My Epic has a custom rom with ad block (era legendary 2.2 rom). I want ad blocker for my 8.9. Can anyone tell me how to put ad block on the 8.9? Not really sure what the devs use for ad block.
Do I need root? Just looking for someone to point me in the right direction. Thank you.

In android I highly recommend an app called ad free. It is available for free in the android market. Most ad blockers block th image of an ad from appearing after its been downloaded, ad free with stop the orignal request from ever downloading to the device.

Have you checked AdAway, bdfull3r? It shows you the sources where it gets its information (3 sources), it's constantly updated and you can make your own filters. IMHO, it's better than AdFree which I used for over a year in my Vibrant.

I have just flashed to stock M7 coming from M5 Samset 19.f and i noticed that samset roms have no ads on the free apps im using, i was wondering how to be able to do this on a stock firmware?
Somewhere in the SamSet docs, I've read something about the HOSTS file and this file can control the IPs you allow in (if i correctly understood the definition of the hosts file).
Oh I'm gonna miss that tweak ...no manual work around?

You can also use the hosts file that addfree uses on windows pcs... just pop the host file with no extension (so 'hosts' rather than 'hosts.txt') into your computer's /windows/system32/drivers/etc/ area and add free browsing everywhere!

Ads are a way to indirectly pay developers for their time. Is the only viable way to do this and it's not a big hassle for users...it's just a little frame...come on!

I think there's no difference blocking the ads or never clicking the ads. If you don't like the ads and you never click them, you might just disable them.

Well, I think some ads providers even pay for impression...
However you might as well click on those ads...it costs you 5 seconds per day tops, to help someone who lost days developing something and decided to release it for free anyway, hoping to get some money with ads...is that really so bad? It is the only way to have lots of free apps...if only people understood that and clicked on the banners as a sign of gratitude...

I got my first windows phone yesterday - the lovely Nokia Lumia 1520. It's running windows 8 and I'm loving the phone and it makes a refreshing change to Android which I've used for the last god knows how many years (my first Android device was a HTC Hero).
Anyway, I've downloaded a few apps and the one that thing that jumps out, and is quite annoying, is the amount of advertisements in these apps. Without exception, every app I've installed has ads and some are very obtrusive.
Anyway, maybe I've picked a bad bunch, or maybe I haven't, but is there some app/hack I can do that will allow me to block these ads? On Android you could root your handset and install Adaway. Is there something similar for Windows phone 8?

Nothing for Lumias right now. Even on ATIV phones (Samsung), which are by far the most "deeply" hacked at this point, the only thing possible at this time would be manually editing the HOSTS file.
For what it's worth, most WP apps have an option to buy them and remove the ads. Support developers, don't just ask for free apps with no compensation to the people who make them!

Ok, happy to pay for an app if (1) it's worth paying for and (2) it defo removes the apps.
If it's a case that most free apps have ads embedded and paid don't then I can live with that.

Most paid apps do not have ads.
and those which do, are easily identifies because they get low ratings.
You know, these apps don't write themselves, and the ads in apps are one of the few advertisement policies which actually gives something to the developers (unlike 99% of ad on the web)

Understood, but the consumer has the ability to determine whether they are happy to have ads in the apps, especially when they have paid for the app. As I've already said, I'm happy to pay for apps, particularly if it's an app worth paying for. However, if it has obtrusive ads then I will not pay for it, irrespective of the reason why the ad is in there.
I'm paid for a few apps this afternoon and they are all good and I'm happy to have paid for them. I'll support the developers of these apps no problem, providing they don't give me a bucket load of ads.
Maybe the ads look bigger on the 1520 due to the size of the resolution. I don't think the ads I've viewed are optimised for a 6 inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 resolution.

I have not had a single paid app that has advertisements. Often the "trial" or free version of an app has ads, but that's something I can live with as it is a way I get to have the app and the developer gets his reimbursement. Every time I went from free/trial to paid, ads were removed.
And I must say that, compared to my android device the ads in the windows phone apps are mostly unintrusive. Most of the time they are only text based, very seldom is it a graphical banner. But by far not as annoying as the flashing ads i've seen in free android apps.
Afaik, there are only a few advertising SDKs out there for Windows Phone, and they aren't really used in an abusive way yet. I just find it weird I see the same ads in app as I see when I use the device browser. The ad I most frequently see is for Lumias (for the past few weeks its been the 2520....) Hmm....

AdAway is good, but it only blocked ads in webpages for me. If you never want to see any ads ever again I recommend installing Xposed and using YouTube AdAway (blocks ads in YouTube) and MinMin Guard (blocks ads in apps) too. With that combination I haven't had to look at a single ad in months.
Adaway blocks ads in apps too. Some ads ("native" ads like those from Sharethrough ) escape Adaway. For those, I use the #nochromo browser, which is adapted from the Chrome browser. It is *great*. You can find the post here at XDA somewhere

the only reason that i became a recognized contributor on xda when they just started the program in 2011(i think) was because you get a completely ad free xda :angel:

it works great for me as well, been using it since 2010
Used to use adblock app. But only problem is some apps like slickdeals app adblocker blocked all the links. Thats why never use any adblock anymore

I know that adaway (and probably other adblock apps) has a whiltelist function. I could launch the app, and see what was being blocked, and selectively add those hostnames to the whitelist.
I needed ad-blocking only for the browser (I bought paid/ad-free versions of all apps that I needed, and chose to not install the ones that were only ad supported). Firefox helps block most of the intrusive ads while browsing. I do miss Chrome, but not willing to deal with the ad-cluttered web for that.
I rooted till 6.0, and now with monthly updates, decided to try staying stock for some time. Manageable so far.
Main reason I always root is to use adaway. Hate those ads all over the place.
Since I'm still blocked I installed dns66. Always read wonders about it but... I keep getting ads all over the apps.
My friend uses it at his Samsung Galaxy S9 and barely see any ads. Is it a device/ rom issue? Or the app just sucks?

You can add a custom DNS resolver, you can't find the settings by default, you need to download an app that can acess activities like QuickShortcutManager, then search for NetWorkDashboard
I want to block traffic to Xiaomi servers. So far I have been using this list in my adaway: https://gist.github.com/eboye/ef2f8c3e9e3b32c0980ff1a226770b1c .
But this list may have been abandoned as it has not been updated for a while. I wonder if there are any other lists similar to this one, perhaps more up to date?
Use Karma Firewall...
Karma firewall seems to be an app that acts like a VPN to achieve blocking traffic on a per app basis. For that you have AFWall+ which does a better job and it doesn't occupy VPN. Need root though for it.
My question stands - does anyone know of another Xiaomi server URL list that I can add to my AdAway?
