G1 issues...

I have a couple of questions...
First, I've had the Cyanogenmod loaded on my G1 for a while, and for the most part, I love it. Many thanks to the developers! However, a few weeks ago it started acting up. Apps have been mysteriously disappearing, I'm unable to install new apps and app updates, it takes 20+ minutes to boot up and it's become noticeably slower. I want to just wipe and reload CM, but I've been unemployed for a little while now and haven't had the money to pay my bill, so T-Mobile has cut my line off until I pay up. I can still use it to connect to the internet over wifi, obviously, but I have no connection over a data line. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that after reloading, the phone must connect over a data line in order to register with Google upon first use, and without doing that, I can't use the phone. If that's the case, reloading CM would make my phone useless, right? If I can't register with Google, I don't receive email, and really can't use the thing. I still get a lot of use out of it, even though I cant text or call because I just moved to a place that I'm not familiar with and use the Google Nav a lot. Plus, I can connect to the internet still using wifi, and I have a bunch of games I like to play. So am I better off just waiting til I get a job and pay my bill, or would I be able to use wifi for that initial registration with Google?
Also, assuming I can reload, am able to install new apps again and can still use the phone, are there any free VOIP apps out there that I could use to make calls over my wifi connection until I get my bill paid up?

[Q] CoPilot Live 8 ?

Anyone else use this navigation software ?
I used it on my Hero without any major problems. It took them an age to get a Froyo version sorted out. Put it on my Nexus One. Its now an excellent example of how to write totally non functional code! I am unable to download maps via the built in map downloader. A definite step backwards by ALK Technologies.
As for any kind of support, that's as useless as their software!
So, unless someone here call prove to me otherwise, stay well clear of this software. Take heed of the comments on the Market about it too.

Hmm works fine for me. You just need to turn on wifi before downloading maps through the app.
What exactly is the problem when you try?

My wifi is on permanently if i am at home or at the office. The maps never download. There is no indication they are downloading either, no progress bar at all. What phone are you running it on ? A Nexus One ?

Yeah a nexus one...
Once you pass all the setup screens and get into co-pilot (with no map), go menu get maps, or updates. Its one of those options. Then you'll see the progress bar.
For some reason or another the download is probably being interupted. Maybe you let your phone sleep and wifi turns off?

CoPilot 8 .. utterly useless!!
Ok so today I tried to reinstall CoPilot 8 on my Nexus One.
This software is awful! Firstly I was unable to install the voice I wanted, just said File Error. Sorted that out by choosing a different voice. Then tried to download UK maps. Failed every time. Made sure Wifi did not go to sleep just to make sure.
Figured it was time to send emails of complaint to Head Office in the USA. Interestingly enough every single published contact email address for that company bounces... odd eh ? Have given up on CoPilot and doubt I will ever get my money back.
To every one else, think long and hard before you waste your money.

When you bought it through market you should have got a license/activation email from '[email protected]'
Send them an email and it'll automatically create a trouble ticket which they'll respond to.

I have lost count of the number of times I have "raised a ticket" with ALK. Interestingly the moment they reply (in any way, useful or not) they close the ticket. Pointless if the problem has not been resolved. They are very difficult to get in touch with (in a sensible way), perhaps this is deliberate? Given the very poor comments on the Market about this application I can understand their desire not to communicate with the many angry people who purchased this application and are unable to use it. I guess the next step is to send them a letter and if they still choose to do nothing I will pursue my refund through the UK small claims court system. Perhaps that will make them respond ? Its a shame because on my Hero the software worked reasonably well :-(

Works fine for me. My installation and setup process went very smooth.

Its great when it works properly. I had an issue with license keys after I had a N1 replaced and they sorted it out pretty quickly. If you reply to the email the ticket is re-opened.
Having said that i've seen many complaints on the net about them. If you bought it on a credit card just threaten to charge it back. That'll kick them into gear.
The pattern i've found is that anything 'easy' to fix they handle well, anything obscure or that might take some diagnosis or thought and they keep fobbing you off hoping you'll give up.
Luckily google market has a 24 hour refund period.. if you have problems in setup just hit the refund button. A bit late for you now tho i guess.

I am sorry you are having problems but it is not bad software. I was one of the REALLY early users and had to jump through substantial hoops to get maps installed. Once everything was running correctly though it has proven reliable and I have not had a problem since not related to me upgrading to an unsupported ROM.
Navigation is nice if you are in a well covered area for data but copilot has advantages in spottier areas. I use both depending on my mood and neither is crap.

Are there 2010 maps out for Copilot yet? I've run the latest auto update but I'm still getting 2009 ones .

Could not disagree with you more, I have had a few problems with downloads and activations (I am a frequent rom swapper), and each time theyre customer support was prompt and courteous. Performing account resets or offering advice about side loading maps downloaded using the copilot desktop software (which downloads MUCH faster FYI).
But the real kicker is go off cell grid some time (like camping which i do alot). Google maps will fail on you as it requires constant connection to reload a map if you leave the map screen at any time, Copilot stores maps on the SD card allowing me to find that odd rural route to the highway and re-enable Google maps with all my layers. Its a real life saver off the grid.

I never had any issues with moving to Co-Pilot on the Nexus One (had it installed previously on my Hero). The only gripe I have with the software is that it doesn't disable the onboard speaker when routing audio to bluetooth end up with a echo, raised a ticket.. who knows if it will be fixed.

I've been using a modified 800x600 version of MotoNav that actually works very very well. I think it was yanked out of *gasp* a motorola.
The reg uses one of those 876x600 or something resolutions which will run but will cut off the bottom.

Wifitrak alternative?

One of my favorite apps for my iPod was Wifitrak.
It was a wifi access point scanner and auto-connector program. If left on and running it would scan for open access points, connect and then ping the internet someplace to verify a connection. Sadly Apple decided this ability was to much flexibilty for the world and pulled it from the market.
The beauty of Wifitrak though was that if you were traveling in a foreign country and just touring around all day you could turn on your iPod and usually by the time you had lunch it would have found several access points and all your email would have been refreshed. All while it was in your backpack.
So my question is.... does this sound like any program out there for the Androids OS?
I have found a few (several actually) wifi scanners in the marketplace but none of them seem to have the auto-connecting feature that allows me to leave my phone on yet unattended and have it attempting to refresh my email and chats while I am admiring the scenery.

Search the market. There are multiple wifi management apps.

GPS?

The ifixit teardown indicated the possibility of a GPS capable chip in the 7" model.
Anyone load a GPS app and see if you get any results?

Google Maps location doesn't work, and I have been unsuccessful sideloading any of the GPS apps I have available. All fail on install.

What about one of the free GPS apps on the Amazon app store, like:

Hmm well interestingly enough that one installed. It took a while, but it gave me a coordinate read out as well (see screenshot, I blanked out my location but you can see what I mean). I'm not familiar with that app, so I don't know if it uses Wifi at all for determining location. It does have an option for "do not launch if GPS is not enabled" though and that is set by default. Yet, it works. You have my wondering now, I'll keep playing with some of the other apps I'm a bit more familiar with and see if I can get them to install.

The OS build might not have adequate drivers to run the GPS. This might get fixed once we get a different ROM....someday.

I have google maps up and running, though I believe it is functioning off wifi location, the location is off a little. I installed GPS satellite app and it launches, gives me data but does not show that it is picking up any satellites.

I got GPS Test Plus installed and see the same. It doesn't find any satellites, but it is indeed finding my location based on Wifi. Acurracy of only about 200 feet. Think we are SOL for now.
UPDATE: I am playing with it more (it has a handy green light when it has GPS signal) that is yellow with WIFI off, and Green with it on. Seems to indicate it only uses Wifi for location.

even if gps is on the chip, maybe there's no antenna ?

So far no joy on getting any sort of GPS working. I bought a TomTom BlueTooth GPS module and it will not pair with the Fire HD. I get a message saying that the BlueTooth device is not compatible. None of the apps to make it work will even install.
Amazon apparently went all out in preventing people from using GPS. From what I understand the Nook will allow you to use a BlueTooth GPS.
FWIW, I tried using Google Maps on the way to and from work the last few days, and it is starting to get pretty good at finding my location via WiFi. Most of the time it was showing me within a block of my actual location, and sometimes it was actually tracking me accurately, even showing me driving up to an intersection and stopping right at the intersection. It seems to get better every time I take the same route.
I did discover that the Fire HD has a magnetic compass and accelerometer. But the compass is not very reliable.
I have a sneaky suspicion that there were some lawyers involved in these decisions...

Amazon took it really out of their way to lock down their tablets. They don't want people to use anything that doesn't rely on their services. Such as maps, either it be google, Bing, tomtom, anything not made by them. Amazon never activated voice search, the potential is there (apk in system files) but until they make it used through their ecosystem, KFHD will probably never see it. They even make it annoying to change the keyboard. Supposedly according too their website, BT only works with headphones. That is a complete limitation and annoyance.
As for GPS, I can see it somewhat irrelevant on a device that is wifi only and was omitted, though I do enjoy it on my N7. Something, I believe it was hootsuite would constantly annoy me about location services when I had it turned off, as they claimed it was turned off via twitter and had no options and I had it off in my twitter. Location services on the KFHD killed my battery for some unknown reason.

How so? With Maps you can download your entire city to use offline. If you start Navigation while online, and give it a couple of minutes to cache the info, it will take you all the way to your destination offline. I tested this on a 5 hour trip, and the audible turn-by-turn took me all the way to the destination, even though in some places the map itself was blank, and it didn't know the name of the street or exit. "Take the exit on the right" instead of "Take exit 6" It was even able to do some limited rerouting offline (which is something fairly new)
Besides, now I have a MiFi and a phone with a portable HotSpot. .On long trips, however, I turn off the MiFi while underway unless I need a major reroute, or need to find something. On a long trip a few weeks ago, my wife called from our tax accountant's office and needed some info from an old bank statement. I was out in the middle of nowhere in Alabama, and I though I was going to have to drive to Birmingham to find a Wells Fargo. So I fired up the MiFi, and asked my N7 "Google...where is the nearest Wells Fargo?" and it found one in a small town less than 10 minutes away and led me straight there.
Driving in Atlanta drives me insane. Now with the MiFi and Google Maps, I can see where the stop-and-go traffic jams are and get around them.

I REALLY wanted the GPS to work on the Fire HD because the pitiful speakers on the N7 aren't loud enough to hear turn-by-turn directions in heavy traffic or heavy rain, or while the radio is playing. And the washed out screen on the N7 makes it hard to make out the streets (white and yellow on off-white) They stand out much better on the Fire HD's screen.

Not everyone tethers data through their phone or device. Most cell phone plans still require additional payment services. I refuse to pay another $35-$40 a month just to tether data. If I want to use GPS, then I use my phone or my Garmin Nuvi, though I prefer google maps since they are mostly up to date.
Caching maps, ok, but you need to know exactly where you want to go. Without data, the GPS is useless unless you are using a strict GPS app to determine location only. Amazon took it out to reduce costs. While it's nice to have, it's irrelevant to their entertainment device, they don't want you to use maps anyways.

Would it be possible to make a hack to enable spp bluetooth profile on KFHD. Because the tomtom bluetooth gps receiver uses that profile.
I have to completely agree with drhanley i wish i could have at least bluetooth gps on the kindle fire hd.

Question Cloned? Mirrored? Hacked? Wtf?

Ok. First thought they got into my gmail, and since all my accounts are linked for recovery options stayed on the reset, uninstall/reinstall, factory reset hamster wheel for a while. Multiple companies customer service for hours, just to tell me it should be working, hang up on me, ask me something completely retarded that i might be doing as the issue, escalate me to another dept. All to no avail. So, i factory reset an old phone not hooked up, brand new gmail not linked to anything, set up google wifi (for 1st time) on it and loaded security camera apps on it. And they still got in and erased all my security videos. Got cameras to not reapond, notifications to not come through even though all says everything was fine. Settings not changed. Before they had been affecting ceetain aspects of apps from Google play. Made it so i couldnt download from there as well. Or if i tried something would get kicked out before i could finish said task. Even changed the "this device" in my google account. Spoofed mac & ips for known devices on wifi. Changed info in every account, still locked out of 3. 4 trips from internet company. 4 routers, 2 extender, modem/router combo, 7 cameras from 2 systems. End result? Me beating my head against the wall telling everyone, sorry but thats not what is happening on my phone/laptop, to evreyone thinking i am crazy and they are still in my stuff. Any thought yo how this is possible? P.s. 100% believe its my meth head neighbors but never would think them clever enough or would have the kind of money to spend on equipment to be able to pull something like this off. Please for the love of God someone help. This is way above my pay grade [email protected]
