What's going on?!! HELP! - Nook Color General

Hey guys. I'm pretty new at this rooting on NC. But I got everything to work on my Nook for such as like having CM7.1 On my SD card and stuff like that. I have the default kernel on there running on 1.1 Ghz, but it seems like everything keeps crashing. I can't do anything without it screwing up on me. I have most updated stuff but nothing seems to work. I have a 16Gb C10 working so I believe is that but I just don't know...
...Anyone please have any advice or suggestion on like CPU settings or anything?
Thanks!

If that 16 GB class 10 is the card you're using... it is most likely your culprit. Sandisk class 2 or 4 are by far the best cards for running android os' from.
The reason is that class 10 cards have much higher sustained thru-put... but the android os' (especially) utilize much more small read/write cycles.. which is where the class 2 and 4's exceed the performance of class 10 cards.

So what should I do afterwards? Once I buy a class 4 should I just reflash on the SD with CM7 and start over? Or should I back up from this one and flash it on the card?
I appreciate the help
Running on NookColor CM7.1 Using TapaT

Always, recommending doing a fresh installation.
It won't take long.

So I leave the Nook as is? Just flash the new image?

Yes. The install and run on SD method does not touch your standard Nook install.
Just repeat the install method on your new card. If you had put a lot of apps on and organised your desktop screens then you could back those up (Titanium for the apps and ADW settings back up for the desktop), save the folders away first then restore once you had the new card working.
One of the benefits of the emmc installation method is that it makes updates, backups and restores a bit easier as the SD card is just user memory.

Is my stock SD card the problem?

I've verified that my swapfile is in use. It is set to 32mb right now. I'm using the stock card. When I use alot of apps I'm still seeing the htc screen sometimes. I just ordered a ultimate class 6 133x 20mb/s card. Will this help the problem? And what are your thoughts on pushing it to slightly higher than 32mb? Even with a blazing fast sd card??

Yes, your stock SD card will be a bottleneck in using swapper and Apps2SD for that matter. But, you really should partition it w/ 3 partitions (FAT32, ext2/3, linux-swap, in that order). The linux-swap partition works worlds better than the swapper. 32MB is optimal, any higher will not speed it up, more likely it will make it slower. Set up those 3 partitions, and flash the new JACHero2.7.3 and you'll amazed at the difference. There's a new swap-type thing going on w/ compcache, but that hasn't been incorporated into the builds yet, so just stick with linux-swap for now.
If you wanna know how to set up the 3 partitions, follow the instructions from the JACHero2.7.3 thread in the development thread. Good luck
You sure its compatible with the g1? 20mb/s? Wow. You won't have anything to worry about if its that fast....Never heard of a micro sdhc card that quick lol. Mind shooting a link on your OP? Thanks

[Q] Booting HC off of an SD card

So I just bought a nook color and am trying to run the Honeycomb port off of an SD card, 8 gig, class 4. Upon turning on the nook it gets as far as the second flash followed by the "ANDROID" in the top left corner. I've tried reburning the img on the card, but the same problem results. Any advice on how to get past this? Thanks!
check your hc image against the md5 hash.
I believe that some SD cards just don't work with HC. I tried a few times on mine and never got it to work.

I think there is another post that discusses the cards that work, the ones that do not, and the ones that work for some folks and do not for others. Due to this information, I purchased an 8 Gig Class 6 Transcend (from Newegg) that works well with Honeycomb for me.
try a class 2 or class4 sandisk, they will perform well. the random read/write times on these cards is usually really good.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/bar...oad-install-honeycomb-nook-color-sd-card.html
worked for me!!
Thanks for the help all! I was able to get Honeycomb working off of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
However, it contains updates in a zip file that are meant to be placed in a partitioned section of the SD card; I haven't been able to figure out how to place those files in other than the main partition. Is there an easy fix that I'm missing somehow? Thanks!

[Q] Running CM7 on EMMC seems slow...

I have been hacking my Nook with Cyanogenmod for a couple months now. I have tried running Froyo and CM7 on an SD card but I prefer to just have it flashed to the EMMC. However, it always seems that my nook runs choppy, laggy and slow. This when I overclock it as well. Am I doing something wrong to install it?
All I simply do is flash the newest Clockwork, boot into it, wipe System, data and cache, then install CM7. Once I get booted it seems like there is considerable lag in opening the App drawer, scrolling in just about anything.
I was watching some youtube videos of people showing there CM7 Nooks and mine doesn't even seem close to as quick... All EMMC installs should be the same right?
Thanks for the help!
I have noticed this as well.. I wonder what is it they do to get such snappy responses? Are you running 1300 mhz overclock? I also wonder if they have a different lag fix of some sort.
My understanding is that the eMMC is basically a soldered in microSD and it stands to reason that if you're using a better/faster external SD card, it should appear to be faster in most respects.

But I guess I am looking at videos like this one where they are running the OS from the eMMC and it is running like butter:
Sorry can't post link: but the name of the video is "B&N Nook Color Running Rooted Android Froyo 2.2 @ 1.1Ghz"
Mine does not go this quick at all...

I have not done 1300mhz, but I cant image that would fix the problem.

Yeah I have to admit, that definitely appears to be very smooth. When I'm scrolling through my various apps, it's nowhere near that. Then again I'm running CM7 off a 2gb SD card. Up until now, I've been under the impression that the performance was very similar between eMMC and external installs. Now I'm not so sure...
I had the same problem but I was installing wrong. I took wiping as just wipe data factory reset. When I reflashed I went to mount and formatted everything except boot it worked flawlesssly

I always do that too. In fact I usually wipe everything, then reboot back into CWM and then wipe everything again, then install. Seems like overkill I know, but I am at my wits end here...
damn me seeing those videos. I was happy and now I am going to have to figure out how to get my nook running that smooth.

Ug.. not really. The eMMC is basically an SSD memory chip; no hack jobs about this.
Well I have loaded Nookie Comb and it seems to be the quickest ROM that I have had on my Nook yet. I still think that it could be faster than what I am seeing but I am happier now.
Still can't get over the fact that people say that Cyanogen is smooth and awesome on the Nook and I haven't seen that to be the case at all. Either I am doing it wrong or I am just incredibly picky or something!

Actually, Kadin is essentially correct. Embedded MMC (eMMC) is not a raw flash memory chip. It's is a flash chip with built-in controller that interfaces to its host using the standard MMC Plus interface. Replace "MMC Plus interface" with the very similar "SD interface," package it a little differently, and you have an SD card.
That said, an eMMC device very well could have controller and/or organization optimizations that make it better at hosting an operating system than most SD cards.
The EMMC is very slow unfortunately. I've seen a write speed of only 2mb/s. That's worse than most SD cards. Class 2 level.

Would I be better running everything off a SD card?

[Q] Root or android on sd? Sorry if it is asked before.

After smashing my netbook I am finally getting a nook. I have 2 in mind but I have a quick question that I can't seem to get an answer to, which is better?
Nook Color Dual Boot Android on SD card
or
Nook Color Rooted Android Gingerbread?
Can you guys give me the pros and cons for each? Am I really missing anything by not having the ability to use the nook UI?
Thanks in advance,

Not unless you want to use it really as an e-reader.
I prefer CM7, but it is really up to you and want you want. You can always load up CM7 on an external card and try it, then decide if you want rooted stock or CM7.

First thanks for replying, I think I would like to use it as an e-reader but isn't there apps that do that anyway? Is the nook e-reader UI that good?
I am worried about warranty etc.

Yeah there are tons of apps for reading but for some reason people like the stock UI. I personally do not. Also you don't have to worry about warranty as the nook is unbrickable and if you have a problem you can just flash back to stock.

Yeah, I have CM7 on the SD card, so I could switch back to the stock reader if I really wanted to. But I haven't yet. The nook app is reasonably well done - I have a few issues with browsing the BN storefront from the app, so I prefer to do that online, add to wishlist and then buy from the app. Also you can't do the read-in-store from the android app. Still, like I said, I haven't booted back into the stock ROM yet, CM7's so enjoyable.

Ok, I think I might go for the sd approch at the start and go from there. One more question. Can I place anything on the internal space that will in turn be seen on whatever version of android I'm running on the sd? eg:videos/music?

One more thing to consider.....
If you are going to use the stock reader often and do not set up a dual boot system you are left with removing the card every time you want to use the stock system. In time, that may likely result in damage to the card reader. I have CM7 on the eMMC and a card for storage and have not touched the card in 2 months. It just stays in the reader.
The Nook app will not allow you to play "enhanced" children's books from my understanding. Only the stock reader will.

Rooting question

I had read through many of the root threads and for the first time rooter it is very confusing. Seems easy enough but when I go to links etc. they are not the same or broken. I would just like to be able to do a step by step so I understand the process and some of the other terms etc. that others throw out will be more understood. I have built computers and overclocked so I am should be able to walk through something this easy but apparently not. I have a 1.2 Nook Color. Didn't know if I should update to 1.4 then root or just go at it from here. I have read the nook developers site, here in the android developement section and none of them seem to actually work as the tutorial says. I have a 16GB class 10 card as well.
If anyone could give me a hand...I would sincerely appreciate it.
I would stay with BN version 1.2 and use manual nooter from there. Did you try that yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
If you are thinking about a custom rom check out the guide in my sig otherwise I would suggest just staying on 1.2.

So if I deregister and wipe will it go back to 1.2? I wanted to run from an SD card but I thought I read Class 6 or better and now all I see is Class 2 or 4 MSDC...very confusing.
I do like the two links and are better than what I had found so far. Added in little things that seem obvious to most...and probably are.
Perhaps the issue from running off the card came from the fact I was trying to do it off 1.41 and no one has done it for that yet?
In any event thanks for the information and puts me closer than I have been thusfar.

You can run from an SD card on 1.4 but you will not get good results unless you use a Sandisk brand class 2 or 4 8GB or above.
The only thing that 1.4 doesn't have is a working MN root.

So it sounds like my struggles are just from the mSDC? That sucks...I am sure I will use it for something though.
Since I don't even have a B&N account I said screw it. Gave up on the dual boot and put the latest CM7 on there. I got the kindle app and lots of apps. It really turned out nice. Don't know why I hesitated just going with the CM7 in the first place.
In any event thanks for the help and my kid is gonna dig the Christmas gift.
