I installed the best keyboard in my view - A.I.Type Plus keyboard. It actually mimics the WP7 UI kb almost exactly and is the closest I found in precision and ease. It is quite accurate and those of you who used WP7 and the keyboard that came with it know what I am talking about. It even clicks the same.
Available from the Market and I think there is a free version available, as well as paid one. I have dual Mango and Android and always felt WP7 had a much better keyboard, even with all sorts of options available for Android - tried them all, loving the A.I.Type.

htc keyboard is also good !!
try it ! !!
My personal fave is Thumb Keyboard as it allows you to have the cursor arrows at bottom like on the HTC keyboard. It also has a good prediction engine/auto-complete and skinable.
Will check your recommendation out aswell though, thanks hun
I use Slide-It,which works accurate and fast!
Costs a couple of euros, but really worth it!
Flext9 is the best one for me.
See you
Franky
Swiftkey X is my choice.
With the rapid typing setting and its prediction software, often I don't even have to hit the first letter of the next word. Especially in repetitive messages like typical text messages or email replies. The more you type, the more it can learn from you.
Had heard great reviews of it in the past, and one day a month or two ago it was the free app of the day over at Amazon. Even before it was free that day, I was on the verge of purchasing it.
Also for our worldly friends, it supports a ton of languages.
I tried SWYPE, SwiftkeyX, HTC, Slide-It, Better Keyboard, WP7 no droid etc - had a few over the past few months. I just really enjoy the one that comes with WP7, so was looking for the closest match and A.I.type is the best adaptation in my view, it has copy/paste and all sorts of other cool options. SWYPE would be my second best, probably because I got so used to it.
i've always prefered the sense keypads over every other eon but since moving to amioui based rom and go launcher, i have given go keybaord a a go and i like it alot
As for me GoKeybords is best for now.
SmartKeyboard rocks!!!! gestures, one click language change, a lot of skins
I tried SwiftkeyX and I'm not sure why I didn't like it. Somehow typing felt more difficult and I had to concentrate much more then with the HTC-Keyboard. So I went back to HTC...
I used to use smart keyboard pro (3 months), but then I tested the new Swype beta. Haven't changed my keyboard since, it works great

I was talking to someone recently and they had mentioned a KB that would actually predict phrases and sentences that you would say, similar to the old school Nokia phones where certain button combinations would type out full sentences in no time. Does this sound like anything someone may be familiar with?

Realistically, your options are...
1. For an Eris, you want an HVGA version. Since Swype is commercial, although still beta, files/threads/posts come and go depending on content. We might as well not make the lives of the staff here more complicated by posting material that they are ultimately obligated to remove. Use google.
2. SlideIt mentioned above. Seems to get decent reviews. Like Swype, it has quirks that you will become familiar with as the system is used. If you're not in the Swype beta, and you can't locate a functioning tweaked apk floating out there, this is likely your best option at the moment.
3. The Swype beta is closed, but it appears that you can register there to get in line if it reopens. Frustrating solution I know.
None of those options are great, but some are better than others depending on your own knowledge base.
B
New versions of Swype available on my blog at
Have BOTH HVGA and WVGA versions on there. Just look for the swype article
Just throwing this out there. I did not waste my time checking out ultra keyboard. It has a swipe feature as well as multi-touch. I swipe in portrait and multi-touch in landscape. Exactly what I was looking for. Lots of customizing options. You can make it look pretty much however you want. Lite and paid versions in the market. Well worth the money, IMHO.
Slideit is great but I'm having one problem and I don't know if anybody else is having the same issue and thats the voice to text. I can use it for the first time texting somebody but if I try using it again for the same person it won't work. It'll record but it won't text it out for you not unless I go to my contact list and pick the same contact again then it'll work.

Decided to take a peek at Ultrakeyboard. Agreed. Well worth the cost (under $3).
If you have a hankering for trace typing, are locked out of the Swype beta or simply don't want to play the expiration dance game that they insist upon, want something supported and available in the market, this is a very nice option. Very configurable (can be a plus or minus depending on user). Dictionary management seems better on a quick look. Highly recommended by me as well.
B
Ultra Keyboard has become the only keyboard I use. I have it set for trace in portrait and regular multi touch in landscape. You can even use any other Keyboard's theme or create your own.
Im also searching for the ultimate tracing style keyboard as i hate the traditional typing method.
To date i have tried Swype (very average and overated however the new version 3.5.83.26516 is much more accurate). Also there are nice skins out there too.
SlideIT: Great keyboard and i believe is faster than Swype. Can also learn custom words and phrases that you commonly type. ie/ swpe 2 letters that you teach it to replicate an entire sentence. More language support as well.
Shapewriter: no longer supported but if you find the APK floating around, it is by far the most accurate in my opinion and ive used all the ones ive mentioned for months. It looks dull but man is it accurate and fast. smile icon right on the main screen as well which i like. Easy to learn words etc, very no frills but extremely accurate.
FlexT9 Input: They have brought out shapewriter with this release. Also great keyboard in that its very accurate, moreso than Swype etc but Shapewriter has great edit word capability. ie/ just type fast and then select anywhere in the word to get the word suggestions which FlexT9 doesnt have to date.
Ultra keyboard: as others have mentioned, very customisable, not bad. I question the dictionary though and this reduces its accuracy which Shapewriter has otherwise great potential, there is nothing you cant customise.
TSwipe Pro: Only drawback is its dictionary, many words dont exist so its just not as fast as Shapewriter but excellent features, just like Ultrakeyboard. You can customise anything, looks great, great features and one of my favourites but at the end of the day it needs to be accurate and fast as well.
Can anyone else think of anyother sliding/tracing/swping style keyboards, im always on the lookout for one that just excels in every area which im yet to find (yes being picky). Wish one of the keyboards had a combination of them all
I add another vote for Ultra Keyboard. I think Swype was a bit more accurate in guessing and had a better dictionary, but I was sick of dealing with Swype not sticking.
REALLLY dumb question.... but what is swiping in terms of kbd swipes?? I get the swipe up/down and left right on screens and in apps but when typing?? Confused and want to understand.... laughing welcome .

...but what the hell gives? Does swype actually have plans for the public at large to use this? It has always worked perfectly well for me, ive never had a single issue with it so i dont get the "beta" tag.
I dont remember where i downloaded it, ive certainly never registered at swype, beta has been closed every time ive looked anyway. But ive had swype in my file manager for what feels like forever, i just installed it and when i opened it to use it it said the "trial has expired". . And whats the deal with letting a few people download it every once in a while?
Personally I dont even think its better than the stock keyboard which is pretty bad itself, maybe thats just because i use landscape alot and swype isnt so great in landscape, or perhaps i just got used to typing on the stock kb. But this super-exclusive "beta" jazz has gone on long enough hasnt it? I mean how much better can it really get?
Actually,I think swype still has a fair way to go.
But I agree, it is good enough for release, and even tho I'm a beta tester. I'm over the beta as well, should be on market
You should try ultra keyboard, its available in Market, and with tracing enabled its just like swype.

Personally I don't like Swype because the "tracing" action is difficult to do unless you're sitting still holding the phone in one hand and "typing" with the other. Which excludes a whole bunch of activities with my phone.. Walking between meetings, sitting in the car at a stop light (phone in car mount), etc..
But I have yet to find the 'perfect' keyboard.. HTC IME is about the closest for me and I use it most of the time, but for some things I really like SwiftKey, Touchpal I use sometimes but it gets laggy... Maybe I should create a post and combine keyboard pro/cons, although it'd be very personal...
I wouldn't expect Swype to ever be in the market. They've stated publicly they are interested in working with OEMs to license and deliver Swype, not the end user.
The OEM bit makes some sense since it is already coming pre-installed on some phones like the Samsung "Vibrant" (Galaxy S) phone from T-mobile and others.
They have said that swype will be an OEM value added product. Like the beta when they get a final out the apk will be readily available for download so I'm not concerned. If they wont take my money I will feel no guilt over not paying for it.

Hi everyone,
We would like to provide an update regarding the unauthorized distribution of our Swype software for the Android platform. We realize that many sites are now distributing this software and several are providing installation instructions.
We are glad that you like Swype, but we did not release or leak it for distribution and do not currently support any downloadable versions.
There are now two devices that ship with the Swype keyboard pre-installed: the Verizon Samsung Omnia II on Windows Mobile and, more recently, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. We’re very excited about these releases, and there will be a number of new device launches in the near future. Because our partners are highly sensitive about their product releases, we really cannot say anything further. But a lot of work goes into making sure that Swype integrates perfectly with each device we release and by comparison, any leaked or hacked version of our software will work improperly or not at all.
One might ask why we don't just release it ourselves and save everyone the hassle? The reason is that we have spent seven years building Swype and our business model at present is OEM licensing. We do plan to get to direct-to-consumer distribution, but it is a different sort of business with unique challenges and thus it is hard to say when.
Stay tuned (and provide feedback) on our forum at swype.com

The Swype Team

Personally I think Swype is an annoying PoS to use, and this is after months of use (I'm in the official beta). The pop-up screen that occurs every time you tap a letter is so annoying it's downright idiotic. Not having a microphone key is also extremely frustrating, as is not having any access whatsoever to the custom dictionary it uses. Great idea but some of their implementation is absolutely horrible.
I've used all three of the above keyboards with tracing capabilities and in my opinion, they are all are better and much more pleasing to use than Swype.
I've switched to Ultra Keyboard and purchased it yesterday. Hope that helps.
Yeah I don't use swype because its no good in landscape, its really not that great in portrait but I haven't found a good keyboard and I've tried them all. I just wish I had the option. I know its blasphemy but I still think the iPhones method of invisibly resizing the keys is far and away the best but it must he trademarked since it hasn't been mimicked. I know about thick keys or whatever its called but its awful, just terrible. I'd have no interest in swype if we could get one like the iPhone. Of course, if I had a 4" screen I might be plenty happy with stock. Android said they know their keyboard blows, but if the iPhone method is truly trademarked android is going to have to get pretty creative. But if its not trademarked I wish they'd just copy it already. There's no shame in using what works, its more shameful to not, upon principle, use what works. While we're copying the iPhone lets make the maps zoom in and out using a single image instead of pinching to where I want it,then it jumping further in and then loading a whole new image at yet another level, if you've zoomed on an iPhone you understand how defective android maps is (that's not to say the content sucks, google maps is the best application there is, obviously). Sorry about that last part, when I rant to my wife she just turns the TV up really loud.
It does seem a bit rich to get it Beta tested publically but then only have it as a OEM release.
Google bought out blindtype, if they implement that as the stock keyboard. The iPhone comparison will be long forgotten, it will be strides above

I guess I didnt "dislike" them I just didnt find them to be significantly better than stock or htcime. Actually Ultra Keyboard was a bit overwhelming for me. I do like SlideIt, I have SlideIt, htc and stock installed currently, but like i said, in my opinion neither is unequivocally better than the other so i usually just end up on stock. I think this screen is just big enough for stock to be comfortable, not awesome, but adequate. I definitely find myself sending texts in immediate succession to correct/clarify the original, but im used to it so thats not really a complaint. But i have gotten pretty used to typing on stock, and voice text is phenomenal so i use that alot. I love that Google is constantly obtaining new startups, I forgot about the blindkey acquisition thats pretty exciting. Just knowing that Android is aware of the deficiency and has plans to address it gives me reason to be patient, and pumped!
Its getting real close to gingerbread time, I cant wait to see what android will look and feel like on my N1.

Hi,
I'm not sure whether this should be open here.
I've been swyping ever since i got my sgs.
But as I upgraded into 2.2 (jph jpm) the swype's personal dictionary is pretty messed up.
I mean the contact names are all inside my dictionary and I had deleted the words everytime it prompts me to.
However it seems like the contact names are loaded into the dictionary everytime swype is activated.
Is it possible to get a fix on this? or any solution other than changing my input method?
Thank you very muc
q&a. ;p
anyway ye. swype has A LOT of bull**** words. they piss me off. Swype tends to add extra letters on my contacts.
example:
contact - jed
swype - jjjeeeddd
and words like arty, berti, tmr, 2mr. can't they just have ENGLISH words on it and users can then add anything they want manually?
dead pissed with swype, yet loving it.
I love swype, it's kind cool.
If only they could provide a better dictionary.
I think the older version of swype is better.
I wonder the other sgs user using what as input method

I personally never use Swype coz that would require me to hold the phone in one hand and "swype" with the other. For some reason it makes me feel I'm typing very slow ( even though I may not be). I use Smart Keyboard Pro and it's perfect! Very good dictionary/correction. Among freely available ones, my favorite is the Droid X multi-touch keyboard. It has a very accurate correction system too. Thanks for the advice, I might look into the two you mentioned. I'll miss swype for now, it was cool to show off to friends, but in case of efficiency i guessed it's not so good at all
THANKS
Swype is efficient and will be the future once they improved dictonairies and android spreads further like a disease!
it only takes a few minutes to get used to and its pretty logical to "type" that way. I still use the samsung keyboard and I'm loving the improvements they did to it in froyo cause the dictionary is sometimes annoying and it doesnt support my language yet. I would use it alot if I was doing english mainly though
I too have a problem with swype in the newest firmware. Can any of you help me confirm it? It seems I cannot add certain words to the Norwegian dictionary (but works in other dictionaries). This is with the JP6 firmware. Please read what I wrote here:
http://forum.swype.com/showthread.p...-be-added-after-recent-SGS-i9000-froyo-update
Also - is it possible to change the swype version to an older one, specifically the one from XWJM9?
What keyboards are you guys using on your Droid Eris? I've tried so many but none can keep up with my typing speed. I can type so fast on an iPhone but when I type on my Eris, I always have to slow down because my phone is still trying to catch up or got stuck on one error or something.
I tried Swype but I'm just not as accurate as the regular keyboards.
Since I've basically lost interest in Swype because of their lack of releases for any new users, I decided to try SwiftKey.
I noticed they were running a sale (yep, guess Android dev's do that sometimes) so I decided I would try it. The text prediction is so good most of the time you only have to type one or two letters of a word. Not sure how it keeps up with speed, since I rarely type any full words. There's a free version you can try and see if you like it, just search "SwiftKey Keyboard Free" in the market and you'll find it.
I don't think I've tried SwiftKey, but I use Ultra Keyboard (Swype-like). Before that, I had tried Swype through several beta versions, but I thought it sucked, honestly. I preferred ShapeWriter to Swype; it worked better. ShapeWriter isn't available on the market any more, but I may have a backup of the last available version in an apk if anyone needs it (it was free anyway).
SwiftKey's text prediction is what got me hooked. In terms of "learning" it's one of the best keyboards, after about a week or two of moderate use you'll barley have to type anything anymore.
+1 for SwiftKey. I hate that it's bland whute and gray, but it's definitely the smartest keyboard. I too have tried them all, but keep coming back. My routine is this: flash rom, use themed, native kb for few hours because it looks cool, then break down and swap SwiftKey into system/app. The ability to have it instantly "learn" my language from my saved text messages is a nice touch aa well. It tracks saved keystrokes and I'm always @ 25-30%.

I've been a big fan of smart keyboard pro lately. it's quite fast and accurate and it has a "dynamic key resizing feature" which helps improve it's accuracy. I think it's safe to say that it is my favorite keyboard and i've pretty much tried them all. swiftkey... swype... better keyboard... ultra keyboard... ect.
edit: Ohh and I forgot to add that it's auto correct is pretty kick ass too.

Yes, Tablet is the keyboard I use and I like it alot. It has either split screen or regular full modes. I like the split mode which is very natural for holding the xoom and typing with thumbs at the same time.

I use SwiftKey and love it, split thumb based keyboard with an amazing auto-complete feature that almost writes emails for you, and improves as it learns your writing style.
Try Thumb Keyboard. I've optimized this keyboard for tablets by a introducing a split design. Right now I'm working on a very big update that will unleash the extra functionality of Honeycomb. For one thing it will have multi-touch, but also the ability to click and change previous typed words with suggestions and it will present different suggestions for voice input. And in the future I will also add the ability to predict the next word.

Great! I will release a stable version begin next week. Normally I would upload it directly to the market, but because it is a rewrite of the whole core I decided to do some testing.
It's a private beta. Please PM me, or better yet, send an email to the email address in the about box so I can mail you a version begin next week.
If others respond, I'm basically looking for users who already use the keyboard because I want to do the test for current users who can also do a comparison. (Don't want to fix anything that isn't broken )
Thanks
I'd love to test it. I use it on my xoom and evo. best keyboard ever

another slide keyboard is TSwipe-Pro
Hi,
I tried many keyboards and am still looking for that perfect combination of layouts, features, and speed. I needed something with numbers on the top row and use Tablet Keyboard Free. I would really like to have cursor keys and the ability to use my finger and slide the word.
Ive been trying TSwipe-Pro. Of all the two dozen keyboards Ive used, this one has more features than any of them. I do not know if its because I have the trial version but sometimes it slows down, or parts of it stop working, like prediction, until I kill the task. It is a THI keyboard with english. I wonder if those letters would show here, , ๆๅภุุึคตจขชไำพะัรนยบลลฟหกดเ้่าสวงผปแอิืืทมใใฝฝ????
Thumb Keyboard is not to be overlooked. It has its strenghts that other keyboard apps don't.

If you really want a swype type keyboard you should look up slide-it keyboard. It is basically swype but as an app that can be bought and installed. i think its like 6 dollars. Its what I use and in many ways its better than swype, at least it allows a few more features.

Sweet! Thanks!
A few quick first impressions:
I love the move of the tab and .com buttons to new positions, much easier for me to get at.
Really struggling with the addition of the caps key on the right side of the keyboard in the location of the delete key on the old version. Not that this is bad, just that coming from using the older version of thumb keyboard I find myself getting a capital letter when I had been intending to delete the previous letter.
The space autocomplete with highlighted word only works from the right side space bar (and that is the only one that lights up with the notification for autocomplete). Is this by design and if so why? Have tried hitting the left side space bar a couple times expecting the autocomplete and then having to go back (see above for what usually happens next lol).
That's just a few things after a couple minutes time. This is the only keyboard I use so as I use it more will try and give more feedback.
This is looking great, thanks for all of the work you have put into this. Can't wait for the final version of this update and all of the greatness it will bring to my favorite keyboard on my xoom.

I love it too - bought it for my N1 and been using it ever since (like 4-5 months) ... but tried it on the XOOM and it's terrible... obviously not made for tablets since the keyboard takes up 90% of the screen
did they release a beta for tablets I'm not aware of?
