Awesome job, thanks for the pics.
Interesting definition of cracked though lol

Do the soft buttons mechanically rotate??? It looks like they're set in landscape on the pic.

Been there too

Naw the digitizer just displays two versions of the image and light up accordingly and have their own touch sensor separate from the lcd. Kind of like a crosswalk sign.

Fixed
My g/f did it all herself with no experience so I'm sure anyone could do it.
Put it back together and there is no touch sensitivity through the middle portion of the screen looks like we'll need a new lcd : /

You need to change the digitizer again.
You probably broke the cable to the digitizer. I did the same thing the first time. There is very little space for it and you have to be very carefull when pressing the digitizer back in place.

Was like that before I changed the screen unfortunately so I have a feeling that's not it... What's the piece that gives touch functionality the lcd or the digitizer?

Ah bummer. It is the digitizer that provides touch. The LCD only gives the picture.

Hey, I'm interested in disassembling the phone to replace the LCD. I just noticed some weird horizontal banding when looking at the phone from the angle, it sucks but it bothers me.
I have a question, do you need a special tape or any other materials that the average guy might not have? How hard is it to remove the glass screen from the digitizer/lcd panel?
I'm assuming I can buy the same unit for the s710d / s710e right? (Verizon incredible 2 / euro Incredible S)
Here's pictures of my banding. I'm uber annoyed at it just because I noticed it now...

The only thing I had to buy was 3m brand scotch double sided clear tape. I do reccomend buying the pry tool advertised beside the glass as I was extremely annoyed using a knife (lol) to seperate the glass from the LCD.
The parts will be the same from your phone to mine.
Search YouTube "HTC incredible s screen replacement" than click on the first video.
Be VERY careful when you pry the bottom portion of the glass away from the adhesive near the captive buttons. You have about a 1/4" of clearance for the cable until it tears. The top of the glass is also attached by a cable and a piece of rubber but you don't have to be as careful as their is a good 1/2" of cable to play with. The hardest part is removing the digitizer adhesive from the bottom of the glass you need a very thin knife if you don't buy the accessory and if you tear it away the digitizer will have to be replaced.
3rd edit: you need a torx driver set and tiny Phillips drivers there's 1 torx size and 2 Phillips size.

I had to change my metal cover - and had no chance to do it without changing the complete display :-(

Just wondering? What did you use to reglue the Digitizer back ? Also is it glued onto the LCD or onto the phones housing? or both? Thanks for answers!

It is glued to the housing. And so are the lcd. But LCD and digitizer is not glued together.
To put it back on I used some strong double sided adhesive tape.

screen replacement
the screen and digitizer are stuck together, i have just repaced the full screen, lcd, digitizer and touch keys and it came preasembled.
there is a thin line of adhesive on the edge of the digitizer, i suppose it is to keep dust from getting between them.

Depends on where you buy it then I guess. As you can see in my thread I linked to before I have changed the digitizer only.

Hey any idea where can we get the plastic cover , i had dropped my phone so it has scratches now..

Hi tandfeen, question.. now that you replaced the digitizer, do you have to worry about dust getting under the screen? I noticed there was a good amount of black putty glued to the old digitizer and I am worried that with a new clean one it is possible for dust to get between it.

You can ebay or amazon for "incredible s battery cover" or "incredible 2 battery cover".

[TIPS & PICS] Disassembled Incredible S (Works with Droid Incredible 2)

There are a couple of threads, hope mods either merge them or put them together. I didn't to post in tandfeen and itsbeertimenow's threads to keep it clean.
You can use Verizon Droid Incredible 2 parts in exchange with the Incredible S. I bought a Verizon Droid Incredible 2 LCD and it is working fine in the Incredible S. I disassembled my Incredible S to replace the front housing (was scratched) and the LCD.
Tips if you plan on replacing your Incredible S:
If you're going to do any of the following:
-Clean dust under screen (Don't do this unless you are serious, IMO)
-Fix or change LCD
-Fix or change Digitizer
-Fix or change Front metal housing
You might as well get a new digitizer to replace at the same time, just a honest opinion. Trying to reuse the old one causes a lot of dust particles and you have to cut around the sticky putty which makes it a mess. Save yourself the hassle of doing that and pay an extra $15-20 for a new clean digitizer unless you are not OCD and don't care that your screen will have fingerprints or dust particles.

yes, the front housing, LCD, light for softkeys, digitizer, middle smoke bezel, back cover, camera, microusb are completely interchangeable.
In other words, everything except the motherboard can be reused. That is due to because it has slight changes for the CDMA radio.
I've built a hand full of desktops, and repaired a few Original NES systems.
Is this a hard process or time consuming?
Thanks again for the info/reassurance
It's actually very easy until you get to the part that you have to take the digitizer off the LCD and front housing. That's the most time consuming part, and gluing the digitizer back on, if you don't do a good job like they did in stock, you will get dust in it. I learned my lesson about that.
If you're going to replace your housing, I'd recommend buying a full front housing+digitizer+LCD set to save you the hassle.. There is someone on ebay in USA selling a full housing set + lcd + digitizer for Incredible 2 for $45-55 dollars.
I'm going to the red housing. I haven't found that one in one piece. There is a repair shop in town that said they will do the swap, new housing, digitizer, power button for 35. 30 day warranty on work but not the parts since I'm buying else where.
Kaijura, thanks for sharing the info. Quick question would replacing the ear speaker be easy? Mine seems to have died after dropping it once or could it be possible that the connection just became loose? Any tips before dissembling it? Sorry if its not really related to housing, LCD and whatnot.

Watch the youtube for the dissembled Incredible S, or if they have an Incredible 2 it's the same thing.
Here you go, the ear speaker is fairly easy. It's just this oval piece in the middle. You just pluck it out with a toothpick or a plastic pick device. Guitar pick works great.
Since it's not behind the LCD/Digitizer, it makes changing it a breeze.
some swapped pictures from a Incredible S (s710a) to Incredible 2 (ADR6350) housing. Everything is a perfect fit.
The only cosmetics difference besides the HTC logo is that the Incredible 2 has some black accents on the USB port, and the camera ring.

Thanked for the reply, so theres no ribbon/connector or anything? was thinking of opening it before i actually buy the part because i highly doubt it was blown. It stopped working when it dropped from my bed so thought it could just be loose or something.

Well, you do have to disconnect the existing three major cables on the motheboard before you can access it and repair it easily:
- The smallest one is the front four softkey lights
- The middle size one is the LCD cable
- The largest one on the back side (side facing the earpiece) is the digitizer cable.
This video should make disassembly very easy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTOyjGol_iM
The earpiece is just connected by two metal pins as you can see on both sides.. here are some pictures of the one I replaced:

Then remove charging port connector cover and gently pry up the connector. This is a simple "pop" connector.
Use a safe open pry tool to carefully pry the back housing from the rest of the phone. Work your way around the edges, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2
Remove the vibrator motor from the housing and carefully disconnect it, as shown in orange on Figure 3.
Remove the six (6) small Phillips screws on the motherboard, as shown in red in Figure 3.
Pry up to release battery tray.
Remove the two (2) silver small Phillips screws still holding the motherboard in place as shown in yellow.

On the lower section of the motherboard there will be two (2) pop connector located on the under side. Carefully lift the board and release these cables
Release the clips holding the upper part of the motherboard in place. Gently fold the motherboard and motherboard flex over to the right.
You can now remove the one "jaw" connector and remove the full motherboard assembly.
Remove mylar tape holding the touch screen flex cable in place. Gently fold this away from the device.
Heat the screen with hair dryer or hear gun on medium heat for 45-60 seconds to warm the adhesive holding the touch screen in place.
Use a safe open pry tool to carefully run along the edges, releasing the adhesive. Be careful not to go too deep into the device.
Figure 4
Reheat if needed.
Fully remove the screen from the rest of the device.
Remove or peel back the outer adhesive on the LCD screen.
Heat the back of the screen assembly to loosen the adhesive holding the LCD screen in place.
You can now pry the LCD screen out of the device and replace either screen.
Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse the order to put your phone back together again.
You can find a downloadable version of the HTC Vivid screen repair which may make it easier for some people to print out and use while preforming a screen repair, etc.

Be sure all of the internal connections are securely in place involving the digitizer. If it still doesn't work you may have damaged a cable connected to the digitizer or another important part.

Make sure you applied adhesive all the way round the touch screen so there is the correct spacing between the LCD and touch screen. This should resolve your problem.
I am in the process of replacing a screen on a HTC Sensation XL also, I have only got as far as disassembling the phone with the cracked screen so far, but I have noticed the HTC factory touch screen (the cracked one) has little clear plastic parts stuck on the underside to help the illumination of the button areas. The replacement part screen I have (which is not genuine HTC but chinese I guess) does not have these clear plastic pieces on the underside.
I have not seen any mention of removing them from the original screen and adding these to the replacement screen but is not doing this going to mean that the buttons will not light up after I put the phone back together??
Thanks for any advice

The functionality of the device will still work. The light will not go through however. You can transfer these clear buttons by applying heat and using a pry tool.
seperating the digitizer from the lcd succesfully
i succesfully seperated the digitizer from the lcd with a razor blade mainly and fishing line (not nessecary) could help though, if your digitizer is smashed pick the pieces off one by one by cutting between screen/digitizer very carefully, allways stay closer to the digitizer with the blade and stay clear from the lcd keeping the glue on the lcd, after getting all of the digitizers glass off, carefully start to peel back the glue from the bottom corner starting with the area where the buttons were, dont pull it up pull it back on itself! and carefully with a razor slice the glue using the lcd face to lean on with the flat side of the razor! the lcd will not get any scratches on it dont worry, i repeat take your time it took me 5 hours, keep pressure down to a minimum or youll smash the lcd, this is a pre buying digitizer option, because if you fail youll be stuck with a spare digitizer :crying:
hope this helps
jay
Separating digitizer from lcd on SXL is not possible simply because adhesive is applied in between (whole surface).
Been there, done that..
I always smile when see all these digitizers on fleebay..

My friend bought a new phone and gave the IncS to me.
The Idea
I decided to buy a new housing, the phone itself was fully working and the screen was not broken. I searched on eBay for some housings and found a red one that looked very nice. I fall in love with this and bought it.
The Assembling
After 3 weeks of wating for shipping my housing, I began to disassemble the Incredible and build it into the new housing.
That was sometimes difficult, especially the screen that was glued with a ton of glue and sticked to the housing and was very hard to remove.
But I also handled this hard part and assembled my new red Incredible S that will replace my black Incredible S.
The Failing :silly:
But the first try failed: After some days of using my phone, I recognized a screen lift. The glue isn't sticking anymore and dirt went between glass and display. Also i destroyed the display a little bit: It wasn't illuminated everywhere the same.
And the tip of the iceberg: I killed the digitizer, a have about a half cm in the bottom part that doesn't work anymore.
As summary: The housing looks nice, but thats all. I have a phone that looks good but can't do really much (like the iPhone )
The never giving up (aka the second try)
So I again ordered a red housing, but this time with a new display (Glass and Display as one part, they hold together now).
Add 23.12.2012:
Today I tried to build my Red phone as the display/glass/digitizer and the red case arrived. The button light is taken from the other case, since there are still working fine.
Before I built the Screen into the case, I tested the functionality of the phone and digitizer without any case. Sadly, I killed my button lights with my dissasembling from the old case.
Now I'm awaiting some new button lights and hope that I can have my complete red Incredible S this year.
What do you think about my project? Do you think red is a good color for a phone? Would you have yourself a red phone?
P.S. I know my english is not good, I had a hard day at School and my brain is now too f****ed up to write something english with correct gammar and so on...
Sounds interesting, good luck. I also dropped my phone 1 week ago, screen was fine but the casing has a little scratch(not like yours posted in picture, mine is barely noticable).
Let me know how it goes I am curious as I might replace mine too in future if I drop it more .
Looks cool bud. You didn't order a new digitizer? Or did you order a new LCD and glass and digitizer?

I remember when I dropped my phone on the street and scratched the whole front... I'm glad HTC replaced the front because of a motherboard problem and a broken vibrator (sounds weird but I know no other name).
The red housing looks nice.

Sent from one of the few remaining HTC Incredible S'
I ordered the complete package: display, digitizer and glass.
The costs for the housing and the display and digitizer and glass was about 70 swiss francs.
Still cheaper than a new phone.

So today I tried to build my new IncREDible S.
But again I failed... The screen and digitizer was working fine, but I had to take out the button lights from my first try and sadly killed them. Now I have a case, a Screen with digitizer(and glass) and a mainboard wo isn't in any case and now I'm awaiting some new button lights...

To bad you failed your second try. I hope you will succeed and wish you good luck on your third try.
Btw I think red looks hot on a Incs :good:
Why did you buy 2 housings and one screen you could have bought a new phone ?

Because the housing has some glue in it. And when I disassemble and reassemble, the glue doesn't stick as good as it did. So I bought a new housing.
And the housings and displays were chepaer then a new phone: 70swiss francs vs 450-600 swiss francs for a new phone.

Motorola Atrix HD Screen Replacement & Repair Guide

Motorola Atrix HD Repair Guide
Our take apart repair guide will show you how to disassemble the Motorola Atrix HD quickly and safely. This guide was designed by the Repairs Universe team and can help you replace a cracked or damaged touch screen glass digitizer, and damaged or faulty LCD display screens, as well as other internal faulty parts.
This guide will help you to install the following Motorola Atrix-HD parts:
Motorola Atrix HD LCD Display Screen
Motorola Atrix HD Touch screen digitizer
Tools Required:
T5 Torx Srewdriver
Save open Pry opening Tool
First step is taking out the sim card. This is located on the left side of the device.
Lift up the door and push down on the SIM card and it will release. If you have a micro SD card you will need to remove it.
Now you will need to remove the back plate of the device using the safe open pry tool which you can order from Repairsuniverse.com.
The back plate is held in by adhesive and you will need to be careful when prying the back plate off not to pull out the battery.
Start prying from the bottom of the device and then proceed all around the edges gently.

Using the T5 Screwdriver you will need to remove 10 screws around the edges of the device.
There are 2 screws which hold the battery terminal which we will remove later.
Once the screws all around the device have been removed, you can start removing the Mid Frame Bezel just like the back battery door in the first step.
Start from the bottom of the device and begin releasing the clips all the way around.
Now that the Mid Frame Bezel has been removed, you can remove the 2 screws holding the battery into the device. There will be a little red grommet piece which indicates where the terminal screws for the battery are located.
You can now remove the screws holding the silver frame in place. There are 10 screws around the edges of the device.
Take the frame out and place to the side.
Now you are ready to remove the LCD and touch screen digitizer. You will need to release the LCD and touch screen digitizer flex cables from the motherboard.
Once the ribbons have been released you may now begin removing the motherboard.
Using a safe open pry tool, begin lifting the motherboard which is held in by minor adhesive.
After the Motherboard has been removed you can move the long touch screen digitizer flex ribbon cable upwards away from the LCD.
You can now remove the LCD just like the motherboard.
We are now ready to take the touch screen digitizer off of the frame and replace with a new touch screen digitizer.
You want to press outwards all around the edges to remove the touch screen digitizer.
Applying heat with a heat gun or hot hair dryer will loosen the adhesive for easier removal if needed.
You can now replace the touch screen digitizer and the LCD.

You're Very Welcome!
thanks for the nice guide.
I somewhat successfully replaced my digitizer last night. I had to main problems:
a) somehow I created a bunch of streaks on the back of the digitizer trying to clean off a few dust particles. I made things much worse after getting too close to the felt-like border around the digitizer. Damaged the border and had big problems cleaning off the adhesive that got on the screen. I ended up doing an ok job cleaning it up, but have some backlight bleed through where the border was damaged. I'd recommend to be VERY careful in trying to clean off anything on the inside of the glass.
b) I also have a defect on the LCD toward the top of the screen.
the strange thing is that the white spots are (mostly) only visible on a black backround. They are only slightly noticable on full color fields.
the other strange thing is that it appears the white spots are not full pixels - as you can see in the close up.
if this was damage to the LCD, I'd expect that the entire pixel would not work (unless I'm not correctly identifying what a pixel actually is). I'll prob try to disassemble again tonight and at least make sure the flex cable is fully seated. I'm thinking about ordering a replacement LCD display, but a little hesitant unless I can figure out what caused/is causing the problem.
I wonder if anyone has seen something like this before - and if this is likely damage to the LCD or an assembly related issue. any feedback would be appreciated!

This is where you applied too much pressure to the LCD screen. Sometimes it works out, others, it is that way for good. I usually see this when the screen has been flexed or hit. If a bright background kills it for you, then go bright. Otherwise you may want to consider replacing the LCD. But considering the amount of money you already invested in the digizer, you might want to save for something else...up to you.
Is there any other type of glue that I can used?

thanks for the reply. guess that happened when trying to detach the LCD from the PCB. bummer.
I think I'm going to end up replacing the screen...I'm not seeing many new phones that have both SD card support and HDMI (or at least MHL) out. Hopefully this thing will have a long life as ROM support grows.
We highly suggest using 3M adhesive as advertised on our site. I'm sure there are other adhesive agents you can use. But in the event you would have to re-open the device, you could run into issues.

Hi,
I replaced the digitizer but after assembling the whole phone observed that the screen has white glow on the edges. maybe the digitizer was not glued properly to the outer casing. I used 3m tape and applied it evenly though.
However, after using the phone i came to know that it is not reacting to the touch gestures at the top end part. I suppose it is a faulty digitizer. Right ??
I have ordered the replacement and will be doing it again. Any tips to avoid the white edge problem will be appreciated. :good:

Yep , sounds like a bad Touch Screen.
Now with the white edges . Check to make sure the LCD is adhesive to the touch screen good. Sounds to me like the LCD is showing though the Touch.
Thanks. This worked out for me.
