Hey guys, I'm attempting to root my HTC Vivid and things aren't going as well as I hoped. I'm new to Android, this is my first Android phone, and I'm still trying to learn a bit.
I have been following the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836
So far I have unlocked my bootloader via HTCdev.com and now I'm working on flashing CWM following the guide above. I booted into H-Boot and plugged the phone into my computer and typed "fastboot devices" and it displayed my phone in command prompt. Then, following the instructions, I typed "Fastboot flash recovery root_recovery.img" and this is what command prompt printed out:
sending 'recovery' (4448 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.998s]
writing 'recovery'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
finished. total time: 1.763s
I'm trying to figure out why it FAILED, and I've been looking around but I just can't seem to figure it out. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your help!
Never seen this before. Are you sure the unlock worked correctly? Does it say unlocked at the top of the screen when you go into hboot?

Yea... what the other guys said. You must not be actually unlocked via HTC Dev because it's failing at the part when it's checking with the bootloader. Go into bootloader and tell us if it says unlocked. (Turn off phone, once off, hold down power and vol down button)
Good call guys, it says *** RELOCKED *** at the top. Now the question is... why? I'll attempt to unlock it again and let you know how it turns out.
Alright, I tried it again and that did the trick. I'm now permanently rooted! This is so exciting! Thanks again guys.
So unfortunately I'm having a bit more trouble. I got my phone rooted and tried installing the Holicakes kernel, and now my phone is stuck on the white HTC screen. I can boot into recovery, just not into the ROM. What should I do? I've tried doing a factory reset and stuff but it's still doing the same thing.
been there...

I Just went thru something similar this morning with my Vivid, I did the following to get it back:
1. Get the Cingular RUU if you don't already have it (I got it here, the server was down in the main RUU thread for this ruu file) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416956
2. Had to relock bootloader to get past the verification error (if you have your unlock.bin you just reuse the same file to re-unlock)
3. Boot your phone to bootloader then select fastboot. (you will likely have to pull the battery to get this step done)
4. Connect your phone & run the RUU and you should be good.
5. (optional) Re-unlock & root.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Did you flash the kernel but not the rom? If you are going to flash the kernel, you must flash the rom right after, without even leaving recovery. Try again and see if it works.

No problem. Try out rumrunner if you'd like. It's got the newest sense 3.5 which is different from our stock Rom.

you should see the other forums i am in.
even the captivate that has been out since July 2010 still has people come in and make new posts asking how to root. and samsungs are among the easiest damn phones EVER to root....not to mention the GOBS of information out there on it.
the vivid doesnt have much. slapshot has been helpful with the guide and keeping it up to date.

Yea that guide was really helpful. I had a fair bit of trouble trying to get root and everything, but now that I have, I've at least learned something about how this all works. It's addicting Can't wait for more ROMs to start coming out.

What gave you the most trouble would you say? I'm trying to get feedback from the successful people so I can add more details where needed, but as soon as they get root they just ditch lol.
The trouble I was having had nothing to do with the guide, just my ignorance on the topic. I had no clue what I was doing. I screwed up a few times by accidentally re-locking the bootloader without noticing it, which obviously caused some problems. And then flashing a kernel confused me a bit. I was trying to install Holicakes ROM and I didn't realize that you wouldn't be able to boot after installing the kernel, and that you had to install the ROM on top of it as well.

Gotcha, thanks for the info. Glad you got it all figured out. The kernel installing is being worked on. PG is testing out a new app.
Forgive me for posting here, I'm still noob and cant post in development forum. Just wanted to put out there, I flashed the RumRaider beta10. Had no issues flashing and booting, was pretty smooth with the provided instructions. Wifi working, had to manually set the AT&T pta, so far havent noticed any issues with mobile data ot MMS. This is a very fast ROM, ran Quadrant with a result of 2969, sorry I don't know how to do a screenshot yet. Very nice work so far

I guess I too a bit too much risk when messing with my phone. I flashed to the custom kernel posted here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1359656&highlight=htc+logo), now it's stuck at the HTC white screen. If I send my phone back to HTC, will they be able to flash it back? Are there any other way to flash this (I'm guessing not without a hardware flasher or some kind). Thanks in advance.
Did you flash the Rom that goes with it? I'm kinda new so I could be wrong but I'm pretty certain that the kernel goes with the holicakes rom. I had a similar thing happen when I first flashed a different kernel and couldn't get into recovery to flash the rom. But once the rom was flashed it was all good.
I'm not sure what rom it flashed, it just says boot.img Someone on that thread said that kernel 1206 works, but I can't find that anywhere. If anyone has that kernel, please PM me. Thanks for the reply.
Is there a way to download the stock kernel (not sure the terms here, but I'm thinking PS3 equivalent of firmware) and flash it to the phone. ON a PS3 this is done with the recovery menu, but I tried the CWM Recovery, it installed PH39IMG.zip from the SD card, however I'm still stuck at the HTC logo white screen. The CWM Recovery calls the internal storage internal SD card, is that where all the kernel information are stored? Is it possible to take that card out and load it with the factory default data? Thanks.

I did read the super guide, but it's useless to me at this point. The only thing on that guide that I can do is updating the PH39IMG.zip, which didn't help at all. I also tried flashing the kernel back to stock using the HTC Vivid AIO kit, it still won't boot.
This is the message I get after I ran the HTC Vivid AIO Kit So it seems like the replacement is sucessful, I should be back to stock, but I don't understand why I'm still stuck at the HTC logo screen. Is there a per-phone key that I need to patch into the kernel before using them? A lot of consoles have this kind of protection.

I tried the PH39IMG.zip thing, it didn't work.
Anyways, from the oc kernel thread, someone mentioned flashing to kernel 1206 fixed his phone. If anyone have this kernel, please post it or PM me. Thanks.
You need to listen to pirateghost and read the second post in the superguide and follow those instructions. Just start over and make sure you have all your needed items before flashing a new rom.
Just put the device in fastboot (hold volume down while powering up).
Lock the bootloader and than you flash stock using any method (exe or zip)
This is what the 2nd post would suggest

Glad you got your phone working again. But this is why I just leave mine alone and use it as is, imperfections and all. When the Vivid became available for unlocking and rooting, I posted a comment wondering how many "bricked phones" messages we would see.
-- "Nothing is ever as simple as it seems." - anonymous
I like to tinker with things, even when the phone was bricked, I was still searching for ways to unbrick it by either hardware flasher or maybe taking out the internal SD memory (still don't know if that's possible). I have been overclocking computer for a good while now, even doing physical voltmods. I will still tinker with the overclocking, but maybe after I find out if the internal SD memory is removable or not. If that's removable, then no matter how bad I mess it up, I should be able to take it out and restore it with a card reader, just like taking a hard drive out of a laptop to reformat.

its soldered on the mainboard...dont think you are getting it out.
good news is that you almost cant brick it. as long as you never lose access to HBOOT, you can always fastboot flash and PH39IMG.zip it....
..
If the internal memory is not removable then I'm going to wait a bit before messing with it. Wait for a more stable kernel before I attempt this again.

But back to the original poster, I am completely new to this, not a tech guy since I thought jailbreaking my iPhone was hard... dude. hes got a ROM called Holicakes too....its in the SAME section where you found the kernel..
if you dont understand what you are doing, you really shouldnt be touching your phone.
roms dont come in the form of PH39IMG files.
you might want to read the superguide again and make sure you understand whats going on. if you dont, then you should just remain stock.
Hello all...Since I can't post in the dev section I hope to obtain some help here...
I'm already rooted on stock rom. I'm trying to go back to stock with a newer RUU (from 3.26.502.54 to 3.26.502.56 ) and re-root. I'm doing this because of an issue with Skype (green video). I've read that going to a newer software version could fix my hulk problem.
So, following this thread, I have two problems.
First, when re-locking the bootloader, I get this:
C:\Android>fastboot oem lock
... INFOLock successfully...
FAILED (status read failed (Too many links))
finished. total time: 0.016s
Click to collapse
I don't know if this is bad or not....After doing this the bootloader does show that it has been relocked. So I continued on.
Next problem, when running the RUU exe, I come to an error "155" (screenshot).
I read somewhere that the error 155 could be due to HTC Sync, so I uninstalled it and retried, no success. Not sure where to go from here...
Witch ruu file you using ?
I got it from HTC's website (htc.com/us/support/htc-vivid-att/software-updates#). Did the manual download.
I was going to try the RUU linked on the other thread from filefactory, but I couldn't bear the stupidly slow download speed.
I thought that the gpu driver update fixed the issue with the green video. Take a look in the dev section and see if that helps

Why are you guys being rude to him ?
Its probably the best bet the AHD currently has.
If its not a virus, you only need a root preserver or/and an 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 ota patch and you are set.
If there is a ota update, you have to search moto's servers for it...
This is an app you can do the search with... its the same way many moto phones got their ics leaks.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840826
I've pulled the boot.img and the bootloader from my phone. I ran the following commands through emulator.
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p31 of=/sdcard/boot.img
exit
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/sdcard/aboot.mbn
exit
Lets see if anything comes out of this.
So, now that we have a rooted boot.img, what do we do with it?

Nothing. His phone is a dev phone and as such the partitions weren't signed. I don't think anything aerohp has can be useful and won't help to get a bounty either :/
EDIT: You can see here that the bootloader is not signed for example on the very bottom of this diffcheck. left is stock bootloader right is unlocked engineering bootloader.

That is the signature checker telling you it is not signed.

Don't feel too bad, you didn't know. But it was nice while it lasted.
All,
New to htc and flashing, and try doing at 3am didn't help either. hope someone can help. Will paypal $50 to anyone that can help. Thanks in advance.
Here's what i did
using One_S_All-In-One_Kit_v3.5 for all my modding
got token
unlocked bootloaded
didn't flash any recovery
flash a new .img kernel, but i used a boot.img from a zip file (home2wake zip) - don't ask why, i wasn't thinking lol
phone rom was all black, keeps rebooting
i managed to flash recovery, recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.1-m7wls.img
then wanted to restore stock rom
so i downloaded, this rom, http://android-revolution-hd.blogspot.com/p/android-revolution-hd-mirror-site-var.html
flashed zip using recovery
went through the rom custom installation of what i wanted installed.
After that it rebooted and stuck on green htc screen
i can get back into boot loader, but can't load recovery, can't factory reset, any option i select, the screen flash and sends me back to bootloader
rom won't load, can't get into recover, computer not detecting phone
Please help!!!
Check out this maybe a RUU will help -

Why did you use one s kit, I'm confused
Sent from my HTCONE using xda premium
you can try to load ADB Fastboot on your PC, then connect your phone via usb, be sure to have all of the drivers.
in bootloader, if it reads FASTBOOT USB, then you can us
fastboot flash recovery (Name of recovery).img
once that is done you should be able to at least get back into recovery....
check the link for recovery file
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236418
I am no expert, but my guess would be to go back to stock boot / recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2236418
Relock your phone: fastboot oem lock
Install the RUU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
And in the future don't use an All-In-One-Kit meant for another phone (The One S in your case)
p.s. Another thread that may help get you back to square one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251800
thanks all,
will try all the suggestions above tonight, will let you guys know how it goes. i used the all one s because it was gui and easy and lots of extra and functions. but i guess the extra made it worst.
Right now when i plug in my phone the computer doesn't detect anything, hopefully the adb can talk to it to flash a new recovery/rom/kernel.
Pm me

It wasn't the extras that messed it up. It was the fact you were using an AIO that isn't for your device. That's a big no no.

Once you get back to stock with the RUU, use Hassoon2000's all in one kit...n00b proof!

i was using this, all of the recovery on there were for samsung s3/s4/and special edition. so i couldn't get to the recovery. Then i started tweaking around with the extras and flashed a boot.img to a kernel. failed
Android Revolution ROM is not for the sprint htc one. fyi
First you'll need this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2250904
Extract to someplace you can find it, maybe the desktop
if you power the phone down then hold the vol - button does it boot into bootloader?
if so make sure you have the htc fastboot drivers installed from htc sync
if your on a windows machine from command prompt navigate to the platform-tools folder
for example
mine is in C:/users/ray/downloads/adt-bundle-windows-x86_64/adt-bundle-windows-x86_64/sdk/platform-tools
in command prompt issue the command
fastboot oem lock
once the bootloader is re-locked
issue the command
fastboot oem rebootRUU
the phone should reboot into a black screen with greenish htc letters
find the setup.exe file from the ruu file and run it.
if all goes well you should be back to stock with a locked bootloader.
good luck
Awesome, unbricked it! Thank you wranglerray!!!!!!
Also thanks to everyone that replied, but it was wranglerray detailed step that helped me through it. awesome community.
as promised, send me your paypal account wranglerray, i'll send you the $50
Let this thread be a lesson that 1) don't mess with your phone if you don't know what you're doing and 2) don't flash a GSM ROM on your Sprint phone because it wipes your boot and recovery partition (on GSM phones, it wipes data and system but sprints partitions are different).

Failing after making a bunch of random attempts to do something doesn't constitute learning. Next time you should make sure you actually understand what it is that you are trying to do before you do it, and maybe then you won't end up almost completely wiping your phone clean.
You're lucky that the international One's and Sprint Ones partitions aren't like the Sprint/international S3, or else you would've overrided your bootloader as well and had a brick on your hands.
So I recently bought a moto x developer edition off of craigslist and I was updating my phone to kitkat, when I tried to install it took me to the Team Win Recovery Project page. I did not realize someone had already tried to root the phone. Anyway, I accidentally wiped the system rather than factory resetting the phone and now my phone is stuck on the "warning bootloader unlocked page". Just wondering If there is a way to go back to the stock OS. I should mention that know the bare minimum when it comes to this so any help is really appreciated. I really only bought the phone out of necessity!
Use this guide, look for returning to stock section. You can only flash the same or higher Android version that was on it before. Downgrading can end up in a brick.

Come on Vzw users! A twrp system.img! There could be one posted somewhere. BTW any rooted phone even w/o an unlocked boot can generate one using Online Backup in play!

Hopefully this is my last question! I seem to finally have everything downloaded and in the right folder. I even reinstalled the drivers. I'm currently on the cmd prompt and input the first line.
and received a "<bootloader> Variable not supported" message, sending 'partition' okay but writing 'partition' failed <remote failure> I currently have the device on the "AP Fastboot Flashmode" (S) screen.
Not really sure whats wrong at this point
Does "fastboot devices" return your serial number?
If all you wiped was system, perhaps try just flashing the system.img with mfastboot.
You definitely have the same firmware you were on? Or was it a custom ROM?
Thing is, we have no idea what was previously done to the phone.
You may be better served using rsdlite for a fresh start.

Is that the getvar? Do not flash it.
You are better off just editing it out of the XML & use RSD-Lite

Yes it does return a serial number. T0620060PD
I don't think it was custom I think it was just 4.2 and when I tried to do a system update to 4.4, that's when I wiped the system.
So I could flash rsdlite instead of 4.4? Is there a link for that?

yes I believe so. Thats the reading I get on the device anyway.
It seems both of you recommend rsdlite. Either you know of a guide page with instructions on how to do that?
This is my first time messing with anything this in depth.
Thanks!!

Failed flashing process. 2/1i7 flash partition "gpt.bin"
The device says:
downgraded security version.
update gpt_main version failed.
preflash validation failed for GPT
....do I just have the wrong firmware downloaded or is this thing already bricked
Ive got it! Thank you so much for all the help it was much appreciated! I don't feel like quite the noob now seeing as the phone still lives, but I definitely won't be trying that again any time soon! haha.
Oh, and for reference it seemed that all I needed to do was 4.4.4 rather than just 4.4.
Thanks again!
