SD card issues - Nook Color General

Howdy,
I have a Nook Color running 7.1.0 from the emmc. Everything seems to be humming along nicely.
However, if I have to reboot for any reason, it will not recognize my sd card until I remove the card and reinsert it. Then it will mount itself and work as usual, sometimes it takes several tries to succeed. The main sd card in question is a 16gb Sandisk class 4, but the same behavior happens regardless of which sd card I try.
This is a small nuisance, but it is going to become a larger problem when I start using my Otterbox case.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I responded to your post in the other forum but basically you may have a failing card slot.

Everything's crashing ...Why?

I have been running CM7 off of my SD card for several weeks now, and it has been working very smoothly -- virtually no problems.
Today I installed the updated Barnes & Noble Nook app. It worked fine the first couple of times, but now every time I try to launch it I get the message:
"The application has stopped unexpectedly, please try again."
Then I am given the option to force close or report. The problem is that this is now happening with the majority of my apps. They are refusing to open. When I try to use any of my browsers, they open and shut in the blink of an eye.
The only two apps that appear to be working OK are Market and YouTube.
I tried rebooting, but that didn't fix anything.
Also, my Nook is showing a very low wifi signal, while at the same time my iPod Touch shows a strong signal.
Anybody have any ideas on how I can clear this all up? Is there any troubleshooting app I can run? Thanks.
Update: Market doesn't work now either. I can open it up, but it crashes when I try to download anything.
Dunno if it would cause this... but did you recently modify your build.prop file to install Netflix? If so, restore the original file, reboot, and see if it helps.
It could be oxidation on the microSD card connectors...
I have been messing around with Android on SD for some time, and I don't know what kind of microSD you are using but some of mine require periodic cleaning of the card edge connectors.
Just yesterday, one card I had started with the FCs and crashes and after cleaning the edge connectors it is working fine again.
I dunno, but that is what works for me...

Thanks for your suggestion. I took the card out and cleaned the contacts, but everything is still acting flaky. I tried to uninstall the nook app, which is the last thing I installed before everything started going haywire, but it force closes and won't let me uninstall it.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to wipe my sd card clean and reinstall CM7 all over again if somebody can't come up with a solution.
I have the market Nook app installed here on the 2.6.32 Beta 3.1, no problems..

Yeah, I really don't think it's the nook app that's causing all these problems, but what is? CM7 was working beautifully with no problems until today. Now, everything is force closing on me.
Probably somewhere down the line, corrupted SD card. Not all CM7/SD card installs play well, especially if you're using a Class 6/10 card as they have piss poor random small block writes. Read this thread:

Wow, that's pretty amazing. Thanks. I am using a Class 6 card, thinking that it would be better. Who knew?
Do you have Bluetooth turned on? My FCs stopped when I turned it off.
I was having a problem with a lot of force closes as well and it ended up being the SD card. Started off with a Transcend Class 6. Force closes all the time. Then tried a Sandisk Class 4. Runs smooth. The difference was night and day.

That's exactly what I'm using -- a Transcend Class 6. I will have to buy a Sandisk Class 4. Thanks for the tip!

I'll have to give that a try. Thanks.
How could this be?
I have two Transcend 8GB Class 6 SD cards. On one of them I have froyo, on the other is CM7.
Yesterday, the CM7 card started going wacky, locking up or force closing practically every application I tried. I rebooted, but that didn't help.
Well, I turned my Nook off, took out the CM7 card and popped in the froyo card. I then powered up. Now the froyo card is acting the same way as the CM7 card did.
How could this be? Is this just a coincidence, or is something internally in the Nook causing this? I mean, before yesterday, both cards were working fine, and then one day they both go bad? Hmmmmm?

I at one point actually got something inside my microSD card slot, but I didn't know it until it got on my microSD card and came out...
Maybe the connectors inside your Nook need cleaning...
I am gonna scrape up some change and buy a 4GB CL4 card from the 'shack' and see how CM7 likes it...
On a side note, does anyone have a life expectancy for microSD cards that have Android run off of them?
Not to knock the SD, but not goto eMMC, then you wouldn't have to worry about bad SD card connections. There are plenty ways to go back to stock. I could see using SD for a beta test, of course that's just my opinion.

Isn't it hard as hell to get things put on the eMMC now?

Well, I got my nook back in March, didn't have any problems then. And haven't played with a newer one, mine was simple.

Dual Boot success and Joy!

Just finished installing all the steps to the dual boot phiremod 6.2 and Madcat's honeycomb ( found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018 ) and WOW! It absolutely ROCKS. I had it on a class 8 microSD card initially, and it was slower than frozen molasess. Moved it to a class 4, and the heavens opened. Ran just as fast as on the eemc, and is much better than the 1.1 autonooter.
So I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who worked on this release. It is excellent, and worked on the very first try. Got all my programs reinstalled from the market and runs like a champ.
Thanks guys! Was a bit disappointed when my wife said she wanted a Amazon reader and wanted to give me her nook, but I have not looked back and have had a blast with it.
So I didn't ask the question I should have asked - How do I back up what is on my SD card so I don't have to go back and download every app again in the event something goes wrong?
Use Titanium Backup for your Apps
Just curious, does this run completely and totally off the SD card? I have a spare SD card and would like to try it, but I have a very nice build of CM7 on the internal memory that I don't want to mess up.

Completely off the SD card. You select at boot which you want to run. It doesn't touch the eemc on the Nook, so I could pop out the SD and be right back with my autorooted 1.1. Reboot and shazam! But for what I have seen so far, this is so much better.
I have also read that SD card choice makes a big difference in speed and performance off the SD vs emc. I believe this, as I had it installed on a class 10 16GB SD, and could not use it for as slow as it was. I got this card - a class 4 (I think, the text is so small) 16GB card, and it runs as fast as if it was installed on the eemc.

[Q] SD Card makes 5830i **** laggy.

Hello everyone,
Today, I just received the dreaded "blank SD or unsupported file system" all of a sudden from the stock Samsung 2GB Micro SD Card. Everything gone, Card Fried.
But then I tried to put in a separate memory card into the phone. It's a Kingston 2GB. But the moment I even put it in, the whole phone freezes into oblivion. Only when I take it out and wait 5 seconds, will the phone run at normal speeds again.
Another issue is that I am unable to format the aforementioned Kingston Card from the phone. When I try to do so, the phone just says Erasing... then it stops. When I try to press the Mount SD card option, phone just freezes, until, of course, I remove the card and wait 5 seconds.
All this suddenly happened today. I have been owning this 5830i for about 2 months now, no problems, and suddenly today...
Any insight into these issue are greatly appreciated. Thank you.
To help give a more visual approach to this problem, I have decided to take some time off to create a video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMoaGPYH6UE
Hope this clarifies things.
OMG what is this shenanigans? I just put the KINGSTON card into the phone and waited two hours, and the phone had the cheek to work normally again. Yay its solved, but I still find this issue to be very strange. Fickle phone, I guess.
I just found a solution to the Kingston Card Lag Problem.
Go google Panasonic SD Formatter and Format the SD Card using a card reader. Then put the card back in the phone and the Card will work normally again.
umm umm. lol?

That's a great price... providing it's a genuine capacity. Even on Amazon there are some rogue traders selling fake cards. Make sure you use a capacity checking tool.

I have the same. Only annoyance is whenever I switch the camera on it asks me if I want to use the SD card when I selected that in the settings.

This happens with my 32Gb card too. Do you think it's down to the card or is this a 'feature' of the camera? Annoying all the same.

It's less consistent now, maybe every 4th or 5th time I switch the camera on.
SGC can read the card in ExtFAT file system or does we have to format it to FAT32?

it only asks on a cold boot.
if fast boot is enabled it doesn't shut down completely until 24 hours after you last used the camera, or until you charge it.
fast-booting skips the boot logo and animation, and it keeps the memory card mounted while the device is off.
in a cold boot the memory card needs to be mounted, and this usually happens shortly after the starting application(usually the launcher, but it's the camera app on the sgc) is launched.
because the camera is launched before the memory card is available it defaults to internal storage, and then asks if you want to switch once it detects the insertion(mounting) of the memory card.

I understood that this was the reason for the SD Card prompt but I believe the better solution would be an option in settings to always accept the external SD card as the default storage once mounted.
It doesn't seem to be an issue in any smartphone I ever owned which essentially goes through the same mount process on a cold boot.
how often do you start the camera app before android even got the chance to mount the memory card though?
no other android device launches the camera app this quickly after(or rather, during) startup.
It's Boxing Day Sale on Amazon and I just ordered the Sandisk 64GB Micro SD card for CAD$48.00 with free shipping!
Cheers

Same happens to me too. Gets worst when you have a Security password associated to the device. By the time you enter the 4digit code the option to select the card goes and the camera reset back to using the internal memory. annoying to say the least.
hi, has anyone who is using a 64gb class 10 card notice any speed different of the device?

SD Card keeps dying

My micro SD card 32 GB has gone bad for third time. First time it went bad phone started showing lag then one day refused to complete boot if card was inserted in it. For 2nd and 3rd time card just became read only for some reason. Files won't delete/rename, if I try to format it in windows can't do it, partition wizard would say process completed but files are still there. Phone is rooted and card is partitioned, I use Link2SD. I use stock rom if it matters.
Aug 2014 I bought LG L90 D410 and a 32 GB card (Sandisk Class 10 UHS1)
July 2015 Card became bad for first time.
Aug 2015 Phone rooted, SD Card partitioned, Link2SD installed
Sep 2015 Card became bad for 2nd time. I got it replaced too and again partitioned it for Link2SD.
Nov 2015 Card became bad for 3rd time.
Q1 Is something wrong with phone's sd card slot that keeps on damaging cards?
Q2 Or is this happening because of apps running from sd card? It's a class 10 card but may be it's still too much for card to handle?
Q3 Any possible solution to just fix the card instead of asking for replacement? It's in warranty but I don't know how long will Sandisk just keep on replacing it.

I've had exact same problem with same phone, same sd card. I know the phone does not hold card securely, and the card don't seem very durable. It was like the heat from the battery and phone had warped it. While trying to gently bend the curve out of it, it snapped in two...

Mine seems fine physically and fits correctly too but yes phone does heat up at the exact spot where sd card is.
