I was in download mode trying to download a SpeedMod Kernel following this CyanogenMod tutorial:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
It locked, I had to unplug the cable in the middle of download mode and take out the phone battery.
Now I'm getting the Phone ! Computer error message and I've tried all the unbricking methods. Battery, SD, SIM card out, ODIN3, USB IN, Vol UP+DOWN+POWER buttons pressed, BATTERY IN, ODIN3, etc etc. NOTHING IS WORKING.
Doesn't work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911&highlight=bricked
The above without Odin doesn't work either.
This is urgent because I'm leaving for Taiwan in 8 hours and I was depending on the phone to make calls when I get there. I can't believe that this bull**** is happening at this time, out of all times. I'm about to email everyone on Craigslist selling a Captivate, and I don't have time for a jig.

Anyone have any advice for a hard brick captivate with no soldering skills?
There are several ways to make a jig or you can buy a jig. Soldering wouldn't be required unless u are trying to jtag or make the phone unbrickable.
Anyone can solder a Jig.... Its not difficult. If your phone is hard bricked (no signs of life) then you will either need to develop epic soldering skills OR send it Adams or Joshs way to get it modded.
You can make a jig from radio shack for a dollar. Don't solder anything.

Somebody on here has a couple of jigs for like $15. I made one for about the same price. It's easy and necessary if you are going to flash and have a newer phone. It works every time.
Try this. Open the one click odin 3 (the jh6 stock rom version). Unplug the battery. Plug the usb cable in and press both volume buttons and the power button. Put the battery back in and as you do that release the power button but keep holding the volume.buttons. this should put you in download mode. Good luck.

it is possible for the screen to be black and still be in download mode, i had it happen, and reflashed via odin on a black screen, odin still saw the phone so i said what the hell and click start, it worked successfully. so try th meathod above and dont be discouraged if the screen is still black.
also re download the stock rom and odin downloader. it may have been a corrupt file that caused it.
if those dont work buy a jig. pain i know but what else can you do? do you have insurance?
This is an weird problem that I think is fairly rare. I freaked out when this happened. I was able to get all the colors of the rainbow to appear on my phone. It happened to me 4 or 5 times before I finally managed to flash to stock. I just pulled the battery sd and sim every time it happened and flashed again. The phone is not bricked just keep trying and it should work

I'm like, the pro at bricking these things.
ANYWAYS,
I flashed that new 2.3.2 leak, worked okay. Wanted to go back to firefly, and didn't want the AT&T logo, so I flashed a i9000 rom, so it wouldn't put the stupid logo at boot, But it didn't have a CSC (apparently that was needed) well, I flash that with odin, I flash speedmod so I can install firefly. I do that and then I reboot the phone. And now it won't power on.
I just ordered a jig, will that boot a fully bricked no power on captivate into download mode?
from what ive heard if you cant get power you are SOL.
speaker magnet = warranty return
Mine is without power too. What sucks is I just got this like a week ago as a warranty replacement for the shutdown issue. What's this about a speaker magnet?
By "no power on", do you mean your battery is dead? I can't imagine the jig won't work if the battery has power. That would be a hardware issue, and probably should be repaired by the manufacturer.
Could you try another battery, one from a friend with a Captivate?
Not battery dead, unless it killed it when it failed. Though I did wonder about that. Don't know anyone else with a cappy, anyone got a multimeter to test battery voltages?

batteries fine. My brother has a captivate also. The bootloader is jacked up.
Hmmm, I've had boot loops, phone !, and a few other fails that the jig fixed. But I haven't seen an all black screen yet. Wish you the best.

I completely killed my phone.
I was flashing with Odin 1 click, and it got stuck at the factoryfs.rfs. After I long while I had to disconnect it and now it is dead. No PC--!--Phone screen, no battery charging indicator, nothing. Not even my home made jig is working. 3 button combo not working, USB + VolUP + VolDown not working either. The Vol UP + Power HW test screen is gone too,
This happened to me once before with a failed Odin flash too. Completely unresponsive device. I did manage to get it back with the jig. But this time it seems I completely killed it.
It's weird though, because the most important step went fine (the bootloader/sbl.bin step). This sucks
Hmm idk got that yesterday check your jig. If you have a Meter to test its output is wound up having to rebuild my jig with 6 resistors to get the ohm I needed to force download. Do a search there is a guy that made a jig using a igo micro usb tip is used the same thing today but had to test out several different sets of resistors before I got dl mode

The only way to completely brick the captivate is to have a phone that did not come with the 3-button combo and have not flashed dg's 3 button fix and to have a broken micro-usb port so that a jig will not work. So in reality no its not possible.
If I were you I would check your jig and try again

this is false.
i bricked one with a bootloader flash from armani....i was stupid to leave it in the CWM flashable i made
and i have another one that is completely dead...unrelated to flashing, as it was stock JH7...even my jig wont bring it back
Yeah well. I'm going to buy a jig from ebay (does the Fascinate jig works with the Captivate as well?
Otherwise, I'll just get a used Captivate for cheap. Would love a new phone, but can't justify the expense of a Nexus S or something.
Another option, is it possible to just replace the motherboard? would that work? If so, I can get one for spare parts.
I'll be going back to a feature phone for the next couple of weeks though : ( . I loved my cappy. It's been a terrible week though, it's like I'm on a roll of bad news. Oh well, it's just a phone.

How much are you planning on spending? I would just go to to Radio Shack massive bag of resistors is 12 bucks and the iGo micro usb connector is 10 bucks so 22 bucks and you have an easy jig and pretty much unlimited resistors for all the bricks. I say thats the best way. i have enough resistors now to unbrick everyones captivates for the next year.
Go for the new Infuse, its a faster and upgraded captivate. Or just wait for the Iphone 5

Hey guys. I've had my cappy since last august (one year, obviously) and today an act of god happened while I was trying to flash my phone to serendipity 6.4 - lightning struck my dorm building (poor college student), and the power went out.
anywho, as you know the warranty period is one year (stupid if you're locked in for 2 years, imho) and guess what? my warranty expired YESTERDAY. FML. called AT&T and they won't let me get a new one now, and I'm not eligible for an upgrade. so... i have two options - shell out a lot of cash that I don't have for an insurance replacement or new phone, or fix my phone. I've tried making a jig, and it didn't work. None of the key combos work. It always goes to the phone-warning-computer screen. I searched and searched for a miracle solution but found nothing. Does anyone have anything I can try?
If not... is there anyone out there with an HTC inspire or captivate they'd be willing to sell me? This is the only phone I have, I don't have a backup, nor a home phone line.
With the pc screen you can't hold down the volume buttons and plug in usb with Odin running? If you're on gb kf1 bootloaders I remember seeing somewhere that screen is download mode. Worth a try.
That's one of my biggest fears. Precisely why I started using my laptop for flashes.

If ur seeing signs of some kind of life, then ur not hard bricked.
Edit: This may get u into download mode... Pull battery, insert usb into computer (with Odin already open), insert micro usb into ur phone, replace battery. If u get into download mode, put the battery cover on then proceed.

well, it gives me the phone-!-computer screen but nothing else. Jig failed, odin fails, nothing will put it in download.
Edit: for the record, I was using Serendipity 7 before, and had that horrid battery drain problem, so I was trying to flash back to 6.4... if it matters.
^ If u can't get into Recovery, I edited my post above to maybe help with download mode.

You said JIG failed i really doubt that it will fail try with another JIG.
What bootloaders you are on ?
You try only holding volume down or only holding volume up while plugging into pc from phone off state. ( best way to make sure is pull battery and replace without pushing any buttons. )??

This is precisely the reason why I do all my flashing from my laptop and I have a jig (or two) around me...and an entire pack of resistors on my desk somewhere. I went to the shack the other day and bought the 10 dollar super pack of resistors, and as a Computer Engineering major, I should never have to buy resistors ever again...I gives you somewhere around 500 resistors of differing resistance.
worked with another jig (a better made one)? Gratz!!
After a conversation with AD last night, I am pretty sure my Exhibit is "semi-hard" bricked. It will power up after you remove the battery, but not go into recovery. After reading a little, I have discovered a tool called a "USB jig" which will force a device behaving in this way into recovery mode. It can then be recovered via ODIN. Has anyone used a USB jig on our phone? The phones listed as compatible don't include the Exhibit, but often the Exhibit is not included on lists of devices, even when it's compatible. So, I was asking if anyone here has experience with a USB jig. If so, what was your experience and how did it go? I will need to get ODIN and learn to use it, as the second part of bringing my phone back from the dead. Thanks for your help.
About the jig i read a long time ago because some soft brick fear but was never used by me, its basically a small resistence circuit that somebody with electronic knowledge can do. Easely you could get one in ebay. So im almost sure it could work with the galaxy exhibit (because is simillar to galaxy W).
About Odin, the instructions are in the las thread (... not good thread). Download the file. Unzip anywhere you like in the PC. read the instructions. Read again. Then do it. Its easy because it was/is the main way to write stock firmware in samsung any devices.
Yes the USB jig works on this phone. I had need of it once and made my own, it was rather easy and very useful.

That is awesome to hear! It looks simple enough to build one. Too bad I'm not in grad school, anymore, where there was an electronics building station in the lab. I will have to see if I can get all the components together to make one, as buying off ebay will take a few days and be annoying. Unless someone here has one I can borrow.....
Added note: bought a jig off ebay for 99 cents. Hopefully, it will work. Now, I just wait....
