Hey everyone, I used to have a rooted Cognition Captivate. I went back to the basic 2.1 and rooted it back to normal. I put the update.zip and one of the ROM's in that internal drive and when I went to recovery mode by doing (Volume Rockers + Pwr btn) and all that came back was:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
I wanted to flash my ROM that way because I can not download the Free Clockwork application to my phone anymore. I used to but all the sudden I can not. Let me know thanks!
oy
if you have the update.zip that rom manager creates, there is no use for rom manager.
if thats on your internal sd, just hit reinstall packages, when it reboots hit it again and it should put you in CWM recovery
this is well documented all over, please search.
If it doesn't I know with 2.2 I had anbissue with sig verification might have to search that

im on samset 2.0 rom running android 2.2
what happens is that when i install clockwork mod recovery in rom manager and try to make a backup, it goes back to the orignal recovery screen without any nandroid backup option, any fix
Two things that perhaps you have ommited:
1) Root you rom
2) Before pressing the option for the backup, you have to select "flash recovery" option in Clockword, that downloads the update.zip file which actually contains the custom recovery. Don't worry nothing is actually "flashed", just a download
Cheers P.
but be aware that clockwork recovery is far from reliable, read from here for more info...
I don't know if there's a new version of SamSet 2.0, I used it like 2 weeks ago and Clockwork didn't work for me either, I read somewhere the file system is somehow changed in Froyo. My solution was going back to Eclair until a FINAL Froyo is released.

I don't run FroYo, but in Eclair, there's a problem sometimes with clockwork not putting the proper update.zip in the root of your internal sdcard.
Easy workaround for me is to go to the clockwork folder and manaully copy the recovery-update.zip file to the root of the internal sdcard and rename it to update.zip.
Even then, once in a while it doesn't autorun, so all you do from the standard recovery is select to run the update.zip and then it starts up clockwork for you.
Good luck.
Thanks for the help but i guess i changed back to android 2.1
Another reason i changed back was the lack of apps support
clockwork works fine on eclair

You can if you want. If you already have apps, you have to back them up with titanium backup and if you master clear you have to copy all your stuff you want including the titanium backup folder to your computer otherwise you will lose them.
I always backup with titanium backup (tibu) then just use odin3 1 click to go back to stock, then use cwr to flash the rom. I don't usually master clear (because I'm lazy).

Well, since you already have a custom ROM, you don't need to reroot.
1. Back up all your apps using Titanium backup.
a. 1. Download Titanium Backup from the android market.
b. Press the menu button and then batch. press the button that says RUN next to Back up all user apps. Select the apps and RUN. This will take a while, but let it run.
c. When it is done, plug your phone into your computer and mount your phone. Copy the folder Titanium Backup from the root of your phone and save it to PC or external SD.
2. For a complete wipe, restore your stock ROM.
a. Open ODIN one click.
b. Put your phone in download mode.
i. Remove your battery, external SD card and SIM card
ii. Reinsert battery and battery cover.
iii. Hold down both volume buttons and while holding them down plug the phone in.
c. Press start and wait until it is finished. Do not unplug for any reason.
d. When it is done you should have a freshly installed stock firmware on 2.1 eclair.
3. Once booted completely to home screen, open odin one click again, connect your phone and Master Clear. This step will delete everything you have on your internal SD. This will reboot phone.
4. Install ClockworkMod Recovery.
a. Mount and copy install.zip, and the ROM, MODEM, KERNEL to the internal SD
b. Go to recovery mode.
i. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
ii. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select. You may need to do it twice.
iii. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green/ red menu.
5. From the clockwork recovery use the volume keys to scroll to "install zip from sd card" and use the power button to select
6. Scroll to "choose zip from sd card" and use the power button to enter
7. Choose your rom and select it. Confirm that you want to install it and then give it time to install. Follow any other instructions they give you and then navigate back through the menus to restart the phone.
8. Restore from backup.
a. Download Titanium Backup from the android market and open it.
b. Plug your phone into your computer and mount it. Drag the Titanium Backup folder you saved earlier onto the root of your phone.
c. Open Titanium Backup. Press the menu button and then batch. press the button that says RUN next to Restore missing apps (select the one that includes data). This will take a while, but let it run. It will ask for you to confirm the install of each application.
d. When it is done all your files should be there.
And that's pretty much it.. This is only for WIPE ROMs so that you can clean up everything and just have your apps after flashing ROM.
For No WIPE ROMs, you can just install over the previous ROM. Many ppl have stated to having issues this way , especially from switching ROMs from different devs..
Hope this helps
I rooted my phone using the SuperOneClickMethod and then installed ROM Manager and flashed clockwork mod recovery onto my phone. After this i tried to backup and install a new rom onto my phone and when i would do that it woudlnt allow me to backup and it wouldnt let the rom install. it would just bring me to a recovery screen and i would have to reboot my phone. i tried unrooting, formatting the SD card, doing a system wipe and then trying it all over again and now when i try to boot into recovery it just shows a trangle with a cell phone laying down next to it. it doesnt let me do anything i have to pull my battery to reboot it and then it goes back to normal. What do i do to fix this?
PS: my Volume Up is broken so i cant even attempt to boot into stock recovery.
If you can't enter on recovery.
I think you will need to install the original ROM, just using RSD lite.
Or search for froyo version if don't need base.
so i went to download mode and flashed back stock with odin i896 rogers,
rooted the phone was going to install firefly rom. But when i downloaded rom manager and tried to do the captivate clockworkmod flash it doesnt work. I have tried using a update.zip and everything from 3e recovery pressed the reinstall packages doesnt work. I have tried to copy the recovery file to the system/bin and stuff, still doesnt work. Any way to fix this.
Also, i saw in the reviews everybody with a captivate is having issues with that TODAY.
anybody know how to fix this? I have tried a recovery file replacement and all that doesnt work? Anybody? I have read other threads about this those files dont work...
If you have 3rd recovery issues. You need either get into download mode and odin to your stock firmware or use odin to flash a kernel with recovery built in using the standalone odin. I know that firebird offers an odin flashable kernel which you could use.
is their a way to downgrade from 3e to 2e, to be able to flash? for rogers 2.2?
What are you even talking about, in terms of 3e and 2e?
Just flash back to stock ROM, put update.zip in your root of storage, and once you've done that, reinstall packages TWICE, by now you should be in a green menu, this is the Clockwork Recovery menu. Using the volume keys and the power button, navigate to 'Install from .zip from sdcard', and select the ROM you want to install. Once you've done that, all you have to do is reselect it to confirm.
If that doesn't work, or it's telling you something funny when you try to install, your .zip is corrupt and you might need to redownload it.
I believe you can use sgs kernel flasher app to flash a new kernel. I would suggest which ever fire fly uses. This will fix your recovery and allow j you to flash the rom
i think this is a server issue with rom manager, because captivate cwm flash isnt working, i will try later.
If you have 3e recovery this won't make difference
this is a known issue of recovery 3e - signature issue.
you can do the followings for flashing the rom:
1. copy the update.zip to your sdcard root folder;
2. shut down your phone and use key combo to boot into recovery mode;
3. apply the change twice to get into cwm;
4. select your rom zip file and flash the rom;

if you are on 3e recovery...you can apply the update.zip a million times but it wont work .....
need to be on a modded 3e recovery that allows unsigned zips or on 2e recovery...

since he is on the stock rom, using key combo will get him into the stock recovery and apply the changes will work for him if using the correct update.zip.

not everyones 'stock' is 2.1 with 2e recovery....maybe he just got his phone from rogers and it had 2.2 on it already. considering in his first post he says hes already on stock rom and it has 3e recovery.....
to clear it up, im on rogers 2.2, i was on stock from kies then flashed to firefly with ease when i did the recovery file change, the problem i think is you know the first button u click in rom manager it isnt downloading the thing. Last time i downloaded it for captivate did the switch and worked, this time i think the server is offline.
i flashed from firefly to stock, the/now the recovery...^^^^^^^^

if you did the recovery file change so that you bypass 3e recovery signature verification, just drop the update.zip onto your /sdcard/
you dont need to use ROM manager for anything
how do you get into recovery mode on a i897 the phone is just rooted
which update.zip? theres a bunch

and put in the recovery file with root manager into system/bin replaced it and
then flashed into recovery from rom manager and did reinstall packages twice and it worked. Thanks for the info ^^^^^^everybody.
I've never flashed a rom before. I currently have stock froyo with the paragon kernel i flashed using the app sgs kernel flasher. I have clockwork mod rom manager, I created a backup of my current rom. So then I tried installing the serendipity rom from the sd card but i get an error message. I read on the sticky on how to flash a custom ROM you need to use ODIN and flash back to stock 2.1 then do a master wipe and re root it and stuff.
Their link to download ODIN is broken so I don't know how to get it. And is there really no other way to flash it besides doing a master wipe and using ODIN?
flash to stock and master clear is not needed. what IS needed are specifics on WHAT error message you get when trying to flash the rom you want
The error message is
"E: failed to verify whole-file signature"
"E: signature verification failed"
"Installation aborted"
Then it brings be to the blue menu so i just select reboot system now
bad download, re-download rom.
May be completely off, but it doesn't sound like you're actually in clockwork mod recovery, but rather stock recovery.
But here's the post with the one click odin with mirrors and I personally would suggest useing it since I generally like to stick to as clean a flash as I can:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Second, I don't know if you've ever seen MobileTechVids tutorial on how to flash custom roms, but I suggest you watch the full series first if you haven't already.
here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsafJ-9uRqk
I watch the series and try and stick as close to the tut as I can when I'm unsure (or the one provided by the Rom maker as they know what's best for their rom)...
One suggestion, when flashing Serendipity disconnect your phone from cable right before the actual flashing (gave me a glitch in which I couldn't mount storage via usb). Other than that, read read read. I feel it's all I do when it comes to this stuff, but proper research is indispensible.

Ok I got the stock rom flashed back and rooted it using one click. Now for some reason I can't reboot into clockwork recovery mode. I flashed it successfully. So i click on reboot into recovery and nothing happens. I try clicking on install room from sd card and that doesnt work either
Power off, hold 3 buttons att screen will come on. Keep holding. Screen will go off. Keep holding. Screen comes on again let off the power button but keep the volumes held, this will boot you into stock recovery, since you said you flashed cwm already I'm assuming you mean with rom manager, so the update.zip should be on your sdcard, so just reinstall packages twice and you should boot into cwm.

On serendipities main "download" page they have instructions to install. In those instructions is a link to a file you can download. Place that file along with the serendipity 6.3.zip file in the root of your sd card. Use the " 3 button" technique or Rom managers "reboot to recovery" option to get into stock recovery. Hit "reinstall packages" once/possibly twice. That will put you into clockwork mod recovery. Select install zip from sd card, find the serendipity6.3.zip and click power to flash. Confirm. And after it does some stuff it will ask you to reboot. Upon reboot it will as if you want to enable lagfix. Hit plain "Yes". Watch it do its thing and viola...
You have the "dirty" way of how to flash serendipity... But first I please ask you to spend atleast a day reading this forum or others and understanding these instructions and the reasons behind them.
followed instructions off the website and still doesn't work
I was running 2.2 and have done a lot of reading a video watching (thanks Mobile Tech videos) and finally conjured the guts to flash serendipity.
I flashed stock using odin...that went great. Copied the update.zip to sd card. Installed zip twice in 2e recovery. Copied Serendipity.zip file to sd card. started in recovery mode, selected "install from sdcard" selected serendipity.zip file and it seemed to go through that process rather quickly. Then I selected reboot and then everything just started FCing all over the place. Can't even load the stock that I had on there. I don't know what to do. Help please. I can get it back into recovery mode. Tried doing the wipe data/factory reset. That did help either. Help please. I really want to try serendipity. Thanks again in advanced.
Did you run a restore using TiBu at all? Or was it just a straight flash from stock to Serendipity?
Plus, were you running a phone that came with 2.2 out of the box? Or did you upgrade to stock Froyo yourself?

I did run TB and I had originally flashed up to froyo (took me all night one night) and then went through the process I explained and hit the dead end. I finally was able to get odin to read the phone and flash back to stock. It was a learning process. I realized that I needed not only the Serendipity_6.3.zip file but ALSO the kitchen file to included with it. That wasn't in the directions I don't think. Finally got it all on there. I love it now. I appreciate everyone's help. Any word on a how-to for Bluedipity?
