[Q] VPN issues - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I am having issues when trying to connect to my work VPN. I need VPN access in order to check my work email and browse an internal website.
Now, the VPN always connects, either on 3G (in UK) and wifi.
However, even if it says "connected", I am not able to download emails orbrowse the intranet unless when connected to my home wifi and sometimes on mobile internet.
If connected through other wifi networks (recently tried on a hotel free wifi, in the states and on a private home network, in Croatia), the connection itself seems to go through some sort of bottleneck, and no emails or browsing is then available.
I am blaming the phone itself, since my colleague had no problems whatsoever on his iPhone.
I am on Galaxy Note, non rooted, Vodafone UK.
Please help, this issue is making my Galaxy Note almost useless.

just FYI I'm also on UK Vodafone and I can connect fine with openVPN to my home network ... tested on 2G,3G/H+ and also on various public & private WiFi networks - always connects fine, only issue I have is that my server .ovpn tells the phone to use my home router as it's default gateway (so that I can browse securely on public wifi). This doesn't work out of the box - I need to use the openVPN app's "fix DNS" option.

errr ... I'm an android noob, but AFAIK you need root for openVPN to work? I never tried running openVPN on my note BEFORE I rooted it, but anything I've ever read says root is required?

What APN do you use?
I have to switch everytime to something called MyLan to connect over 3G.
I am using the stock VPN client, did not adventure myself into OpenVPN. Would that work with an encrypted VPN?

Ah, sorry - I somehow managed to read the thread title "[Q] VPN issues" as "OpenVPN issues" .. case of my eyes seeing what they wanted to rather than than what was actually there. You are of course right, the stock VPN options don't need root (and of course openVPN client will only work to talk to an openVPN server).
I did set up a PPTP server on my WinXP home machine and tested that with the note's inbuilt PPTP VPN client - it worked OK although I needed to turn off encryption, and I didn't do anything with it beyond just connecting as I was only dong it out of interest.
re. the APN - I don't actually know where to see that on the note (noob, as I said!) - when I do settings->wireless & network-> mobile networks, which claims to allow setting APN's, there is no info or settings re. the APN other than the "network mode" and "network operators" items, neither of which seem to show the APN used for vodafone data access.
Anyway, sorry for the bum steer, hope you get it sorted

Oh, never mind
Under mobile networks you have to go under Access Point Names, but most likely you will only have one APN, which is the regular from Vodafone.
So most likely is the encryption causing problems?

D'oh ... I thought that was a heading, didn't realise it was a clickable item! my APN is wap.vodafone.co.uk (APN type is "internet+mms").
IDK if encryption is anything to do with your issues ... I doubt it if you can consistantly connect from home wifi and sometimes from 3G - if encryption were the problem I'd imagine it would consistantly connect (or not) rather than be variable.
Maybe worth trying to ping your internal mail/intranet servers when connected and then talking to your work IT guys in case there are firewall/routing settings that you are somehow falling foul of?

Yes we are doing that, however that fact that iPhones can connect really makes me wonder!

This is a question, and as such belongs in the Q&A Section

there are lots of third party vpn tools and free available you can use those

Wilsonj,
Can you please suggest one third party vpn tools that works well on PPTP, with encryption?
I am not looking at OpenVPN, since it doesn't suit my needs.
Thanks!

Help with internet sharing/tethering on Vista

OK so I thought I was halfway intelligent about all this but apparently not. I can't seem to get my internet sharing to allow me to tether on my new Tilt. I had it working fine on my Sprint Mogul so I know theoretically how to do it. I have the stock AT&T ROM (allowed customizations; just lazy about figuring out what I'd need of the customizations so I live with the bloat).
I created a shortcut for IntShrUI.exe in my \windows\start menu\programs folder to start the internet shar. I start Internet sharing and select USB and AT&T ISP GPRS (or MEdia Net; same result). It says connected and doesn't give me any errors but I can't seem to connect to anything from my PC or even ping anything. I'm using a Windows Vista PC. While internet sharing is connected I can connect to the web on the phone itself but not from the PC.
I was originally on "PDA Personal Max UNL + 1500 Messages" but I couldn't seem to connect to ISP.CINGULAR and I thought maybe that's why I couldn't tether (and I thought it'd probably prevent me from connecting to my corporate VPN). So I called in and the tech guy said that plan isn't provisioned for ISP.CINGULAR so he switched me to the "older" (his words) PDACnctUntlAdd which is the same price and includes ISP.CINGULAR but not 1500 messages. In hindsight I'm guessing that's not my problem (especially since it didn't fix it) and I'll prob go back to PDA Personal Max with the 1500 messages once I figure out the tethering and assuming it allows me to VPN.
My settings are:
AT&T ISP GPRS
Modem:
APN: isp.cingular
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1 (doesn't show it but found that online)
Domain: blank
Advanced Settings:
TCP/IP: Use server-assigned IP Address
Use software compression: not checked
Use IP header compression: not checked
Servers: User server-assigned IP Address
Proxy Settings:

MEdia Net
Modem:

Password: ????? (doesn't show it and never looked for online)

TCP/IP: Use server-assigned IP Address
Use software compression: not checked
Use IP header compression: not checked
Servers: User server-assigned IP Address
Proxy Settings:
This network connects to the Internet: checked
This networks uses a proxy....: not checked
I've tried to do it with the proxy disabled (running Disable Proxy from programs) and with it enabled with the same result.
So what can I be doing wrong? I'm sure it's something supremely stupid (if it's not a provisioning problem but how could it be that?) but I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Any help greatly appreciated and let me know if there's anything else you'd need to know to get this working.

So your device says connected (and can surf the web) but your laptop wont connect?
So is your laptops firewall blocking the network?
Have you tried it over bluetooth, and use the BT PAN option. Select BT in ICS and click connect, and click YES to allow it to be discoverable, then in Vista, click start, connect to, Then click Set up a network or connection. Then scroll down to the bottom option (BT PAN). Click it and it will offer your device's BT PAN, select that and click connect.
Wait for 30 seconds, then open the web.
Solution from ATT-Connect your Laptop/PDA
Here ya go! Tried it myself with the usb. Workin good-ATT has a comm manager app that installs on the laptop.
Here's the link to the ATT support for it.

Thanks for your help; hadn't thought of turning off firewall since it worked with the mogul without doing that. Tried that and it didn't work. Then tried with bluetooth and that didn't work either. Didn't want to use the ATT comm manager on the off chance that they could track tethering usage on it.
And of course it was a stupid thing not to check but something made me try connecting to an IP address and not a URL and BAM! it worked. So I guess I have a DNS problem and not a connection problem.
So now anyone have an idea why the laptop can't resolve DNS but the Tilt can? Should I manually set free public DNS servers on the Tilt? Or on the laptop?
Vista you said? correct?
Try making the network that Vista sees when you connect-private; if it's public,it'll block stuff
Yeah, it's already set to private. Still no DNS resolution. I'm going to try using a free public DNS server on the PC. Strange that the Tilt isn't passing thru DNS for me but it seems it is for everyone else.
Well using the free DNS servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) seems to work now and it even seems to resolve DNS faster. I feel better that I figured out how to get it to work but I'm definitely confused as to why it doesn't work by default like it does for everyone else.
get tethering working yet?
hi,
i have the same issue. have unlimited data plan on my tilt. no problem with connection on my tilt (although i did not put in all that proxy setting crap att asks you to put in).
anyhow
- installed the htc modem driver on my laptop.
- turned on the modem on the tilt
- created a new dialup connection on my xp laptop
---> question here, what is the "phone number" that should be dialed???
--> for [email protected], password is CINGULAR1 also
as a last resort i will try using the att comm manager, but like you i don't really want to do it due to any tracking att may be doing...
would be great to hear if loading that local dns resolves your problem, altho it seems kinda clugey (sp?)
lol-
ya'all kill me.
Anything at all, including data; going through any major network in the U.S., is tracked- period. Cell calls, data, internet connections, and even landline calls are ALL tracked in the U.S. now. Thanks to the current administration, EVERYTHING is tracked.
Alemaker
I meant tracked in terms of tethered vs non-tethered (not being on a tethered plan; but then I tether about once a month when travelling in airports if that so I'm not worried about it). I know big brother is always watching (especially on AT&T):
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id=3833172&page=1
@jprai I did get tethering working by just changing my DNS settings on the laptop to free servers. I'm not using wireless modem but the Internet Sharing app on the PocketPC (go to \Windows and copy the shortcut "internet sharing.lnk" to your \Windows\Start Menu\Programs directory and then you'll be able to start the app easily). It's much easier to use (well now that the DNS issue was figured out).
I'm still very curious why DNS isn't working for me with the default settings and it does for everyone else but I'm OK with this work-around for the time being.

This did the trick for me, thanks!
For those not fully aware of how to do this, connect your phone with ICS, go to network connections (control panel->network and sharing center->manage network connections), right click on the phone's connection (hover over them if you're not sure about which is which... mine said NDIS something or other), go to properties, click on TCP/IPv4, go to properties, and then give it the DNS addresses listed above.
Thanks!

Kaiser and VPN

Hello,
does someone use a VPN software on the Kaiser ?
Wich one ?
I tried several but none worked.
My Kaiser is using the built in VPN client, to VPN into two different Microsoft RRAS networks using PPTP and IPSec/L2TP.
What problems are you experiencing? What type of networks are you trying to VPN into?
Thanks a lot for your answer !
I didn't know the Kaiser had a VPN client included ...
Where is the application ? What's its name ?
Is there a documentation I can find somewhere to help me to configure it ?
The other thing is that I use a SecurID password to connect to my corporate network, I don't know if this can work also with the Kaiser VPN.
In fact I would like to connect to my corporate network wich accepts both IPSec/UDP and IPSec/TCP. All I know is that I need a Cisco compatible VPN application.
I tried "AnthaVPN", it connects to our Cisco server, but then it disconnects after a few "Time Out" errors.
Thanks again for your help !
I would be interested in this too... we use Cisco at work using Cisco ipsec/udp but no idea how to set this up on the phone
Finally I've found how to use the buit in VPN, but it still does not work for me, because of the SecurID password I think (it says my login/password may be incorrect).
Here is how to access to the built in VPN (my device is french, I translate it to english but I'm not sure the names will be the same on english devices):
parameters/connections -> choose the "Connections" icon.
Then choose "Modify/Configure my VPN servers"
After you filled everything there, choose "Manage existing connections".
At the bottom of the screen, choose "VPN". The VPN connection you made should appear here.
Put your stylus on it until the options "delete" and "connect to" appears.
Select "connect to" and then you should be connected to your network.
I hope this helped.
So finally, I am still searching for a VPN application wich would work with SECURID passwords.
Does someone know one ?
Cisco VPN Help Required
Even my office uses a Cisco PIX Firewall with VPN. Even i have tried many softwares, but nothing seems to work. I thik it is because of the 2 phase authentication of the Cisco VPN.
Also just for info, we use IPSec over UDP (NAT/PAT)
How to set this up in my KAISER?
Hello to all
Im using AnthaVPN and it's work great with Cisco VPN Concentrator System in my KAISER. There must be also a way to connect to a pix.
http://forum.ppcwarez.org/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=32009&hilit=AnthaVPN

Like I said, I tried this one, but it did not work with SecurID keys.
I also had a problem with it related to the WIFI :
when I tried to use it with WIFI enabled, if I wanted then to disable the WIFI, it was impossible, even after a soft reset. I had to deinstall AnthaVPN to be able to disable the WIFI.
So finally I think the built-in VPN is better than AnthaVPN because I had no WIFI issue with it.
I have read the manual from the Homepage AnthaVPN and for me its OK. But i haven't testet over wifi. Over GPRS works great.
i'm using the Bluefire VPN CLient (www.bluefiresecurity.com) to connect to my university's vpn (cisco) and it's working great.
with AnthaVPN i was not able to disconnect wifi anymore (phone would hang up -> soft reset -> wifi on again), don't know if they fixed this till now
So I was not alone to have wifi problems with AnthaVPN !
Finally I tried Bluefire VPN, it works a lot better than AnthaVPN (no more wifi problems !), I can go upto the SecurID login, but after that, at "Phase 2", I have an error code talking about IPSec parameters...
So I still have problems but now I know that Bluefire is working with securid keys.

Surfing Internet While connected to VPN

Hi,
I have set up my X1 to be able to connect to my company's VPN to retrieve my emails and stuff.
However, once connected, I will be be able to surf the internet anymore. Is there a setting which we can do like disabling 'Use Default Gateway on Remote Network' like our PCs?
Cheers!
Neo
It's not a bug, and it's not related to the mobile phone either. VPN access on any OS always disable the internet access. That's we call security
I faced this before,
i went to the network administrator and explained to him, and he fixed it!
not from my X1, it was a network configuration.
actually there are 2 ways to get the internet.
1st is through the VPN it self (you will use your company internet connection) your connection will be
X1 -> VPN -> Company -> internet Request -> Company -> VPN -> X1
2nd is through special config in their VPN routing things (i don't know what it's called really) so simply when you request the emails, the connection will be routed to VPN, otherwise it will be through your regular GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA/WiFi
the 2nd option is the best (but i think it requires a newer hardware as it's a relativly new technolog) because it will not waste the company's internet bandwidth.
check with your network administrator, they can help
By the way, the BlueFire VPN client can optionnally allow internet access from your mobile directly to the internet
Thanks for the reply guys. I will tryyour suggestions!
Cheers!
I think its called split tunnel when internet traffic goes direct and intranet goes down vpn tunnel.
I had same problem with my laptop and xp, our company changed the policy and everything has to go through tunnel (split tunnel disabled). With an earlier version of the Cisco vpn client I could mess with the routing table to revert to split tunnel - You may be able to do this on the X1, change the routes somehow?

Yes that's what i was talking about, Split Tunneling must be enabled
thanks scote for getting the right name
Yeah, Split Tunneling roxx
Can anybody help me configuring a Cisco ASA5505 to be able to get connected with my X1 over VPN? The PC-Clients are working, but it seems to be the same issue like they cant connect trough Windows builtin VPN client, only by using the one from Cisco (which is much better).
But i don't like to loose Security by setting lower policy settings for connecting without Cisco software.
Does anybody knows about the Cisco client for Windws Mobile? When i visited "Systems"-fair last year in Munich a Cisco employee told me they are working on it.
Could you maybe ask your administrator again and let us know how he did your option #2?
Anyone else know how to do split tunneling in Windows Mobile?

Connecting to ADSL Modem using WiFi

Hi,
I have ADSL modem, and I am trying to connect to the modem (via WiFi) and use internet on my HTC VIVA.
My internet connection requires authentication in order to connect. I can successfully connect to modem using Wifi connection. In order to connection to Internet, I added new VPN server from settings > Connections > Edit my VPN servers. I added all the credentials as provided by my ISP, however I am not able to connect to internet and access web pages from the Internet explorer of my device.
Please help me and let me know where I am going wrong?
Thanks,
You don't have to set your authentication data in your Viva.
All you need to do is connect to your ADSL modem using WiFi and start browsing the web. It should work correctly unless your ISP requires a proxy server.
Tell us what happens.
Hi GFX,
Thanks for replying. I connected to ADSL using WiFi, but when I open Internet explorer I get page not found.
When I was in US, I was able to access Internet as per your reply. But now I am in India and I am not able to access Internet.
Some of the differences that might help you or any other who would like to contribute
USA India
====== =======
ISP Comcast BSNL
Authentication WPA2-PSK Open
Data Encryption AES WEP
Thanks,
I'm not sure what's causing this.
Probably your ISP requires a proxy server. Can you connect to the internet using your PC??
The other thing is, your ISP has nothing to do with your ADSL modem authentication and data encryption modes! You can set these settings manually according to your personal needs. Read your ADSL modem user manual for more information.
A WPA2 authentication is recommended so you can protect your modem & internet connection from outsiders and hackers.
Check your ISP's website to see if they require a proxy server. And tell us about your ADSL modem brand and model so we can help you.
My ISP does not require proxy server, and I can connect to Internet using my PC. I am able to connect to my ADSL modem but somehow I am not able to connect to Internet.
Following are the details of my ADSL modem
Brand: Huawei
Model: WA1003A
Its an ADSL router.
Thanks,
OK, please check the following settings in your device:
1- Goto Start-> Settings -> Connections -> Connections-> Advanced tab-> tap on "Select Networks", and check that the first dropdown menu says "My ISP".
2- Goto Start-> Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi -> Network Adapters tab, and check that the first dropdown menu says "The Internet".
If you made any changes to the above settings, try to reconnect to the modem once again, it may work this time.
However, if you left the above settings unchanged then your problem lies somewhere else. Check if you can access the internet using Opera Mini, or try connecting to another router. Because we need to determine the source of the problem.
Good luck.
have you simply tried connecting via wifi with default settings?
when you switch on wifi, once the network is detected, you can feed in the values then right? sorry if this seems like a stupid answer but we often miss whats right under our noses,
Sorry for replying so late, was busy with lots of work for some time.
GFX: My connection settings are same as you mentioned. But even with these settings in place, no success.
karthiksk: I get connected to WiFi network, but after this I don't get any popup box in my device to enter the details.
Guys, however I got the solution, since my network uses PPoE, I had to configure these settings in my Modem. Earlier I was entering ISP credentials in an external PPPoE client on my PC, this way I can access Internet with only one PC at a time and WiFi was also not working.
I entered ISP credentials in my modem and configured PPoE settings. Now I can connect my PC (using Ethernet cable), my laptop using WiFi and my HTC device using WiFi at the same time.
Thank you all for helping me in trying to resolve this issue.
Good to see your problem solved.
Turns out it has nothing to do with your device!
Enjoy your Viva, it's a wonderful device.

Not working: 802.1X / WPA2 / PEAP TTLS MSCHAPV2

Hi,
I'm trying to connect to a WiFi network that is protected with WPA2 with PEAP / TTLS.
It simply is not working. No problems connecting with my HTC Desire though.
Anybody experiencing the same bug? I already installed the required root certificates, tried various combinations of user account / password. The thing is, that the network is provided by my university (Eduroam if you are familiar with that) and it is very annoying that I have to fall back to HSDPA consuming my data quota.
Cheers,
chross
Normally with eduroam wifi there isn't wpa2 or other key. Just connect your phone to it, open your browser and you will be redirect to the website of your university and then you can log with your id.
Envoyé depuis mon XT890
Yes!! This is the exact same problem I'm having with my university wifi
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33962871&postcount=2
I'd configure the settings on my uni wifi choosing PEAP and then MSCHAPV2 and put in my log in username and password according to the instruction and as soon as press connect or save it looses the signal immediately to very low and never connects. We also have eduroam as an alternative they tried that and same problem just doesn't want to connect.
It works perfect on my htc one x. I'm beginning to believe the phone has a bug.
It does have a bug. It doesn't connect to 802.11 n!
My problem was solved by reconfiguring my AVW Fritz!Box 7270 to 802.11 b+g only and limit the phones wifi frequency to 2,4ghz only. You can find that in advanced wifi configuration.
I'm lucky i only recognized this bug in my own wifi network and not others i don't have admin rights for...
eduroam works for me with PEAP/TTLS but I guess it's 802.11g
I'm on the 40002 rom, but worked also on the 31006
After receiving the 4.0.4 update yesterday, WiFi now works flawlessly.
Cheers,

Hi there,
I got the same problem with my university network in hamburg. I updated the razor to android 4.0.4 (Stock-Rom: 81.5.40002.XT890.Retail.en.EU), also the phone is rooted but still not working. Our IT advices to use WPA2 Enterprise TTLS/PAP authenthication in combination with a t-com root certificate. Every time i safe these setting the wifi signal drops as told by previous posters and the connection fails. When i enter the settingspage again, all settings are reverted to default. This also happens, while trying to connect to eduroam
any further advices?
Thanks in advance!
I have no problems connecting to eduroam at Braunschweig and other citys. Maybe you can visit the IT Desk at your university?

Yep, me and and a fellow student went there and told them about the problem. But they also gave up, after trying about an hour or so. It seems to be a general problem in the used android build, at least there are a lot of post reporting this at the google code repo -> code.google. com /p/android/issues/detail?id=15631 (sorry for that but I'm to new here to post links). I'll try the provided tips like changing the wpa_suplicant file tomorrow and report the results. Seems to be strange issue, if it works for you (and probably others), because a fellow student got the same Phone and has the same issues
Thought I'd just give an update as I have the same issue
Motorola knows about it, it's been reported to them before and said it'll be fixed with the next update.
Working smooth here with WPA2-Enterprise, PEAP and MSCHAPv2. Using it every day.
But I'm not using TTLS, you might want to disable that if you don't have a valid certificate for your mobile/user.
Also important, fill out the "anonymous user" field with your username. Depending on the RADIUS configuration of your IT this might be required.
[edit]
Just checked my mobile. I don't use a Phase 2 authentication, only EAP = PEAP, no certificates.
Got it working!
After 2 hours of searching the web and playing around, I got it working now, following this guide posted on google code repo:
Razr I (XT890), retail eu, running android 4.0.4 (stock), no root
after endless hours of trying i was able to connect to my university network a couple of minutes ago with the combination of two apps.
1. WiFi Connection Manager
Enter SSID manually
Security "802.1x EAP"
EAP Method "PEAP"
Phase 2 authentication "MSCHAPV2"
Identity "your identity"
Anonymous identity "your identity"
password "your password".
2. WiFi Advanced Configuration Editor
Check Hidden SSID
Key Management: unselect IEEE8021X, select WPA_EAP
AUTH Protocols: select LEAP
Enterprise configuration: make sure Identity and Anonymous Identity are set to your identity, Enter your password
check whether the settings are saved in WIFI Advanced Configuration Editor. If not switch of stock WiFi and repeat step 2 (!!!). Now it should work.
Turn WiFi on and connect to network (Stock WiFi; don't care about settings there, phase 2 authentification is still not saved)
After switching the device off and back on it did still work. Same when leaving and returning to WiFi area.
hopefully it will keep on working. i just tested the browser and play store. didn't discover any problems so far.

Connection is stable, but there seem to be some problems regarding to the speed. Whatever it's usable for stuff you do regularly @university.
Hope that helps others, thanks to klemens

Thank you for sharing, this made me so happy!
It's those two apps which made my connection possible.
My eduroam configuration is quite different, but the apps did the trick. I fiddled with advanced wifi config editor alone for hours without any result.
Now I just hammered the config into those two apps and what can I say - proxydroid reported a connection a few seconds later.
I dont't know what Moto's Problem with 802.1X is.
Defy latest stock rom - no connection. With CM -> no problem.
Milestone 2 with stock rom - no connection. With CM -> no Problem.
Rarz I no connection with stock wifi manager . . .
My fellow students with their samsung devices seem so have no problem at all. ^^
(even Win Mobile 6 works, thats a little bit depressing)
btw, speed is fine here. 16Mbit up&down is more than I need on a phone.
Greetings from Kiel.
