I was using a wifi tether on my phone running PCForce's CM7 and my phone restarted (it was connected to my PC via USB) and when it came back on it said "Charging 0%" and whenever I unplug it it switches off, never seen this before but it seems, to me, like the battery has been fried anyone think the same.
I also have a spare battery that works fine, which also tells me that it is some problem with the battery, and running a wifi tether can heat things up a bit which brought me to that conclusion.
Anyone wanna throw any ideas on if its possible to fix it, I am now using the battery that came with the phone but it has a crack near the contacts which doesn't fill me with confidence.

try with 600 mHz it solved the problem for me
With mobile data and Wifi tethering enabled, my phone can get up to 52 degrees celsius in some cases without charging. I usually turn the phone off and take out the battery for a few minutes for it to cool down. I guess a temperature that high is caused by overclocking. I'm not sure if its damaging or not but I do prevent progression of operations in that temperature.
I also have a crack on the battery. Had it for a few months now and no problems so far
How 'cracked' is it?

Its only about half a centemeter long, and it only seems to be affecting the case, but got a replacement last year (was the repacement that got fried)
Havent tried it with andreas's advice yet but I will

I don't think the crack will be that much of a problem. If you want, you could take it to someone experienced just to be sure.

Also setting to 600MHz didn't help, guess i'm stuck with my stock one for now.

I have crack to, but battery go to 100. Btw, i glue mine with tape.

well it's look like the rom's fault, change rom maybe work
My battery cracked as well, but it has been dropped a few times...
It is a real shame because my previous LG phone was the LG Viewty and that was an amazingly well built phone. Cost ~£100 and came with an amazing camera and 3G front facing camera too. Shame it didn't have android. So I don't know why LG decided to go really cheap on the build qualities - you'd think having cracked batteries would have come up in their design tests but they probably didn't care...
I got the same trouble...

Im not sure if this question has been answered but i could not find the answer to my question and i really need an answer so sorry if this is already posted.
First off i have a G1 (Dream) and have rooted it. Ive been flashing roms for a while first starting with 1.6 and Heros and now have HTCClays Superbad. Recently i have noticed that the phone just shuts off suddenly when im not hooked to the charger and im either streaming video or even just using apps. Im not sure if its the battery or the phone. Ill charge the phone to FULL then either use apps or use the brower to view video or even Skyfire and the phone wil shut off. I restart it the battery is either half what it was prior or it will start blinking red. I take the battery out and put it back in and the battery is back to green, if i open up an app itll run for like 2 minutse then the phone shuts off again. I have no clue whats going on here because ive been flashing roms the same way since the first rom i flashed which was Fasttest. Could it be the partition im using? Could it be the rom? Battery? Does anyone know whats going on here? Any help would be so appreciated!

Ive never used a tether app before. I dont even know how lol. And i forgot to mention that when the phone shuts off and i restart i get the red blinker and a shut off then when i plug the phone back into the charge its at 75%, wth? It started doing this just recently.
you might try to drain the battery all the way down and then recharge it to get it to top shape...
if you take the battery out its not fat or bulging is it?

I missed the fat bat
but OC kernels seem to be the root of random shutdowns, reboots and freezes
and it could be what ran the battery out of spec
Its an over-charging thing...Ive seen it done to two g1s so far..Ive had mine since day one and charge it overnight almost every night. So Im not too sure of what over charging is... thats ateast 500 charges at 5-7 hours plus whatever I charge on the side at work or heavy days
Its the battery....
The same thing was wrong with mine
My battery was "swollen" and I just got another one off craigslist and it works perfectly fine
Its usually cuz you use it a lot while its charging...

Thanks junkdruggler. So ok im a little confused with your last quote, so you said its an over charging thing but then you said youre not sure what over charging is...sorry that was just a little confusing. Yeah im not sure how much charging or use while charging is a bad thing... like i said I charge my phone overnight, every night. on a day like today I will watch a movie on the way to work then play music til my phone dies and charge it on the way home... so today my phone will get two charges.. and this happens alot. I have no drain issues or a "fat batt"
My buddies sit on 3g with wifi tether on while charging off their usb port for hours on end.. and the bloat their batteries.. I dont know if its the heat or what..

Thanks alot man! This really helped, i ordered a new battery from buy.com. You can do all that on your phone? And you have a G1? How long have you had the battery in it? Do you have one of those extended batts? ANd i will say that i do use the phone while hooked to the charger a lot like using the blutooth. i def cannot watch a movie on my G1. I might just wait till my contract ends in dec to switch from tmobile to Att or something i thought tmobile would be the king of android phones but its been really disappointing to see all the good phones go to wack Verizon (the network i switched from).

Hi Firerat!
I got this problem too, the phone keep reboots, shutdowns and freezes randomly, more and more often.
I tried many ways: flash another ROM, change battery (2300mAh on ebay and tried my friend's HTC Rogers Dreambattery also), wipe all.... but nothing help.
I almost gave up. But when I search in this forum, I found your post.
What is OC kernels? Can you please help me solve this problem?
Thanks in advance.

OC = OverClocked
if the ROMs you are using are running the CPU out of spec it is probably that which is causing the issues
you can use an app called SetCPU, this will allow you to set the CPU frequencies
default 'stock' frequencies are
245 - 384
the CPU is actually rated 528 ( I believe it was underclocked due to battery issues, but things have moved on since then, so 528 is a stable max )
OK kernels can have a range of 122 - as much as 600+,
use the auto detect feature of SetCPU and use the slider to narrow the range
160 - 575 seems to be stable
160 - 528 should be fine
Many people fall into a trap of setting a very low narrow range in a sleep profile, believing this will save battery, which it will but it will 'lag' coming out of sleep.
Personally I have the sleep profile 160 - 528
when in sleep it will underclock ( as its doing nothing ) but if I wake it ( or call comes in ) I won't suffer lag while SetCPU waits to change profiles ( it will just scale up to the max if needed )
PS SetCPU is available from the market, just $0.99, but the dev has made it freely available on XDA
so give it a try and go for the market donate if you like it/ find it usefull
Hi everyone, I need help finding out what is wrong with my Hero before I throw it out the window!!! I am having HORRIBLE battery life. I can unplug it and it's dead within 30 minutes at times. I am running the latest CyanogenMod 7 (GingerBread) 2.3 on the C Spire (Cellular South) network. I have recalibrate my battery to see if it would help but no change. I have also changed chargers but no change. I have checked to see if there is an app draining it but nothing is draining it no more then usual. This has been going on for weeks and when it started happening I had not changed anything on my phone. It just started happening out of the blue. Now I am having bigger problems out of it now that it is having trouble even getting a charge. For instance, when I plug it in sometimes it will charge and sometimes it won't. Sometimes it will start charging then stop. Like I said, I have changed chargers so I know it isn't a bad charger. Also the biggest problem now is that when I do get it to charge, it won't charge past 86%. It will stay there til I unplug it then it will drain down to 60% within 10-15 minutes, so now I can't even recalibrate the battery now to see if it will help. I thought well maybe my battery is bad but when I check the battery health in the settings it says Good. I do not have another battery to test it against. I also have freezing problems. Somethings it will freeze up and will not unfreeze. I will have to eventually take out the battery and reboot it. Then if I don't let it set for a little bit after I reboot it and I touch it during that time, then it will freeze again and I have to reboot it again. I really LOVE my phone, I have had it for a little over a year now! I have never had any problems like this out of it! PLEASE HELP ME!!! THIS PHONE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY NOW!!!! THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!
Anyone? PLEASE!
I just tried my sis in law's battery and no change. She has an HTC Hero also.
$5 on Amazon
Or
After a complete drain, Charge while its off overnight then turn on but into recovery so u can erase battery stats. Then reboot
Either way I'd still spend the $5 and u can probably find free shipping for black Friday.
U can also try a ROM called hero deck without adding anything. This ROM rocks on the battery life. Then for giggles put it in airplane mode with wifi off to see if it drains...
Good luck
V's CDMA Hero
It will not charge while it is off, that is another problem I'm having.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
It is not the battery cause I put my battery in my sis in law's phone and she played on it forever and the battery did not drain and it also charged fast. I put her battery in my phone and it drained fast and would hardly charge, just like my battery does in my phone. So it is not a battery problem, it has something to do with my phone. BUT WHAT?!?!
Just to rule out if something didn't went wrong during flash of CM7. Try a different ROM and see if it same issue.
I did, I tried the ROM vidaljs suggested. Still draining my battery!
What charger ru using?
Is it different than ur sisters charger. That could be the problem.
I use a blackberry charger that has the same power output. So verify that the wires are not damaged and if it's not the hero charger then verify the proper power output.
V's CDMA Hero
I have used HTC charger, Blackberry charger, and Garmin GPS charger all with the some result, slow to no charge. The main problem is it draining too fast. Last night I unplugged my phone, which was on 40%, walked next door to my sis and bro in law's house, which is about 100 ft away, when I walked in their house it was on 11%!
Any suggestions?
Well if u visually look into the female plug on phone.. does it look damaged?
If not perhaps it may just be damaged in another way.
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
It looks fine. I had a Hero before this one and the charger port did break but this one looks ok!
Well I have kinda solved my problem! I have the cable to my charger pulled tight and taped to the side of it and it is charging now, but it take literally all day and all night for it to get a full charge! It still drains FAST when unplugged! This still does not explain the fast battery drain and how it still won't charge on other chargers that I know work! Oh well, C Spire has a Holiday Sale going and I can get a Samsung Galaxy S for FREE, plus my $65 replacement fee since I have only completed 20 months of my 24 months! So $65 for a Samsung Galaxy S sounds like a good deal to me!!! This might be one of my Christmas presents from my hubby! I might get him one too! Gonna miss my Hero though! Good times, good times!!!
Right on.... ur issue still bugs me when j think about... but a new phone compared to the hero is awesome. I got the nexus S 4g last week for free except for taxes and activation and it is awesome.
So the galaxy does sound like a great plan and gift
Good luck

Hi guys,
I have an incredible S rooted and running on Android Revolution HD 2.20 . Had that ROM for a month without any problems until today I charge my phone while using my YooBao (11200mAh) external charger , and it told me that my phone consumes more power than the charge, please close all unused applications.
I was like totally lost. I had that charger for almost half a year and it worked perfectly on my device without any problems.
Now the problem that I'm experiencing is that my phone discharges faster than it charges. and that totally sucks. I need some advice,
Could it be my battery faulty or was it the charging port?
My thoughts are your "YooBao" has ruined either your battery or the phone itself.
Hopefully it's just the battery..
That's usually why phone manufacturers ask you to use their products in comparison to other "suppliers"
Update:
I flashed Nik's v4.5 over my ARHD and I tested it by leaving it to charge until 63%.
Feeling glad that at least it's charging up to 63% , I concluded that my port isn't damaged although I wasn't able to charge using my external charger. Pretty pissed.
I went up to my phone and used it while it was charging . To my horror , the 63% dropped to 61% while I was using and STILL CHARGING . WTF?
Now i'm gonna wipe all my apps and do a clean flash and no titanium backups for me .
God.. help
Did you have gps WiFi or large processes running in the background? It could easily do it.

Well , initially I thought it was , until I wiped my phone and didn't restore my apps and I'm sure it wasnt the processes that are causing this **** . Charge my phone overnight and my phone stops charging , woke up to find that my phone is only at 50% charge and the percentage drops super quickly.
Can anyone tell me whether the charging port or the battery is covered under warranty if it's within my warranty period?
Any advice whether I should get an Ankers' battery or should I purchase another original battery that cost me SGD$68?
Couple of things you could have a look at. Check in your battery menu that your phone is on AC charge mode. Also install current widget to see how many mA your phone is drawing while in use and to check the difference when its on charge. The original charger supplies around 900mA to the phone @ around 10%.

After a day of test.
Finally I got tired of it and I did a simple test to really test whether my battery is draining too much or not.
I plugged in my phone yesterday night to charge at the AC adapter, surprisingly it was charged to 100% straight with no problems.
I was tired alrd and I used an iPhone 3G as a spare phone. Throughout the day I carried 2 phones out and I noticed something:
At the end of the day, my InCs still had 78%. (WiFi 3G off) .
It means that the draining of my battery is not as bad as it seems. The real problem is that I am unable to charge properly.
When im charging at 61% , I use the phone when it's charging, the percentage can drop to 58% (which is not possible as my GPS is not on) .
So advice people:
Should I?
1) Get a replacement battery,
2) Bring to the service centre (No warranty left and pay)
Do you think:
1) Port problem
2) battery problems.

It's for me a usage problem, got the same message too. You're running too much apps at once and never use a taskkiller. You also had GPS WiFi and Mobile Network on and maybe at full brightness. Close apps, I think you need not GPS while charging and if you have a WiFi connection mobile network isnt to be on.

I just (10 min ago) went to check the time on my phone, and when I grabbed it, it was extremely hot. When I turned it over (I put it face down at night so the notification led doesn't bug me) it was showing the battery charging screen except it was a question mark. The phone was plugged in since 10 pm (its 5 am now) and when it had cooled down enough I turned it back on and it said I only had 50%, even though it had been charging all night. Has anyone else had similar overheating issues, and should I return it for a new phone?
Sent from my XT894 using xda premium
Tried a hard reset? If ao, return the phone is what I would do. No way its supposed to drain that quick or heat up. Charging, navigating and playing music over BT and my phone is warm, not hot.
Had a similar issue about 3 weeks ago. Wasn't plugged in charging though. It was just sitting in my pocket. I thought it felt warm against my leg so I pulled it out and the phone was super hot! Turned the phone off immediately, let it cool down, and it hasn't done it since.

You said there was a battery with a question mark. Was your phone booted up at this point, or were you in the 'battery charging mode'?
Sounds like the phone overheated, which can sometimes happen. You could try to get a replacement, but unless it happens consistently they might give you trouble trying to return it.
The annoying thing is, they say our batteries aren't supposed to be removed. It was nice being able to swap in a spare when my wife was done with her A855 moto Droid and same with having a "spare" incredible...
Anyone know the reason they made ours not come out?
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA
It is my understanding that they used a special type of battery to get it so thin. The downside to this special type of battery is that they are easily bendable, but explode when bent
As a result, they don't want anybody touching the battery and exploding themselves.
Somebody who is more knowledgeable in battery tech could probably give a better explanation.
Couple weeks ago I was using the GPS and had the phone on the Motorola cardock while plugged in (with a Verizon charger) to the car. Took the phone off to make a call and I literally couldn't touch it. I kept it on the side and opened the battery doctor app, told me the battery was 58C. Immediately pulled aside and turned off my phone. Stupid phone has the locked battery door also so I couldn't pull it off to let the battery cool faster. Worst battery door design by Motorola.

Hey guys, I used this search function, together with Google, but I can't seem to find any information, I know there was a thread like that, but I can't find it... So sorry if someone is annoyed ^^
(32GB 3G)
So I got my nexus 7 for a few weeks now, and four days ago it started to smell burned while charging... After this smell, battery life seems weird.. MAX. Stats are a few hours standby time (10) (lost 1% per hour with everything turned off) and 3-4 hours screen time until its discharged.. Before that, max stats were 1 day and 6-7 screen on time...
While charging, I am now smelling like a dog around my tablet and charger (which scares some people around me) but it doesn't smell anymore, and its charging properly.
So I'm not sure, if it REALLY is broken, or its just something I'm telling myself .. Because to be honest, if the battery would be screwed it should smell again and should charge like hell, or slow as a snail.., but charging is fine, like day one..,
I'm searching for people who had a smelling nexus 7 and what they've done.., and what consequences they had...
Thank you in advance
P.S.:To help myself, I'll charge it full (again) and make a MANUAL (fastboot) factory reset, maybe this helps... And also I can say it can't be an app, because I use the same I used when I bought it... So ^^

Where did you get the device from? It may be worth just swapping it if you purchased from the Play Store.

Got it from Media Markt, but its an act to get there, (for me) since I got no car ^^ its insured also... So I'll get a replacement for sure, but maybe I don't have to... I had a lot devices which smelled weird once but worked for years... So, maybe it just sucked too much power once.. The problem is, I can't live without this tablet so maybe I'll call MM and ask if they have one in stock to get.. But again, maybe I don't have to.. That's why I'm searching "smelling" people

You must have some Labrador or Blood Hound in your DNA to be able to smell your devices charging lol.
On a serious note, have you tried watching the temps of the CPU and battery while its charging?

Yup, everything was normal.. This is what scares me I did a factory reset now... After setting everything up, (open all installed apps, go through settings, sync, update apps, setting the phone up in general, one reboot), I lost 2%, which is average ^^ I'm testing now.. But its confusing
Edit: and while charging, it didn't smell... This is weird...

Going by your description of the problem, I would be leaning towards strongly suspecting that a component has (or is in the process of) burning out.
Does your Nexus smell when you charge it on either a different charger or PC USB port? If not then it may just be the charger is going bad - which in the big picture is no biggie (better the charger than the Nexus)
If on the other hand, the Nexus smells regardless of where you charge it, I would be seriously considering a warranty claim fairly soon. It may have been a freak occurance, but ultimately it has the potential to have drastically reduced the overall lifespan of your device - even if absolute failure has not occured.
Obviously it's your call buddy, but it shouldn't have happened in the first instance, and i'd be a bit paranoid that it could be a sign of worse to come.

The charger was my second thought.. I don't trust these things ^^
Right after this smell accident I unplugged it, and now I'm using a new socket to charge on. No smelling on laptop and the new socket... But if the old socket was the reason, then maybe when I use it the next time it will go up in flames, or my nexus does.. I'm going to watch out the next days, if any weird behavior is going on I'm going to replace it... But one thing I won't do: charge it overnight
I'm going to check the old socket.. But I need to go into my room, I don't want others to see me smelling lol
Edit: no burned smell...

Sooo, a little info for you and me.
After the full wipe yesterday, I'm on 28% left, with 24h standby, and 5h 48m display time, which is normal for me.. So it seems that the battery is fine (again?)
I'm going to charge it now, and as always, I'm running around the socket, charger and tablet.. I'll edit the post with the info after the full charge..
EDIT: no smelling after & while charging..
I assume it really was the socket I charged on, which I now toss into the trash..
Thanks to everyone who answered
And if I get weird behavior I'll send it in ^^
