Hey guys! I am using Fasty KK4 edition and I really really want HSPA+. I know for a fact that Fasty KJ3 is HSPA+ enabled and wanted to know if I could just flash the I897UCKJ3 modem while running KK4. If not, how do I enable HSPA+? Thanks in advance!
You sure can. Go to the modem thread and flash any of the modems that are labeled US att. they are all hsdpa not hsupa but some will give you better speed than others. Just gotta teeth them.

I don't think just flashing the modem will do it, you'd need to install Fasty's(or any other i9000 based ROM) in order to use the HSPA+(AT&T calls 4G). Which, the only change is the increased upload speeds(HSUPA)
I could be wrong about this though, but this is the impression I'm under

Small correction. HSPA (H in notification) Is the best speed sgs can achieve, HSDPA and HSUPA in I9000 roms. HDPA+ is something else. Faster than HSPA slower than LTE. Our phones can't achieve HSPA+

Yeah, some of the leaks had an H+ logo, but they never actually achieved. HSPA, which HSDPA and HSUPA is only achievable on i9000 modems. HSPA+ is unattainable by our phones, as it requires different hardware.
Awesome! Makes sense. So SGS gets HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA) even though the ROMs have a H+ symbol. That's interesting.

You are thinking of HSUPA, which as I understand it is not the same as HSPA+. It is all very convoluted and confusing so I hope someone will correct me if I get parts of it wrong, but here is my understanding:
AT&T uses both UMTS and HSPA (which consists of HSDPA for download and HSUPA for upload) for it's 3G networks. HSPA is faster, but both are considered 3G.
I believe the only AT&T phone that supports both HSDPA and HSUPA is the iPhone 4. All i897-based ROMs for the Captivate (including Fasty) support HSDPA but not HSUPA.
All i9000-based ROMs do support HSUPA and HSDPA. HSUPA, while only speeding up uploads, also decreases latency so it makes the network faster overall. The trade-off is that i9000 modems can't utilize the audience chip, so you lose hardware-noise cancelling.
AT&T uses both LTE and HSPA+ and calls them both 4G, but HSPA+ and HSUPA are not the same thing. To the best of my knowledge, you cannot get HSPA+ on any captivate ROM.
To summarize for the OP, Fasty may show an "H" in the status bar, but it's not HSPA+. It just means you are connected to an HSPA-capable tower (and even then, you are only using HSDPA). The Captivate had HSDPA built in and ready for normal use. However, the captivate has the hardware capability for HSUPA, but apparently AT&T disabled it for marketing reasons (to promote the iPhone over it, at least that's just what I've heard). The above post is 100% correct in stating that you can use HSUPA if you have an i9000-based modem and a kernel that allows it, at the loss of hardware noise cancelling. The captivate's hardware cannot support HSPA+, much less LTE. So yes, HSUPA works, but it only improves upload speeds.
But if you want faster internet, I saw a thread on one of the captivate forums where the user told AT&T they acquired a 4G Infuse (which was a lie), and wanted to add 4G to their data plan. Then they modified the build.prop and APNs and were able to increase their network speed

It is physically impossible to connect to HSPA+ on a Captivate. It doesn't support the bands, nor will the hardware allow it. He was only getting about 2.5-2.8mbps which is 3G, and what I got on stock Froyo. Technically speaking, our phones support HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps, while HSPA+ on the Infuse 4G is HSDPA 21 Mbps, HSUPA 3.6 Mbps. AT&T can also tell what phone you have based on your IMEI, which he changed on his Captivate (which is a felony). The build.prop edits may increase speeds, but adding 4G won't, he also said he connected to "H" which, once again, isn't 4G it is regular old HSPA (3G upload and download).
Just flash an i9000 rom, kernel, and modem, and you can get much faster download and upload speeds. I am able to achieve almost 6 Mbps on my Captivate.

Your numbers on the Inspire are a little off. HSDPA=14.4 mbps, HSUPA=5.76 mbps, not your quoted numbers.
As for the Captivate, I've never saw or heard anyone getting more than 6mbps. But 5+ is pretty good. My personal best is about 4.
I have gotten 5.5 down and 4 up before, but that is the best I have ever gotten! That was along time ago and I have flashed and lost the data, but I promise I got!

...The guy in the guide, that modded is IMEI, said he had an INFUSE 4G not an INSPIRE.
Here:
Googled and found a Infuse IMEI. Called AT&T. Told them I acquired a new Infuse 4G and would like to add it to my service while also havig the faster 4G speeds on my unlimited data plan. Not a problem, Gave them the IMEI. Set it up and asked them to confirm the SOC code for me, HSDPPB. Good to go.

The h is for hsdpa which does have faster download speed. Flashing an i9000 rom allows that frequency.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine.

HSDPA is not 3G, it is 3.5G which would be the reason we see an H. THe link you posted even states HSUPA is 3G...so I would say you have your info backwards. Even on the phone with an I9000 ROM it says HSDPA for mobile network type.

HSUPA is what gets unlocked by using an i9000 modem....as in the UPLOAD speed. it increases, just try it.
from what i understand, the H doesnt mean SQUAT. in the rest of the world the H is their standard network, akin to what we have that ATT calls 3g (only not gimped by those iphone loving [email protected]$%*!&)....its a png file in the framework, it could be changed to F if so desired....its a meaningless icon

Hell maybe I do...I am just going back to all the arguments and stuff I have read that we are enabling HSDPA by use of the I9000 Rom. I am not always sure with this kind of stuff but my bad if what I posted and the way I interpret it are not correct. And I couldn't get my ninja edit in fast enough haha.

Yep, downloads are gtg...it's the upload. It's one feature, for me at least, that I'm not too worried about. However, I may decide to become a Youtube freak and want to upload tons of videos...I should at least have the option to do so efficiently given the hardware in this phone is capable of it. This IS a perfect example of where AT&T should be blamed for something.

Saying 3G and HSDPA are one in the same is semantically incorrect, but practically speaking, it's close to correct. It's more like 3G with a bit of a boost. One difference is the transport layer, HS-DSCH. So, it's 3G, further evolved.

Umts is 3g. Hsdpa is 3.5g for download speeds. Hsupa is 3.5g for upload speeds.
Att does not allow any of its phones to display anything but edge and 3g indicators by the signal bars. The 3g can actually means umts, hsdpa, or hsupa (on phones that support it). The i9000 based roms display the indicator more correctly. 3g means umts only. 'H' means hsdpa or hsupa. This is how the symbols are displayed on every other network.
Edit: also, att does allow hsdpa on stock captivates. It only stops hsupa.

Well, this is my understanding exactly. Perhaps you put it in a more articulate fashion; it's what I meant by my post, albeit with less technical details.

So, the answer, OP, is the H means you now have faster upload capability. In practical terms, an H on a Captivate means you have HSUPA; you always had HSDPA.
Oh, and technically, they are all UMTS.
It will still display the H even if you are only in a hsdpa area without hsupa, however.
Actually hsupa allows for a faster download as well during testing. How idk. But speed test went from 4mb to 6mb when switching types.

It improves download speeds because most IP communications are TCP or session based, meaning there is an acknowledgement sent back to verify receipt of packets. The sender has to wait for the acknowledgements before sending more data, therefore if the upload portion is significantly slower (due to higher latency or lower bandwidth) the acknowledgements take longer and the overall transmission speed is decreased.
I have seen a dramatic increase in over all performance when using apps that rely on a data connection (Android Market, Google Maps) when using HSUPA vs. HSDPA. The overall bandwidth or download speed may or may not be higher but responsiveness is much improved.

I have H+ or EDGE but I don't get a 4G indicator in 4G areas?
Am I missing out on the 4G speeds due to the modem I am using?
Do I need to install a different modem to get the 4G speeds?

A 4G indicator as seen on many of the newer phones usually indicates a connection to an actual 4G LTE connection which would be what is considered "real 4G." The Infuse doesn't support LTE, but supports HSPA+ a.k.a H+ which is 21 Mbps max download speeds as opposed to the 7.2 max on the Captivate. It is essentially a step between HSPA and LTE, hence HSPA+.

By wireless companies only bumping up to HSPA+ and calling it "4g" the captivate is capable of "4g".
So I'm certain you all have heard about the AT&T, Tmobile merger that's coming along. Assuming that it gets approved, I'll suddenly have 3g and 4g available in my area (finally!) since Tmobile is the only one that currently supports it in our area.
My question is - will the Captivate function on the T-mobile tower spectrum for 3g and 4g data?
Please research as the answer is no. The captivate does not have any bands that work on T-Mobile. The virbrant does have bands that work on att.

How unfair! My boyfriend has the vibrant, and one of his coworkers has the new Galaxy 4g. Well, I hope they somehow tweak it so that the towers broadcast on the AT&T bands as well, else that will really stink, and provides no benefit for AT&T customers.
I saw something on Gizmodo saying that 3G phones with T-Mobile bands will no longer work on the new combined network after integration is complete. That leaves only AT&T 3G devices and whatever 4G LTE devices are around by then. So it sounds like towers will be broadcasting only AT&T frequencies.
My apologies if this information is inaccurate in any way.

I should restate what I said. The phone will work. It just won't have 3G speeds if you are using data. The Vibrant however still works on AT&T 3G towers. I don't know how or if they will actually disable bands as mentioned in a previous posters link to Gizmodo. Sorry for not being more clear in my original post.

I guess we'll just have to see - it makes sense that AT&T would convert the towers, just as they are currently they won't work. So either way in my case and my boyfriend's case we'll have to wait till our area is integrated and see what happens.

This thread is from last year before we really had a lot of mods to our phones. So maybe more information has been discovered?
Now we are flashing international ROMs and such and swapping modems as we like.
It seems odd that the Vibrant would be able to work on the ATT 3G frequencies but the Captivate would have been manufactured differently. And the I9000? One would think it would be capable of all the bands?
I do have both ATT and TMO sim cards with data on both plans. However, I only get Edge in my Captivate with the TMO sim inserted.

Cappy has different radio HARDWARE. Vibrant will get certain Att 3G band but the chances of you having correct band is slim since its older and slower 3G.

This phone is not LTE - it is GSM/UMTS with HSDPA up to 14.4MBps and HSUPA up to 5.76Mbps, which in no way is slow, but much slower than what LTE can deliver. Blame carriers for the confusion - they were pushing for this marketing gimmick.

It is a great phone. Even without the "true 4G" it is a good phone. I don't see LTE being a nessecity within the next 12 months, at least for me. The current HSPA+ speeds are more than reasonable. I will be picking up one of these puppies to replace my Milestone/Droid2 Global as soon as I figure a way around Bell. Hate the fact Bell got it instead Rogers/Telus, but at least it was made available in Canada unlike Milestone 2 for example.

Yup - you got it right.
I have had a galaxy s3 mini since release, imported it from Europe and notice that when the phone is using edge (E) it has very slow speeds from 50-150 kbps , if i put the sim card into a galaxy 1 speeds are around 1000kbps. When i put it in wcdma only the h speeds are fine.
Anyone use this phone in canada on rogers?
Is rogers able to limit speed on non rogers phones ?
Any ideas about flashign radio or anything?

Well i am neither in canada nor on rogers but my opinion is that;
They "could" limit your speed as they can identify your device, but to be honest i doubt they would do that, its not in their interest, its not as though it could have adverse effects on their network
EDGE speeds are typically quite low (around the speeds you stated) so i don't see a problem, just don't use EDGE if you don't have to

I suspect my galaxy is actually going into hsdpa 850mhz and my phone is missing 850mhz hsdpa and has 900 hsdpa which is causing the problem as its not accessing the 850 hsdpa. At home my wcdma coverage is not great.
I guess im going to have to see if I can change or enable my phone for 850 hsdpa.

I've tried to help others with the same problem, but unfortinatly without success. I'ts hardware based.
That's why there's also a i8190L, and for US a SCH-T599.
