[Q] Wifi connections only a few meters? - Motorola Droid 3

Hi guys,
I'm trying to get an idea of how good is droid 3/milestone 3 wifi performance.
I've just gotten a Milestone 3, which I have been eagerly waiting for almost half a year! Everything is good except the wifi connection is terrible! If I move away from the access point for a few meters(8 meters at most), my wifi is a goner. My galaxy tab, my brother's S2 and my laptop still works fine at that range, but Milestone3 just failed to detect any more wifi.
I'm extremely saddened by this condition, so I wonder what is the range that you all were able to get out of it.
Would like to get a general idea before I proceed to claim warranty overseas...
Thanks!

I've noticed my droid 3 has worse range than my laptop, but not "only a few meters".
I think range is OK concidering the wifi module is smaller than my laptops

My Droid 3's WiFi range is far better than my last phone, and equivalent to my iPhone Touch. I get a signal as far as about 275 to 300 feet away (so, 90 meters or so.) That's where I typically make my connection as I walk into the yard - that's how long my driveway is.

Thanks for the feedback, I've also noticed my GPS doesn't work at all! So I'm returning the phone to the seller... sigh...

Question about wifi

Hey guys
I ordered two At&t compatible nexus's about a month ago and they finally got here on friday (had to wait till a friend visited from the states).
Both of them are still dead stock and I plan on waiting for the official froyo (or until the "newness" wears off and I feel more inclined to root and such).
My question is regarding wifi signal. I did a search and noticed a couple of guys had the same problem but no solution. Wifi reception is really weak! On both phones it's virtually the same.
I know the stock driver that came with it is outdated, and doesn't even support wireless-n. My wrt54g linksys is 802.11g based, running on dd-wrt firmware and it shows the phones with very weak signals and they won't even connect in areas where i usually get 3 bars or so with laptops.
So my question is, is there something I can do to improve it? Also, have any of you running Froyo noticed a signal reception improvement on G only networks?
Really wish this were better as I'm not on a data plan and my room is far away from the router.

[Q] Poor Wifi ?

as previous owner of a g nexus it's has very poor WiFi signal compared to other phones looking to get the note but it's has the same poor WiFi and disconnects every time ?
Not in my experience, no.
thanks that the reason that i sell my gnex loosing wifi all time
in mine dosen't disconnect or something like that.. but it's true that has poor wifi... for example now my laptop has full reception meanwhile the note gets1-2 out of the 4 bars...
My wifi seems pretty good most of the time. I get it at the other end of our hose where my laptop just fizzles out.
I recall reading a post here about different frequencies. Could it be your router has a frequency that the Note does not support well?
My Note is better than my Dell Studio laptop by far - the note will pick up the wifi when I pull up in my detached garage... and the router is in a bedroom at the back of the house. Best by far for wifi out of all the other phones I've had, and as a wifi hotspot too.
My bluetooth devices remain connected up to about 30 meters too.
Most of the Samsung phones I've used have poor wifi atleast compared to my iPhone 4 and my laptop but it's bareable
Galaxy Note GT-N7000 on Tapatalk
In fact compared to my SG2, the Note Wifi is better.

as a previous owner of SGS2 and current owner of Galaxy Note.
I can tell you, the WIFI in these phones are the worst I ever used, sam spot, same AP, same ISP.
the distant between the devices and the ap only has 10 -12 ft at best (has one concrete wall between them tho)
my iPad 2 and my old HTC desire has full bar WIFI signal
and SGS2 or Galaxy Note only has one bar , even they are connected to the AP but the connection is very unstable, sometimes the traffic is dropped even the wifi indicator still connected. the best scenario, the downstream has 5 mega bit per second, the upstream has 0.2mega bit per second.
horrible wifi modules in SGS2 and Galaxy Note I'd say
damm that sucks

WIFI range

I'm not sure if it's just me but haven't anyone notice the wifi range on this device is unbelievable?
I'm always on wifi either at home and at work and I had a bunch of devices and I have to say this one by far has the best range I've ever had.
I'm thoroughly impressed cause I've always remember HTC always having the worse range.

I noticed that myself as well. I used to not be able to pick up wifi in certian parts of my house now i get near perfect signal i every room. I also get 1-2 bars in my garage (not attached).
Just to correct you, Sony xperia devices actually have the worst wifi reception.
All these good reviews about this remarkable gadget is opening my appetite.
So this phone: Great design. Aluminum made.Great wifi reception. What more ?
This is good to hear. I thought there was a problem with wifi. I'm not able to connect at all with my One but I have no problem connecting on my Nexus 7 or iPhone 4s. I guess I just have a defective unit. I'm going to exchange it in the morning.
Edit: Got another phone and wifi still isn't working at all. Probably gonna switch phones. I really liked the One too.
I'm having issues connecting to 5g network, 2.4 works fine, both with stock and viper Rom. Does that mean it's defective? Laptop connects just fine.

I think the Wifi signal bars are just screwy. As far as real signal goes, and speeds, it gets about the same speed as my S3 in my bedroom...But the S3 shows one bar, and the One shows full.
I think it just reports full bars even if it's only about half strength.
The wifi analyzer app confirms this. Wifi analyzer shows half signal despite full wifi bars.

What's weird though is I can see networks that I've never been able to see from inside my house before, routers that I'm pretty sure are 300-400 feet away at minimum. Really appreciating the range since my One can get connected to my home WiFi as I'm pulling into my garage, and start downloading whatever it needs to a little faster than my other phones have.
my range seems to be improved drastically in fringe areas compared to my lte
is there any way to stop that little message box that pops up when im out and about and it ask me to connect to a wifi network or remember to later

Questions about OnePlus 3T

Hey,
so I am interested in buying oneplus 3T 64GB model..
I wanted to buy Pixel XL, but the Canadian dollar price for it is $1185 ~ $1200 CAD for 32GB. That is just too much, as a student, i can't afford it. Even OnePlus 3T is over-priced, but I can manage it.
Having said that, I have no smart phone at this moment :\ . I've been reading threads regarding O3T, and I need a smart phone though so if someone can honestly answer them please, I would appreciate it:
1.) Network Reception; how is it? Does the cell phone signal drop (especially LTE?), any random disconnection? How is the signal strength?
2.) WiFi reception; how is it? I heard it is weak and there is frequent connection drops spontaneously, and sometimes it doesn't even connect (5GHZ or 2.4GHZ)? Is someone is not affected by this?
3.) Battery life; do I have to root it and modify settings with custom kernel, to get the best battery life? Or, stock software provides decent battery life (5-6hrs SOT)? I use phone for browsing, whatsapp, texting, some 5-10 minute Youtube videos, and Swipe (Facebook app).
4.) How is the return and refund policy with this company? If I decide to return the phone within 15 day period, its easy to do that or there might be complication? Has anyone able to get the full refund?
Thank you guys for the help! I am very tight on budget (student life), and just trying to find a decent phone that works.
Please , be honest and objective. Thank you!

I didn't notice any drop in wifi or LTE connection. Battery life has been great for me..on stock you should get 5-6 hrs sot. Return process is smooth, I had returned twice and both the times I didn't have any problems
1. Haven't noticed any worse signal than I had with my oneplus one. May actually be better. On ATT.
2. No issues here. I use my 5ghz network at home and haven't noticed any particularly increased frequency in wifi drops to the point where it bothers me.
3. Battery life is fantastic. Some people get up to 10+ hours of battery life. I'm unrooted and stock (a first for me in the last 8 years) and get 26-28 hours out of each charge with SOT of 4ish hours but I use my phone for a lot of music and phone calls. Sometimes I wonder what my battery life would be if I had the time to spend 10+ hours on it per day lol.
4. No experience with returns.
Honestly man, I have zero regrets about this phone and the vast majority who have this phone feel the same way. If you're considering it, pull the trigger. Odds are you'll be quite happy with the phone.
1. In comparision to my former iPhone 6 signal strength increased quite a bit. Calls were disconnected while walking around the office before. With the 3T connection became mor stable.
2. Wifi is working well and stable - not significally better or worse than with any other wireless client.
3. I had Problems with battery drains due to hight RAM and CPU usage of "Google Play Services" and "Android System". Many already complained about this according to the AOSP/MRA bug. I did a clean re-flash with OOS 4.0.2 3 days ago. Everything is fine now... not to say awesome.
4. I have no experience with returns and refunds. Word is: With OnePlus it might become complicated but customer service reacts quickly to support requests.
Like previous speaker, I don't regret a thing. I love my 3T.

1.) I have had 2 dropped calls since I got my phone in November, LTE is slow at my house which is okay but as I get closer to the city I see speeds of 100Mbps. I am with Rogers.
2.) I have not had any Wifi drops yet.
3.) I rooted but did no other modifications, I can listen to music and have the screen on for 4 hours (to and from work on transit, reading news, facebook, etc) and play music for 6 hours over bluetooth while at work and still get home with 40% battery. Best thing is phone can charge from 30% to 95% in 1 hour while still playing music over bluetooth incase I forgot to charge at home in the morning before I leave.
4.) I have never had to do a return

I have the 3000 - the North American OP3T with up to date stock ROM 4.02, ie no alternate modem firmware and am using it on the Bell network.
In comparison with other smartphones I have used and my wife's current iphone, in my area I have found that it acquires and holds the network signal at least as well and better than her iPhone 6.. I haven't noticed any unexpected signal loss or disconnection... I run four Wifi networks at my home (2x5ghz and 2x2.4ghz). I have never had any problem acquiring a signal and have never noticed any unexpected signal loss.

I can't state what will give you the best. However, I can say that I'm a heavy user on the stock 4.02 rom, am not (yet) rooted, and easily get 5-6 hours. Based on the use you describe, I would expect you will get longer.

Fortunately, I haven't had this experience.. If you want to keep this option available, you should look into the specific limitations. Many companies have limits on use, and not just time since purchase.

To be "honest and objective," I would also have to question your chosen phone models if you are on a very tight budget and just want a "decent" phone. You can get a decent new phone or last year's flagship used for much less.

Thank you so much and everyone else who replied to my questions. I appreciate it. Do you have any other decent phone or last year phone that is decent for much less? I had Galaxy S4, but it just died and tried to get it repaired, but it became worse. So thats the situation. I found Nexus 5 32GB for $135 CAD, but, i will end up paying $250 for it, which im not sure if its worth it. The phone is 3 years old, but in really mint condition though.
Every phone I've try to buy, its costing me $400-500 with taxes and unlocking fees. These are really crappy ones lol, like some 2 core snap dragon cpu and 1.5GB ram. I buy phones outright, so yeah. Cheapest is $282 with taxes, and that phone is not even worth that much, plus $50 unlocking fees.
To stay on topic, it seems like O3T seems good phone. Would any of you guys be able to comment on camera quality? I don't take a lot, but when I do, i want some good quality pictures..
So, its better to get O3T over Pixel XL?
Thanks everyone!
The Wifi drop concern comes from the many posts were saying it is dropping, weak signal strength (getting 20 Mbps - 45 Mbps at most), so i was really concerned. Even my S4 didn't go that low, which is 3.5 years old phone.
Hi xda,
I found a serious bug in OP3T, when the phone is locked and I double tap the screen wakes up, then when swipe to open camera from the the lock screen the camera app starts, when the press back button it should go the lock screen. But it's unlocking the device going into the main screen.
What is the purpose of finger print scanner and pin code lock. Any body can unlock the device by this. Please rectify this serious security bug.
OP3T is at risk.
Thanks

My experience after 2 days of owning the device

Just a quick introduction why I am writing this.
I've got technical background with a zillion years of experience in the electronics world ... and yes I'm a bit of a tech nerd. I will not go through the list of phones I owned but the last year it were a couple of Huawei's, Samsung S6, S7 etc etc... So I've never had a real 'China' phone and never had one with a MTK chipset and since I got a really nice deal on this one I bought the 6GB/64GB version for a steal.
I will not go through the unboxing since that is the ultimate crap youtube for me. Open the box, take the phone, cable and charger out and throw the box in the cabinet.
I've read people complain about wifi, camera etc and so I wanted to test this on a bit more than what you see is what you get level.
Wifi : absolutely no issue at all. Works perfectly on my Asus and Linksys 2.4GHz and 5GHz routers. To test this I installed wifi analyser and speed test from the play store. Range, I can see my neighbors wifi as good on the Alpha as on the S7 that is right next to it. Maybe slightly less on the Maze but just a bit.
Throughput. Well not as good as the S7 BUT more than good enough and explainable. The Maze is a single channel and it's max locking speed on 5GHz N is 135Mbps here which results in about 60Mbps download which is the max since it is half duplex. More than good enough for surfing, youtube and whatever.
10 meters further on and behind 1 thick wall I still have about the same speed which is excellent to me.
GPS : Since everyone was complaining about GPS with these MTK chipsets and since I am very much into GPS this was something I was looking out for to test. Test program used : Androits GPS and Google Maps. Cloudy and in the middle of my garden. Wow, didn't take long, probably 5 to 10 seconds and got a lock on 20 out of 20 visible sats. Ladies and gentlemen, there is more to it than a lock and the amount of sats. A couple of the sats over 40 dB snr and a lot of other in the 30 dB snr which is really good. But then the typical MTK which I saw in other reviews... accuracy 1m ... right. Open Google Maps and I am standing in my neighbors garden, mmm 1m accuracy my ... . After a while it slowly crawled into the correct spot and followed me around when I moved around. So, still a bit of a different behavior than the regular Qualcomm. Also now that I am typing this I didn't see any Beidou sats but I consider the amount of locked more than enough.
camera : As many have said not really top and especially comparing this to my S7 .. I will not do this. But good enough for posting on social media and a de-noise program on the pc also helped.
fingerprint : read some comments as 'the screen doesn't come on quickly, there is some delay' djeez, get a life guys. Comparing this to the S6 I had 10 months ago this one works extremely well and very fast.
There are some other things I am noticing and that I am currently checking. The charger that is supplied is a fast charge type, meaning in this case one that has 5V, 9V and 12V output. Well I haven't really drained it down completely yet but I checked the voltage and current. The voltage on my meter showed 5.35 V (which is actually a bit over the 5V default spec) and like 1.9 Amp current. So according to me at this moment the phone doesn't have any real fast charge (yet to test when fully empty, it was at 73%) but the redmi note 4 from my wife also doesn't have this and with a 4000mAh batt it means that it should become full in about 2 h to 2h30 since it should slow down charging above 80 or 90%. I find that more than fast enough since the old Huawei P8 that I tested only charged at 1 Amp max.
Now as some as you said the USB-C connector .... yes, seems a bit strange and 2 of my cables do not really fit well. They charge but the slightest movement and it is a no go, seems the connector is too deep into the device. Now I have a bunch of regular micro usb to c convertors and they are working perfectly. 4 for 1 euro or dollar and that issue is fixed for me.
The FM radio, well reception is not top notch and the stereo, or the lack of it is weird. Standing in the garden I had 1 station that I could hear stereo separation while I know the other ones are also very strong in signal strength and the stereo decoding did not happen. RDS works fine so it must be a threshold setting in the software why stereo did not work as it should. Also you can record FM which is really nice.
As far as the earpiece as I heard people complain about it. Installed my sim and dialed my voicemail. Yes, it should be a bit louder. It is a bit strange because the speaker is at the edge of the device but it sounded 'full' and nice. Maybe if we can root it we can alter the xml with the sound settings and bump it up a little.
4G seemed to work perfectly.
So far my second day of playing around a bit but I actually like it. Now need to get me a Xiaomi silicon case because this thing will eventually get to test Newtons law.
I have to agree with everything you have said, except for where you went indepth on sats as I haven't done that. I am loving this phone and currently there is only one other phone I would consider to replace it with, the elephone s8 in hopes the camera would be much much better.
When driving, google maps did disconnect on the odd occasion which I dont know is acceptable or not but as far as I can tell, it works better than my previous MTK phones which has been most of them.
I've just installed the Jan2018 update (4GB) but I missed the update reasons.
I've had my phone since mid October. :good: on the whole I am impressed. Average use is two days between charge.

Well due to the festive days haven't really had time to play but tested some stuff again. Went outside with my S7 and the Alpha and checked on Google Maps. S7 said 3 meter accuracy and the Alpha 1 meter on Androits gps. When checking on the S7 I was spot on maps where I was standing, maybe 1 meter away but with the Alpha I was like 5 meters off.
I haven't had time to use it in the car. Since my new car has Android Auto I have not had a phone holder in it. (keeps my eyes on the road)
Maybe give 'GPS test' from Chartcross limited a try. Just go outside and start it up. Check the values above the bars. I consider above 35 (which should be dB snr, signal to noise ratio) to be good. That it lost lock might be another reason, does that happen on a regular basis or was that a 1 off?

I'll give that app a test when I next go out, want to try it in the car and if/when I lose lock. It happened a few times in over 1,000 miles of driving but was quick to reconnect therefor emuch better than previous MTK phones.
