Hi there
I am trying to organise a discussion on which android release is best for the milestone/droid. When comparing try and talk about:speed, usability, gaming, battery life and so forth.
P.s anyone getting lagging 3d gaming on gb?

Best overall experience performance/game/battery-wise is Eclair (2.1) for sure. If you don't mind loosing some features on GMAPS and not getting the latest GMAIL client. But you need a good sd-card and sd-ext or just not use much apps on the phone, as eclair doesn't support app2sd natively. Ah, good old time where I could play Angry Birds, pause it, open You Tube, watch a video, go back to Angry Birds which was still loaded in memory, no need to reload everything and start again....
I've heard bout that. Honestly I would go back to eclair if it wasn't for the lack of flash and apps2sd. I really don't understand what makes gb so slow

i think the best blance between features and snappynes is 2.2 . it has a lot of additional features and it runs good. i personally love 2.3 because of the look (im a big fan of the screen-off animation) but its too slow.
Interesting. I know this sounds stupid but what's actually new in 2.2 (excluding jit and apps2sd). And on 2.1 shouldn't that be the best for gaming if you can find a rom that has jit and supports ext2. And can't you get flash from the market anyways?

JIT takes up a lot of RAM that Milestone doesn't have =)
best performance is still Eclair... Official Froyo is laggy...

From what I have heard, Eclair has a 30FPS cap, so my favorite would be Froyo. I disable JIT on all ROMs as I don't notice much of a difference.

But surely 30fps is still rather smooth

Hi guys !
I'm a new owner of Motorola Milestone and mine came with stock 2.2.1 Froyo installed.
The thing is that despite having Froyo the interface looks just like 2.0. Main screen contains old grey tab that slides up the screen to reveal apps, camera interface is old too and there is no tethering.
I've already checked motorola update software to see if there's anything new, but apparently not and right now I don't have time to root the phone to install custom ROM (2.2 or 2.3). Is there anything I can do to get the new interface working?
Hi, have you tried Cronos Ginger ver.1.4 b4?
I just installed Plants vs Zombies on my Milestone.
No problems on my Milestone running Cronos Ginger ver.1.4 (with my Autokiller Memory settings).
See this video below:
http://youtu.be/tmCMIKdrjGE
I have also played Modern Combat 2 on the same ROM too and have completed the game.
Isn't the Cronos Ginger a custom ROM that needs rooted phone ?
Sorry for such a question, but I'm new to the subject.

This is not official version (from PopCap). Official needs about 180mb ram free to run.
Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wFqYRzC2fc and see difference.
Modern Combat 2 is working fine with 80-90mb ram free.
But still, has anyone met with such issue when stock froyo has an old interface a'la 2.0 ?
Get ADW launcher from the market. It is the lightest launcher for motorola milstoen
guys ive noticed something.
Of all the roms i think cronos runs the FASTEST. but the launchers seem to lag quite a lot. On miui (laggiest milestone rom) adw is fine(ish). But on cronos it lags
EDIT: Hmmm just checked my phone again. The lag is getting better. Spooky
Android 2.2 keeps alot apps in memory and I task killers like Adao doesn't works as good as it works on 2.1. I miss 2.1 but I'm loving the new apps on 2.2 but the memory management system is poor.
lol that video of PvZ is pathetic. My iPod Touch 4G runs that smoking smooth on its 256mb ram + 800mhz processor and retina display.
The milestone simply cannot do it.
With that said, a 512mb device can do it MUCH better. Even my Nexus S struggles since it only boots with 100mb free. A lot of crap gets killed.
I don't get why Android apps need SO MUCH RAM.
So which version actually uses the smallest amount of RAM?
Right now I'm on 2.2.1 and most of the time I have about 40MB free.
Well, it's not really about how much RAM is free, it's more like how much RAM can be freed in case you need it. So, be it Eclair or Froyo, you get around 30-40 megs free, but Eclair can free 120MB easy, without killing essential apps, while Froyo can do 85-90 with JIT and 100-105 without JIT. Unfortunatelly it is exactly those 15-20MB of RAM that we need to keep out home screen alive, or read and SMS without killing Angry Birds.
And how about Gingerbread? I'm currently waiting for new 'RTM' version of CyanogenMod 7.1 from Nadlabak and I think I'll give it a try.
So once more, to understand what people are using and help new users that come in here, might be nice to just select which is the best ROM for you...
I've taken the ROM's that are on the first page of development page...
Froyomod
Froyomod +1
Froyomod makes the Milestone usable, although it has some little problems about GPS and battery drain.
Cm6 is the best
FroyoMOD and CM6. Currently on CM6, working pretty good.

Yes. Every GB ROM is slow on MS. Sad thing that there is more GB-based ROMs than Froyo based ROMs. Eclair ROMs are ok but they lack some useful features (no flash, app2sd(possible to get app2ext actually)+ 30fps cap...
CM6 and FM are only on Froyo, and they are working great.

funny thing that I don't used any of those you mentioned Milestone is slow without flash, I don't have 3000 apps installed and the 30fps cap is what? Never heard about it. Rendering framerate cap? That could be actually a good thing (saving battery time).

Yes, 30fps cap means that frames per second are max 30. In froyo, gb it is 60. In eclair it is very noticable in games, not sure about videos...

AFAIK 30fps should be far more than enough for any game, video or anything else, except for really fast FPS on PC... so maybe it isn't 30fps? because 30fps is smooth for almost anything there.

You should try Eclair and see. Idk about Gameloft games but some games like Speedx were so laggy.
CM6 nice...
CM6 is great.. really stable and not power hungry.. but the default overclock on 1Ghz seems a little too much... i keep it clocked to 600Mhz and only overclock when running some processor hungry task.
Agreed Eclair was really laggy... i mean i have never tried any eclair ROM yet.. but the stock eclair was the most lethargic a phone can be... i felt like i had paid money for some really outdated untuned stuff... but stock froyo was good and so are all the froyo roms..
I was trying everything out there for the last 1.5 years.
Most of the time i was using CM7, then was just going to MIUI when i was a bit bored of it.
But when i switched to FM a month ago - never looked back! Almost flawless compared to the others!
CM6 revamped for the WIN!!!

Do you know the movie you watching on bluray has 29,97FPS? In Europe the standard is 25FPS. The movies are laggy?
I'd like to CM7,it has been improved a lot.In the beginning it is power hungry and heat realse is great, but now all the problems has gone. It's a wonderful rom.If I have any syntax error, please tell me to correct it,thanks a lot~
Hey everyone,
My question is pretty easy to understand.
What is the best, fastest, smoothest custom ROM, and best kernel for gaming?
I would want to play games like Gun Bros, Asphalt 6, etc. without those lagspikes, and stuff.
I tried many of them; stock ROMs, Darky's ROM, Amestris, Juve's Smart ROM, and many kernels from Voodoo through Semaphore to Galaxian (have I spelled it right?),
and now I am asking you.
With my current setup, Amestris and Galaxian GT overclocked to 1.2 GHz, I can play Gun Bros even smoothly, but after some rounds, like 30 minutes, it starts lagging, and eventually go to 1 FPS, freeze the phone, and I have to reboot it.
Please tell me what's best, because I am trying to find good, simple ROM without all this bloatware that could play it.
XDA, please help!
THANKS!
Well, there isn't a ROM or a kernel that is made particularly for gaming, so you might need to try some more combinations and see what works best for you. The strange thing is that I can play both Gun Bros and Asphalt 6 without any lag even if my cpu isn't overclocked and I never thought they were more demanding or anything. I even used chainfire3d and tried the tegra Gun Bros which has HDR lightning and some more graphics extras and it also didn't lag.

Some odexed ROM with dark core maybe
I agree about the odexed rom. Something based on 2.3.4 and odexed will be best in my opinion. I'm not a big fan of the darky and ficeto roms and kernels, so I wouldn't suggest the dark core kernel. That's only my opinion though - my favourite kernel is in my signature and I consider it to be the best kernel ever made for SGS and I've had that phone since its release but I always tell people to try to find something they'll like and consider to be the best.

Not sure, but surley if it has battery hog issues , then iam not going to CM9 , waiting for an expert reply though
It's definitely better then CM7, and probably better then many other roms out there. At least try it out.

Try tOnecosmic's ICS Port!!!
It is amazing, good battery life, very smooth, works great as my daily Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
I DON'T recommend going to ICS just yet (unless you want to beta test), builds are still too early, they are unreliable for everyday use and it'll be a while until we get a stable and good performing rom, CM7 is much better right now, but it may change in the future though.
ICS launcher FC a lot, gallery app and browser are laggy, and if you use live wallpapers everything slows down a lot, also there are many app incompatibilities now. I tried to like ICS but it's still in alpha stages (don't believe all those RC1 or beta labels, it's really not ready)
CM7 is great but yes, it's a battery hog. You could use a samsung rom (a custom ODEXED rom or stock are fine) and a custom kernel, I use semaphore with thunderbolt and it's very good performing, it can't touch CM7 in RAM management (isn't as good in multitasking), but videos, games play nice and samsung has a few good apps (it's dialer has smart dialing and its a looker, it can play almost all videos even h264 720p 60fps, music app uses very little battery since it's HW accelerated and its browser is as smooth as the iphone's, it can't be touched by CM7's), and you can delete all other samsung bloatware.

Thanks for your reply !! , i used to be on almost every new ROM lately but i couldn't handle the Lag even with using Thunderbolt and stuff , it was veryyy laggy and not responsive , iam now on CM7.1 and i have to say it is waaaaaay faster than the sammy build roms , too bad i get some force closes often and i HATE how low the music is , the music player sucks alot of battery though
my best Samsung experience was on Hybrid roms , stable , fast.
btw not all CM9 builds are bad ! you can try search for the AndroidSoul's review of cm9 , it looks veryyyyy smooth !
any recommendations for now ?

Thanks so much man ! i have seen some videos for the onecosmic's port and it is veryy fast indeed !!!!
i wonder how long do you last with heavy usage / medium usage ?
what about standby ?? , iam so going to try this soon !
With heavy usage I can use my Phone one day, but this was the same with Gingerbread.
When I only have low or medium usage, the battery lasts 1 1/2 - 2 Days, very good for a non final release. But most i charge my phone every night.

I didn't watch any videos, I flashed both versions myself and ICS isn't ready yet, got too many FC, lags heavily on some occasions and isn't as fast as CM7 (we're talking about the version for the i9000 right? )
It'll reach great performance levels in the future I'm sure, but saying that it's perfect for daily use or better than CM7 is just going a little too far.
And have you tried a high LMK for sammy roms? Like 80MB or higher, you won't be able to multitask much, but performance will be very good for games or heavy apps

I guess iam going to skip flashing CM9 then ! , iam an average-heavy user
- well , i have never tried messing up with memory but i assure you i have had troubles multitasking , and very very very bad response time on almost any sammy rom , even with overclocking i don't really feel any difference
all what i used to flash on sammy roms was base rom + custom rom on top of it + some tweaks like thunderbolt script , overclocking wasn't even noticed
i also used to tweak the colors
any help? thanks because as we all know our tab isnt that good or smooth in terms of 3d gaming any help on how to OC the GPU?
Hi!
I am interested in this too, but I found that an overclock to the CPU is enough. At 1.4 ghz, my tab runs really smooth hd or thd games, 720p videos and 3d benchmarks. Trust me, you'll see the difference even with a CPU overclock.
can you provide me the rom & kernel that you use? thanks
I am using stock 3.2 rom with _motley kernel @ 1400Mhz with ADW launcher and it is very smooth and fast. No lag whatsoever. Even GTA 3 with realmod, and tweaked up runs still smooth.
That's just my setup...
There are a few more things to it, but that's the most important...
I use the stock one because I don't really like bugs in some roms... and they don't really have "must have or I'll die" features.

I found that the _motley's kernel oc'ed at 1.5 ghz is stable, and I don't use any launcher because on my setup, touchwiz is really smooth.
I can't find a game which lags on this setup.
If you want a custom rom, the best honeycomb one is the overcome ROM. Very smooth, very fast, very stable, camera working. But I think I'll stick with my stock rom and motley kernel.
