So.... I just killed my phone. - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Tried unlocking the bootloader last night using the guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254225)...
went back to stock rom (just to be safe) did everything all right up to step 5c.
started flashtool, plugged in my device however flashtool could not recognize it. it kept asking me what phone i had, after i ticked th e15 ( i have e15i) it could not let me do anything undere plugins. after closing flashtool and restarting the procces a couple of times i guess i disconnected the cable without closing flashtool and then it happened.
all of that just because i wanted wifi tethering. Ironicly, I found out about Barnacle about an hour after it happened. right now my phone is at the shop, waiting for news.
So.... to sum up. If anyone wants to know how not to unlock his bootloader, THIS IS HOW

woahh.. that's pain..

OMG I DIED AT THE SAME PART U DID ..high 5 ...so yea..i oso sent mine to the repairman...lets hope for good news for both of us =) , mine just wont respond to anything and ended up being a brick

I broke my phone ( radio off ) using this same guide too, have to re-lock in order to get back to work. Read other guides and finally managed to unlock the ootloader! Basically this guide is rather confusing and somehow the flow of processes are not well written! After having gone through the whole experience, it's actually a very simple process!
You have my sympathy!

does anyone know why it happened? Why weren't our phones recognized leading to the brick?
what do we have to do differently?

I have to agree with u those steps are confusing for first time unlocker and you have to re-read multiple times to summary and simplify it (i use that tutorial though).
Relocking bootloader is kinda confusing too..

Return to the official original edition
I think you have to download a Flashtool up to date. Then fash to the official original edition

Actually, re-locking is pretty simple, connect your phone to S1tool-1, and press " RESTORE" button, viola, done. Only the guide tries to get very technical complicated and confuse everyone!

I too find the guide rather confusing... Which other guides did you read? I couldn't find any. Thanks!
and @dovdevan05: Dont expect too much of barnacle. Lot's of people have problems with it. Like in my case I can connect to my phone but my computer wont get an IP and hence no internet. + barnacle only offers Ad-Hoc-Wifi which means that you cannot connect other devices like a tablet ot phones to it because they usualy dont support Ad-Hoc. Like in my case my XOOM wont even see the barnacle Ad-Hoc network and I would have to unlock and root it to install AdHoc support. Well. I'd rather brick my X8 than my XOOM...

Bricked while flashing bootloader (twice)

Hello,
Few days ago I bought my girlfriend an X8.
Since I have too an X8 with all the root and such things done I though it might be a good idea to do that on girlfriend phone.
BUT, second day after buying that phone, and trying to get exact modifications I did on my X8 , her phone got hard bricked and I couldn't boot it up, not even to recovery mode since computer usb didn't recognize it anymore...
I think i was in phase while trying to get root access..
So, I went to the shop to get my replacement phone wich they did gave me...
Soon after I got home, I was trying again to make same modifications, and it was sucesfull... I installed custom rom, with root access and that was it...
BUT here comes the problem - while trying to use Titanium Backup , i was constatly getting the message that my phone isn't rooted so I downloaded root checker from market and yes, it said that i'm not rooted... Funny thing, busybox and superuser worked just fine...Then i though it might be a problem cause I didn't update superuser on latest version, so I did it, and now the superuser told me i'm not rooted...
To make long story short, i came up to flash stock rom, and then back to custom rom to make clean install again, this time I wanted to unlock bootloader too to put a custom kernel for that rom, but after the process, phone quickly restarted 2 times and from then it doesn't want to boot up, just like the first phone, doesn't react on power button not even to usb...
I'm so frustrated because on my X8 everything went fine, and i did on her exactly what I did on mine, but I bricked her 2 new phones and I don't know what to do next
Is there any way to back it up to life again??? (i think they won't replace my phone again at the shop)

what custom room you using to unlock bootloader?
You can't even use the Repair section of the PC Companion?
what ROM do you use when you try to unlock bootloader?
I was using stock rom (Elcair) when i tried to unlock bootloader...
and none of the usb methods works cause it doesn't get recognized by PC...
Uff...to any hard brick, your phone should get flash mode with fleshtool or seus/pcc..maybe its some mistake..to root phone, easier way is with fleshtool..

Yes, i've installed Gordons Gate, but phone wont go into recovery mode anymore and it doesn't flash led when I plug the charger into phone (i've left it last night on charger but no success)...Complete deadly now cause of bootloader unlock, strange...

this is strange.. not reacting on usb..

I don't know how to help u anymore..
btw what rom u're installed when the phone restarted twice? is it overclocked?
just curious
It was stock rom -> Eclair 2.1
No overclocking modules were installed...
I've came upon some similar thread on the internet, the guy had same problem, and someone suggested him that the only way to restore the device is to put it on RIFF JTAG box
Links are here:
jtagbox.com/jtag-news/riff-jtag-sony-ericsson-xperia-x8a-se-shakira-unbrick-boot-repair-supported/
youtube.com/watch?v=ujH_IpsskLg
....
So, my question for now is - Can I buy JTAG box from ebay, and soldered PCB for X8 from here ( multi-com.pl/index.php?itlskel_lang=en_US&itlskel_pgid=details&id_pr=8466 )...
Will that work it out ? Question goes to JTAG users hopefully.
Please modify URL's since I can't put full URL's yet
you just bought the phone rite? send it to service.
no need to buy anything to do it yourself. That riff box costs around $150 and there are people in various cities who might be able to repair your phone (check website of riff box) with fees but try with SE service centre first. You might get it done for free.
If you have followed the steps it really should not end up like that. It is really discouraging to read posts like yours. It makes me ponder twice whether I should go and try the unblock my bootloader myself.

I think SE center won't cost $150 (and if cost that much rather than buying those tools or pay SE i will buy another x8 it cost cheaper than that).
I agree with you, send it back to SE center and tell them u're upgrading phone software but the the power or internet down in the middle of process and your phone dead.
No, the thing is, i've already told them I was upgrading my software and phone crashed when I swaped my first phone, so if I send them back another phone in that short time I'll become suspect, and I highly doubt they'll accept my warranty
btw. I really don't know what could be the reason for bricking
Basebands versions were xxx015 on the both devices...
men try again with seus
just turn your pc/windows on safe mode with networking
ive experience that
then
do this like i said in other thread
try it again with this steps
open pc companion (dont plug your phone)
choose support zone click start
select phone software update
click start
then CLICK REPAIR PHONE
and that its you know the next step
you will see initializing AND downloading the phone software
Will try it tonight but I higly doubt since phone doesn't react with LED anyhow
Thank you for your tip anyway

There's nothing wrong trying right?
Besides if they're not accepting your warranty you will pay anyway...
And if SE center tell you to pay ask them how much in front before doing any reparation.
Maybe $10, $20 etc i doubt it will cost as high as new phone.

I guess.......and next time when you wanna root etc. just have the patience and read everything that is written here.
Never the less some phones are more durable in that matter ( i don't know why ). Some phones are like butter, 1st attempt and you are rooted. And with another you sweat like a pig and even then you can't do it right
well
Well,
I hope it'll get better
thanx
Before bringing your phone to service you could try:
- a factory reset. Maybe the unsuccessfull rooting attempt has messed up something you can fix this way.
- flashing a RUU and see if the issue remains. This usually sorts out...

noob question about rooting

hi. I read somewhere here about rooting using doomlord's method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375). my questions are:
1. will this method work for stock Xperia SP? Literally just out of the box, everything stock. running JB 4.1.2 v.254.
2. what are the chances of bricking my phone? i really want to root mine because i want custom ROMs on it but im really nervous because its my only phone, and this will be the first time ill do it.
thanks in advance. appreciate all your replies
1.-Yes, thats the method for .254: You need to flash .257 kernel first.
2.-Sony phones can't get "bricked"...99% of the times they only get a boot loop, which means your SP wont get past the Sony-Xperia logo. In this scenario you need to repair via Flashtool or Update Service. Flashtool is more effective for "bricked" phones.

I have done it 8 times, with no problems at all. At first one I have only offline charging bug, but when I repair software with PC Companion, than make root with this method again that solve the problem with offline charging.
But only root? When U first read than do - its unable to brick your phone.

First of all connect your phone in flashtool, select Devices -> Chek Drivers and check if you have ABD driver installed.
Have you enable USB Debugging? Phone have to be also connected in MSC mode.
And at last. Have you turn off Flashtool before running script??
So on. More questions ask better in "ROOTing" thread. Or at first read this thread from start to the end before aksing quiestions. Theres a lot of answers.

[Q] Forgot USB-debugging downgrading

Hi!
This is my first post an I hope I did put it on the right place and I havent found any other post that really matches my problem.
Anyway, I was so happy for being able to bring back stock rom on a rooted SGS2 I9100 who didnt worked proper with its root. In this case, no USB-debugging were necessary.
After this mission I felt ready to try to downgrade the SGS Advance I9070 from stock Jelly Bean to Stock Ginger Bread by mainly following one of all those tutorials about how to do it. And I know its said - enable USB-debugging.
But as I were interupted by my wife just before I were going to proceed, I totally forgot it when I finally went back to my work of downgrading. As I were a bit stressed, I just connected the phone to Odin and slammed the PDA-button like I did with the SGS2. It went smooth all the way through Odin and the green PASS showed up. But when the phone were about to boot up it stuck at the Samsung-logo. Its in a bootloop. After a short time of wondering about what went wrong, it struck my head I forgot to enable USB-debugging. Amen!
So, I forgot debugging while running JB-stock to downgrade to GB-stock. The only thing I can reach now is download-mode except the bootloop Samsung start interface. Its probably occured because I forgot enable debugging, right? And does it mean this device is bricked for real or is there anyway to bring back life?

Haha.. Well, I had to drive her to the shop and that was enough to make me lose my patience of remembering important rules just because I had to go with other important rules. Like the gentleman I am. :fingers-crossed:
Thanx for reply. It makes me glad you do believe its possible to fix this issue. The link you showed is on of those I been looking at before I got started. But after a lot of comparing between several links from i-net, I decided to go with the procedure that the majority declared. For example, in this link its said "re-partition" must be ticked in. The other guides said not. Only "reboot" and "time-reset" to be ticked in.
The stock firmwire I downloaded were from some address connected to Samsung. It means there were only one file with all included just to insert in the PDA. Now, afterwards..I do understand it isent that hard to fill in 3 lines myself instead of one. But it seemed simplier with only one at that time. As I am a newbie about changing software in phones, I were ready to make mistakes but not this mistake and I really dont know what guides who are the best to go with.
Do you think it will make any difference if I go with your link and try again?
Remember, the phone were not rooted. Im really not sure, but I think I read somewhere that if debugging are not enabled on official kernel, theres no way back because cant reach debugging in any way. But I hope its not true.
Now, as far as I understand in my case...what I did was to erase the operation system I had (stock 4.1.2) and filled it up with (stock 2.3.6) but it only reached the gates and not the internal of the phone. It means there are no operating system at all?
Then why Odin shows PASS? And if no communication files can reach the phone, how is it possible that the counter now shows the phone has been rooted? Yes, I tried to root it today and Odin showed PASS again. And as the counter counts, it must mean the phone is not 100% blocked from communication even without debugging enabled?
But still the phone act as described earlier. Only Samsung-logo, bootloop and I can only go forward to download-mode.
:crying:

Don't worry - as long as you have access to download mode you are fine :good:
I am not sure as I never downgraded to GB myself, but from my understanding of posts in here it is partitioning issue.
JB got different sizes or mount points (forgot exactly) of key partitions and that is what is wrong here - it cannot find some components to finish booting.
re-partition is the main thing here.
Get file from this guide.
Key point is:
9)Hit on PIT button and select the PIT file extracted from the downloaded package in first step above (GT-I9070_EUR_XX_8G.pit).
You should be able to use your 1-file-ROM and get it working, as long as you use .pit and tick re-partition.
Worst case scenario - flash JB again (no re-partition needed) and it will be working as before ;]

Ok, it makes me a bit more calm and Im starting to believe a bit, theres a way back for the phone to rise again. So you mean it might not be the failure of missed debugging, instead the critical main thing can be re-partiton?! It sounds very possible based on what you said.
The thing now is, ofcourse I would be satisfied if my first plan come true. But right now I really dont care what version it´ll be running, rooted or not. I only want it to act like a smartphone again n matter what´s installed. So I will go with your advise and test it one by one.
Thanx so far! To be continued..
SOLVED Forgot USB-debugging downgrading
I must admit I didnt really believed it wud work even I hoped it wud do. Before I started the new operation I gave it the chances 75% negative and 25% positive. But I was so wrong.
It really passed!!
Im so thankful for the support. To arneldna who made me reconsider this current version and tutorial for firmware downgrade. And to th3cr0w who explained and really pointed out the missing spot in my failure of action during the installing process.
The solution - Just to be sure, I followed the tutorial exactly. When it rebooted it showed up not to be my country region so I did it again with my nordic region all-in-one tar-file. This time just to be safe, I enabled usb-debugging and also unknown sources. Idk if it had any use but just in case of. And Voila..back to my region and everything seems to be as it was the first time I started up the phone when it was new last summer. After that I did a factory reset which I learned is useful to do.
As this was only one of my childrens phones, I actually got 3 more of the same to downgrade to work smooth again. But now I learned another lesson. I hope!
THANX A LOT to both of you! :good:

[Q] Completely Dead

Hi
what i did.
I unlocked the Bootloader via Flashtool
Rooted the device
Installed TW Recovery.
Installed iHackers 4.
All was fine until i saw the i wasnt connected to my Network Provider .
AHH i forgot to flash "Xperia Z1 - C6903 - Kernel + Baseband [14.3.A.0.757].ftf"
So i went into flashtool and flashed it, excluding everything execpt Kernel and Baseband.
The flashtool finshed and the device shut down. And thats it. Since then nothing. Not even
the led or something is showing any lifesignal. I tryed every button combi. The red reset button.
Tryed to enter flashmode.. NOTHING!!! What the ?! ANy ideas what i can do?
Last time i checked the accu was @ 93 %. I have it now on the charger dock hoping it is just a battery issue. No combination (pwr+vol+ or pwr+vol- etc.) working so far.
thanx

I started the Flashtool .. clicked on BLU and followed the instructions.
ANd the flashtool successfully unlocked the booloader
But thats not my problem. The Phone is dead.. I does not give
any lifesignes .. also the backup is useless if i cant get flashboot
or any way to use adb .. to work.

Yes it is a problem.
Even in this Tutorial is all well explained that you have to use the OFFICIAL Sony way to unlock Bootloader,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440597
..you did not followed the instructions and you unlocked with Flashtool which probably did not do his job right.
Maybe I am wrong but this is how supposed to be to avoid issues.
Then you phone is bricked and you have to follow other instruction to check if still can be resurrected, there is many Threads on XDA about this.

Wow i haven't thought that I get some nagging here instead of constructive suggestions. In any case i will let the phone on the charger for 24 hours and see if it helps. Also I DON'T THINK THIS IS A BOOTLOADER ISSUE!!! All worked fine.. I booted into ihackers 4 multiple times without any problems.. Also the Phone would show ANY signes of life, eg. LED RED or blinking etc..But nothing
ALSO:
"..you did not followed the instructions and you unlocked with Flashtool which probably did not do his job right."
In the "getting started" thread of z1 it is suggested to use the flashtool! And like i said .. it finished successfully..
Thank you for your answer and the nagging...

Ok, If you are so sure then Ok, but still weird, as I follow different instruction and never had a problem then people do on they way and later have problems. It can be a coincidence and maybe is not your case, but sometime thinking easy can compromise the whole process.
I flashed different patches on mine Kernel I kill my phone few times and mine was completely dead, no led nothing, but it boot into Flashmode or Fastboot, you have somehow go in that mode and flash again, this is the only soft solution.
If you will not be able to do so then you have to go with the Test Pins, open your back cover and try to resurrect it, the hard way.

I don't understand what went wrong. After flashing the Kernel and Baseband the flashtool said everything went fine eand restarted the device. It turned off and nothing since then. I cant even get into flashboot or flashmode. It feels likt the accu is broken because there is nothing happening whatever i do. I think there is no power. I will not open the device because i still have 2 years of waranty (i hope they repair it as waranty case, if i am lucky) Else I will pay for the repair. We'll see. If this is an accu failure it should be a waranty case.
I had it for about 8 hours on the charger without any signs of "life" in the "machine". Sometimes i feel like trowing it against a wall to see if it reanimates it... But i can keep myself from doing it. =)
We'll see..
probably stupid guess: maybe ur phone just stucked on something and may not be completely switched off??
press vol+ and power button, see if ut vibrates 3 times
if it does, congrats an flash kernel again

Is it getting red led when you try to charge it?
If not then its Sony's problem probably a faulty device. Send warranty and don't mention bootloader, root or ROM.

Hard reset.
Flash a stock FTF using flashtool.
If that does not work, leave it on charge overnight and try again tomorrow
