Integrated Antenna

What do people think about integrated antennas like these:

I am thinking about getting one like this for my car obviously to up the gps and cellular signal strength.
A question I have for any TyTn II experts, Which antenna does the WiFi use, is it integrated into the cellular antenna or gps or neither?

Neither, I believe all three have their own internal antennas. I say this because I have seen the internal photos of the Hermes and Trinity (which has GPS) and they had seperate small antennas. The Kaiser has two external antenna ports but after bricking my 1st Hermes by plugging an external antenna in and having it kill my radio, I'll never play the external game again. Besides it seems to work very well on all radios, even simultaneously, without externals.

The first photo is with the rubber grommet off and you can see the hole that goes through to the documented external GPS antenna. In the red circle is a piece of plastic that is blocking another external antenna port.
The 2nd photo is with the whole back off and inside the circle again you can see the extra antenna port.

2. Most phones do NOT have GPS built-in.
3. You don't need drivers to use an external antenna. It's a physical connection.
4. Get your facts straight.
5. I like the antenna. Now if it had an XM antenna in it, I would buy it in a heartbeat. It would also work great for wardriving (not with my Tilt, but with my laptop)

Who said anything about drivers for the XM Radio antenna. I said Driversfor the internal gps antena. Read the kaiser wiki... the wiki for the pre-installed gps module.

Well this is the part where tell you my way of thinking. I dont read so bare with me considering i am self taught and taking over a hundred different phones apart i can even say with out knowing that they stopped the technology cause 1000 features that are to advanced become a forum!!!!

People don't like when you use ALL CAPS. It looks like you're yelling at them.
The way you made your statement, it sounded like you needed drivers for the GPS antenna, which is not true. You need drivers to utilize the GPS radio. Two different things. You even got the two mixed up in the same post.
I seriously doubt the Kaiser is 5 years old. Where are you getting this information??
Personally I think your statements tend to ramble and be incoherent, but I digress. The Kaiser is an excellent phone. I love having built-in GPS. I am probably going to buy an external GPS antenna for it, although it really doesn't need it. I can even get 2-3 birds inside my house.

What does this mean? That HTC or other cell phone manufacturer are removing components on a board they've already produced before they release a new phone? Why on earth would they do that when they could save the cost of buying the additional circuitry in the first place and just order a run of what they want?

Not really, no. It sounds like you're saying the Kaiser is using a board that's five years old and has physically had circuits removed from it because HTC didn't want to provide all of the features/functions that they could. I sincerely doubt that this is the case, since they'll produce a couple million of these things and paying even $1 extra for circuits they'll remove and labor to remove them makes no sense when they can order up a board that they want and get it for cheaper.
Throw in that you posted in all caps (considered rude by just about everyone) and then provided information that just doesn't add up, I'm not surprised you got push back.

i noticed after getting into the bigger phones like the 1700 and the BA and the hermes that they all look the same or have very similar compositions.
I came to the conclusion that they all had gps in them from a market professional stand pioint. So really just appriciate some input.

no one said anything about removal, baords for the most part have alot of he circuits on them it makes it vary easy to acomplish global standards and upgrades and maximizing profit by making upgrades look tangible.

i would look for any type of after market booster car kit easiest way is google the word china after it and you would be shocked what youll find they can pretty much customize anything the word to use for phones in china is not cellular or htc.. pocket pc
"mobile phone"
is the key word attached to gps car kit or what ever

well not to be a drag but the hermes is been around for ages and again not to be rude but the kaiser is not the first phone to have a total new build. just some awsome exploited adjustments.

Don't insult us by calling us "genius". There are a lot of very smart people on this board. Without their help, my phone wouldn't be nearly as fun to play with.
You made a pretty broad assumption that if one or two phones have GPS built-in, then all of them do. The fact is, very few phones have GPS built-in. My last phone, the 8525, was a very good phone with lots of features. It's less than a year old and it doesn't have GPS. Go ahead and keep making those assumptions and you'll stand out as someone who doesn't know how to do any kind of research. You will make yourself look like a fool.

Actually the 8525 does have GPS! However, after in-depth investigation these XDA folks identified that while the IC Chipset did have GPS as part of it's standard fratures, HTC shorted those particular pins to ground on the circuit board and did not include the internal amp and antenna assembly as well so it was impossible to make it work on them without major micro surgery. The Trinity, however, had the components and thru software was able to have it's GPS come to life. But certainly all phones don't have Chipsets with integrated GPS.
I would agree that many companies will use a particular chip and elect NOT to provide all of the features at first release or for specific models, that is normal marketing driven buisness and gives us reasons to buy the next model.
XDA certainly has made it possible for us all to reap the collective tinkering experience and get more from the phones we have and sometimes get these hidden features with a little work.
No disrespect "aboutthemind", but I must agree that your text is a challenge to understand, but I'm always amazed at the worldwide, round-the-clock, activity on this forum. I've learned so much here.

I remember that discussion well about the 8525 GPS. I think one guy even had the GPS working, but only by disassembling the phone and having wires running everywhere. Not exactly portable...

Actually they got the GPS chip activated but could receive no valid data since the antenna bits were not present, they investigated the internal components and determined that it was basically not worth the effort to attempt to unsoldier all of the grounded pins on the chip and then get an amp/bandpass filter and antenna installed. No one ever got a 8525 to work and the project halted, but along came Kaiser!

Here's another one: http://www.mobileplanet.com/p.aspx?i=151025 much cheaper too, but only to be placed on the dash. Probably work just as good though.

My Wing has only one external connection. I bought a 3 watt Wilson booster which then goes to a Yagi (one directional antenna). Its awesome the reception I get. Costs about $300.00 to do all this.

let me ask you a question, what gives you the right to speak for another person, I would you like to help the gentle man that was here for help cause i am confused as to why you want me to engage in this. i will if we can all end up with a gps that also gives you real-time police positions. Linberg i strongly sugest you bring a positive opinion to this one cause so far your not really contributing to a solution.

gps is in the 8525 and yes you can take apart a phone. and im gane i got one in pieces so no is the time but the kaisers 8525 so the fun is one and that is poff's world i would start by maybe doing some reading on his work mans a guru

Sorry man, but I can't make any sense out of what you're trying to say. I didn't put any words into your mouth. I don't know where you got that idea.
You made some pretty broad statements about GPS in phones and I told you that that is not true - most phones do not have GPS built-in. The 8525 has some of the hardware, but it is not a complete, workable solution.
Also, I did not call you a fool. I said you would look like a fool if you made broad statements about phones in general that are not true.

radar detector software

I was just going to replace my radar detector and figured Id see if they make anything for the tilt? Any input is greatly appreciated. I know there is some stuff that tells you where speed cameras are but just wondering if there is something that offers a bit more.

No amount of software can take the place of missing hardware. How can the tilt possibly detect speed cameras without the needed detection hardware?

He's probably talking about the "speed camera database" POI for his GPS program. As far as detecting radars is concerned, unless someone comes up with a bluetooth compatible hardware and a software to go with it, detecting radars using the Tilt is impossible.

He already mentioned he knew about that, and wanted more.

It depends on the GPS software you want to use on your Tilt. A good source for overlays for different brands of GPS software and hardware would be http://www.scdb.info/en/ - if you are looking for a European source.

I've been thinking about pulling some of these elements together. Try www.projectezp.com.

Nothing and I mean absolutly nothing beats a Valentine 1 Radar detector. http://www.valentine1.com/ Unfortunatly you are going to have to skip your car payment for the month because this puppy clocks in at around 400 us dollars. You can only get it online as best I can tell. At least, I have never seen them in a store anyway. My wife gave me this for Christmas last year upon my request and it is hands down the best radar detector money can buy. I seriously mean that. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money. Once you buy one, your a customer for life. Any time they release a newer model you can send them your old one and for a small price they will upgrade you into a new one. I drive an Audi A6 twin turbo and routinely drive in excess of 100 in zones posted at 50 tops. I have never once got a ticket with this unit. I can spot the popos before they even get out of bed in the morning. If they take a **** I know where. I'm serious about this unit. It is the king **** of radar detectors. The very coolest feature is the multi boogie monitor. It will track multiple signals in case you happen to find yourself in a spot where the cop is hiding in a radar rich zone. This unit can tell the difference between alarm signals, automatic door opening sensors and just about everything else. It has multiple operating modes that will filter out various levels of noise but keep in mind the more you filter out the higher risk you run in filtering a boogie signal.

As far as for the tilt, don't even try.. I guess it's not impossible because there's always a way for everything, but what more do you want a phone to do? lol

Google Wallet

Anyone think it's possible to make GWallet to work on our phone? I really really like the function.

The Vivid doesn't have an NFC chip, so Google Wallet won't work. There once was a NFC enabled microSD by Moneto that could utilize MasterCard Paypass, but wouldn't give access to Google Wallet, only access to Moneto's Paypass app. However there website says they're "Undergoing some Changes", and although i didn't look hard, I couldn't find any place to purchase - not to mention last I heard it was only compatible with Samsungs..

It's not AT&T's fault. When the Vivid, and just about every other phone, came out last year, NFC technology was in a state of flux - and it still is. Google announced just in the past day or so that it's changing to work with all cards. Few phones have the NFC chips. A lot of businesses are not yet equipped to work with them. The next round of new phones should have more phones with NFC chips. A year from now might be a lot different. However, taking a credit card from my "real" wallet and running it through the scanner might take 3-4 seconds. I really am not upset if that's 1-2 seconds slower than using my phone.

FML! Left my N7 on a plane.

So United has a horrible Lost and found system. I called them less then 30 minutes after walking off the plane. I wanted someone to walk to my seat and physically grab it. Since i was near the rear of the plane and the last one out of my row im pretty sure no other passenger would of grabbed it. All they could do is basically tell me to report it on the website and i "might" get a call. The thing is I know and have talked to a few flight attendants and it seems like a lot of the time there co-workers hide the stuff and keep it for themself. So instead of united actually doing a physical check it is pretty much as good as gone at this point. I really have no faith i will get it back. It was a flawless N7 16gb too!. Doubt I will buy a new one to replace it even though i really loved the device, I just have too much other things going on to afford it atm. So if I dont get a call/email in the next few days, it was nice being a part of these forums and loved the vibe here.

This reminds me when I lost my old GBA case on a plane. It had so many good games in there, and the GBA itself. I still had my SP case though, that had the SP and games as well, so I didn't lose everything.

Get a case or sleeve that you can tether to your bag, belt, etc. Also, Case Logic LNE07 comes in red so it's hard to visually miss it.

All they could do is basically tell me to report it on the website and i "might" get a call. The thing is I know and have talked to a few flight attendants and it seems like a lot of the time there co-workers hide the stuff and keep it for themself. So instead of united actually doing a physical check it is pretty much as good as gone at this point. I really have no faith i will get it back. It was a flawless N7 16gb too!. Doubt I will buy a new one to replace it even though i really loved the device, I just have too much other things going on to afford it atm. So if I dont get a call/email in the next few days, it was nice being a part of these forums and loved the vibe here.

United Airlines is the worst. From the most cramped planes with the worst seats in the industry, to the worst customer service there is. I used to fly Continental exclusively, but since the merger, no more. Good luck.

Any chance you had Lookout or some other tracking service installed? Sucks man. My wife is a flight attendant and she has turned in several Kindle's and what-not in, so perhaps there is a chance. Best of luck!

yes i have lookout installed.

You never know, I found someone's kindle on a Southwest flight and took it right up to the counter. They said they had already hear from the passenger and knew whose it was. Messing with other people's gadgets is bad mojo.

Can you tell if it's still at the airport? If yes, that is a very good sign that it's probably been turned in (and someone turned it on and connected to wifi...but lets hope that was in an effort to identify you for good reasons). If it pops up online anywhere outside of the airport...it's pretty much gone. Hopefully you changed all your passwords to all your accounts too...notified any credit cards you have tied to any of those accounts, etc.

it wasnt able to locate it which leads me to believe it wasnt turned on and connected to wifi. I had google wallet active on there but no credit card tied to it, just the $10 that came free.

If you bought it with a credit card you might have some buyer protection like, replacement for stolen or broken items. I buy everything with American express, I have a 90 day window in which they will replace if lost, stolen, broken, etc.... Plus they extend any warranty an additional year...
Visa has something like this on a few of the cards...

you need to input your passcode anyway, unless you have it stored in your tablet for someone to find out

I am really surprised that Google doesn't have an easy way to register our devices. Every Android device has numbers associated with it that can't be changed. The MAC addresses for both the WiFi and Bluetooth interfaces are unique, so every device that has either of these radios could be identified. It should be part of the OS that these tablets can't install any software if the registered owner reports it lost or stolen. If the device has cameras, a picture should be taken when it's connected to the internet. These pictures could be retrieved when a valid case number or subpoena is provided. At least a warning should appear on the tablet saying it has been reported lost or stolen. Make it a pain to use a misappropriated tablet.
Yes, I know there are programs out there that do this for you, but they are easily circumvented by doing a full factory reset of the device. Come on Google! Take a bite out of crime!

Someone on another thread said that somebody sold them a Nexus 7 that was apparently known to Google as stolen, and I guess Play access was disabled or something, I don't know the exact details though...

An app is only easily removed if it is loaded as a user app. If it is am system app a standard reset went be enough. On the other hand maybe they will be smart enough to take it further.

A very similar thing happened to me on a BA flight inbound to heathrow years ago. On that occasion i left a case containing some sennheiser noise cancelling headphones and an ipod nano in the seat pocket. I realized just a short distance from the gate and went back but they wouldn't let me back on. They never found for me either. I was eventually told that "I think someone has add it mate".

I have my devices set to take front and rear photos on evey boot and on multiple incorrect passcodes which are uploaded staight to dropbox and google plus. They also text each other with gps coordinates on every boot. Again, this is only useful if the thief doesn't factory reset or flash a new rom.
I wonder if devs could implement a passcode for cwm et al to secure the flashing process?

goto play.google.com and install plan B remotely, youll be able to track it once it's online, as long as it's still tied to your google account

I read on Google's help pages that they can remotely lock a device so might be worth calling them. If someone can't use it they might put it back in lost property or something.

[Q] NFC on the GS4A: the battery cover has nothing to do with it, right?

So, again I've got this dinged up GS4A I got for a great price (it was missing the original battery cover, original battery, and it has a spider-web crack in the screen but the digitizer is 100% functional) and I just realized it's supposed to be able to do some NFC stuff as well, and that the batteries for the GS4A (and the GS4 also) are supposed to have the NFC antenna built into the battery pack itself... but mine apparently isn't working at this point. It could be the one thing that's not functional with this dinged up device (because the previous owner dropped it), and I figured it's one of three potentials:
1) the NFC capability is dead because of some damage to the circuit or a broken lead someplace internally, or...
2) the missing battery cover (which I am trying to locate a replacement for but for whatever reason there are NO suppliers anywhere on the planet that have the Dive Blue battery cover which is a bit ridiculous) may provide some functionally in terms of an antenna (since there are two sets of contact points plainly visible on the back of the GS4A), or...
3) the battery I have - which I had to purchase from someone on craigslist because I was unable to find one anywhere here in Las Vegas, not even at Fry's Electronics which pissed me off - is a counterfeit one and it's missing the NFC antenna inside the battery packaging
At this point I don't know which one it is, could be just one, or two, or a combination of all three issues at the same time, I wish I knew for sure.
But can anyone else chime in and tell me that they have NFC functionality (reads tags, basically, and whatever else like programming them if you happen to have or use the rewritable ones like the Samsung TecTiles) with the battery cover removed and a real Samsung or third party replacement battery?
I keep thinking I'm just doing something wrong, but I've reset the GS4A several times in the past week for testing purposes, complete factory wipe (hold Volume Up/Home/Power to get the recovery menu, wipe data/cache/factory reset) and when I enable the NFC circuit I get nothing at all from any tagged items I have - a few library books from here in Las Vegas which use RFID tags which I've been able to read with other phones like the Nexus S in the past, and so on.
Sure would like to figure out why it's not working, but I'll just keep trying for now.

I can confirm that NFC works without back cover and my third-party battery (Hyperion "Replacement For Galaxy S4/I9500") on SGH-I537 using tag from tagsfordroid.com.

Thanks for that, I'm confident this is perhaps a counterfeit Samsung battery but I haven't been able to get a real one anywhere here in Las Vegas for testing that aspect. I found another seller that claims to be using "the real thing" and I put one in and then enabled NFC and swiped it across a DVD from our library system directly on top of the embedded RFID tag and... nothing.
So I'm going to hold out hope that yes, it works when I have a real battery and not some cheap Chinese knockoff which I'm pretty sure is exactly what this one is. Hell, with a full charge on it it'll go from 100 to 90% in like 30 minutes of use, guess I learned my lesson the hard way from this experience and won't do that again.

Thanks for the info, I may have to consider those, seems like a great price and having the charger would obviously make it easier to keep 'em both charged as needed. Heard some good and bad things about Hyperion so I'm on the fence again, same thing with Anker batteries as well - some folks love 'em to death, other people hate 'em with a severe passion.

Should note also that not all RFID tags can be read by all NFC phones. Depends on the type of tag and the type of reader. You should try it with an actual NFC tag to be sure!

Well, I realize that but I've been able to read the library tags (and others) with other Samsung Galaxy products (the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus, etc) so I can't imagine for some reason that Samsung just decided to break that functionality in my particular case, who knows. I'm sure it's the battery I purchased, will just have to wait and see. I'll be ordering either the Hyperion or Anker two-pack w/charger next week and will find out soon enough.
Sure hope they work...
