My experience with android-wifi-tether went from PURE AWESOMENESS under the 4G LTE network to complete crap under the 3G network. However, I found a solution that will work for now.
It turns out that the Gingerbread operating system removes the MSS clamping feature in the wifi tether program. Since EVDO networks are different from LTE networks, they both use different MTU values. It appears that once you leave the LTE network while tethering, the MTU doesn't change automatically within wifi tether with the LG Revolution phone. So here's the solution for those who are traveling in a EVDO network with the Revo.
Conditions:
On EVDO network
Using gingervolt 1.3
Using Windows 7 Professional PC (64bit)
Using this fix in Tulare County, CA (No LTE here yet)
Problem:
android-wifi-tether 3.1 BETA11 doesn't tether properly under EVDO network
What Works:
Pinging
What doesn't work:
Everything else (http, ftp, etc...)
Solution Attempts:
wipe phone - failed
Working Solution:
Change MTU settings with the PC's wifi card
Instructions:
Change your MTU settings of your WIFI card to 1024 while tethering
Run "cmd" as a administrator
Run "netsh"
Then enter this "interface"
then "ipv4"
then "set subinterface "Wireless Network Connection" mtu=1024 store=persistent"
Note: Make sure you have the correct name of the card. Mine was "Wireless Network Connection" since I only have one WIFI card on my laptop. You can check by going to the "Change Adapter settings" window inside "Network and Sharing Center"
Once you are done tethering, return the MTU to 1500 with the same method or else your wifi card will not be able to talk to anything else.
Enjoy!
Actually, I haven't had any issues with 3g, 4g, wifi, hotspot, etc with MTU settings using MTU=1458.
Set Windows or Linux (Have not tested MacOS) to that and you shouldn't have any issues. I never change them, even when going to a standard WiFi Access Point.
Here's a great site (basically explaining your process) showing the procedure in Windows 7 that might help you or others out that I found a while back when I had issues:

I just tried 1458. Some websites work but response from the same websites were slow in Tulare County, CA
You should have posted/checked this under Themes and Apps section.. there are multiple threads on tethering already.

dnsmasq arguments are hard-coded into the built-in android wifi tethering, but there is a way around this, which means automatically pushing the MTU to connecting devices via dnsmasq

Ok, so I've searched and found a million articles about tethering and that is the exact opposite that I would like to do.
My 3G prices are crazy and I don't have a data bundle. At home I have a Netgear WiFi ADSL router. My mission is to have my phone use the DSL internet through WiFi.
I am running Manup's 2.1 v1.5 rom. Works like a dream (thanks btw).
I go to Settings > Wireless & Networks > WiFi settings. WiFi is on.
There are two check boxes "Wi-Fi" and "Network notification", both are ticked.
Below "Wi-Fi" (in tiny font) it says "Connecting..." for a few seconds, then "Disconnected".
I have found my router's network and added it. It asked for the WEP key and the network is "Remembered". When I select it, it shows Excellent signal, WEP security and 3 options: Connect, Forget and Cancel. If I click connect, it does nothing.
I have the NetCounter app and yet no (0) data has traveled through wifi, only Cell (3G). Tried browser and market..
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help me out with this.
My WiFi is working because I have a PC down stairs that is on the network through WiFi.
Thanks,
Dave
Oh, in my router's admin, in "Attached Devices", it only shows the two PCs and not the phone.. I have messed around with static ip on the phone a bit, but no luck.
To disable the 3G go to Wireless Controls -> Mobile Networks -> Only use 2G Networks (Thats on 1.6, should be the same on 2.1, but cant remember exactly...)
To connect to Wifi, reset the router and try again...that worked for me
EDIT: There are some widgets on the markets that toggle 3G/EDGE, wich is also usefull in your case...
Thanks, but disabling 3G only limits it to Edge/GPRS, its still using the mobile service provider's internet. I've got an app for that.
I tried resetting the router, but the phone doesn't want to connect to the network. Are you using any security? I am using 128 bit WEP encryption. I will mess around with that a bit, but cant see why it should cause any trouble.
I made the network "Open" (no WEP etc), still no connection. I tried using static IP, but nothing.
I have read a lot about people having problems with WiFi and their routers.
I also read that some mimo technoly that certain routers have causes problems. I have a Netgear DG834PN router.
Back to search I go...
Hi All,
I am having issues when trying to connect to my work VPN. I need VPN access in order to check my work email and browse an internal website.
Now, the VPN always connects, either on 3G (in UK) and wifi.
However, even if it says "connected", I am not able to download emails orbrowse the intranet unless when connected to my home wifi and sometimes on mobile internet.
If connected through other wifi networks (recently tried on a hotel free wifi, in the states and on a private home network, in Croatia), the connection itself seems to go through some sort of bottleneck, and no emails or browsing is then available.
I am blaming the phone itself, since my colleague had no problems whatsoever on his iPhone.
I am on Galaxy Note, non rooted, Vodafone UK.
Please help, this issue is making my Galaxy Note almost useless.

just FYI I'm also on UK Vodafone and I can connect fine with openVPN to my home network ... tested on 2G,3G/H+ and also on various public & private WiFi networks - always connects fine, only issue I have is that my server .ovpn tells the phone to use my home router as it's default gateway (so that I can browse securely on public wifi). This doesn't work out of the box - I need to use the openVPN app's "fix DNS" option.

errr ... I'm an android noob, but AFAIK you need root for openVPN to work? I never tried running openVPN on my note BEFORE I rooted it, but anything I've ever read says root is required?

What APN do you use?
I have to switch everytime to something called MyLan to connect over 3G.
I am using the stock VPN client, did not adventure myself into OpenVPN. Would that work with an encrypted VPN?
Ah, sorry - I somehow managed to read the thread title "[Q] VPN issues" as "OpenVPN issues" .. case of my eyes seeing what they wanted to rather than than what was actually there. You are of course right, the stock VPN options don't need root (and of course openVPN client will only work to talk to an openVPN server).
I did set up a PPTP server on my WinXP home machine and tested that with the note's inbuilt PPTP VPN client - it worked OK although I needed to turn off encryption, and I didn't do anything with it beyond just connecting as I was only dong it out of interest.
re. the APN - I don't actually know where to see that on the note (noob, as I said!) - when I do settings->wireless & network-> mobile networks, which claims to allow setting APN's, there is no info or settings re. the APN other than the "network mode" and "network operators" items, neither of which seem to show the APN used for vodafone data access.
Anyway, sorry for the bum steer, hope you get it sorted

Oh, never mind
Under mobile networks you have to go under Access Point Names, but most likely you will only have one APN, which is the regular from Vodafone.
So most likely is the encryption causing problems?
D'oh ... I thought that was a heading, didn't realise it was a clickable item! my APN is wap.vodafone.co.uk (APN type is "internet+mms").
IDK if encryption is anything to do with your issues ... I doubt it if you can consistantly connect from home wifi and sometimes from 3G - if encryption were the problem I'd imagine it would consistantly connect (or not) rather than be variable.
Maybe worth trying to ping your internal mail/intranet servers when connected and then talking to your work IT guys in case there are firewall/routing settings that you are somehow falling foul of?
Yes we are doing that, however that fact that iPhones can connect really makes me wonder!
Thread Moved To Q&A
This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A Section
there are lots of third party vpn tools and free available you can use those
Wilsonj,
Can you please suggest one third party vpn tools that works well on PPTP, with encryption?
I am not looking at OpenVPN, since it doesn't suit my needs.
Thanks!
Hi, I have not been able to find much info on getting this to work, I'm in New Zealand. My Partners Phone will not connect to mine it tries but seems to fail at getting the IP address, I am using the stock App, same problem with PDAnet+
Things I have Discovered/tried, through searching here and googling:
The TBH Radio Hack is not For GSM.
I have setup an APN with Type "dun" still no good
Seems there are some people in Europe and Australia with it working?
Can any one tell me if this can be made to work? if so how?
Is there a connection log file etc. that may tell me what is going wrong?
Perhaps I have setup the APN incorrectly...
Thanks.

I can tether on gsm fine. Just have dun in the apn, the stock app seems to have dhcp issues, try 'wifi tether for root' from the market if rooted. You can also try setting the ip manually on the client device if not rooted using the stock app.
I think the default gateway is 192.168.42.1 I could be wrong. You can change this in stock app. An example for a config would be:
Ip- 192.168.42.100
Subnet- 255.255.255.0
Gateway- 192.168.42.1
Dns1- 8.8.8.8
Dns2- 8.8.4.4
The 42 may be different, 1 is default for most wireless routers, 0 is default for wired ones, and 2 is default for wifi tether for root.
A note about wifi tether for root, gateway is 192.168.2.254 instead of 2.1.
In android, to set manually, go to wifi setting > press menu button > advanced > check static ip > set as required using example as guide > turn on wifi and connect. Ensure data works, if not verify settings.

Hi, thanks for your reply, tried this program and still wont stay connected. I was Pinging the gateway during one of the connection attempts and got back 3 good pings then it just disconnects.
But I suspect that the problem is peculiar to my phone. as I have two other Droid 3's here and they both work with 'wifi tether for root' now that I have tried them. One Did not even Have an APN with dun set up (perhaps it is not needed.)
Next thing I'll try is a Factory Reset of mine, perhaps there is something that I have F'ed up on it, Unless someone can suggest something else to try? The wifi works normally other wise.
This section is pretty bare so I thought I'd share this app that I have been using to enable unlimited tethering. It was recently updated to work on LG 5.X devices and it really works. My phone does really heat up when it's enabled, but I guess that's a small price to pay to have to worry about the tethering cap.

I use it too, it was a little funky to set up but it works. I also agree on the heating up. It does have some issues charging while it is active. I left it on accidentally over night and it was plugged in. When I looked at it in the morning it was at 40% battery. Either way still worth it.

I've been successfully running WiFi Tether Router.
LTE Tether Patch is checked.
You have to set up an APN with IPv4.
Make sure you switch to the APN you set up with IPv4 protocol.
After you connect via WiFi to your pc, check to make sure WiFi Tether Router is using data from your unlimited phone data and not the Tmo Hotspot (5gb cap)

For what it's worth, if you have unlimited data with tmo you should have 7gb of hot spot. It was increased automatically when they updated their plans.

Set up the new APN with the same settings as your existing APN which is named T-Mobile LTE.
Double & triple check the settings.
The only setting which will be different is the IPv4 setting.
I named my new APN; T-Mobile LTE 2.
I also turned my WiFi off when I'm using WiFi Router.
Your pc should see WiFi Router which you will then connect to.
The above info is for my H811.
I see you have a Note 4.
I would think that my instructions should also work.
But look on the WiFi Router instructions to see if anything should be set differently for the Note 4.

The APN Protocol needs to be IPv4, and I wasn't able to change my native protocol, the APN that's programmed into the phone which has IPv6, so I programmed a 2nd APN, which I am able to change. I use the 2nd APN when I use WiFi Router, and then I switch back to the IPv6 protocol APN when I disconnect from WiFi Router.
I didn't change no apn or check lte patch and so far I have used 40gb of wifi tether .

I just tried my original (native) APN w/IPv6 and unchecked LTE Tether Patch in WiFi Router, and it is confirmed working. Looks like the issue I was having previously regarding not connecting was unrelated to setting up a new APN, and coincidentally started working after connecting to the newly set up APN.

I am able to connect using either/or:
- APN Protocol IPv4
- APN Protocol IPv6
- LTE Tether Patch checked
- LTE Tether Patch unchecked
*Important*
When you connect to WiFi Router, check your data to make sure you are using your Unlimited Data and not your Hotspot alloted data.

To set up a new APN, press:
- Settings
- More
- Mobile Networks
- Access point names
- Press the 3 dots in upper right
- New APN
Using the settings from your existing T-Mobile LTE, fill in the following fields for your new APN, with the following changes notated with an * -
*Name
(T-Mobile LTE 2 or whatever you'd like)
APN
MMSC
MCC
MNC
*APN type
(default,supl,mms,dun)
*APN protocol
(IPv4)
I set up my new APN a while ago, but I am able to use my original APN (T-Mobile LTE) to tether without issue.
When you tether, check your account to make sure your data is being used from your included Unlimited Data and not from your Hotspot limited data.
So this app lets me use more then 7gb of teathering....so this is the teathering hack?
I've used WIFI Tether Router for several phones with great success.
I know all about the adding of ,dun to apns
But if you already have root Wifi Tether Router does not need any mods. It might also works on CDMA (roaming), where the ,dun trick does not.
It also might be less traceable by sprint.

I think these are the only changes needed from default. I so happen to use no encryption (i.e. Open) and channel = 1 which I think is default.
Interface wlan0
method 2
firmware reload unchecked
I think everything else is default.
If you scroll to bottom of Configuration there is a Link to "devices configurations/website"
I had the Native tether working too and I removed the ",dun" mod from my APN's to test this.
Mine shows Build 165
Does SuperUser pop up to grant permission?
It might not work on roaming (CDMA), same limitation as the Native mod (i.e. adding ,dun).
Who-Hoo Wifi Tether Router works on roaming (i.e. works on non Sprint CDMA Networks). The adding of ,dun to APN's method only works on Sprint Networks (i.e. LTE and eHPRD). WIFI Tether Router works on everything. But you do need root.
Tested on rooted ZV6.
can someone please explain how to add ,dun to apn? ive looked online and see lines of provisional code being added. this was on a tmobile nexus 6 and i wasnt sure if thats the way for all phone. thanks in advance!
There is a video specific to the Sprint phone, where the guy walks through the steps one by one showing each step and result to add the dun info, though I don't recall if it was specifically the apn info that was modified?
Anyway, you need an app that can create shortcuts for hidden features of the phone, as explained on the guide. Install that app, that allows you to run the program built into the phone that lets you edit the thing to add the dun text and save it.
Sorry I don't recall the details, but it's another thread here about free wifi tether or hotspot.

Which hotspot method, Native (with ,dun added to APN's) or WIFI Tether Router?
I saw similar issue when trying to tether on Ev-Do it will connect for a moment and disconnect.
The APN method will not work on Ev-Do (usually that means roaming but not always).
Latest WIFI Tether Router will work on Ev-Do but requires root.

I am having an issue with wifi tether router where it will connect for a while and then the wifi signal will stop on its own. I have to kill and restart wifi tether router to regain a connection. I am wondering if this is a heating problem as the phone gets fairly hot when using wifi tether router. Is there a way to reduce the wifi radio power on the G4?
Uncheck "Allow Wifi Scanning" in advanced wifi settings. Should stop the signal from going away.

So just had something weird happen want to see if anyone else ran into this. I just reset for the month yesterday and My Metro app is showing 1.3 gigs used (all tethered with app). While playing Xbox I get a message saying I have used all of my hotspot data. I checked data usage on Xbox I haven't even used a gig yet. Also they didn't throttle my data. Anyone know what's going on?
