Hi guys,
Basically I would like to install the ICS rom on my Galaxy S i9000 but have absolutely no knowledge of how to do so having never installed a custom rom before. Looking at the 'tutorial' for installing ICS leaves me just as clueless as it seems the individual steps require a decent knowledge of knowing what you are doing!
Also, I have discovered from attempts in the past that my Galaxy is one of those that is unable to go into download mode so that is another thing that I need help with (the link to the thread for the solution to this problem in the Galaxy FAQ is dead).
So yeah, any help much appreciated or even a point in the direction of the most thorough guide there is.
Cheeers.
Well, before you do anything you need to enable download mode. Think it's a case of enabling USB debugging and then adb, although I never had to do it.
Secondly you should probably stick a stock gingerbread rom on with odin.
Flash a kernel with odin.
Flash ICS
Flash ICS again.
Going straight to ICS with very little experience of custom ROMs may be a bit difficult especially given it's alpha status.
my phone also had the lock on the Download mode, seem like some service provides disable the feature to "try and prevent" people to flash custom roms as this voids warranty in South Africa. I found a fix on Google but cant remember where.. so if you dont get it right... some guys made a homemade jig here is a link on how to make it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
and when flashing a custom rom its best to follow the roms tutorial and usually there are post regard similar issues that could be encounter in the process. so the search function ends up helping alot instead of having to read thru 100 pages lol
its all new to us in the beginning then it just becomes second nature lol
i recon this is a nice tutorial to use
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-update-for-galaxy-s-i9000-custom-rom/
even has a method to return to stock

Josh. This is NOT a rom which you should pop your cherry on. It is buggy, not very fast and you need a good working knowledge of how to recover a soft bricked phone. If you cannot get into download mode, you would be foolish to flash ANY rom. There is a fix, search xda.
I admire the size of your swingers, but would recommend you gain a little more flashing experience.
However, good luck if you do decide to flash - there's plenty of help here if all goes wrong.
i "popped my custom rom cherry" on ICS build 12 i screwed it up when trying to go for build 13 but i found this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14273101&postcount=1
i installed the latest gingerbread kernel then the rom files and it was fine ater that and im just about to put build 14 on now so dont worry to much about it. Ive never got my phone to a state where i cant fix it, so if me a supernoob can recover a brick just about anyone could

I know there are probably loads of threads about this, but my questions are a little specific and I was hoping to get some direct answers.
If there are other threads then feel free to post a link to help me find them and I will be happy to read it.
I'm new to rooting/flashing and have a few questions...
I have had my SGS for almost 5 months now, and it's a little laggy.
I've heard about Flashing/Rooting before, but I've never tried it for fear of bricking my phone.
So could anyone please tell me:
1. If I do by any chance brick my phone, is it fixable? (I hear the chances are very low and also I think I read that Flashing can fix it?)
2. Should I flash to 2.3.3 or is a custom rom a better choice? (Performance/battery/everything overall wise)
3. If I flash the phone, will I still need a lagfix or will the rom include a lagfix or is the rom THE lagfix?
and 4. If custom rom is suggested, which rom is best or which are the best choices?
If anyone could shed some light it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
There are plenty of threads and FAQs on xda answering all your questions. A simple search should bring up plenty. This is a good place to start. But I will give few quick answers.
1. If your phone has download mode working (Vol Down + Home + Pwr) then its very easy to recover from a bad flash. All you have to do is flash again.
2. I’d go with a stock 2.3.3 ROM (like the latest JVO). Some might say custom roms are better since they have more features, But I never felt the need to install one since stock deodexed roms give me all the options I need.
3. IMO newer ROMs (after 2.2.1) don’t really need lag fixing like older ones.
Thank you very much for your reply.
I guess I'll do a search for each of my questions and see if I can get any more answers out of it. 8)
EDIT: Just thought I'd better check that my phone could even go into Download Mode and found out that I can't. )8
Looks like I'll just wait for the 2.3.3 update anyway.
Hey guys!
I'm a quite cautious person when it comes to my personal belongings and especially when something happens to my dear Galaxy S. But I'm so tired of the lag and the annoying force-closes that I just want to mash the crap out of it.
Since I got 8 months left of my cellphone plan I can't/I don't want to buy a new phone, but i'd like my phone to act as a new one so I thought "why not flash a new rom" but the problem is that I dont find a good tutorial to do so. And also I am afraid of "bricking" it.
The only thing I've done is to root it using the Gingerbreak app, otherwise everything is stock.
Can someone please explain in a "newb-friendly" way how to flash a new rom, most preferably one of the "stock" ICS-roms. Step by step and with all the links needed.
Noteworthy:
Baseband version: I9000XXJVK
Firmware version: 2.3.3
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWJVB
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Please help a newbie in need!
dude you need to folow a certain rom quide. there is no one general quide for all roms. Some of them require different actions, and some are so simple to apply that you only have to choose a zip file and wait
and don't be affraid of bricking your device. I got BSOD (black screen of death) twice but connecting to PC and flashing via ODIN solved my problem and my phone works like a charm
cheers
v
don't worry dude. they got all the guide for you to flash to their rom. Most important is you must backup all your thing before flashing rom. The process is pretty easy...wish you good luck.
My opinion is: There is no 100% safe method, but I have flashed rom many times and I had only one problem when I was trying flash new ICS custom rom using CWM, but I think I made a biggest misteake - uncharged battery.. I guess.
I'm not an expert, but from my point of view flashing wiith odin it's more safe.

Hi hopefully someone could maybe help me and point me in the right direction as im still very new to android and cant quite grasp what i need to do? and scared ill brick my shiney new phone!!
ok so i have put rowmow ics 4.0.3v1 on my phone but last night i wanted to try and put another rom on but every time i go into cwm it starts to install rom but will not pass setting permissions i am unsure as to what i need to do next
i have cf kernel 3.0.15-19220zclp1-cl131270
superuser and root checker says im rooted?
driving me mad as to what i have done or i am doing wrong
ive read different things here and there and some saying to flash to a kl3 but unsure what that is or if it even right ?
sorry 4 the noobish questions but i guess we have all had to start some where and this is me starting and hopefully soon grasp what i need to do?
many thanks 4 reading this and hopefully pointing me to what i need to do next!!
Looks like you do not have full root.
If you are Noob then you should read all the instructions properly otherwise you would brick your phone.
It is not a good idea to mess with ICS chinese leak, be careful.
i did read all instructions properly and as stated in op thread is was supposed to have full root
now your answer was not what i was really looking for some help or advice would be better rather than stating be careful!!
how can i rectify the problem to get full root back? so i can try different rom
i appreciate that you took time out to read my post but you was not very helpful
you need to provide more info..
if you're trying to go from a ICS rom to a GB ROM then you first need to flash a gingerbread kernel and then reboot recovery and flash the GB ROM from there.
its sorted i worked it out i was going to another ics rom i installed abys 3.9 installed new rom and flashed cf kernel and new rom working fine
probably an easier way to do it but that was the only way i could get past the permission problem

You just said "another ICS rom" and mentioned you are a noob, so with so much of unclear things I just wanted to let you know that something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526852 could happen.
anyway, I am glad you could sort it out.

Hi there,
Can anyone help me in installing 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on my Samsung Galaxy Note?
Any help in this regards will be highly appreciated.
Regards,
Hafiz
You've to root your phone and install CWM first. It's pretty easy to do. Open up the dev section and you'll find everything there.
Once done, select the ROM that you need. ICS Stunner v5 is by far the best ICS ROM for GN. Read it's forum in the dev section. If you like it, follow the steps mentioned in the forum, it's pretty simple.
Come back if you need any help!
Yeah man you gotta read read and read more...then you tube

I know! Even I posted a thread like this when I was new to Android world.

I would wait for the official ICS, because if you want to revert back from Custom ICS Roms it sometimes becomes complicated.
I think we'll see the official ICS May 2012.

Well y'all keep thinking ....or just take the leap like everyone else did....do your home work...like"how to root galaxy note". Hint....plenty of threads and videos out there

There are quite a few threads for letting you know the detailed process of installing ICS on Note.
You will have to root your phone first. There is also a nice list of methods to do this.
Go to the Developer section and check the 1st post of ICS Stunner thread.
Read it carefully and also watch the youtube vidoe. All the steps are listed for a newbie..
starting like so......
!) are you rooted ? if not check here
2) are you familiar with how to get to Recovery mode and download mode ? else read carefully
* Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button Until N7000 Boot appears Leave Power Button but keep the other two Buttons Pressed you'll get to Recovery Mode with some options.
* Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button Until n7000 Boot appears leave Power Button keep the other two Buttons Pressed you'll get to Download Mode
- PS : Basicly Up Means Recovery And Down obviously means Download thats how you get to the modes. now recovery can clean applications cache and lets you factory set your device (as if you just bought it and started for first time) other than that you need to know what a kernel is (Android Base and it's a Linux kernel) you can flash any you like as long as it matches your phone's Type example (N7000 kernels match GNote) but I9100 doesn't neither do others so watch for this and mainly search in the right forum so you wont get too far, flashing isn't risky that much but keep your files saved.... especially EFS folder for IMEI (there are many ways in each ROM thread you'll probably have the method and explaine of it NOW WATCH OUT TO FLASH CUTOM ROMS YOU NEED ROOT AND FOR Samsung (ROOT == Void Warrenty) so take the risk at your shoulders we are not responssible for any mistake read and follow read 10 times and act once so you wont fail
Download means using Odin and flashing from PC, Increases counter in Download Mode so Samsung will know that you flashed something and it wont intrest them what cause you have no warrenty left, if you flash stock ROMS (not modified) the counter wont increase, most cases you do that if you have a region problem or a curiosity or even a soft brick (means your phone has no Recovery Mode and no Vibration or even a screen text just Download Mode works (u'll use odin to wake it up by flashing a stock ROM) a hard brick means no one can help you if its caused by flashing only a guy or company which repaires and uses JTAG or replaces part (MotherBoard).....
for now thats all....
now installation is simple ROOT and flash that ICS Look theme thats it after you ROOT you'll CMW mostly with SU (SuperUser) permissions so no need for odin flash via Recovery options... and you're set!
GOOD LUCK
* any kernel will do you for a GingerBread ROM (Stock == Factory) but watch for ICS Repacks not just any works. may get Bootloops if wrong
Hello,
AS the title says, I Bricked my Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 Gingerbread 2.3.4.
Here is the brief story.
1. Rooted my phone successfully by following instructions from forum discussion - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282011
2. Flashed rom "cm_ace-ota-eng-.beta8" - Beta 8 for Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 (16 Apr 2012) downloaded from website - http://galaxyics.com/releases/phone/2
3. Meantime installed CWM through Odin Multidownloade 4.38, followed instructions from website - http://androidadvices.com/how-to-update-samsung-galaxy-pro-b7510-to-jpkc4-2-2-2-firmware/
4. Once cm_ace-ota-eng-.beta8 is flashed, rebooted phone. Here where things went bad. Now, I cant boot to Android. Samsung log flashes and its stuck at BLANK Screen with sky blue color.
Not sure, whether its a soft brick or totally bricked my phone.
I can boot to CWM recovery menu. I even tried to flash different rom but in vain.
I tried "Android 4.0.3 based Custom ROM for Samsung Vibrant — Ice Cream Zenwich" for second time but no luck followed instructions from website - http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-3-based-custom-rom-for-samsung-vibrant-ice-cream-zenwich/
Not sure, how do I fix this problem.
I searched on google for recovery options however, cant seem to figure out how that can be done. Request for your assistance.

from where can I get the stock rom ?
I searched google for stock rom and came across following article

is that ok to follow the instructions from there ?

Make surr you can boot INto dl mode using power-vol down-home combo.
To make cm beta 8 work: wipe system and data, and cache. Flash beta 8 then after inatalling zip, install it again without wiping anything. Then reboot.

good enough to get phone back to life
I will give that a try and post back how it goes...

You can't just buy a mobile and next day flash what is a beta rom without at least spending a day or two reading the stickies on here and reading and understanding the complexities of flashing what is a rom which still says on the opening post for devs only. Some.people who have followed Maclaws rom from the start still experience problems when flashing a new beta. Hope you read enough to understand about flashing, rooting, backing up etc before you try again to install Ace's most awesome and ground-breaking rom. Take full advantage of what, as was previously stated, a very lucky escape.

Very true. I was really lucky !!!
Now, phone working perfectly fine with Android 4.0.4 (Kernal V 2.6.35.7-perf-CL945787)
However, noticed one glitch though. Camera is not working with this rom, when I tap on Camera, I get a message " Can't connect ot the camera ".
I havent rebooted my phone, since it recovered ( i mean post flashing ). Perhaps, a reboot would help.
If the camera doen't work, then I need to live with that, thinking at least phone is working condition

Guys,
Sorry for the trouble again...
I need one more help.
I have backed up my contacts using kies before flashing my mobile. However, when I connect my phone to my laptop using usb, kies doen't detect the phone. I beleive, thats because, kies doesnt recognise the new andriod kernel.
Is there any way to restore my backed up contacts other than using kies ? I have around 600-650 contacts.
Thanks for any inputs.
Maclaw's ics is aosp. kies wont detect any rom other than Samsung's stock rom.
The camera stull doesn't work with our ics, so just wait till next beta.
On your kies problem, kies only recognizes stock roms.
You should always keep your contacts on your google account!

Is there any other application, using which I can restore my contacts ?
I mean, an application which is capable of reading Kies bkp file and restore contacts or any tool which can read the Kies bkp file and allow me to imposrt contacts in csv format or at least some readable format ?
Perhaps, answer would be NO but still wondering....
For contacts you can try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882861&page=2 but I dont know if it really works... first time i flashed my ace I got the same problem and I finally give up (damn Kies!)
You should backup your contact on sd file (Contact-Export-Sd) before flashing, its the most easy way!
For camera there's no way, it doesnt't work on the rom yo've installed, it's clear on the site where you downloaded it (Bucktracker section: https://github.com/GalaxyICS/android/issues?sort=created&direction=desc&state=open).
Hope I help you.
...sorry for my english
I remembered I did that before. By converting the contact file made by kies but I forgot already. Sorry can't help ya there!
