Hi hopefully someone could maybe help me and point me in the right direction as im still very new to android and cant quite grasp what i need to do? and scared ill brick my shiney new phone!!
ok so i have put rowmow ics 4.0.3v1 on my phone but last night i wanted to try and put another rom on but every time i go into cwm it starts to install rom but will not pass setting permissions i am unsure as to what i need to do next
i have cf kernel 3.0.15-19220zclp1-cl131270
superuser and root checker says im rooted?
driving me mad as to what i have done or i am doing wrong
ive read different things here and there and some saying to flash to a kl3 but unsure what that is or if it even right ?
sorry 4 the noobish questions but i guess we have all had to start some where and this is me starting and hopefully soon grasp what i need to do?
many thanks 4 reading this and hopefully pointing me to what i need to do next!!
Looks like you do not have full root.
If you are Noob then you should read all the instructions properly otherwise you would brick your phone.
It is not a good idea to mess with ICS chinese leak, be careful.
i did read all instructions properly and as stated in op thread is was supposed to have full root
now your answer was not what i was really looking for some help or advice would be better rather than stating be careful!!
how can i rectify the problem to get full root back? so i can try different rom
i appreciate that you took time out to read my post but you was not very helpful
you need to provide more info..
if you're trying to go from a ICS rom to a GB ROM then you first need to flash a gingerbread kernel and then reboot recovery and flash the GB ROM from there.
its sorted i worked it out i was going to another ics rom i installed abys 3.9 installed new rom and flashed cf kernel and new rom working fine
probably an easier way to do it but that was the only way i could get past the permission problem

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.
You just said "another ICS rom" and mentioned you are a noob, so with so much of unclear things I just wanted to let you know that something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526852 could happen.
anyway, I am glad you could sort it out.
cheers

First of all I'd like to apologize because I'm sure this has been covered already but I just feel more comfortable asking myself.
I have had my g1 for a couple of months now and I'm starting to get all itchy for root for all the obvious reasons. I hoping someone can answer some questions or point me in the right direction.
I have ota CRB43 build on my phone. I see LOTS of different instructions for rooting.. I'm wondering what one I should go by. I also notice some people say to take out the SD card instead of mounting to prevent possibly bricking your phone... should I do that or is it better to mount with the usb? And after following whatever instructions is there anything else necessary to do?
I was also interested in what themes people are using. Can I jump right into that after rooting or is there something else I will need to do. Any links for themes you are using would be great also.
Thanks so much… I really appreciate it.. Thought I had more questions.. If I remember anything else I’ll update.
I used Gizmodo's guide - very simple and clear.
http://gizmodo.com/5146797/how-to-hack-android-for-multitouch-web-browsing-on-the-t+mobile-g1
If you follow it step-by-step you'll wind up with an old build, but you'll have root and be ready to step up to any new build. New builds are easy once you've rooted - rename to update.zip and flash using recovery (explained in the guide above).
You'll also want to get the newest radio (after rooting per directions above) - Download the ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip file from http://www.htc.com/www/support/android/adp.html#s3 -- Rename to update.zip and flash as usual.
And I had absolutely no problems mounting the SD Card via the phone itself. Just make sure you cleanly eject the card from your PC every time, to avoid corruption.
And let me suggest CyanogenMod for your build.. Simply the fastest and most stable Android build out there - "official" firmware included.
Thanks a lot for your response! It was helpful and I checked out your link.. I was looking at -
http://androidsocialmedia.com/root-access/android-g1-root-access-why-how
originally, but I think they look similar. Thanks for the radio info as well.. anything else besides that I'll need to update?
let me ask one more thing- what's the difference between CyanogenMod and the others available?
thanks again for your help!

Well, I did skip the SPL - Some ROMS require a different SPL (Secondary Program Loader/Launcher, I think..) to free up additional space on the device. Mostly the Hero based ROMs. I haven't touched any of those, need someone else to help there.

Cyanogen is tweaking the heck out of Android - endlessly enhancing it for performance and stability. Cyanogen has a few visual tweaks but mostly it looks like stock Android with all the improvements under the hood.
The other builds.. Mostly visual, in my opinion. They all have fans though, check out the threads under Development for more details. Also, the Android ROM Database - http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/android/android_build_information.asp
Dude, thanks so much for all this info.. http://www.simonwalkerphotos.com/and...nformation.asp was really helpful.
last question I'm gonna ask.. if i hard reset do is it going to unroot my phone?
Again.. you were really helpful! I appreciate it so much!
Nope it will not unroot you're phone
No, you'll just go back to a fresh version of whatever ROM you have installed. However, some ROMs (Like Cyanogen) put some apps in the /data folder, so a wipe could break the ROM. Typically it is better to flash after a wipe. But you won't loose root either way.
Only way I know how to loose root is to flash a none rooted ROM.
The only thing I would do is avoid the DangerSPL until you either need it or know what you are doing. Otherwise its pretty much hard to brick your phone unless your trying to with a low battery.
I'd just like to take a second to thank everyone for their help, especially Saiboogu. Like I said in the first post, I'm sure this stuff was covered somewhere but this really made me feel a bit more confident. Thanks for not flaming me... I'm actually a bit surprised at the friendly responses... again thanks everyone.
Most likely I'll be able to get around to rooting on monday or tuesday.. I'll post updates just for the fun of it.
Take it easy guys
Lol well you posted it in the right section. Of course you are going to get help
What alritewhadeva said .. You ask in the right place, we'll help. You're off to a good start.

here is a tried and tested guide for rooting your phone. it is a bit outdated but the method that would be most preferred for rooting. there is also a guide to one click root in my sig. it was written for noobs so it is fairly comprehensive.
here is a very well written guide by nephron on how to get hero on your phone after you root it.
finally when you want to go back to stock, you look here.
i hope these links help you. i am very tired and must go to bed now. if you still need help i can help you once i get up in a few hours, but since you seem fairly knowledgeable, i wouldn't be surprised to wake up to you having a hero rom. i hope these links prove to be helpful.

i had to show you the pimp's prayer. don't act like them training wheels still aren't on your pimp cane lol.
sorry to derail your thread skauk
I am a quick learner, I am thinking of signing up for pimp university though, I hear they have a great program and helped many succesful pimps on their way
I am not sorry bout derailing your thread, I am a thread robber too, you know that g1f**d up thread, yeah that was me, I stole that **** and got away with it, my follow bandits and I (you know who I am talking) we are good
does the procedure tell you how to backup your stock rom or do i need to root it before i can backup the current rom in case I wasnt to restore ???
It gives you the option of backing up but if it really works I do not know, but once you change the spl, it stays at that spl unless you flash another spl or unroot by rc29/7. I would root it, wipe it once you are in recovery, apply hardspl, flash your rom of choice other than hero or xrom( I suggest cyanogenmod stable 4.04) boot up, wait the ten to 15 minutes for the initial boot, sign in to google, then reboot back into recovey by holding home and power at the g1 screen and make a nandroid backup of your new rom
My Build number is not RC anything its CRC37 ?? do i just follow rooting UK RC8 or higer instructions on the thread mentioned in post 1 of this thread ?
Now I am gonna follow david's lead and I am going to sleep finally

Why not hero or xrom ??? I saw a thread on a hero ROM that most regarded as fast and usable
thanks for all your info guys im still not 100% confident to be honest bit of a grey are linux lol
Hmmm... why not hero or an xrom because they require the danger spl first, which I suggest that you get more comfortable with your phone and flashing first. Rc was the first line of android coding that refered to android 1.0, cr refers to a 1.5 cupcake build. You downgrade to rc7/rc29 to take advantage of a security loophole that google patched in later builds but that is the old fashion way of rooting which unfoutunely you don't have to go through since you have the one root click option. Don't expect google to leave that exploit open for to long, will be proboly be patched in the 1.6 firmware
Hi guys,
Basically I would like to install the ICS rom on my Galaxy S i9000 but have absolutely no knowledge of how to do so having never installed a custom rom before. Looking at the 'tutorial' for installing ICS leaves me just as clueless as it seems the individual steps require a decent knowledge of knowing what you are doing!
Also, I have discovered from attempts in the past that my Galaxy is one of those that is unable to go into download mode so that is another thing that I need help with (the link to the thread for the solution to this problem in the Galaxy FAQ is dead).
So yeah, any help much appreciated or even a point in the direction of the most thorough guide there is.
Cheeers.
Well, before you do anything you need to enable download mode. Think it's a case of enabling USB debugging and then adb, although I never had to do it.
Secondly you should probably stick a stock gingerbread rom on with odin.
Flash a kernel with odin.
Flash ICS
Flash ICS again.
Going straight to ICS with very little experience of custom ROMs may be a bit difficult especially given it's alpha status.
my phone also had the lock on the Download mode, seem like some service provides disable the feature to "try and prevent" people to flash custom roms as this voids warranty in South Africa. I found a fix on Google but cant remember where.. so if you dont get it right... some guys made a homemade jig here is a link on how to make it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
and when flashing a custom rom its best to follow the roms tutorial and usually there are post regard similar issues that could be encounter in the process. so the search function ends up helping alot instead of having to read thru 100 pages lol
its all new to us in the beginning then it just becomes second nature lol
i recon this is a nice tutorial to use
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-update-for-galaxy-s-i9000-custom-rom/
even has a method to return to stock

Josh. This is NOT a rom which you should pop your cherry on. It is buggy, not very fast and you need a good working knowledge of how to recover a soft bricked phone. If you cannot get into download mode, you would be foolish to flash ANY rom. There is a fix, search xda.
I admire the size of your swingers, but would recommend you gain a little more flashing experience.
However, good luck if you do decide to flash - there's plenty of help here if all goes wrong.
i "popped my custom rom cherry" on ICS build 12 i screwed it up when trying to go for build 13 but i found this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14273101&postcount=1
i installed the latest gingerbread kernel then the rom files and it was fine ater that and im just about to put build 14 on now so dont worry to much about it. Ive never got my phone to a state where i cant fix it, so if me a supernoob can recover a brick just about anyone could
I apologize if this thread is in the wrong place, I read around the forum and couldn't find anything related to rooting a SGS with 2.3.4 .
Please be patient with me I am new at this, but i read about the fact that rooting your phone can drastically improve your phone's performance as well as get rid of those annoying adds in the apps and it grants you the ability to use cracked apps. So my request to this fine community is: Can someone please post a complete guide on how to root a samsung gaalaxy s running 2.3.4 or post a link to such a guide? And please keep in mind I don't know a lot of things about this so i could really use a detailed guide. I want to thank you in advance for your time and your patience.
I'm not blaming you but you could have done a little reserch before

If it helped you -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\/
Thank you for your post, I will try this guide and give some feedback, once agian thank you.
I would also like a guide on how to unroot the device and go back to my current software ( 2.3.4 XXJVQ) in case something goes wrong. Once again thank you for your help and your patience.
google my friend
if it goes wrong it's not cause of the root. juste try another firmware.
One last question: I just read that rooting and flashing are 2 different things. Does this mean that once I follow the guide posted above(which says its rooting but once i read a bit it actually seems to mean flashing) I will have full right on my phone or do I have to root it afterwards ?
Actualy this is just about rooting.
if you want a flash :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259240
It won't be rooted after this. Apply the first tuto for root.
About two years ago when I had my own S I9000 I was able to flash a rom no problems..
But now.. man I am just so lost in all the information.
I have completely forgotten how to flash. I've read several things here and there but none seem to point me into a guide that makes sense..
I just can't get the info I need to know how to flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1852546
This guide makes sense..
but I haven't got recovery..
I need to install the Clockwork Recovery mod but I have no idea.
TL;DR
can someone please provide a step by step guide on how to get a custom rom onto an I9000 device?
1. recovery
2. root
3. rom
right?
but how? please help me in the right direction.
Same problem as me im unsure on all this stuff too just waiting for reply's
