I purchased a Bionic from Ebay and was never rooted. Was at .886 and did a manual update to .901 because of 4g issues. Phone has never been rooted although was attempted unsuccessfully.
Would like to get root the easiest way if it is available or should i just wait a while.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to at least attempt the manual root method found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395911
If .901 has introduced new complications in rooting, they haven't quite been sorted out. It's your best shot at the moment.
Will give it a shot, hope the brick doesnt come thru the window.
Please keep us posted.
negative on the manual root, typing the commands seem to work until the proggie attempted to gain root. I did attempt to finish the commands but no rw permissions leads me to believe root was not gained. I guess just have to remain patient.

My wife just got a DROID 3 yesterday. I promptly used Pete's Motorola Root Tools to root the device, then used Titanium Backup to freeze a bunch of the bloatware that came on it. Today, she installed an OTA update and lost root. For the life of me I cannot figure out how to get root back. I tried re-running Pete's Motorola Root Tools, but adb shows the device as offline, so it isn't working. Anyone know how to get root back? Thanks!
Edit: I forgot to mention that after I rooted the phone, I installed the DROID 3 bootstrapper and recovery. I took a full backup before I used TB to freeze the bloat. Don't know if recovering this backup is the way to go...
You wont get root for this version till it's been found, the root process has been fixed by Moto.
Just RSD back to 5.6.890:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339816
Then follow the below link, install rootkeeper to keep root from previous version then update with Hashcodes OTA file pull:

-smc
Thanks for the info. The phone shows that its currently at 5.6.890. Is this because the OTA update wasn't completely successful?

I think you probably updated to 5.6.890 not the leaked OTA. Maybe check to see USB debugging is still on and run the 1 click again. FYI the leaked update 5.7 is not rootable at this point but 5.6 is.
Thanks alot guys!! I was able to get her phone re-rooted and everything looks good.
Since getting a D3 I've picked up a few more techniques and strategies for easily keeping my root and customizing my device. I've found that Root Keeper will ensure you keep your root even after installing a custom ROM

Although most custom ROMs have root/superuser built into them...
I got the Bionic on Tuesday and one of the first things it asked me to do was an ota update. 893. I tried rooting at that point and couldn't. I just proceeded to upgrade to. 901. Now i ask can i still root or do i need to roll back first? Is it even possible?

So do i need to go back, get the root, and then go to 901 again?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Yes...that is the only way until a new exploit is developed for .901 and later versions.
I attempted running this root exploit before upgrading to .901 but I still lost root after the upgrade. What's a guy to do?

use the bionic path saver it will roll you back 886 root you and push 893 and 901 to your phone. you do not have to install 901. after you flash 893 root and forever root the make sure forever root keeps after a reboot. using root explorer go to system/bin/mount.ext.sh or something like that and make sure you have 3 lines at the bottom that start with chmod 4755. if they are there then install 901
I've also tried the path saver, and after installing 901 I still lose root. I also tried installing 893, rebooting, noticing that I kept root, and then after running the 901 update I lost root again.
Edit: GOT IT! I used the pathsaver to restore to 893 and then I used ROTA893 to root and the r3l3as3d tool to forever root. now I'm on rooted 901! Thanks guys

r3leased not needed if you used rota893. It has a streamlined 43v3r already included.
pathsave then rota893.. good to go to 901 with root.

Still Thinking of All of It.
I am on 5.9.901 and still have root.
Pretty stable. It was hell trying to get on to 5.9.901 as I hosed the boot, hosed all sort of stuff. Took 30 hours worth of muck and many helps from XDA and other site to get it going. But managed to get back on to 5.9.901 and rooted.
Worth every hours spent!
I forever rooted while on 5.893 just flashed .901 update now I no longer have root access
do I have to go through this whole process again?

I also had a hell of a fiasco when I tried to upgrade liberty rom to .901. Took me half a day at work to get my phone back up and working again. I'm at .901 stock unrooted and I think I'll stay here for a while. Gun shy at this point.

I am running 901 unrooted temporarily as well until a new exploit is available. The path saver did root the previous build for me but the second I pushed the 901 update root was lost.
CAn this exploit be run on a MAC?

By exploit are you referring to the path saver? I am not very familiar with Macs and what files they are able to run but if I had to wager a guess I would say no. Perhaps via bootcamp though.
This may sound dumb and noobish but I have an idea I would like to put out there. Is it possible to look at the code from Motorola's update files and copy said signature into the superuser file? This, in theory, would fool the phones factory recovery into installing the file and thus rooting the device.
Just brainstorming here
I currently have 893, but discovered I am not actually rooted anymore and I don't know when I lost it. Maybe with the 893 update a while ago. So what should I do now? Do I have to go back to pre-893? If so, how do I know which one to go back to?
The .893 update can be rooted with any of the regular rooting tools. If you gain root and apply the forever root edits, you will keep root. If you are on the 5.5.893 update, you can take the OTA .902 update and still keep root.
I just tried to "re-root" using to different methods (Pete's and the "new method") and neither worked. So, I assume I must return to my pre-rooted version before I can "re-root". Is that right?
use p3droid's one click exploit. then run the DHacker29's forever root
ok very new to rooting just rooted 2 days ago on 893 now installed update to 902 lost root...but here is my concern my phone grants super user but cant gain root access and i didnt unfreeze bloat and the update was still successfull now i cant even access titatium to unfreeze cause root cant be established so i dont understand how i can partially be rooted and just to mention as far as i can tell there are no known problems with the phone anywhere else but what should i do to get root back or is it just a simple configuration problem thanks
There's an exploit available that will root the .902 update -- Motofail. It says Droid 4 but it works with the Bionic, RAZR and Droid 3 as well.
what are the risks im pretty new and dont wanna do something i dont fully understand or that i might regret later..and how did the update complete without unfreezing bloat and where is it now.lol i guess im asking does it matter i just wanna get it right
It's pretty straightforward, basically a one-click root method.
As far as the update, it depends on which specific apps you had frozen. Apparently the ones you froze were not on the list of apps the update checks for.
i can pm you instructions on step by step instructions to root from stock to 902 root if you like someone helped me today about to do it myself here in about 5 minutes
ok thanks for the input i did motofail and it worked back in root now does anyone know of an app to overclock without changing rom

I just received 902 today and lost my root. I ran this and it's all good again. I have the Bionic. Thanks for the post!
So I've had my d4 since the release date. I have only rooted two phones no roms nothing special. I read the posts on this form just about every day been through just about all of them. I just want a simple root to remove all the junk. If I use the d4 utility to root will safe strap be installed? After root can I still get the OTA updates with out doing anything special, or something simple like a mere unroot that is in the utility? In the event that I need to send it in will the steps listed in another post suffice? Please assist I really want to root, but I love this phone and have never paid so much for any phone...
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA
nah, you dont have to do anything special
i used the motofail to root, and froze all the bloatware with root uninstaller
when the time came i unfroze everything, unrooted, installed the 219 patch
and re-rooted
Definitely freeze apps instead of deleting them. Otherwise an OTA update will fail. Also, use Voodoo OTA Root Keeper to preserve root access after an update. While I believe current exploits work on the latest update, there's no guarantee they will continue to work with future updates.
