One of my favorite apps for my iPod was Wifitrak.
It was a wifi access point scanner and auto-connector program. If left on and running it would scan for open access points, connect and then ping the internet someplace to verify a connection. Sadly Apple decided this ability was to much flexibilty for the world and pulled it from the market.
The beauty of Wifitrak though was that if you were traveling in a foreign country and just touring around all day you could turn on your iPod and usually by the time you had lunch it would have found several access points and all your email would have been refreshed. All while it was in your backpack.
So my question is.... does this sound like any program out there for the Androids OS?
I have found a few (several actually) wifi scanners in the marketplace but none of them seem to have the auto-connecting feature that allows me to leave my phone on yet unattended and have it attempting to refresh my email and chats while I am admiring the scenery.
Search the market. There are multiple wifi management apps.

Does anyone know exactly what is causing this problem because it continues to happen across different ROMs and different Radios. Is there some fundamental reason why the X1 can't maintain a connection with IM clients?
I'm on T-mobile in the UK and running the valkyrie_V3 WWE ROM. Windows live messenger will disconnect if i put the phone into standby for as little as a minute and sometimes even when I'm in the middle of messaging. I keep getting messages saying "wireless connection not available trying to reconnect" or something similar.
I've tried IM+ and while that doesn't give disconnection messages it's doing the same thing as i have tested it using different accounts.
I can't get ebuddy working on this ROM because it won't let me enter the password for some odd reason but that has had the same problem with other ROMS in the past.
Has anyone found a solution to this or is it something to do with T-mobile settings?
I should point out that throughout all this i maintain a good signal of at least 2 bars and according to the phone the data connection hasn't dropped.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.
i used to use AOL's own mobile-based IM/chat client for AIM, and it always kept me connected without problems no matter what. only problem was it was INSANELY slow.
i've switched to slick, which i'm not crazy about, and i'm having the same problems as you. i'll randomly get disconnected with the phone sitting with full HSDPA reception, not going into sleep or standby....i thought it was just slick's crappy programming
Which network are you on?
Also are you 100% sure AOL used to stay connected because i thought the same thing about IM+ but a lot of my messages weren't getting returned. I signed into 2 different accounts, one on PC one on phone to test and it turned out the same thing was happening just not as obviously.
This is really frustrating, my old K800i used to stay connected to windows live for days at a time, my friends blackberry also has no trouble staying connected.
i too have the same problem, we need the xda gurus to fix this, hopefully they would be able to do so in the near future

pretty sure it was connected constantly. i had some pretty lengthy text sessions and i never got any error messages (IM not received, user not on, signed off, etc). i mean, i can never be 100% sure, but pretty sure. i only used it fo ra couple weeks before getting rid of it, it was creeping death slow for some reason
I'm too really desperate for a solution to this problem. My device is a HTC Touch Pro2 running Windows Mobile 6.5.
The case is that I will launch a new business site in just a few weeks whos customers are for the biggest part young intellectuals more often than seldomly really integrated with the modern IT-development. Hence I've always wanted to add the Windows Live messenger plugin to the site so that our customers can have a live chat completly anonymously without having their IP traced and logged which is the case for the markets paid services. Furthermore, the msn live plugin is completly ad free and doesn't cost a penny. The paid services out there that other corporations use for their live chat often comes with an URL to the host even though the customer are paying for their live chat module. The most important part though, is that I can bring with me Windows Live Messenger wherever I go which for the most part is a complex and not even that usual solution in the paid service segment. I think you can understand my problem now =) I'm just desperate to have my live messenger in the phone ALWAYS and ALWAYS stay connected.
For an example of the plugin I'm refering too have a look at my personal website:
martinandersson.com
A little more specific information describing what really happens with my device:
Windows Live version: 10.7.0061.0500.2000. Language: Swedish (Also the language of my OS).
I am running the client non-exclusivly. It always stays in the taskbar and never quit on me unlike what happens to programs that stay open running in the background for a longer period of time. In that way, it works great.
The main Windows Live window's (which are displayed and runned as a seperate program) options/settings are set to sync my e-mail although the frequency are set to "manual" and the other options below this drop box are for some reason greyed out. I guess this has to be interpreted as if live doesn't sync my mail at all, which I like being that I do not have an hotmail account or need this feature in any way.
The status of my phone always always show two small 3G icons (one just '3G' and one '3G' above a meter) and if I click in this field I see a ticking clock which shows that it is indeed connected to internet ever since my phone's last reboot. This has never been in any other way. Still, I did download the DiamondTweak and enabled the "internet always on" feature, but again, I do not think that really was the issue and from what I can tell, the DiamondTweak just hasn't made any difference at all.
One detail of great importance is this; Whenever I browse the internet, update my rss feeds or switch to the messenger contact list window through the taskbar, the 3G symbols changes to display an H. That tells me that this "H" must show for the phone to have a "real" internet connection? Could this be the trick, one has to find a fix to always have the H show? If that would be the case, I just can't understand why the phone says it is indeed connected to the internet when there's just a 3G-symbol in the status. Anyways..
Even though the messenger dies completly and just as what this threads owner wrote, shows a "wireless connection lost" message when I swich to its contact list window, it sometimes live for quite a while. The thing is that it just doesn't get the message instantly. The phone can be in standby mode (really haven't figured that thing out, everybody keeps saying "standby" mode but for what I can tell all that happens is that the display goes of) for sure, and then I write myself a message through the live chat plugin on my site but it takes about 6 to 10 minutes for the phone to give a sound and notice me of this message. And again, for the most part the live messenger doesn't stay alive for that long, the sites plugin goes offline and then if I turn the phone's display on and access the live messenger it says that the wireless connection has been lost and reconnects.
Moreoever, it never gets my plugin to go back online either. For that part to happen, I have to first get online with a desktop client and then again login with my phone. For if I stay online with the desktop client, the phone's client is indeed alive, but won't receive any messages. I have to reconnect with my phone so that my desktop client gets thrown out. But of course, is just a matter of time before my live chat module and my phone's client gets offline and I have to do everything over again. The really annoying part is that the phone's client dies a long time before the site's plugin catch up and goes offline. Hence I might loose a lot of customers who think they are chatting with me but never get a reply.
Given the description above, I think the problem really is that live messenger doesn't ping or talk with its server that often, IF the phone is in standby mode. If it isn't, if the display is turned on, I recieve my messages instantly and everything works just fine. Sure there must be an easy fix for this problem, a small edit to be done in a config file somewhere?
All help and all problem experience is much appreciated.
Hello all, a quick question here.
I've done a search on this issue and didn't seem to find any match.
I run a stock off the shelf Note, no modifications. It connects, without any problem, with my home wifi. On many occasions now, when I'm in public place with open WiFi, I run quick tests to see if it connects. It does and says CONNECTED with a good speed. I check if it's really connected by refreshing my weather report and I try the ESPN Score app. EVERY TIME it says that it can't connect to the respective servers. So I'm actually NOT CONNECTED at all? I'll disconnect and reconnect several times and it gives me good connection speeds, but I'm still off air.
When I get home, I hit the WiFi, and in a couple seconds I'm connected with working apps.
I've tried everything and just have no idea what's blocking connections away from my house?
I run both Lookout and AVG on my phone and haven't found any settings from them that might be the reason for the blocking?
Any ideas?
Thanks.
In my experience most public WiFi spots require you to log in through the browser to set up the connection. It is there, but until you log in, nothing but their page is accessible.
All they want is your email and to show some ads, so it normally fine to do.
Usually when you open a browser or website, it should load up a "LOGIN" screen for you to enter a username or password.
It also depends where you are, most libraries and hospitals will give you access to free Wi-Fi without a login. In coffee shops or an office building, you will need a login.

Thanks for your input!
I'm embarrassed to say that I actually never tried opening the browser, I just kept trying to make the apps. and widgets connect.
I will definitely give that a try next time I'm out. I really have no desire to use the public open WiFi's because of the threat of being hijacked or spied on by some random coffee drinking hacker, I just wanted to make sure all my phone functions work properly.
Thanks again!
many open spots lock down different ports to stop people using loads of bandwidth
if it gets connected with 1 wifi then it should with others, no problem with the system.
All public wifi spots I use will connect but do nothing until I load the browser and agree to their terms of service etc.
I've ran into a small issue with internet sharing on my HD7. Everything works fine, however, I'll get a message t-mobile to enable my phone as a mobile hotspot, $15 a month. Before this I've never had an issue with internet sharing, probably used it for 5/6 months (ever since mango has been out.) The internet isn't blocked, it just keeps redirecting. Lately I've had to teamviewer my home computer to get around this, which is extremely inconvenient.
Anyone know a fix to this? Or is a new policy with t-mobile to pay for the service?

Actually, with all cell providers, tethering/hotspot has always cost as an add-on to the plan... with that said, I am T-Mobile with my HD7, and with the deepshining rom, I have never been charged (knock on wood). if you have the stock ROM, maybe it flags the data as tethered so they can track it...
Found something interesting today. While using my internet sharing, I only get the t-mobile redirect while using chrome. However, in firefox, I can browse freely. A bit interesting.

Its because they are "blocking" tethering based on browser UAstring, and nothing else. For this reason, you can extremely simply spoof your UAstring as early Firefox or Safari versions (or just use FF or Safari) and not get redirects. There are addons and extentions for FF and Chrome to easily spoof the browser UAstring to anything you want.
Try this UA spoofer for chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg
I've been using the "Firefox 4" UAstring. I've tried some Safari strings also but some pages don't load properly (mainly GMail and Google+).
Its a horrible policy that many people have been fighting with for a long time now. Not only does it not work stopping any moderately sophisticated user on their desktop (because spoofing is SO easy), but it inadvertently "blocks" anyone trying to request desktop sites on their phones. Many browsers (especially Chrome Beta for Android 4.0) by default browse in desktop mode (or let you easily request desktop sites), and get redirected inadvertently.
You can call and complain all you want and the CS reps will either play dumb, or are actually unaware of the process of how they're sending out these messages. I've yet to make any headway on them.
My house got robbed the other day. Amongst some of the things they stole, was a Samsung Tablet which is connected to my gmail. To my surprise and disappointment, the thieves started using the tablet and they connected it to Internet (via WiFi or sim, cant tell..I did not have a sim in it). Recent activity in gmail shows that the tablet sincyed few hours ago but
Find My Device "Can't reach deice" so it is useless..at least for now. Recent Activity shows Location: Only the country I live in, which is not sufficient, but very conveniently shows the PC I am using as the suspicious activity and even shows the IP. This is the disappointment. Now the good news....the idiots are using the Tablet to play the video games already installed on it and remain oblivious to the fact that their activity is tracked under My Activity. From there I can what games they are playing and the time but I can not see the location. How the hell is Google - that makes ALL ITS MONEY based on location and demographics - does not show that data especially for stolen device?
I need an advice as to what can I do now to track them. It all feels so close...I can see what activities they are doing I just do not have the location!
P.S. I do not care about the tablet...I care about the car they stole together with the tablet. So please, do not advice me to erase my details into the tablet and etc....I want to use the
tablet to track their location so I can get my car back.
P.S.S. Please..please..please...do not provide answers or solutions that depend on having done something prior to the robbery (like install something or activate something that is not activated by default). The only thing that was done prior to this is to link the tablet to a gmail account to allow access to the Google Play Store to download apps. There is no facebook or any other social media/location tools there..just games for my 3 year old son to play with.
Hello,
I have tested for the first time an iPhone 11 and an iPad Air 2. Here are my experiences.
I turned on the devices and the iOS setup came up.
After the language selection -> Wi-Fi select I have to connect the device to the internet. In this case via Wi-Fi or mobile data.
There is no way to complete the setup without internet.
I discovered all this in under 3 minutes after unpacking the iOS devices. It is terrible. What if you don't have internet or don't want to connect to the internet? Then you get stuck in the iOS setup and can throw your iPhone and iPad in the trash. The same behavior applies to iPod Touch, Apple Watch and Apple TV.
For comparison I have an Android smartphone and a DVD player. These devices can be used without internet, there is no need to connect to the internet in setup.
It's not trash man, you only need internet for the setup. it checks everything goes well and prompts you if you want any of the dozen features they're offering
Here further experiences. I have tested with the current iOS 14 version.
The first step is always to connect to the internet.
iPhone, iPad etc.. are completely dependent on Apple server. Without internet in the first step (setup) the user can not even use the notes app, camera app and other basic functions.
In general there is no possibility to install apps directly and locally on the iPhone, iPad etc. I need an Apple ID account to install apps from the App Store. This also applies to open source apps such as VLC app. There is no other possibility to download and install the app e.g directly from the developer website.
I did some more tests when the iPhone and iPad are reset to factory defaults to see if the user needs internet connection again in iOS setup. Yes it is mandatory to reconnect to the internet in iOS setup after language selection -> Wi-Fi selection.
I can generally confirm iPhone, iPad etc. cannot be setup and used locally.
Even more experiences as it is with watchOS (Apple Watch) and tvOS (Apple TV).
I have tested an Apple Watch SE (watchOS 7) and Apple TV HD (tvOS 14).
When I turn on the Apple Watch SE the watchOS 7 setup appears, but I can't set it up locally. I need an iPhone. But as I said before an iPhone cannot be setup and used without an internet connection. This also means that I can't use the Apple Watch SE as a normal clock to use simple functions like reading the e.g. time.
With Apple TV HD the tvOS 14 setup comes with the first start and it is exactly the same as with iOS/iPadOS devices. After the language selection, I must to connect to an internet connection in Wi-Fi selection.
It's not waste man, you just need web for the arrangement. it checks everything works out in a good way and prompts you on the off chance that you need any of the dozen highlights they're advertising
snaptube vidmate word to pdf
The Wifi to set-up thing is because of the high security IOS devices have, this makes your phone impossible to steal, for example if your Iphone gets stolen, the thief will need the password, and if he dont have it, he will need to reset and when he want to set up the phone again he will face the same horrible setting-up process but with your account logged. So the stolen iphone would convert into a very expensive paperweight (if he doesnt have the password)
Late to the party, but most things on smartphones nowadays require internet. I mean what do you plan to do without internet? Use it for calls and texts? You may as well get a Nokia 3310 for that.

Even Nokia 3310 sometimes needs internet (The new version). At least for me it asked for Internet connection when I once tried to send an MMS.

Connect it to your PC through iTunes, which should allow the setup to complete.
