I was going to install a new rom on my captivate (which was running AXURA).
I back up user apps with Titanium Backup, then I go into recovery mode to revert back to stock. There was only 1 nandroid backup in the console, and that was from the date I flashed Axura, so I thought it was a stock rom. I flashed to that, but when I rebooted the phone, I still had AXURA but without any of my apps or customizations. In addition, the haptic feedback vibrates constantly without anyway to stop it, and error messages keep popping up on the screen that give me the option to "force close" or "wait"
I went back into recovery and deleted all user data hoping that this would wipe the Axura but instead I still have the same error ridden Axura build now without keyboard! Also unable to do BT file transfers (I tried to put the new custom rom on through a BT transfer but to no avail).
I tried the four steps here http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode and still havent been able to get it into download mode so that I could use ODIN to fix the issue.
None of the computers I plug the captivate into recognize it (windows or mac). I have installed the drivers on one of the windows machines and it didnt recognize. the other windows box no drivers were installed but it still said nothing. The phone also said nothing even with USB debugging enabled it would not say anything indicative of a USB being connected rather it would respond like I had connected a charger (just the alert noise and charging graphic in menu bar)
I dont know what to do here...I want to get axura off my phone and get a working rom installed. At the very least I want a way to get a rom onto the internal SD or to have the computer recognize the device. What do I do?! I appreciate all help in advance.
-Dan
You have ROM X with Kernel Y.
What color is the recovery mode text that you're booting into (red or green).

Yo Im a friend of his, his recovery is the stock samsung blue recovery
What he is trying to do is place the clockworkmod update.zip on the root of the internal sdcard but he can't get into download mode
Or
Flash using Odin
I am not too familar with samsung phone, I have a Droid X. Is there anyway to access the external sdcard instead of the internal?
**Update
So he still had the clockworkmod update.zip in on the root of the internal sdcard
he is able to get back into clockworkmod but the backup when restore, boots up with force close errors and he cant connect to the computer when booted and for some reason he cant get into download mode.
Is there anyway to access adb through the clockworkmod recovery?

If his computer wont see it then ADB wont do you any good as it will tell you there is no device found. Looks like a jig maybe in his future. Should have used odin to return to stock instead of a backup file.

So he reinstalled the axura zip file(which is what the nandroid backup was of) and it gave him a error on line 10 or something. he rebooted and the force close messages are gone and his phone works but his computer still doesn't recognize it!
Any Suggestions?
What happens when you plug the usb in? On phone and pc
Has he tried other usb ports or another computer?
I sympathize because I flashed p10.2 from p4. Tried to flash the update zip instead of doing Odin to stock. Scared me and I learned my lesson. Do it the right way the first time. Shortcuts can lead to problems.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
SOLVED: when having trouble with your computer not making a good connection to the phone, try your USB HUB on the mother board. it totally fixed my problem!
So here it is. I received a cappy from a buddy at work.
Basically, she is running cognition (FROYO BASED) rom, not sure of the kernal, and Cwm.
i can get the phone to reboot into RED CWM recovery, and even into DOWNload mode.
The phone was shut off during a factory reset. the battery died.
(IDK the girl was a dumbass and did it from settings on the phone not in CWM )
The phone will boot, ONLY after a factory reset from CWM but the setup google accs f/c's and the only thing i can get it to do is volume up/down pull the notification bar down and power off recovey dl mode...ect ect.
Task manager say's there are no APPS installed on the phone running? yet when i go LVL 2 RAM clear, the phone says 13 apps closed..
I think the Stock APK's have been deleted, since i cannot get into menu at all.
Since she factory reset the phone, and wiped the SD CARD, ALL CWM recoveries she created are GONE.
I have Cleared the cache, and wiped dalvik code, fixed permissions.....
I'm very familiar with the VIBRANTS, not the cappy's so this is a challenge to me.
my Vibrant has connected with all the usb drivers from samsung, but the cappy cannot. I've even downloaded the drivers for just the CAPPY, uninstalled all others, and Still not recognized, yet my vibrant does?
i've installed i think every driver on here for captivates, kies downloads, even went to the samsung website and Downloaded from there.
STILL NOT CONNECTING.
Even DL'd the AIO cappy toolbox (very nice to have for my VIBRANT)
Still no avail.
THE PHONE CANNOT MOUNT THE EX SD CARD. So that idea's out.
all my drivers are correct for the 32 bit vista OS. even tried on my GF's 64 Windows 7.
Still no avail.
I've installed the drivers with the phone in DOWNLOAD mode even, still not connecting.
Rebooted the computer after removing and also reinstalling drivers.
Changed between 3 diff cords, all work for my VIBRANT,
still no avail.
Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

First, see if you can find out which version of Cognition she was running (Gingerbread- or Froyo-based).
Once you have that information, I believe you should be able to download the appropriate ROM on you computer and copy it to the microSD card (adapter or whatever method you need to do to get it there). Since you can get into CWM recovery, you could try flashing the ROM from there. Assuming it's a full wipe rom (and you're not concerned about keeping apps installed on the phone), it should reset things to a more workable state. (If you are worried about apps remaining... I don't know what to say at this point, since you can't get to Tibu.)
If that doesn't work, you could try the one-click back to stock (realizing that you're having connectivity issues, I'll get to that in a second).
When you connect the phone in download mode to ODIN, does the yellow COM:# show up?
If you have tried ODIN on your Vista computer, try running ODIN as Administrator.
I've had some luck in the past getting the phone to be recognized (assuming Froyo) by doing this:
1. With nothing connected to computer, start ODIN (one-click to stock would be good).
2. Pull battery on phone.
3. Reinsert battery, but do not power on.
4. Hold Vol+/Vol-/, and insert USB cable.
5. Wait for it to kick into download mode, release buttons, and wait again.
6. See if ODIN recognizes it.

Thats my problem, the cappy does not see that there's an EX SD card there at all? says no files, but i've tried to push a cognition rom to the EX SD and use CWM to flash it to get it to boot, but the phone cannot see that there's an EX SD, but the SD card is fine, even my vibrant used it..
ODIN as ADMIN? tried that and nothing, still no yellow com port,
i know how to use odin, as my VIBE has been "Bricked" a few times lol
the vol up/down button combo does nothing, just shows up as a charging screen, the only way i can get the phone to download mode is through CWM.
the phone is running a FROYO based cognition ROM. or that's what her bf put on there.
This may sound stupid and simple but is the device set on mass storage from the settings menu? If you know.
Also have you tried mounting your sd cards in CWM?

lol THATS MY PROBLEM> the phone thinks it boots normally, but i cannot get the settings menu. like the "SETTINGS APK" file was deleted when she formatted the SD!
but i was just playing around and i got google voice search to pop up!
then from there i used my WIFI and setup the google settings, then i went to the market grabbed CWM and used the cognition rom i've already downloaded, and used it!
then the GREEN CWM booted, and it still cannot MOUNT EX SD card. so the flash failed.. HMMMMMM
As of now i am gonna go into the rom i DLed (cognition) and try to DL Root explorer and hard push the Settings.apk file to the system. HOPEFULLY from there i can get my settings back to restore the phone.
Realizing that it's a long shot at best due to connectivity issues, have you tried using ADB?
If so, you could push the ROM you need to the internal SD.
so, used root explorer to move the NEW cognition froyo rom from the EXternal SD to the INTERNAL SD. from there i used CWM recovery to flash the rom, the rom flash was successful, but now the phone is stuck in bootloop on the AT&T world phone screen.
and CWM will not LOAD. FML
Looks like i'm gonna have to take this apart and get to the internal SD card. =/
Can you get to CWM with the Vol+/Vol-/Power combo - hold those past one AT&T screen and when you see the second one, let go?
Adb was not an option at that point, the phone couldn't recognize it even had a phone attached to it.
but now that i'm stuck in bootloop and with no CWM recovery OR DL MODE, yeah the jig isnt' workin... HAHA
i guess its just a paperweight now.. Owell, i tried.
i held it for about 3 mins... lol and the jig i got for my VIBRANT isn't workin either. I didnt know these phone's can lose the 3 button combo reset? i often flash I9000 roms to my vibe, thats why i have a jig, but i didnt think cappy's would do that unless i flashed an i9000 rom to it? lol
Just because I'm not sure if you tried it - have you tried plugging the cable into a different port on your computer? If it's not one directly connected to the motherboard, that can sometimes cause problems getting the phone to be recognized.
Also - does the phone show any signs of recognizing there is a cable inserted (like charging)?
tried every port. No the phone only acts as if it wants to display the batt charging symbol, but does not show, I cant believe it, i actually think i bricked a galaxy s.. haha
Another long shot, but you could try the One-click unbrick. Since it's Heimdall-based, there's always a chance.
Wow, didnt know that even existed. Definately gonna be useful for my Vibrant, haha i'll give it a shot.. THANKS, i'll report back after i try it.
I hope it does something. With the connectivity issues you're seeing it's starting to sound a little like hardware issues.
I'm going to throw out a checklist of stuff, knowing that you are already experienced with ODIN and ROM flashing, simply because I know I usually can use some sort of checklist to make sure I've caught everything.
- Redownloading/reinstalling drivers, rebooting before connecting phone
- Redownloading/reinstalling ODIN package
- Redownloading ROM to flash
- Hold V+/V-, inserting USB cable
- Remove battery, hold V+/V-, insert USB, insert battery
- Hold V+/V-/HOME softkey
- Hold V+/V-/HOME/Power
- If download mode reached, allowing phone to sit connected for long time
- If download mode reached, connecting phone after opening ODIN
- If download mode reached, connecting phone before opening ODIN
- If download mode reached, connecting phone after ODIN, disconnecting, reconnecting phone
That's all I can think of for a checklist of stuff to try/retry.
I appreciate the help but i've tried all of those options several times, The jig did work to get it into DL mode, but from there i'm still in the same **** position, my computer will not recognize that the phone is connected.
Is it possible that the phone somehow lost its drivers? what i mean by that is, the phone acts different with different USB ports, completely.
On one port it says unknown device, another USB android composite device.
Its as if the phone's changing as i change ports. Very FRUSTRATING!
i think it could be a hardware issue myself, but how could a corrupt drive work so well? To the T every time i've used the jig DL mode fired up, but my computer still cannot find the drivers to run it. Hell i've even tried using winusb drivers package to force install the phone, still no avail.
Like i said, I really appreciate the input, I figured if i couldnt figure it out, someone on here had some EXP in doing this lol i've just never had a driver problem give me so much trouble. IDK, bout ready to turn this paper weight into a pile of ash.
If you can get into cwm, have you tried doing another hard reset/factory wipe?
Thats the problem, earlier i COULD get into CWM, and hell i flashed the new rom perfectly!
now it is stuck bootlooping, therefore i just used the Jig, and first few times it didnt work, now its stuck bootlooping, download mode is attainable, and still NOT connecting to my pc via usb.

Try a different computer? also, which version o of odin are you using? I've found 1.3 & 1.82 to work best.
I cant understand that I couldnt connect i897 to my pc. Beforehands I have never had such a problem. I tried 4 different PC but nothing changed. After plug in it starts to charge my phone and ask me the connection type. I choose mass storage but then nothing happens...
I tried many methods but didnt work. Now I decide to upgrade to KK1 from KH3 but it also didnt recognize my phone in download mode.
HELP
Are you sure you you have the correct drivers? It could be a bad cable. Have you ever used heimdall?
Sent from my ICS powered Captivate.
I tried 3 different cable and all of them were working good before. I uninstalled antivirus program and installed different drivers and many other stuff to have healty connection, but nothing happened.
I also reset and wipe data from the phone but nothing changed. Now I think that it could be hardware problem. There is no reasinable way that I find. So need help

I can connect my phone with bluetooth. Is there a way to upgrade UCKK4 with CWM recovery. As I rememder I can do this with update.zip file. If yes, how can I find this file?
I downloaded fasty kk4 for captivate and upgrade my phone with CWM recovery.
It looks fine but It still doesnt recognize my PC. When I plug phone to pc menu is coming and I choose mass storage then nothing happens. As I know I am using right drivers because it were the drivers working fine before.
Is there any advise at that point? Is it a hardware problem? By the way I am using comodo internet security.
Link that I downloaded fasty KK4:

After all I cant open my phone After last update with UCKK4 it was working fine. Then I decided to apply lagfix. I loaded update.zip in sd card then update it in CWM. After it was loaded. It starts to open recovery mode everytime.
Firstly At&t logo is apperaring for 2 times then recovery mode is coming. I cant connect my phone to PC in any way.
As a result, My phone is unusable. Is there a way to make it working?
What about using button combo to boot into recovery and reflash a Rom that u have on you sdcard.
When I use combo button it opens recovery modes but I dont know why, it is limited. I just can choose 4 options that;
-Wipe user data
-Wipe cache data
-reload(or smthg like this) package
-reboot
When I choose reload, it starts to apply lagfix. After it starts it automatically comes to recovery mode again. I loaded the kk4 update in external sd and open in recovery mode, but it didnt load this file. May be I need to reach to internal sd somewhat but I cant.

Yeah, I think u messed up when u loaded the "update.zip" previously. There's no need for that on Gingerbread. Just flashing a dev kernel that has cwm recovery baked in will do. But regardless, what's done is done. You have just got to get into download mode somehow and flash a dev kernel then flash a dev rom or Odin/Heimdall back to a Stock.
?? What about wipe data/ factory reset from the recovery and then see if it will boot up.
Other than that u have gotta get into download mode. Have u gotta jig ? If not, look in my sig link below for links on how to make one or where to buy one.
Thanks for your care. I just check the link about jig. But it seems hard to apply for me and I just open the phone in download mode. The problem is the phone dont recognize the PC. I am now trying to connect the phone to my PC on Linux. Should I setup special driver to recognize the phone by Linux?
If I cant succeed, I will try jtag or smthg else. Thanks for your help 4_2ndtwen.
So, I've been looking around, but I still can't find a solution. I cannot mount my sdcard in any way, using TWRP and CWM. Currently my recovery is TWRP. It can connect to PC as a separate storage, I can see everything in My Files, but when I use Link2SD it doesn't mount. I could really use some help as i need to move my large files over to SDcard.
Edit: Now my phone is in bootloop, must've been a factory reset that killed it. I can't connect to Odin as I might've let debugging off. Or on. Either way I can't connect to Odin to reflash. And since I can't mount sdcard, I can't flash through recovery as well. Darn it I screwed up big time.

did you try reset chash memori + wipe factory setings
Go to download mode (power+home+volume down) then connect to Odin. Flash stock rom via odin. It should works to make your phone back to normal.
Try to enter Download Mode ( Volume Down + Home + Power ) ..
Connect your Device with PC
Now if you use windows 7 .. It will search for your device update and install it ...
Open Odin ..
should be Ok now.
Sorry for the extremely late reply. My cousin fixed it for me, I think he reflashed. All is back to normal, except that I need to root and upgrade to CM soon. Thanks to anyone who replied.
Hello all and thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I'll try not to post a wall of text.
In a nutshell the problem I'm having is - I cannot see my zip files in the stock recovery console under the sd update section. In fact it's like the sad card isn't seen at all. I've taken a zip of cwm, placed it on an sd card, inserted the card, boot into recovery and no zip file is seen. What I'd like is any and all details (perhaps a short tutorial with links to the right files) on how to do this.
Why? - well here's where it gets funny. Old android phone of mine I thought to be dead suddenly springs to life (sweet). It has a pattern lock which I don't remember (not sweet). Tried using google account, apparently I used a different one than the one I've been using for years... The short of it is I'd like to get my data off it or at least see what's there. I've heard I can flash cwm through the recovery console, then via cwm, flash a pattern lock reset (in theory). So I figured I'd give it a go. I hope I explained this well. Any help you guys can provide will be awesome. Thanks!
More info on the phone - no it's not setup for debugging mode. No I cannot access it via the PC. So adb and Odin are out. Also I know I can factory reset easily - not looking to do that though. Thanks again!
The stock recovery only sees the "Internal" SD card, so anything you put on your actual SD will not be detected by the recovery. Download a file manager from google play store. I don't remember which one I used in particular, but try Root Browser or ES File Manager. Copy the file from your External SD card into the Internal SD and try again. Hope this helps.
But... you say you don't know the password to the phone. I'm not sure what can be done besides factory reset...

I don't think you can flash cwm with stock recovery. If you aren't able to flash via Odin in download mode you are pretty short on options.

You can actually. That's how I did it. When I got this phone the USB to PC connection never worked, only for charging. I was disappointed that I'd be stuck with stock ROM, but I was able to install CWM via Stock Recovery.

Thanks for confirming. Sucks that the OP can't get it onto the internal, then.
If you google "a creative way to bypass pattern lock on android" the first result will show you where I got the idea from. (sorry, would have put a link here but the site won't let me)
that being said, unless the OP there is pulling our legs, it should be completely possible to access the external SD card from stock recovery as that's how he described he did it. now I don't know if stock recovery is the same on all Samsung android devices, but I would assume it likely is, or is at least close.
I'm almost sure if I had another t679 that I could get into, that I could format the card and have it work on the locked one. not sure if it's worth it to me though since at this point I'm mainly pursuing this for personal knowledge and notoriety lol. BTW thanks to all that provided insight thus far. here's to hoping someone has some additional information for me.
