My ear hurts, solutions? - Off-topic

Hi everyone,
So I just got done with a long gaming session (TF2 and League of Legends), and once again, my right ear is killing me. I wear a headset with the left cup on my ear and the right cup behind my right ear(so I can hear other people in real life, not in game). I don't know why, but for some reason this makes my right ear hurt a lot. Specifically if I push it, it hurts a lot. The pain goes away after about 2 or 3 days. Does anyone have any idea why this happens and how I can prevent it (without changing how I wear the headphones)?

Without stating the obvious. Try different headphones, you might not get on with the standard ones.

how long is.. long? xD
Max. (From my Galaxy 2)

i used to do the same thing... just get another pair of headphones

Refrain from boxing Mike Tyson.

A) Long is over 6 hours.
B) All I could think of was fixing my current headphones, not changing them (I laughed at myself when I read your answers). Anyone have any suggestions?

I assume that you are refusing to see doctors because you have a deathly allergy towards them, otherwise whatever advice I will be offer will be pointless:
0. See a doctor because nobody here is qualified to tell you real stuff. All I'm telling you is based on conjecture and experience without even seeing your ear.
00. If the pain is INSIDE your ear or you LOSE BALANCE seek professional medical help IMMEDIATELY.
1. COLD COMPRESS. Apply ice to the affected area and put some pressure. If this reduces the pain, that means there is an inflammation in your ear, probably from infection. Take lots of vitamins and water to kick the infection, as well as antibiotics. Which can only be obtained with a prescription from a DOCTOR.
2. WARM COMPRESS. Use a warm towel to apply pressure on the affected area. If it improves, that means that there is a bruising/tissue damage to the area. Try to shield the area in your sleep and/or other activities and it should heal over time. See a DOCTOR just in case.
3. 1 & 2 doesn't work. Pain persists. Probably your headphones suck. Invest in a set that feels better. See a DOCTOR just in case, because you may have caused permanent damage.

Thank you for the suggestions.
It's funny that you say that I have an allergy toward doctors, because I actually first brought this up with my allergist (I have bad allergies towards things other than doctors). He immediately said it was likely an infection and gave me pills to treat it. I didn't take the pills because the pain went away about a day later.
If the paint does not go away (I'm sure it will) then I will go see a real doctor. In the mean time, I'm going to buy a new pair of headphones.

Stop wearing your headphones like that? Get a one ear military style mic? Idk

From experience, I had the same identical pain you are talking about. I got rid of it by wearing the headphones on both ears and not just one. Not sure if this will work for you but might as well give it a shot.

HTC Sense Earphone Electric-shock ??

I've got a problem with my HTC earphones (or myself) and I'm just wondering if anybody else had the same issue or if anybody can guide me on what to do.
Basically, after listening to the earphones I would get what I believe is a mild electric shock in my ear every now and then and obviously I don't keep it in my ear after that as it could potentially be fatal (?) and it isn't a nice feeling ! I rang up my contract peoples and they sent me a new set of the handsfree earphones which I received earlier today but after about 5minutes of listening to them I experienced the same 'shock' feeling !! I also tried the first earphones in my iPod whilst at the gym and I got the 'shock' then too and the iPod wasn't even turned on. Hopefully this has happened to somebody else (not hopefully in a bad way) as reading this back makes me sound a little crazy lol !
Thanks for any advice too,
- Ash
Haha
You're most likely wearing some jumper or other clothes that cause a static electricity buildup when the phone cord rubs it. I remember having that with a particular jumper some time ago
Solution, try changing clothes and no, nothing dangerous about it, just annoying.
yeah sounds like static to me

As already said it's probably static electricity from your jumper/coat/shirt jumping from the metal parts of the earphone to your ear. (unless you got one of those ear/nose trimmer things that has left you with spiky little hairs in your ears )
Technically there is almost totally zero chance of there being a high voltage fault in your HD2 and you already proved that it isn't the phone as you get the same shock from the 'phones in your iPod.
Carry on using the phone and headphones but stop buying nylon jumpers and shirts at Primark, get some nice cotton ones instead
HTH
i get a electric shock if i use the headphones in my laptop dunno why
Nothing to do with mobiles, but I get static electricity shocks from my metal cased 'in-ear' phones on the treadmills in the gym.
The treadmill "belt" being a good insulator; Similar in principal to a Van de Graff generator.

is your phone connected to ur pc/laptop via usb? i sometimes get a shock when i touch my phone whilst its connected.
You know I have been having the same thing with my iPod just lately, using a pair of Sennheiser CX 300 II headphones. And it's only ever in my right ear, very strange.
Hello Everyone,
That's not a shock.This is a shock
Shock therapy?
I have this problem with my HD2 too!
When i use my phone on battery the shock is very small, just a little bit annoying, sometimes i don't even notest it. But when i connect my phone to a computer using the USB connector, the shock is really intense sometimes. Just 5 minutes ago i got a shock that even made me a little bit dizzy. Changing earplugs doesn't solve the situation.
I'm not using my earphones anymore when my computer is connected to the phone, witch is not acceptable! Too bad the phone is such a good phone, so going back to the shop is not a option. I hope HTC will have a fix for this, but i think that it will stay with me hoping for a solution.

The phone has nothing to do in that, only dry air and static electricity, you'd have the same with another phone or mp3 player
When you connect the device to USB, you connect it directly to ground through the PC, and just give an even better path for the static electricity you're holding to escape
These days where it's so cold outside here and thus the air inside is so dry, every time I walk through my flat I get loaded and will get a serious shock whenever I come too close to something that's grounded. The other day I managed to make my desktop PC crash and reset on its own by going to fetch my headphones and plugging them in without thinking to discharge myself by touching the case first...

My assumption is, that guy was on a suicide mission. The minute he touched those high voltage lines, he was crispy inside and out. Not the mention he dehydrated so quickly from the voltage,he caught on fire like a piece of petrified wood.

Wonder if warranty will cover repairs/replacement?

And now I read a thread about plastic replacement screens for HD 2

Electric shock? Phew... I never tried the earphone pieces and from the looks of it I don't want to either... So if I read this right the shock can disable touch function from the screen? Perhaps it is better if you all try out a bluetooth headset instead?

It doesn't matter now that the screen is damaged.
HD 2 is made of metal, don't think it matters if I have a wire or not.
But I'll give it a try when I get it back from the repairs.

[Q] How to fix microphone being too soft during normal calls?

I just bought a N1 recently, and am loving it. However, this one issue bugs me to no end.
During calls with my girlfriend, she always complains of my voice being too soft, as if I'm talking from far away. The only solution I've found so far is to cup my hands in front of the mic, or to just speak louder. This is annoying, as I never had this problem with my ancient Sony Ericsson K750i.
I've been looking for an app/way to increase my microphone gain, to no avail.
So..
1. Does anyone else have this problem?
2. Is there a way to increase microphone gain on the nexus one?
Some help would be much appreciated here. Thank you you. =)
I bet this may be a hardware problem, maybe one of your two Mics is not working. I don't have any issues, and I've even left myself messages to hear the phone's sound quality, and its very clear.
The only time I experienced what you describe is when I use the wired head set and the wire is not plugged in all the way which makes the Mic fail. Then it sounds exactly like you said, which makes me very much think its a broken Mic hardware.
Thanks for the reply roger.
Thing is, it's not that i'm VERY soft, just a little too soft for good hearing. If i make it a point to put the mic as close to my mouth as i can it's alright.
The wishful side of me is adamant that it's a normal problem, and just a little extra mic gain would solve it prettily. Now all I need to do is find that app.
RMA-ing the thing isn't the nicest of solutions, because i live in Malaysia, and HTC Malaysia doesn't support the phone. I'll have to get it sent to HTC Singapore, and do the necessary there. No joy.
If you guys have a lead on what to look for I'll be most thankful. =)
There is no thing you're looking for, and it's not a "normal problem", this problem shouldn't exist. The problem is most likely in dual-mic noise-canceling setup, as RogerPodacter wrote above. The only thing you could try is cancel the noise cancellation:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700958
Yeah I don't know then. Like I said, I've plugged in my wired headset so it was not all the way inserted, which disables one or both of the Mics or something. And people say I sound like I'm in a tin can or like really far away and faint. When I push the plug all the way in it returns to normal.
So the first thing I thought of was a problem with the Mic. However only you can tell if you think its your low voice. Maybe you can try leaving yourself a few voice messages at various distances from your mouth then listen to them yourself and judge the quality to see what's going on.
Yea, good ideas roger, jack. I'll follow your suggestions, hopefully they'll solve my problem.
Meanwhile, thanks much for your help. =) you've been awesome.
It may be a microphone issue - my first N1 had problems with the microphone where the other party on the line would only hear digital noise or it would be inaudible what I was saying.
BUT I am now on my 4th replacement and something that everybody, who I talk to on that phone, agrees with is the bad sound quality / microphone quality on the phone. They all say that I am really far away as or it sounds like I am speaking into a tin can. This is across all 4 replacements.
If I use a different phone, they will say "ugh what happened, I can suddenly hear you as if you are standing next to me"
Funny, just about any Nexus review on the net, and just about any of my colleagues using it, are saying the opposite - the call clarity and sound on the other side is excellent, especially in noisy areas, where noise cancellation kicks in. I guess they're all blinded by some kind of group mind control...
Interesting, you actually bring up old threads just to bash N1, whether on real points or with bullcrap. I don't know a real person that would tolerate a bad phone, no matter how much it cost - and definitely don't know any person that would keep constantly complaining about it.

Troll? Did you contribute anything to this thread?
When you're on the phone, make sure that you're not covering up the hole for the mic near the camera.
I've noticed that when I have to use my shoulder to temporarily hold the phone up against my ear, the mic will rub up against my shirt, totally screwing up the noise cancellation. I've been told that when I hold the phone that way that it sounds like I'm talking through a towel.
Maybe you hold your phone weird?

That explains why I can't seem to cradle the phone on my right shoulder. If what you said is true, then cradling the phone on my left shoulder should work fine. I'll try it out. Thanks Erikakaz!
On the microphone issue, I think it's because the way I held the phone when it happened might have placed the mic too far from my mouth. Perhaps the ANC thought my voice is background. I'm now holding the phone tilted during calls, so that the mic's closer to my mouth. (The mic is off center right?)
Seems to work so far.

Note was Snatched from hands(!) in Chicago yesterday. Any cases w/chains?!

Yep, checking texts and yep, BAM...Snatched and sprint.
Police report or Tracing did nothing.
Anyone know of cases that also have chains?
Thanks
The official Samsung protective case has a slot for a lanyard, but I doubt it'd be strong enough to withstand it being snatched from your hands (or you might be left with a case and no phone)
I think some of the aluminium bumper cases have lanyard slots and they'd be a much safer bet for something like this. If I'm mistaken about the lanyard slot you could also insert one between the headphone port and the 2nd microphone, but that might cause issues with noise cancellation.
I think a lanyard with the official sammy case will stop a snatched and grab.

If you have a strong enough lanyard, just find a case that works with it. Make sure it is a tough case and it will be strong enough to stay and not break or at least make the snatcher think it isn't worth it to take one.

Bit of a sidetrack, but regarding the 'carry a gun' thing, no. Showing a gun on your hip doesn't scare away the really motivated criminals.
It makes you target #1.
And a good video to go along with the info:

That's terrible about your phone getting stolen. Over the weekend I saw this on the news (see link below) about thieves stealing phones and selling them at the mall. I never heard or seen these kiosks before.
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/nightly-news/52009921
I wonder if something like a Sling Grip or Fly Grip would reduce the chances of someone taking the phone out of your hands. It's not full proof, but it could hinder the thief.

This video doesn't even talk about the visible presence of a gun being a crime deterrent. Unless you mean concealed carry instead of showing a gun on your hip.
However I do agree with the majority of the points presented.
Going to geek out for a second, but if the perceived reward for the criminal is greater than the perception of the sanction against the act (i.e. getting shot or caught), then the criminal will try to 'get er done' anyway.
In other words, if the person open carrying looks like a target, they will still be a target, but now with a higher priority and more likely to receive a violent opening to the event.
The average Joe doesn't practice with their firearms anywhere near to the level of a soldier or law enforcer. Their retention self defense is minimal along with the very popular Serpa holsters or Uncle Mike's holsters that allow anyone to yank really hard and pull out the weapon.
All that being said, I'm a big fan of concealed carry.
Concealed carry is the dumbest argument for this kind of situation. What would you do? The person snatched it from your hands. A concealed (can't be seen) wouldn't deter the person. You weren't vigilant enough to stop that from happening so you're going to pull your gun and put other innocent people at risk?
And a gun on the hip and can be seen is a bigger danger as far as I'm concerned. One sucker punch and an opportunistic criminal is taking that gun off of you. Another gun on the streets in the wrong hands.
I'm not against guns and all that...I just think some clueless people that watch too much TV think they can go buy a gun and go to the range once a year and all of a sudden are experts on self defense.
I don't know about you, but I don't want to have to kill someone over a cell phone. There's no telling if that person that took off with the phone is carrying either and I don't know about where you live, but here it's usually a group of teens and they could care less about really running half the time. You just have to know to be vigilant when things seem fishy. And if you ride public transportation watch at all stops.

I think the visible chain would be a deterrent....they do size up their victims, and seeing that...would likely have them look elsewhere.
If it didn't, don't think much of an injury would occur.
I'm not joining the carrying the argument. All sides have valid points. Although, I did find the two videos interesting.
As for your case situation, it's hard to say what would work best. Not much if you're just using a cheapy TPU case. If you had something like a Defender, you could cut slots, feed some material, like what is used for dog leashes. On the end, inside the phone, I would super glue it to flat piece of strong plastic or metal. The other end, super glue it to form a loop. The material would maintain comfort. Personally, I think it would get old fast.
As a general rule, to really prevent it, one needs to pay attention to what's going on around them. Obviously, you must have used the phone a bit earlier and the thief saw and followed you, noticed you weren't paying attention. We know the rest
Also, sorry to hear about your phone.
OP: Are you not setup with the Samsung tracking facility? I'm surprised nobody has asked yet?

Gear Voice Quality

How is the voice quality on your Gear?
I carry my phone (Note 3) in my front watch pocket, on my stand next to me, or in my mobile mount. This keeps the phone within 3 feet of the watch. Sometimes I can hear perfectly, but sometimes the audio breaks up so bad I need to quickly grab my phone and press the Headset button to disable the Gear's audio so I can use the phone.
It's random, almost 50/50. Is this a common or uncommon issue?

With respect, I think your expectations are very unrealistic and that's an understatement. Professional TV broadcasting outside microphones can cost tens of thousands of euros. Sound recorders are professional people who specialise in just sound yet even then there is no guarantee that the weather will behave. See the news on TV with an outside broadcast in poor weather and what do you hear?
Of course you will look silly when holding your watch up to your face to speak in to it, further more if the volume was higher are you sure you desire to share your conversation with the general public while walking down the high street?
I am hard to please yet even I realise the limitations of the device. What exactly where you expecting?
The volume on my gear is superb as is the quality of the speaker and microphone.
I have concerns about the gear but this is certainly not one of them.
Regards.

When I first got my Note (1) all the reviewers made comments about how stupid someone would look taking on such a big device. I never got that... phones were big before they were small, it's just an issue of what people become accustomed to. It immediately became very normal to me, and when I see people with much smaller phones they seem like toys. Holding your wrist up to your ear isn't that much different than holding a phone up to your ear. The only difference is, if someone pays attention they will see there is no phone in your hand. As wearable devices become more common, people will get used to it. I think putting the speaker on the clasp was a good idea, it does allow you to hold it up next to your ear in noisy environments in a much more natural way than if you were trying to hold the face of the watch up to your ear. I personally couldn't care less how silly someone thinks it might look, that's really more their issue of not being able to quickly adapt as technology changes.
My audio issues are not weather or distance related. It just seems like the audio I hear from the Gear is often choppy or has lag or stutter.

motoX and my balls

Hello,
i am thinking of buying this phone since nexus6 will probably be 5.9" but i have concerns about 4 infrared lights constantly working on front of the phone, does it pose any danger to my genitals? When my phone is in my pocket they will get scaned quite alot.
thanks.
Depends how big your balls are. If they are bigger than 5.2 inches then, sure I would be worried. But I would be worried anyway if my balls were that large.
You will more than likely become sterile.....
Put in pocket screen facing outward. Problem solved

i doubt the infrared would pass through cotton on your clothing to begin with? unless you plan on shoving the phone into your boxers etc
had a good grin on my face from imaginating it regardless
Oh the silly things people imagine. LOL I'm an employee of best buy and we hear everything lol
IR is just another color we can't see. It can penetrate clothing if it's strong enough but certainly incapable of causing DNA damage.
This is the most hilarious XDA thread I've read for a while.

As long as your balls don't talk to the NFC chip you should be fine.

The IR sensors would not be active while the phone is in your pocket.
The real problem is the ionizing radiation from the cell radio, so it's best to wear aluminum underpants to protect your gentlemen.
I've been wearing foil underwear for quite some time now. I used to be infertile because of the phones. I now have four children. Gonna be tough explaining to the kids why there's only one side of the family. Some secrets are better kept secret
Radiation is everywhere. It may be too late.
If one testicle is bigger than the other, you may be sterile.
If one testicle hangs lower than the other, you may be in trouble.
Look for symmetry for virility.
If you butt it in your pocket, you run the risk of ButtCheek carcinoma! A real pain in the

as long you don't take selfie **** pics... you're fine lol
Just wanted to stop by and say this thread almost made me spit out my cereal on my work pc screen.
