[Q] Galaxy Note network speed issue with Rogers - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my Galaxy Note in Korea and brought to Canada to use it here...
My provider is Rogers and successfully connected to its network but the speed is very very slow (40KB/S [down/up] it is even slower than 56K dial-up modem).
apn is correctly setup as:
Name: Rogers Internet
APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn
MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS proxy: 10.128.1.169
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: internet + mms
otherwise, any other fields are showing as <not set> OR None
Name: Rogers Tethering
APN: isp.apn
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: dun
otherwise, any other fields are showing as <not set> OR None
ALSO THERE IS THE SIMILAR THREAD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10447140&postcount=1524
BUT DIDN'T HELP AT ALL.. (I have tried most combination but didn't work)
It takes 1-3 minutes to load one website.....
If anyone knows how to fix this I will call you god!!

I'm not entirely sure whether or not Rogers supports fast dormancy on their network, but it's a feature which is enabled on the Note by default. Down here in the states, people have been seeing significant network performance improvements by disabling this feature, as AT&T does not support it anyway.
You can disable fast dormancy by entering *#*#9900#*#* from your dialer and make sure the fast dormancy option is set to "Disabled"
Let me know if that works!
P.S. What type of connection are you picking up when you're getting those speeds btw? EDGE (E), UMTS (3G), HSPA+ (H, or H+)?

Thanks Jade but when I punched in *#*#9900#*#* it didn't do anything.. later I found that it is *#9900# for Galaxy note..
Once I got into this Sysdump menu I couldn't see fast dormancy option.. please see the screen shot.
I don't know where this fast dormancy menu is hidden for Galaxy note...
And you may also find from the screen shot it says "G" for the data signal..

Your sysdump seems weird... *#*#9900#*#* has worked for everyone else here that I've recommended about the fast dormancy issue.
The other thing is that the "G" in your signal indicates that you're only connecting at GPRS speed, which is in fact slower than dial-up. Perhaps there's a different APN for 3G/HSPA?
Another thought just came to mind as well... You said you got your Note from Korea right? Is there a Qualcomm sticker anywhere on your device? From what I understand, the Note available in Korea is a totally different device from a hardware perspective. It uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset instead of Samsung's own Exynos for the LTE functionality. It may even be possible that the Korean version doesn't even support 3G frequencies outside what's used over there... That being the case, ouch dude, that sucks...
I've included a pic from my device for what the menu should look like after inputting *#*#9900#*#*
P.S. Just realized that you made no mention of Korea, so I have no idea where that came from lol!

He says in the first line of his post that he bought it in Korea. I think you may be right - the Korean version is the LTE/Snapdragon version. It may not be quad-band UMTS/HSPA capable.
This story seems to imply that the Korean version does not have all international 3G bands:
http://asia.cnet.com/blogs/lte-samsung-galaxy-note-isnt-welcome-in-korea-62212571.htm
Edit: reading the story again, it seems to say that 3G is locked out in the firmware on the Korean Note.

I just purchased one in London and the fast dormancy is disabled by default; will be using on ROGERS at YVR before I move to Calgary on the 2nd January. I will post if I get the "normal" speeds.
Update: works great on ROGERS

Is'nt the 10.128.1."69" not "169"?

Thank you all for the kind responses
I have found what the problem is... Korean Galaxy note supports WCDMA, GSM, and LTE
Unfortunately there is no WCDMA carrier in Canada so I had to go with Rogers.
Korean Galaxy note does supports GSM but preset to use only 900Mhz, 1800Mhz, and 1900Mhz. Rogers uses 850Mhz (for 3G) and 1900Mhz (for 2G)... Since my Note does not have 850Mhz option it automatically uses 1900Mhz which is 2G frequency this was why I can only have 40kbps speed for the data..
I could go with LTE but Rogers uses 700Mhz frequency and my device is set to 1800Mhz for LTE (because Korean carrier uses 1800Mhz for LTE)
My only hope is to find out how to change (if there is any way) this frequency setting softwarecally(not even a word but hope you understand what I mean) say... 900Mhz to 850Mhz without any hardware change
Does anyone know how to do that??

Suggestion: Get rid of the Korean/LTE Note. Buy the international/HSPA+ Note instead. Enjoy!
Sorry if that seems curt, but honestly, the problem you are trying to fix here with the LTE Note is more trouble than it's worth, especially when the problem is already solved in the other version of the device. No offence, but you really ought to buy equipment which is most compatible for the area(s) you plan to spend most of your time. So, if you spend the majority of your time in Korea, then I guess stick with what you've got, and just use WiFi (when you can) while in Canada. However, if you just picked up this device while you were visiting Korea or something, and Canada is your home country, then yeah, I'd get rid of that Korean LTE version quicker than a hot potato. Plus the international Note should work just fine back in Korea anyway, albeit minus LTE, but who cares? As far as I know, there's no unlimited data for LTE in Korea anyway, so what's the point in having all that extra speed when all it really means is that you're only going to crash into a wall that much faster?
Good luck!

no wcdma carrier in Canada?
I thought those new mobile companies used wcdma. Wind mobile and mobilicity - they should be able to work with the korean note, shouldn't they?
does the korean note have wcdma in 1700 and 2100 bands? that's what Wind uses.

[Q] Nexus One APN for STC (Saudi Telekom)

hi everyone
so im in riyadh for 3 months and i brought my Nexus One with me. most everything is working fine with my prepaid STC sim card, however I am not able to access the internet. the people at STC are clueless in why its not working and they don't even know what APNs are, lol. but the problem is obviously the APNs
Does anyone have the correct APNs for Nexus One on STC (Saudi Telecom Company)? I really don't want to buy another phone here, everything here is quite expensive!!! a nexus one is 2300 rials or ~620 USD!!!! any help will be greatly appreciated
Hi welcome to Riyadh
STC's APN is: jawalnet.com.sa
proxy is : proxy.jawalnet.com.sa
Port: 8080
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
thank you
thanks siddiqui, the internet now works however it goes off and on and i only get GPRS speeds. is it possible to get 3G service working? is there a different apn in order to get that? thanks in advance
Should be an APN setting issue, Are you sure you have the correct version of the N1 for your network?
p.s. this should be in the Q&A forum
i hope so, i bought the nexus one the second day it was introduced from google. at that time it was only available with the 1700 & 2100mhz (tmobile) 3g frequencies, which i assume is the international standard? i know a second version was introduced to worked with the 850 & 1900mhz (at&t)...so what am i doing wrong??
No I have the same version n I'm also getting some problems in the 3g network, its not your device's fault actually the STC's 3g network coverage is bad
There is only one APN for stc.
Why don't u try the other service provider MOBILY its much better than STC
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
i'd love to switch to mobily but when i went to mobily and asked their representatives whether its possible to transfer my number to them, they said its "too difficult and that i have to get a new number." which i find very strange considering its advertised on their website!!
raqme plan:

unfortunately, its really important i keep this number. any other suggestions?

I thought the AT&T 850 & 1900 was stardard for international. The T-Mobile version bands was their own.
@futango is it? i don't know. because tmobile is a subsidiary of deutsche telekom which is present in a number of european countries, most of which do not support at&t 3g bands, but this is just an assumption because there are many 3g band frequencies out there
N1 in Riyadh
Please tell me where i can buy a nexxus one here in Riyadh
Thanks
/cj
its right across the street from the sahara mall (take imam abdulaziz rd), in the electronics district next to the ministry of communications. you can't miss it but be prepared to pay at least 2300+ SR
Guys I'm having a strange problem in my nexus one. I have a T-Mobile n1 with un rooted froyo 2.2
I have 3g network from STC and I'm getting internet in all my application except by browse, I can't brows any sites when connected to 3g or even 2g or edge, but I can check my gmail, gtalk, Facebook and all other sw.
What could be the problem? ?

[Q] Unlocked galaxy note on Cincinnati Bell apn issues

Hi all, I am having trouble getting my unlocked note that I bought from amazon working on my Cincinnati bell network. I have voice but after searching the internet I tried a few different apn settings but can only seem to get the 2g edge network and not 3g let alone 4g. Any help would be greatly appreciated
i believe 2g is all you will get. cincinnati bell runs 1700/2100 3/4g and your note uses 850/1900. same problem as tmobile usa except the few western states using the 1900 for 3/4g.....
Jesus, how can a country that influent be so totally retarded when it comes to getting a mobile phone to work across the entire country? There's like a million standards and not even the same within a single operator. Get with the times - heard about GSM/WCDMA you know that the rest of the entire would uses?
Sent from my superior GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Thanks, I heard T-Mobile runs the same network as Cincinnati Bell, would their galaxy s II work then?
tmous branded "should" work.. uses the same freq...
You can get more than 2G. CB has their own 3G network but you have to go to the store and upgrade your SIM card

That does not seem to be the point here... The point is that it seems Cincinnati Bell uses frequencies that are NOT compatible with the N7000 being the 1700/2100 band as opposed to the 850/1900 band that the N7000 uses.

Only getting edge speed on T mobile (1900 mhz network area)

I'm only getting EDGE connection /speeds from t-mobile. However according to a press release a couple months back, my area was supported (goleta/Santa Barbara area) for HSPA+). How can I enable this network or why am I only getting edge? I am using a Criskelo rom.
Correct me if I am wrong but international note can ONLY be used at edge with US T-Mobile. The note doesn't have the radios for the Baseband of T-Mobile frequencies. As I have read in the forums in the past only at at&t can connect the note for 3g, not 100% sure for the last.

if you are on GSM network .. switch to WCDMA only network in your network settings
3G/4G of T-Mobile USA uses a relatively rare frequency 1700/2100 UMTS Band IV (aka AWS). The Note can't support it. You choice is either stick at the EDGE speed or switch to AT&T(or its MVNO).
TMOUS is starting to refarm their 3G/4G frequency to which the Note will support. But I think it might takes years to get the work done.

tmous is rolling out 1900 frequencies so it will be able to get 3g and possibly 4g depending on where you are... currently there are members on here from the northwest that have confirmed this working...
as for the question at hand i would contact tmo and ask if the towers are running and where in your area to make sure... the auto gsm/wcdma mode should work fine because if you leave the area where there is 1900 and are on wcdma only you will get no svc...
Well here's the press release: newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/new-4g-markets-nov2011
Hmm...I'm a total noob at this stuff and guess I was assuming I was gonna get HSPA+ due to it listing 1900 mhz in Santa Barbara on the Wirelessadvisor website in a zipcode search.
Am I wrong to assume that if the network is 1900 mhz band? Changing the gsm/wcdma didn't do anything. Guess I should contact t-mobile to make sure?

[Q] Galaxy Note in Japan - what version?

I want to buy a Galaxy Note (probably from eBay) to use in Japan and I was originally planning on buying the N7000 (no LTE, 1.4ghz) because it's known as the 'international' version.
However, I just read that the Galaxy Note that was released in Japan (with the carrier NTT DoCoMo) has different specs from the N7000 (LTE, Snapdragon S3 APQ8060 1.5ghz dual core).
If I buy an unlocked N7000 from eBay, will it work with a Japanese carrier?
bump

Yes the N7000 will technically work on DOCOMO and softbank
as they both run UMTS Band I Network
I have a GT-7000 and I am on the b-mobile network (which technically piggybacks off of Docomo) and it works fine.
thanks for the help!
Make sure you check with Docomo or soft bank first before you try this. They're Japanese companies after all which typically means their way or the highway. They may want you to buy a phone from them and if you don't you might not be able to get the typical discounted service plans if they let you have a SIM card at all. Docomo actually sells the note and you can probably get it for free* if you go to a keitai seller.
*free by paying for the phone and getting a discounted rate every month for 24 months.
I just got the bmobile free data sim and I can't get the data to work with my N7000. I've tried changing the carrier from Unspecified to LTE and changing the network mode to GSM/WCDMA to WCDMA only. Here are my settings:
APN: bmobile.ne.jp
user: [email protected]
password: bmobile
Authentication: PAP or CHAP
Did I miss anything? There's no "3G" or "H+" displayed, but I have a good signal. Voice calls work fine too.

GPS working?/Features disabled?

Hello,
I plan on buying an GSM unlocked s6 active on ebay, as it's not available in my country. (Europe, Austria)
Will the GPS performance suffer if I buy it from the US & use it in Austria? GPS is the most important thing for me. (Ingress)
Also, can someone tell me if there are any missing features if not used with an at&t sim card? I've read that call forwarding is disabled then.
Thanks in advance.
Hello.
I use gps with Navigon and it works ok.
I would not know about any missing features (dont use call forwarding).
The only thing you have to watch out for is the frequencies your carrier uses, because active does not support 900MHz band for UMTS, and 700 (band 17) on LTE. So in my case i have full 4g internet most of the time, but when the signal drops i have E. there is nothing in between, no 3g. But there are free wifi almost everywere, so i dont care much. Im from Slovenia and use it on SiMobil. But if i use roaming and connect to Telekom (witch doesnt use 900Mhz band and has far better signal), i have 4g everywere.
I like the phone wery much. Had a bit trouble finding some good screen protection.
Hope this helps

So there is no 3g at all and only lte for ALL european carriers or is it just in your case (in slovenia)?
Thank your for your reply you helped me further
EDIT: Can you please tell me, which sim card size the active is using?

The phone uses nano-sim.
I am saying it depends on the carrier. My carrier, Simobil, uses 900MHz band for 3g and the phone doesnt support it, so i get only 4g and edge. But some other carriers, like Telekom, dont use 900MHz band for 3g and i get all speeds of internet connection. You should check witch bands your carrier uses.
