Keyboard lag - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello I'm having some keyboard lag on my brand new device. It only picks up about 80% of my keystrokes on keyboard pro.
Any advice? I did a restore from my sgs2 settings.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk

think its a firmware issue. post your current 'about phone' specs.

Hi, I am in the process of updating it for the second time. I had two updates!!!
The first update I had was:
PDA KK9, Phone KK5, and CSC KK9
Now I just updated to:
PDA KL7, Phone KL7, and CSC KL7
Let's see how this works. I'll update again!
EDIT: It seems to have been fixed!

Hey guys. I just wanted to ask if anyone here uses smart keyboard pro. It only seems to be happening with this keyboard but it seems to be missing the keys I hit. Its rather annoying. I've tried a lot of other keyboards and I don't have the issue with them. But this is my favorite keyboard. I wrote the programmer a week ago and I imagine because of the holidays he's busy.
Does anyone else have this issue of the keyboard not picking up all the keys you hit?
Thanks.
Kent.

I have the same issue.
The ONLY major lag/slowdown I get with my Note is when I'm using the keyboard, ANY keyboard that is...
I've tried smart keyboard, swiftkey & even ice cream sandwich keyboard, all are slow and when typing the keyboard is slow, cannot keep up resulting in mistakes...
I'm running on 2.3.6 and stock rom/firmware...
Hopefully ICS will fix this issue.

Bump!
Strange why some users have this lag issue with the keyboard whilst others do not....
At the end of the day it's the SAME phone having the same hardware...
I'm on stock rom/firmware & I for one am experiencing lag with the keyboard which results in me having to type slowly otherwise mistakes occur.
If I try to type fast the keyboard is slow & cannot keep up.
I've read others having the same problem as well as others not having this at all.
Having said this, I've tried 4 different keyboards and all gave me lag, none were any better or worse than each other...

Same problem. I have compared it with desire hd - desire hd keyboard is WAY FASTER than Note keyboard.
Tried different STOCK rom's KL7, KL8, tried different kernels (abyss, 2.5, 2.6),
nothing helps. It's just slow - letters is not appearing at the moment you press, it's like a 0.1sec lag or smth, but it feels, it's hard to type without mistakes when keyboard is not working at the realtime )
BTW I had this issue and on Nexus S...
Any solution to fix this?

Try switching haptic feedback off.... it mit help... or try thumb keyboard.. lots of customizations and no lag on it

Same issue, Im facing this since a month now.. Its become very irritating to use the phone itself.. I used Sgs2 for 5 months and did not face a single keyboard lag and a better hardware mobile is making it a big glitch.. I chat a lot on whatsapp and this issue is very irritating now! I have tried several stock n custom roms, but after say half an hour of continuous usage, this keeps happening.
I also noticed that this issue increases when the phone is on charge. The touch just does not wanna take any inputs.. Need a solution for this ASAP!!

I have just solved the lag issue! It may or may not work for you but it's certainly worth a try.
Try ''Perfect Keyboard''
For me this was the ONLY keyboard out of EVERY other popular keyboard app that was smooth and responsive. On top of this it's very customizable, give it a try!
Other keyboards I've tried which were laggy include:
- Stock Samsung Note Keyboard
- Ice Cream Sandwich Keyboard
- SwiftKey Tablet X Keyboard
- Better Keyboard
So to those who find most keyboard replacement apps laggy, try Perfect Keyboard!!

Thanks man.. Ill give it a try for sure.. This has become very frustrating now, so Im game to try any smallest of the solutions to resolve this issue!!

None of market keyboards does not fix this issue. Had some similar problems with Nexus S and it was solved by tuning thresholds and noise cancellations for touch screen controller (in kernel).
Let's hope ICS will solve that.

I know.. I tried perfect keyboard as well.. After same issue in this also.. After a bit this is also becoming laggy..
Another weird thing Im facing is that my touch sensitivity specially when on the keyboard isnt working at all when I start charging my phone..

I was about to post a thread on Q & A regarding this and saw this this thread. I too have the lag issue and few people above me has described it quite well.
Im on XXLA6 Deodexed Stock, and I too have the same issue. Samsung Keypad, and the Go Keyboard both are the same.
Any solutions ?

Only thing I have found till now it to Calibrate and then use the keyboard again.. Helps most of the times or else reboot thw handset. No solution yet..

Lol same thing happened to me too. My keyboard lag as hell. Tried swift, swipe, stock and better keyboard. All of them seems cannot keep up. I disabled heptic, tone and still lag.

[Q] Touchscreen issue

Hi everyone,
I was up to ICS Rom yesterday, but everytime i unlock screen, i cant touch in the bottom of the screen, cant typing with h, g, j and somewhere around it, but on the right, left or top screen i can still use normal. Does anyone know what happen and how to fix it?
When im in CM7 Rom is was fine and has no problem
PS: Sr for my bad english i really not good in grammar.
Same problem but different area
I have the same issue.
On Apex i had no issues but when i upgraded to SlimICS 3.2. The right side of the screen ocasionally becomes unresponsive.
That is, on any keyboard from approximately the 'i' to backspace horizontally, and from enter to the top of the screen.
This whole zone randomly decides not to work. the only fix is to turn the screen off and then turn the screen on again, or backing out of the application and reloading it. The application can be anything, chrome browser, swiftkey, messages, whatsapp.
Does anyone know what the issue could be?
I'm running slimics3.2 with semaphore ics 1.0
I'm also running slim 3.2 and had the same issue with the sephamore kernal. I just reflashec the essentials and everything worked perfectly for me.

I used the essentials kernel first and experienced the issue, i thought it was a kernel issue so I flashed semaphore afterwards. But I still have the issue...

I hate to say this, but its probably the fact the phone does not like ICS, it is more than likely some sort of hardware incompatibility issue.
I went through this exact same thing, it was on a 1009 or so build number captivate, no matter what flavor of ICS, none of them would work properly with the touchscreen hardware, there was always a spot of the screen, at the lower center 1/4 portion of the screen, that was unresponsive. Flashing a Froyo or Gingerbread rom, the touchscreen was perfect.
So.. I sold that Captivate, purchaced a refurb Captivate off Ebay, and touchscreen is perfect with ICS (CM9 is what I run).
Wish I had something more helpful, but that's my experience. Good luck with it.

[Q] Multitouch lag/issues? what could be the cause?

So I started noticing lag on games with a virtual pad. As in, jump works fine if im standing in game for example, but im running and I try to jump, either it doesnt do it at all, or it does it with some lag.
So I downloaded a multitouch tester and pretty much confirmed that there's an issue there.
If I just touch with one finger at a time, it works fine. If I press with two fingers and keep them there moving them around and whatnot, it also works fine.
BUT, if I keep pressing with one finger and use the other one to do a fast light tap, half of the time it doesnt register it.
Im using the ROM posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583871
wich im finding to be great, but I thought of originally posting my issue there since I gather it is more likely to be caused by software and not hardware.. right? considering simple touch works completely fine.
Any ideas?
Ace supports only 2 fingers at a time. But i did not find any types of lags while using 2 fingers. But it wont work if u use 3 or more fingers at once.
REPLY
Hey I got 100% same issue too. On original cm7 nightly.
But I found out sometimes it works and sometime it doesn't seems to work. I think it's similar to the rounding bug.
Maybe it's the kernel problem. Just don't overclock and it will work well. Or, reboot your phone and wait for a night without touching it, and the problem is gone. However, the bug will occur again after you install an app or launch an app. This multi-touch bug always occur on cm7. If you don't want this problem you can use stock roms. But if you say touch making it lags, it doesn't make our phone lags or the game you play using this phone is a bit slow. Just the second finger is responding slowly if the first finger is pressed/touched on the screen.
And I've tested this bug using the dev tools in the cm7 rom. dev tools/pointer location. All of the stock rom doesn't have this bug except cm7. CM7 will not have this problem on the first few weeks since the first boot. hope it helps
It's a Ace Hardware issue. Nothing to do about it.

Screen unresponsive

Hi everyone,
I bought a Samsung galaxy s last week from an eBay auction. The phone was described as touch screen lag. I was thinking that flashing a new firmware will solve the problem. I got really cheap though
The touch screen stops suddenly in every 5/6 minutes and I have to lock the screen using power key and unlock again to make it working.
when I got the phone:
Non Samsung battery and chargers were used, I changed and using original ones.
Stock XXJVS firmware in it.
First I flashed stock 2.2.1 froyo and test the screen using *#0*# code. it got pass. But when I start using it, the problem was still there.
Then I flashed stock GB, same story, now slim ics, same thing.
Please someone help me, there is nothing I can do with it now.
I search few threads related to screen problem but couldn't find one with similar problem. So asking here.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me..but it's really hard to say if it is. But it would definitely seem like it since it isn't ROM related. Maybe a water damage or faulty digitizer?

This happens to me sometimes very rarely though, it will be weird and hard to touch but speaking to someone with the same phone they said they had this problem to all I do to resolve the problem is lock and unlock the screen, I thought this was normal?

It shouldn't be normal. I am using another galaxy s for almost two years. But never had this problem in such extent, little bit lag on touchscreen when on froyo. But never after. Now with slim ics Temple run is more smooth then iphone 4.

Thanks for reply. When I got it first time, it was really annoying, the problem was so frequent that it was almost unusable. Now in new rom, after unlocking the screen it works little longer then before. Works like a charm when it works. So not sure this is hardware problem.
Sent from my Galaxy S using xda premium
I don't think this is a hardware or problem either, I broke the screen and replaced it and I still have the same thing when though it is very rare, so if it was the screen it should of gone after I installed the new one, btw I installed a whole new pre built front so the bevil and LCD, and my phone has never hib water damaged? Maybe its something to do with the bootloader? As that doesn't change through ROM flashes

try using a LCD modder LCD density modder https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birdapi.android.dpi&feature=search_result
@xsenman;
I did that couple of times going through Advance slim setting. That didn't change anything. Now I'll try this as well.
I change touchscreen into chainfire sensitive option in semaphore app. Still lagging.
Tried over clocking to 1200 but it freezes and automatically reboots into recovery mode. I can use only after changing to default

Guys its really annoying now. Its behaving strangely. I played with it few hours and found out that the screen near the home button freezes first. I cant press the dock but still pull the notification bar? then stops working whole screen. I checked the show touches in developers options setting. Sometimes it works randomly actually without touching it , I just place my finger near the screen but didn't touch and on few occasion it works opposite direction, like I scrolled down but it gone up:crying:
Is this the sensor issue? Is there any way to fix? Any idea please?

try this tool to verify where the problem is , if its hardware, you have no choice but to take it to a technician

I tried all of those apps, nothing wrong. I think I should change the screen and digitizer, I might need to go to the repair center because my hands shake (my usual problem) and hard to fix tiny things. I want to do few experiments before taking it to repair. I already put it in the freezer for two hours it was acting like crazy after.

Me too!
and i thought i'm the only one experiencing this kind of problem. it is exactly what i'm having on my sgs. seems to be temporarily fixed by turning the screen off and then on again, but after a while, the screen doesn't respond on the same spot as you're having.
i've managed a low level debug on screen touch response using adb logcat, and my touch doesn't really register any on adb logcat console.
they might be correct on the hardware problem, but when i'm on any gingerbread rom (2.3.6), the problem is gone.
guys, any idea what kind of drivers they're using on gingerbread for our touchscreen?
I have this too on ics, left half of screen stops responding, lock on/off sorts it....until the next time! Bugs the hell out of me!
Me too! on ICS
btw, i'm already on ics team nyx
change
flash CF KERNEL and put ICS CM9
middle screen not responding
- when in stock gb firmware (official from samsung), the touchscreen problem is gone.
- but i want the features of an ics rom, so i flashed one (first was slim ics); the problem appeared first; first guess was the custom rom was still in its early stages.
- flashed back to gb, no touchscreen problem.
- flashed new ics rom from cm9 (nightlies), problem appears again (ugh!).
- flashed backed to updated slim ics since this was the fastest and easiest to install, touchscreen problem still persist.
- found a temporary fix by turning the screen off then on again.
did a adb logcat full trace log of touchscreen input: what i noticed was the whole vertical middle part of the screen is not responding to touch; dragging touch from one side to middle is working just fine, but not starting from the mid vertical part.
the problem may sometimes go away after a while, and sometimes persist even after the temp fix. it's very intermittent indeed.
help please.

same problem here, left part of the screen would be unresponsive at times
can fix by locking the phone through power button and unlocking it, thats why i think its a software problem.
I dont remember having this problem in GB also.
maybe something is messed up during flash?
I have the same problem with ics and jb roms from the onecosmic ics times and i had a topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648287
I have written here but no one seems to now what it is, i have been using ics from onecosmics first release and had the problem from that moment on, different kernels, roms etc it is still here i have flashed gb again and problem is gone, flash again with ics the middle part still acts sometimes. ?...
We should request from kernel developers and rom developers to look into it. I have tried almost everything no luck so far

Anyone having problems connecting a bluetooth keyboard?

I have a logitech keyboard for Android 3.0+. I've been having problems with it in that when it connects or disconnects it refreshes the screen or browser. Every once and a while a key will get stuck (not the physical key but on the software side) and repeat itself without me being able to stop it.
Here is a video of the problem: Bluetooth Keyboard Issue
I decided to try it on my phone (also running JellyBean) and it does the same thing. Anyone know if this is a known JellyBean issue or could it possibly be the bluetooth keyboard? Anyone using the logitech bluetooth keyboard for android and not having problems?
I have Logitech blue tooth keyboard(the one with the touch pad) and it does do bad things when it connects to my N7. It knocked me out of a movie that was playing, for example.

I tried my bluetooth headset on both my phone with JB and the N7 and they didn't cause this problem. I'm wondering if it's just a problem with how JB handles bluetooth input devices or if it is a problem with the keyboard. I kind of wish more people had this problem so it'd be easier to figure out

I'd say its pretty much certainly a JB issue.
Don't forget theres only a few JB devices at the moment, when it becomes more mainstream I think issues like this will be sorted.

Aside from layout issues, I have found my HP Touchpad keyboard to work flawlessly with my N7. Only bit of strangeness I have found, other than layout weirdness (I have a German QWERTZ model) is if I accidentally lean on the lock key too many times, it causes a reset of the tablet (which is almost expected when you think about the repeat rate of a keyboard vs the click & hold nature of the power button on the tablet).
For the record:
Rooted w/ CWM
Standard kernel
Standard 4.1.1 ROM

Using the same keyboard here. It does refresh once when connected but doesn't appear to refresh when disconnected. When I first got it it would double the first capitalized letter of a sentence but I fixed that by turning off auto capitalization. Other than that I've had no other issue and am actually happy with it. Other than trying a new set of batteries the only thing I can think of in your situation is that you might've have gotten an older firmware or hardware revision. Just for comparison, under the battery cover my P/N is Y-R0021 and Duracell batteries that came with it are dated 2011/11 (use by MAR 2018).
Is the single refresh when connected really that big of an issue? Just trying to understand.

At least for the repeating keys, I'd have to agree that it's a JB issue. I have the same keyboard and I occasionally get the key repeat issue on my phone with CM10. My son has a Microsoft keyboard and gets the key repeat issue much more often, also with CM10 but on a different phone.

4.2 is apparently a whole new can of worms -- Google and Broadcom rewrote the Bluetooth stack from scratch for 4.2, supposedly to improve performance and device support.
Have the same keyboard, to connect make sure the keyboard is off then turn on tablets Bluetooth then the keyboard, sometimes when it disconnects, it crashes the app your in, but many. That's just me

Random touch/input lag

My biggest issue with this phone is that every now and then my phone becomes very unresponsive in relation to the user input, up to a point where trying to type becomes frustrating. Actually, you can only notice this behavior while typing. Only rebooting or putting the CPU's governor into performance mode seems to help.
It happened to me for almost half a year on PixelExperience rom + HEX Kernel. Motivated by the thread's responses, I decided to switch to Havoc and even left its default Kernel, just to try a completely different software.
To my surprise, the behavior is exactly the same, every now and then that lag appears and makes typing in the keyboard very hard.
Any ideas? Is this happening to any of you? Is there a way to automatically change the governor when the keyboard is launched?
This happens to me too.. just typing on the keyboard, I didn't mind it as it maybe an app issue (referring to Messenger) but when I am playing this game (Mobile Legends) were most of the time it won't respond to when tapping the skills buttons.
That made me thinking if it is an issue with the phone. I'm just hoping its just an app problem. Mine is stock and just recently put in the Poco launcher.
I didn't realize it could also impact gaming,as I my self don't play. I was about to ask if you could try setting your cpu governor to performance and check the response but I see that you are in stock rom.
I will probably try another rom soon, and the latest hex kernel. However, having installed the latest havoc after more than have year different, and seeing the same issue, I suspect the problem is way bigger.
My phone has exactly the same problem. It is intermittent and really frustrating ....
That's the mistake. Is it worth sending to a manufacturer's service? :-S
I have the same problem, right now I'm on stock rom but also had this problem in miui (converted to 6x), I think is a hardware problem.
I would like to know if everyone is having this problem or not. I feel like it should be a hardware problem but at the same time the fact that it is intermittent could be an indication that there something behind it that we don't know, and maybe could be fixed by software.
I think hat putting it on performance doesn't fix it completely when it happens.
Yes I have the same problem, i thought it could be fixed by changing rom but seems like it wont be fixed by doing that.

Interesting, reading on internet, it seems like it is an issue with the google keyboard and swipe to text feature, i have read that disabling it fixes the issue, will try to do so and report if something happens.

I don't use the google keyboard ever. I use swift key. Will try that anyway. But I see the lag also in the apps and launcher as well.
Well, issue is fixed, it was actually the gesture typing that was causing the issue.
Anyways, try disabling similar functionality on swift keyboard, or try using a lighter keyboard.
I recommend Google keyboard.

I don't think it is related to google keyboard as it also happens while playing games when keyboard is not shown, please continue to test with swipe typing disable and report back
I have same problem with Swiftkey keyboard so it is not google keyboard related, in games like trials frontier and asphalt 9 too
I am back, you are right, it is giving me problems, is not always, but it is there.
Hmm.
I would debug it if I knew how to recreate it, but unfortunately it is really hard to replicate because it happens randomly

Reading around I found that playing with the gpu settings in developer options might solve the issue.

I dont have the A2 but was experiencing the same issue on my Mi8. I resolved the issue ( the exact same issue that you guys are having ) by changing the kernel default setting to Schedutil, I had it set to to conservative.
This may or may not help you, but it's definitely worth checking. Also, this issue happened a couple of months ago on the Miui EU Developer rom, so it could be a bug with the OS as well.
Thanks for the advice but I'm fully stock so I can't change kernel governor
I have this issue too. Keyboard laggs when typing. Touchscreen not working. I rebooted many times but the problem still persists. Then i installed Touchscreen Repair from Playstore. It seems to fix the problem. I can't confirm how good the app is cause i've just install it 2hrs ago. You guys should give it a try. The name of the app is Touchscreen Repair. All the best!

sorry for ressurect an old topic, but i did some research and found some interesting stuff:
Aparently this is a problem that occurs commonly on white screen Xiaomi phones (mine is gold) because they use different hardware for the black and white versions.
After i read this some people posted that comparing their other Xiaomi phones like Redmi notes this problem also occurs and just on the white phones.
I still doesn't have a solution, it might be a shot to replace the screen for a black one but i couldn't find anybody who did this to know if it's going to work

Yes, that app seems to fix the problem for me. Thanks!
Well just came here to update on the touch issue i had on almost every ROM (stock included)
Whenever the touch issue happens, nowadays i just hit the touchscreen hard using a single fingertip (like a hammer) and it starts working really, really good! I mean so good that even restarting the phone didn't fix it to this level haha ?
Earlier i just locked-unlocked the screen but this didn't always work. Restarting worked but its not really feasible always.
This solution is soo damn good in my phone right now that I can use this phone for a year from now if my screen doesn't break from the hammering ? earlier was thinking to exchange it with realme x2 pro real soon.
