kindle app had a magnification of the text so I could tell what was being selected. They did away with that but kept the crappy handles. If they shift to the honeycomb text select I am fine without the magnification but using the small (kindle specific) handles I can not tell where I am which makes it difficult to grab a precise section of text.
Edit: I should mention I am at the smallest font size. I read mostly technical books and the more text I can get on the screen at once the easier it is to follow. Particularly sample code. On large font sizes text selection is not as much of a problem.
Does anyone know if text to speech will come to the Android Kindle??
What Ver do you have? im on 3.2.0.35
Hey guys. Here is a question. Is there someway to change the resolution to 480x800? My old eyes are really having a hard time seeing the fonts on the Vivid. I am 41 and don't want to have to wear reading glasses to see my phone.

you could adjust the LCD Density.
there are apps that handle it in the android market if you don't want to get into editing system files....
you DO need root.
Default is 240, setting it higher will INCREASE the size of the fonts, ui elements, etc.
The only real drawback is that some apps look a little funky if you adjust it.... for instance I adjusted down... to 200 and the phone dialer looks a little weird....
it still functions, but ui elements don't quite line up.
Could use some specific instructions re: increasing font size
How do you get to the LCD adjustment on the HTC Vivid phone. I'm also over 41 and have a hard time seeing my calendar (which is coordinated to my work calendar)...very nice feature!!
Please help.

Hi all,
I'm coming from and SGSII and I'm in the process of trying to setup my One how I like it. There's a few things troubling me though.
-The blacks of the screen don't seem especially black and it seems there's no way to adjust the contrast. The whole screen seems a bit flat/grey
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
-The icons on my SII are a lot better
-I'd like the notification bar to be black
-On the SII I have gps switched off but weather apps still work, with the HTC gps has to be on.
-I'm going to have to root this phone to get adfree aren't?
I'm using nova launcher so a lot of things are similar but those things above are really bugging me. I've googled all of them and had no luck so let me know if I'm missing anything.
Thanks.
I didn't read your whole post but to get white text on black you are going to have to go with an inverted Rom, like d3rp or 42One I am sure there are others but those two come to mind.

Thanks, I might hold off on rooting for a while.
The main thing I wanted to check was that I wasn't missing an obvious settings and that the screen was working properly, it's VERY flat and grey compared to my SII.
Overall it's doing a good job but the screen is going to have to take some getting used to.

This is the difference between AMOLED and LCD. The contrast on the One is pretty much the best available on a phone LCD, but it is still an LCD, and cannot match the black levels of AMOLED.
-The menus are black text on white, I much prefer the white on black of the SII
The menus on the SII are white on black because white is a very expensive color to display, battery-wise, on an AMOLED screen. Inverted roms, or themes, will fix this for you.
-The scroll 'brakes' too quickly as your finger comes off the screen, it's like sliding something on sandpaper as opposed to ice. There's no 'mega scroll' flick
Depends on the app you're using. If you're speaking about within Sense (settings, app drawer, etc) then yeah I guess, but I'm not sure why you would need the long scrolling in such short lists.
-I've had to download a task manager killer but I cannot end google+, gmail and googlemaps. I don't want them.
Uninstall/disable them via settings>apps or kill them with an app.

Thanks for taking the time, much appreciated. Much as I feared the about the screen. It's a shame, I do really like OLED. Those are the two big things now, the screen and lack of centre button. It's stupid because most apps now have a black bar at the bottom which takes up about 10% of the screen for the 'options' button. A button would be much better. If it had those two things it would be the perfect phone in my eyes.
Makes sense about the menus, I checked out the 42One rom and it looks pretty good. I spent yesterday getting everything set up so I'm going to wait to root and flash.
The scroll/flick behaviour is a bit different but some lists do have a 'mega-scroll' so that was me I guess, I'd still prefer it if it was a bit looser.
I found the only option was to disable certain apps, I guess I won't be able to get into removing stuff until I root the phone.
Maybe I should have said i don't like the stock icons, I still prefer the SII one but have since downloaded some icon packs so we're all good there.
On my journeys I saw someone had written a little program to guide you through rooting your phone so I'll have to find that again. I'd also like to backup my stock setup in case of warranty issues further down the line.
Thanks again.

You can use the HTC Logo as menu button. But you'd need a custom kernel that supports that.
AMOLED displays are usually very over saturated compared to IPS LCD displays. But IPS will give you a more accurate color and truer whites and blacks.

The HTC logo doesn't have a capacitive sensor, the "logo button" feature actually uses the first row of pixels immediately above the logo as a button.
Not trying to attack anyone here, just want to make sure that the information is explained a bit more.

Yep, it's the tradeoff you made when you picked LCD.
If its any consolation, displaying white on your S2 actually caused the display consumption to go up drastically (sometimes double the power required) while on LCD the screen uses a much more consistent amount of power. The whites on your One -should- appear as truer whites, while yes, the black will be more washed out.

Useful to know, thanks!
Thanks for the input, being brand new to HTC I'm still learning what's available.
Ideally I like Nova so I'd like to keep that. I'd like the general menus to be white text on black BG, I can clean things out with Titanium and stop ads with adfree.
From what I can tell I'm going to need to root the phone and then install a rom.
Are there 'pre-optimized' roms? Are there any Roms which are basically stock except for the colour flip? Can I get 4.3 in there as well? That middle button would be great too. My SII came with swype, I miss that.
I've found instructions on rooting but a little unsure which rom to go for, konfuzion's suggestion of 42One looks ok but I don't know what's out there, supported and up to date.
If you have any more thoughts they're always welcome
I'm gonna need some help on this guys.
I'm in the UK on the EE network, can I download any rom or do I need a specific 'EE' one?
Do I need a rom if I just want superuser privileges and a reversed/inverted menu? (also be able to install titanium backup and adfree)
I think I can handle the rest of it.
Thanks.
Well you most likely have a gsm one so you wouldn't want to flash anything in the sprint one section. And seeing as your gsm i believe there are a few roms over there that are 4.3
From My TweakedOut ONE
Alright, so my aunt and parents all bought the Note 5. It seemed like the thing to do because I had just bought a Note 3 and loved it. Overall, they are pretty happy with it, but the comparison to my phone and theirs on the status bar is RIDONCULOUS. I can see it, but I'm still young enough to have 20/20 vision (probably not for long...).
Seriously, what is that, like a 2pt font? (I realize that it's probably a 10pt with a pixel density that is too high to make that reasonable.)
I poked in the settings, looking for something to change the size of the icons/statusbar, but found no love. There is a way to enlarge the interface, but it does nothing to the status bar. It would seem that not many are complaining about it, based on my search.
Regardless, is there any way to make the status bar/icons larger? Are there apps out there that wouldn't require rooting their phones?
Because people prefer it small. I so hope it is as small as iPhone, it still big compare with iPhone status bar.

Aw, come on now - the whole reason it's there is to know at a quick glance down, up to 3 feet away, what is going on. Sure, you have the notifications on the lock screen, but what if you want to know if your phone is muted during a meeting quickly? Grab the microscope and go all CSI on it?
If people don't like the status bar, just make it an option to remove it completely?

I am telling you the reason why no people complain.
The status bar in Android is big enough to clearly see, Samsung smaller it is doing a correct choice, in previous Note4 and earlier is too big already.
Did you see anyone complain on iPhone 6 Plus or 6s Plus? or any Mi phone that follow iPhone status bar size. It is small and still clearly to see.
The only way to make it bigger is root the phone just can change.
I don't have great eyesight, and think the status bar is easy to read...
I don't know if any of the themes make it bigger, but that might be worth looking into.

No themes will make it bigger. The only solution is root and change the lcd density same as Note 4 (640).
Samsung make smaller density this time at Note5 (560) thus everything look much smaller than before.
Andrewtst, either you're pretty rude or have a poor grasp of the English language. For many people, the icon size of the status bar is too small. We're asking how to make it larger. Constantly repeating "root" doesn't help fix the problem. In settings, under display, you can change the font size of every icon, except for those in the status bar. If you would like to help, please provide step-by-step instructions on how to enlarge the status bar icons. Thank you.
There's a free app called Display Scaling on the Play Store. In there, there will be condensed and standard. it will originally be in standard but change it to condensed then back to standard. and no, this does not require root. hope it helps!
The reverse
Alright, now that this is taken care of. Does anyone know anyway (without rooting) to reduce the size of the icons for the Note 4?
Back with in S8+ days there were 3 apks floating around that allowed you to change the height of the navigation bar in order to increase screen real estate. I quite liked it as did a lot of other people I assume because you can find links to plenty of websites talking about it. However I can't find any talk about it for this phone.
Does anyone know of anything like this for the Note 8?
Still on the s8+ but considering getting a note 8 soon. Just out of curiosity, have you tried installing the same apk?
You can change the Minimum DPI setting in DEV settings to make it look higher res. I have mine set to 475 and it has a lot more space. You can then change the font size to be one mark below normal and it really helps.

Yep I had changed that. on both the S8+ and Note 8. That's good, but the nav bar still bugs me on this phone. Everytime I look at it, I notice it's too big lol
Hmm. I wonder if the guy who created the old apk uses an S8 and hasn't bothered to make one for the note 8. I'd imagine it is quite simple. Wonder if you could make the request?
Edit: I made a request to tigerhoods, who I believe authored the apk for the s8.
Here is the response I got:
it works when packed in a sammy theme if that makes sense..
u have to decompile a Samsung theme then add the nav values to the common.apk then recompile theme for it to take effect now

Looking further into how to do this, but I haven't yet been able to get my hands on the apk for the theme I've been using. But, from what I gather, you can't just install an apk to change the Navbar height with the note 8. You have to specifically edit the apk for whatever theme you're using.

If you mean something like that..... here are some overlay mods they are working without root. The 1 i have linked is to minimize the height a bit more then half.
