Thinking about unlocking... - Dell Streak 7

I got a Streak 7 for Christmas, and I really enjoy it... but I hate that only 2GB are allocated for apps. I bought a large SD card in anticipation of moving my apps there, only to find out that Honeycomb hates app to SD. Apparently, my only option is to flash it and install a different ROM.
I've never unlocked anything before in my life. My phone is an HTC Thunderbolt, and it sounds like one of the most complex and difficult phones on the market to flash. Basically, I'm scared to death of flashing something like this. I'm not asking for a tutorial, I'm basically just asking for a risk vs. reward analysis. How easy is it to flash a Streak? How much room for error is there, as in, if I make a mistake, can it be corrected without bricking the tablet? I'm not an Androidiot, I do know my way around the Android OS fairly well, and my computer knowledge is pretty basic; I suppose I know more than most of the basic users, but my knowledge of computers is not complex, and I don't know how to code or develop or anything like that.
So... Is it worth it for a n00b like me to try and unlock my Streak? And if so, considering that app to SD is the single most important feature in a new ROM, which one would you guys recommend? I was considering just flashing back to the Froyo, but if you have a better suggestion with cooler features in addition to app to SD, then tell me. Thank you!
-Tim

I bought my streak 7 yesterday and anything in the point of flashing, rooting and the result enjoying worked, quite fine.
Is your streak rooted?

No, I haven't rooted it yet. I know the tutorials are on the site and everything, so I'm not asking anybody how to do it, I just want to know which ROM to flash to, if it's dangerous, blah blah blah.

As long as I! can see, flashing a rom isnt dangerous. But remember look that you alway have enough power in akku .
If you need more help, give me a question and you get answer.

Will do, thank you, but I'm looking to hear input from a variety of Streak owners about their experiences and what their recommendations are. But thank you.

I'm rooted running honeycomb from tabletroms they have alot of info there xda is sorta dead for the streak check out r8 its a little tricky understanding what you have to do to flash but totally worth it

Tim do't get your panties all in a wad... your solution is VERY simple. But I would like to point out that any app to sd apps are becoming obsolete. Newer firmwares and operating systems don't like it because storage is no longer a problem. I have hundreds of apps on my Streak 7 and not even close to filling up that 2 gigs of space yet. BUT if you must have more then look for the HoneyStreak R2 thread. There you will find the NVFlash method of flashing Honeycomb to your Streak. Within the zip there are .bat configuration files that you will choose to flash your Streak, each is for a different partitioning of the inner SD, 2GB 4GB and 6GB.... the thread is ABSOLUTELY straightforward, the drivers for using NVFlash are in the zip, the phone will be rooted once the process is done and everything, it's almost a one click procedure. After you flash R2 then you can update to R8 which is based on the code released for the Dell Streak, although R8 is NOT rooted, there is a thread on how to root HOneycomb on the Streak also...
Good luck and don't forget to hit that thanks button

[Q] Any ideas how the new partitions will affect new Nook Color buyers?

Doing a lot of reading on the changes that B&N is doing to the partitions of the Nook Color. Wondering now how it will affect those of us who are about to buy them with the intent to root and use a new ROM.
Details on the changes in my post linked below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13962169&postcount=17
Considering most people probably buy the NC for an actual e-reader, it won't affect them, but for us at XDA, it may stop a few people who are lazy, or people it think it's too much trouble.
If rooted builds don't have access to the 7GB partition for non-B&N content, it will make rooting pretty worthless, but then rooting is already pretty worthless compared to CM7.
A CM7(or whatever ROM) install to eMMC can probably treat most of that 7GB as system space, which could be even more beneficial to CM7 than B&N, given the order of magnitude more apps available for CM7.
A CM7 install to SD is straight up losing 4GB of storage (as well as the flexibility of sharing that storage with whatever OS is on the eMMC), but is otherwise unaffected.
I suppose it could be seen as a sneaky way of making the non-B&N options look less appealing to new owners.
My guess is that this was done in an attempt to keep the ROM installs isolated to just the SD card.
That way B&N can claim that their device isn't being affected by rogue hackers!

Please clarify your statements! It is Impossible to install a Rom to the EMMC of a newly partitioned NC! Don't generalize all of us with new nooks into a catagory of Lazyness!
Also, 2 days ago you post this--Quote
I'll be honest. The NC confuses me slightly when it comes to how to root, flash ROMs, etc. compared to my Incredible, it feels like day and night.
I made a thread about a month ago about wanting to learn the process but since then it has changed greatly with the 1.2 update.
I would really like if someone could detail out to me the steps I need to root and have CM7 on the NC.
I have questions that are probably answered right in front of me but they get lost in the vast amount of posts.
•Since the eMMC is pretty much canceled out for the time being, I want to run CM7 off the SD card, I've already read a Sandisk Class 2 8 or 16GB is the right card for this, how the hell do I put CWM, CM7, etc on this one SD card or am I supposed to use 2-3 different cards for the process? Then what do I do from there?
•What is the most stable, but feature packed release of CM7 at this point in time, like what build, which kernel, etc.? Market and GAPPS working?
•Assuming the SD card is good, does running off the SD card impact performance or is it as slick as running off the internal?
Pretty much I'm starting from dead scratch when it comes to the NC and I feel the guide threads don't do enough justice to explain certain questions fully enough or at all?
If it helps at all, I just plan to download apps, internet browse, stream music from Mougg, little or no game playing, and overclock.
So someone please help me out? It's not like I know nothing, as I have a rooted and kept up to date phone but for some reason, the NC confuses me and I may be overthinking.
If I remember any more questions, I'll list them. Thanks.
Sounds like to me, you are a Bit Hypocritical!!!!

What did quoting me prove?
Nothing.
I said the new partitioned NCs may lead to people not wanting to root because those people may be scared of going through the trouble to try to learn how to do root stuff otherwise or people too lazy to work around it. Had nothing to do with generalizations, before you try and make me look foolish, stop doing it to yourself.
By no means am I an expert at the content on this website and I'm quite new to the NC scene but that doesn't make me stupid and doesn't give you the right to try and throw me under the bus for some e-cred.
Besides all of the reading, like how hard is it to root a NC really?
Step 1. Put file on SD Card
Step 2. Boot up
Step 3. Um...like thats it!
I've had a harder time opening the front door when I've had a few drinks
*Just to clarify...the above was an attempt to difuse the situation with brevity*
Carry on!
Richard
I thought I was keeping current on Nook Color issues (rooting, ROMs, etc) but this is the first I've heard about changed partitions and how it may effect rooting the device. I'm running CM7 stable on internal memory and love it. I've got a microSD that boots the Nook into clockwork recovery or whatever that's called, I wipe everything and then install CM7 and gapps from the SD card, reboot and I'm done. I've installed the same setup on Nooks for two friends who envied my tablet. A third is about to go buy a Nook so I can do the same. if the Nook she buys has these new partitions will this process NOT work?
If you guys get the new partition, give this a try. I've done it myself since I had the new partition.

Works perfectly
So I got my refurbed Nook today and it has the changes to the partitions (blue sticker on box). I tried to load CM7 via CWM on the SD card and it won't boot at all. Is this because of the changes to the partitions?

As far as I know, No, it will not be.
I don't understand why B&N is putting so much effort into this. Rooting doesn't violate any carrier agreements, since this is a wi-fi only device, and their store is still available for use after a root. If they're worried about book piracy, that can be done without root. Any insights?

B&N discourages rooting for many reasons, including the fact that they only paid Google specific licensing fees and now most of us are running the full OS.
There is also the fear that we will damage the device and return it, which will directly affect their bottom line.
Whether or not WE think rooting is good may have nothing to do with how B&N and its investors thinks this affects their image.
No matter what, rooting is an out of control rogue operation in the eyes of any company. That lack of control scares them.
Secretly they may be fine with us rooting, but they are under a business obligation to their partners to protect the original design specs.

Well for me, I would not have bought the Nook Color unless the root and full android install was an option.
I think there is probably a lot of people in the same boat that bought the device because it was primarily a nice way to get into a tablet with the added bonus it is a very good size for an e-reader.
Bottom line, there probably is a substantial increase in sales because of what people have done here making this a full android tablet.
It would be ill-advised for BN to impact this capability.

I don't know about that.
Remember although like 9/10 of the people here root and mod things, we're still a very small minority, most people probably actually did buy the NC for the e-reader, only as people keep word of mouth going do they figure out more about what they can do.

Absolutely right. There have been over 3 million sales of the Nook Color so far. We may be a very large community but we are a drop in the profit bucket, and most likely considered a risk in comparison.

I just got a new blue sticker nook color and am having some issues. I understand that the software for installing images hasn't been modified to reflect these partitions yet but does it make sense that running from sd shouldn't work? I've been following verygreen's guide and using the exact versions and links that he has there but it hangs on "Loading...". If I try to use the nightlies instead I can sometimes make it to the cyanogenmod animation but every one I've tried freezes either there or earlier. Has something changed with the blue sticker nooks that would make us expect either generic-sdcard-v1.2.1 or update-cm-7.1.0-RC0-encore-2.6.32-beta3.1 to no longer work properly? I thought that this might be relevant to post in verygreen's thread but I haven't made enough posts to do that yet.
Help Please
Ok, so I've had a rooted NC since February and have ran most everything at one point or another thanks to the good people at XDA. I currently have CM7 .32 on mine.
My buddy saw my system and decided he liked it and bought one. I ran clockwork mod and flashed CM7 .32 on his NC. There was no notification bar on his and the cyanogen settings were force closing. I think he may have had the partitions on his. I'm trying to create an SD card CM7 for him, but I would like to fix his emmc as well. The adb partition fixes are really above my head as I have never been able to get adb to work.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Want to buy a NC but have a question

Sorry if this question is asked. I would like to buy a new NC and run Honeycomb. All NC can do that, right? I mean, it's not like iphone that only certain ios can be jailbroken/unlocked? Thank you!!
As far as I know, yes..
Worst case you can run Honeycomb from the SD card but, if I am not mistaken Clockwork recovery works at least up to 1.1 so it should be able to be installed onto the device as well.
Not 100% sure about 1.2 (that is out right? I quit looking for B&N updates a while back.. )
.... aaaand then I read this.. LOL
****IF YOU RECENTLY GOT A NEW NOOK COLOR OR A REPLACEMENT FROM B+N THEY HAVE CHANGED THE PARTITIONS AVAILABLE ON THE DEVICE AND DUE TO THAT NO CUSTOM ROMS CAN BE FLASHED WITH THE CURRENT RECOVERIES. IF YOU HAVE A BLUE STICKER ON THE BOX YOUR DEVICE IS AFFECTED. STICK TO STOCK/ROOTED STOCK FOR NOW. THE ISSUE IS BEING WORKED ON AND I WILL UPDATE ONCE YOU CAN FLASH AGAIN****
From this thread..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
So perhaps no on the install but, running from an SD card may still be possible..
Thank you!!
There are ways to repartition the storage to what it was before hand, but it's more difficult than the normal simple root, flash, etc. Look around for the threads.
that's what happened to me. returned my refurb NC and got a new one. never read the thread that was posted above. had spent 3 days trying to figure out how to fix it after I brutally screwed it up.
After you repartition it, however, works good as gravy!

[Q] Interested in getting a N1 - Speed and firmware question

Hi,
I'm interested in getting in Nexus One!
Not sure if I'll do for now, but it looks to fill my needs perfectly (Well, doesn't have a lot of internal memory, but still more than my Optimus One)!
The price looks fine, actually. The new phones are way too expensive, for me. Allright, questions before I purchase or so:
---
The speed: it seems the Nexus One is blazing fast with his 1 GHz processor, but at which point? My LG Optimus One (Okay, that's 600 MHz, normal) does lag quite often, and I have a lot of APPs installed (I use them all. Kept the more useful only). Will I experience slowdowns like this on the Nexus One, especially if I plan to install Cyanogenmod 7 ?
---
Next question, it's about his "unlocked" statut; I've been searching about this, but I can't find the exact answer of my question.. It does allow you to use any SIM card from any operator in it, but does that also mean I could use my Nexus One not to call? Basically, use it without calling, so that I wouldn't pay for this service?
---
Last questions are about Cyanogenmod and the stock firmware. Does all the Nexus One come with Android 2.2 installed, or others still have Android 2.1 ? I would like to install Cyanogenmod 7, and upgrade to Android 2.3.6 (I like the interface, for some reason, with the black notification bar. That sound dead-easy to install), but can I install both ? What should I do first, upgrade from 2.2 (or 2.1?) to 2.3.6 then install Cyanogenmod, or the reverse? Will that work?
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.
Q1. Imo the n1 is still quite snappy in comparison to the latest phones. Cm7 runs very well so do the miui based Roms. No need to worry about internal memory with a2sd. Some apps experience a little lag when cache is on sd, but think that is more dependant on sd card class. Still the best phone in its 2nd hand price range I reckon.

You don't need a sim card for the phone to function, if that's what you're asking.

You can install any PASSIMG you want, though some people have problems downgrading, but you can search for the version older fixes.
Just unlock it, install a custom recovery, then you can flash whatever rooted rom you wish.

If I don't use a SIM Card, are they setting and APPs (Contacts?) other than calling that will be disabled ?
Right now, my LG Optimus One smartphone is on a Koodo contract; so let's suppose I put my Optimus One SIM card in my Nexus, I'll stay with the same contract, and I'll still pay the same way I do normally?
In other words, a SIM card isn't required, but if I decide to use my Nexus to call, I can simply put my Koodo SIM card in my Nexus, and nothing should change, right (Except that I'm now using my Nexus to call, rather than my LG!) ?

Let's put this way. If you turn on the flight mode, all your apps in N1 will still work. You can also make call too even without a sim card or in flight mode if you have wifi and Voip app running.
I don't see why you need to pay more or less if you just simply plug in your sim card and use the N1.
Rooting and installing custom rom are not that difficult. All you need to read more XDA threads. For rooting, you can use some app to do it for you. All you need is just "one click". That's done. Then you can install rom manager to install custom recovery and roms. Good luck.

I've read the whole thread, and people recommend to get an HTC Sensation or HTC Amaze; the problem, is that I'm in Quebec, and I'm trying to find used phones, for some models, it can be a challenge.
Actually, the minimum price of the HTC Sensation I found was 300$, while the HTC Amaze, 360$.
When I checked the SPECs of differents phones, the availibility in Quebec, and the price range, there are however 3 phones that caught my eye (No need for me to get the newest phone with Android 4.0 and a lot of new features for the price of 400$):
- HTC Incredible S ;
- HTC Desire ;
- HTC Nexus One ;
I've been looking for others phones, such as Motorolla Droid Pro, but many aren't availible here.
Considering that I spent like 175$ on a Creative ZEN Touch 2, I feel like paying about the same deal for a Nexus One wouldn't be a bad deal; what I like about it, it's his automatic unlocked statut.
If I still won't be happy with a Nexus One, what would you recommend, 200$ being the maximum price for me?
Now that google had announced officially that there wont be any future updates(ICS) for N1. U may need to pause n think a bit if u r specific abt OTA update. But the great techno devs are already doing an amazing work to bring ICS to n1. So that should not be much of an issue.
If u asking abt hardware specs, n1 is better or atleast equivalent to any mid range droids out there in the market. I bought mine 2 months back for 250$. I am happy n lovin it.
So ur $200 deal seems to be good

In that price range, as I wrote multiple times, HTC MyTouch 4G is so far superior to Nexus One, while being priced in the same range, that I wouldn't even think about considering N1. I have one, and I had N1 before it. No comparison whatsoever between the two.
The only warnings that should be put here:
1) MT4G has 2 types of screen, "good" one being much better than "bad" one. Good one is better than N1's AMOLED for me, "bad" one has color distortion when viewed from angle. Look for the good one.
2) MT4G has 2 types of ROM chip (eMMC), "good" and "bad" one. There was much hype on the forum, considering the "bad" one a "ticking bomb", advising not to root. I hope this hype is long over, and this "issue" is non-issue.
3) MT4G is not as easy to root as other phones. No 1-click-root is available for this phone on the latest OS, rooting requires downgrading it. Not a complicated procedure, and multiple guides exist.

I don't know why you are worried about the installation of something on your phone will have a detrimental effect on your phone though. You really only need to use the computer to root the phone and back up your sd card (just in case you erase it accidentally).
If you are running the stock Rom that came with the phone, then you will see a much superior device by installing one of the many GB Roms out there along with other tweaks that will make you actually enjoy having a Hero. Even Froyo would be an upgrade compared to Eclair or Donut; at least it was, and is, for me.

He probably wants gingerbread as it is more stable than ICS on the hero.
I'm using all the original things, I'm kinda a noob at screwing with my phone...
Also, I wanted to know, what old features becomes disabled. I was watching a video on youtube about what the improvements were and he said he couldn't use his trackball.
P.S My friend said he used a program higher than gingerbread he said it screwed up his phone. But if there is something more stable than gingerbread I'm open for suggestions.

Crack a few brews...read the forums and listen to the Senior Members/Devs.....
Just about anything you install on here is better that what came stock. They are doing things on the Hero that HTC and Sprint said were not possible!!
Oh...and burn this word into your head...NANDROID!
Welcome to a whole new world of Android! Its almost like being in Willie Wonkas factory

[Q] Yet another Bricked Nexus one

I have done it this time, I tried flashing a custom rom (Cynogen 10.1) and Ended up bricking it, I can get it into CWM but when I try to select anything the screen goes blank with just the image of the rom manager that is in the background and does nothing. It corrupted my SD card so recovery is not an option and Fastboot doesnt really work either. Kies doesnt recognize it neither does ODIN. I have tried just about every way to fix it that I have found and all it does is piss me off. CMD in windows does nothing. Anyone have any suggestions? Or can I just run it over with my car, I am totally sick of nexus, and the sidekick sucks just as much. So what are my options?
How about selecting with a different button? Like trackball instead of power, for example?
Nexus is super-easy to deal with and it's very hard to brick one. However, I suggest you read more to get the idea how to work with it. Fastboot is always an option, if you unlock the phone (and there is no reason to keep it locked).

Holy mother of god you make me feel like such a tard lol.... I don't really know why I didn't think of the trackball. I actually like the Nexus I was just incredibly pissed at it. But I used to track ball to flash the stock rom onto it, Now time to re-root it this time with the boot loader unlocked, and try once again. So erm it works again..... Thanks for the option that was just about the easiest one there is. Definitively going to read up on this phone. I need to for my own sanity and the knowledge of how to do things the easy way lol.
I seriously spent the last 4 hours googling and reading how to fix it and nothing worked.... Then you provided a fix that I should have caught after reading so many pages on google about it :/
You know Kies and Odin are for Samsung phones, right?
I should just stop before I get to far ahead of myself. But the posts I read about fixing this thing. A lot of them said something about using Odin. I can't figure out how to flash roms or anything on this phone. All I have accomplished is unlocking it and rooting it.
Otherwise I just don't understand hboot, blackrose, the s-off thing and or why or how I have to partition anything to install a damned custom rom. I have never had this much of a problem with any other phone than the nexus. Can't get cwm to stick and am considering buying 4ext since there is no free version I don't really have a choice. There used to be a free version but not anymore apparently.
But I have tried to flash a 250mb hboot. Which didn't work, tried to flash cm10.1 which also didn't work. I can't figure it out. I had a friend with a note that wasn't this much of a hassle either. So I am just about ready to give up. I am waiting for the iPhone to come out on T-Mobile late march and I think I'm just going to ditch android. Mainly cause it now is starting to cost money to customize these Androids cause cwm sucks and everything else you have to pay for it seems. Or stay current with the new nexus 7 or whatever. Then when you have a newer phone there is absolutely no point to rooting or flashing roms on it because the only reason for it in the first place is to increase proformance and or upgrade from the crappiest OS's like gingerbread and froyo to jellybean or ICS.
Its whatever I guess. Just too phone illiterate to be able to cope with new technologies I guess.
Hell even pulling a galaxy noteII out of a hard brick is easier than rooting and customizing these phones.

@kitsuKun, A lot of members here enjoy tinkering with their phone, including me to get the latest version of the Android OS on an old phone. It's not that we can't afford a new phone. So if you have questions, feel free to ask and don't whine

I am not trying to whine. All I am saying is I don't get the HTC. Can't figure it out. If I have questions I will ask but right now I dont, I have understood what I have read.
