I do not have an optical drive because I used my last one twice in 2 years so when it broke I've been waiting until I get a LITE-ON bluray burner for ~$50 USD. My 8GB USB flash drive is dead, and my microSDHC cards are useless for this purpose. I do not have a traditional external drive or a spare SATA drive. I do have a 160GB 7th generation ipod classic that I use to hold about 146GB of music that interfaces with my vehicle head unit's USB port via the 30 pin connector so it's nice DAC will decode the music instead of the crappy DAC in the ipod. I have several backups of the music that is on it and periodically format it to move large files.
So, what I'm trying to do is install a distro from an iPod classic, which means I would have to make it a bootable drive. I googled this and all I found were folks that wanted to use an ipod classic as an OS drive and I'm pretty sure that would melt an ipod classic. I just want to select the USB device in BIOS, reboot, and get my new slackware and updated backtrack on those two new partitions I created yesterday. Do any of you have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Hi all,
I am taking off for a month long vacation to Asia and India soon and am having a tough time imagining my life without a functional computer... so, what better alternative (along with my 3G phone) than then Nook Color...
but...
One of the most appealing concepts to me would be to use the NC as an "uploader" of pictures I will be taking with my SLR.
So, can this be done:?
1. take out MicroSD card from Camera and somehow, with some adapter, connect via the USB port on the NC.
2. Use an app to mount/view the MicroSD storage unit and copy to the NC storage, some/all of the pictures i want.
3. Use the SmugMug Andoird App and WiFi via NC to upload pictures while I travel.
>> I guess i could do this via the the mobile phone I'm bringing, probably by swapping the memory card on the phone and using the same app, but i believe the larger screen size and easier text input would make the NC perfect for this.
Thoughts?
Thanks ahead of time.
Check in the development section for the thread on usb host support. It tells you how to hook your camera to the nook with a usb cable, I've never tried it but a lot of people swear by it.

I have NC with CM 7.1 stable on EMMC. I am able to use an unpowered USB card reader to transfer pictures off both full sized and micro SD's. Other than being on CM7 the trick is getting the correct cable. Here is the one I use:
Micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) - Xoom, Galaxy S2, Nokia N810 / N900, Toshiba TG01, Archos G9. New Version with more accommodating "L" shaped connect
Off Amazon.
You'd probably be better connecting directly to your camera, if your camera can do it. For many things connected using USB host you need a powered hub, but since the camera has its own power it probably doesn't need the hub.

There's also at least one raw format decoder called RawDroid.
I haven't tried this, but I imagine you could use a microSD to SD adapter and just use microSD cards in your camera. Take the microSD out of the adapter, put it into the Nook and copy the photos over with a file manager. This would obviously cost you more money, as microSD (I believe) is more expensive than SD, but it would save you some hassle on the Nook side.
There are few ways to get this done but b4 trying one, make sure you meet all requirement.
1. Some members suggest you swapping the uSD. It's a fastest way BUT make sure you are running CM7 off eMMC if you're booting it off the uSD itself, then forget about this method.
2. If you Tx pix directly from camera to NC, make sure you do have the microUSB-to-whatever your camera USB connector type: miniUSB or USB, cable.
Awesome tips guys, thank you.
<<There's also at least one raw format decoder called RawDroid.>>
Can't imagine what that would be useful for unless all the shooting is done in RAW and you want to preview or something...

This is what I do. Micro-sdcard w/ adapter in my Canon. Pop the card out, and put into the NC (after first uninstalling the card I normally have in there).
view pictures, copy them to internal memory, etc.
As stated above, you must not be running CM7 off the sdcard for this method to work.
I think it would also be possible to plug a flash drive in using an OTG cable (w/ power) and backup to that as well - I haven't tried that yet.
If you wanted to run cm7, you should be able to do the opposite - sdcard into a reader plugged into NC using OTG cable (w/ power?) and then copy to the sdcard that you are running cm7 from.
wow im interested in this, but do we really need a otg cable? since cm7 comes with usb-host support?
btw can the nc supply enough power to the card reader? or a 1-to-2 splitter so that the nc can be charged at the same time?
and what apps are suitable for this kind of usage?
wow the ipad got something like this already: http://terrywhite.com/techblog/archives/7657
but ipad are much larger... needs a backpack, nc can fit in a large pants pocket.
That's the cable that works for me. Plenty of power for the card reader.
i also use a microSD to SD adapter in my camera, and pop the microSD to copy the files in the internal memory of the nook (then, as i am a freak about not loosing my pics, copy them from internal memory to 2 backup microSD's)
i dont know if it impacts in anyway in the performance of the camera, i shoot with a 12 megapixels canon powershot in jpgs and 720p videos. i'm not very exigent with the transfer rate of the card
it seems that quickpic (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.alensw.PicFolder) is a good (and faster?) alternative to the built-in gallery.
what is needed... (for people who need to use a card reader) since the nook can only supply 100ma power...
1. a y-splitter cable (where can I find one? are there ready made ones?)
2. a usb charger
3. a microusb male to usb type-a famale
4. a card reader, of course
The cable I mentioned and a card reader work fine for me, no need for additional power.
Hi Guys
In need of some helps on the above issue,I have the nexus 7 jellybeam 4.4.4 and recently download nexus media importer app as i am trying to play films and view pictures from my samsung 3.0 hard drive.i have the standard otg cable and was wondering if this maybe an issue?when i plug the device in it powers and the drive works but can not view anything.if i put my usb stick i can view my files
my nexus is not rooted
thanks
You won't be able to play movies from devices like HDD.
USB port on Nexus 7 doesn't provide enough juice to spin-up platters in mechanical hard drive.
I tried that once also, the hdd was just clicking.
Either move the files to flash drive, or connect hdd through active (POWERED) usb hub - but i am not 100% sure with this on non rooted nexus. It's anyway a bit impractical.
I'm wondering if it's possible to play music on a car radio (or any usb input) thru the usb port on the note 4?
Any app, mod, hack, tweak to mount a certain folder (music) as a thumb drive?
I have several usb input audio devices, but I can't access anything when I attach the note.
I feel you, I tried to do the same with no success ended up buying a 3.5mm headphone jack to rca for my car stereo ?
Yeah that sucks

So you're trying to MOUNT a USB DRIVE filled with music and play it to your car stereo? You using a 3.5mm cable or Bluetooth here?
I have some USB OTG cables (really cheap, ebay) and play the music from my SD card using PowerAmp (FLAC Playback, also allows folder choosing; your USB drive?) through the OTG cable, to my Fiio E07k, then to my headphones/speakers. Works FLAWLESSLY, and if I plug anything to the headphone jack simultaneously, it will re-route the audio.
Hope this helps.
I want to use a usb cable from my phone into my car radio usb port and play the music that is in my phone thru the car radio using the usb cable and not the 3.5mm head phone jack.
i believe this is a feature in lollipop to enable audio through usb. gonna have to wait
"Android 5.0 has added official support for USB audio devices (both input and output) along with lower-latency audio input and the ability to mix up to eight audio channels. All of which means one, amazing, thing: "
I want my phone to act like a usb thumb drive when I connect it to my car radio thru the usb port.

I can't remember, I set it up a long time ago. It's a 64gb uhs1 card. I remember I had to format it with a pc app to get it to be recognized in my (then) Galaxy S3, and I simply moved it in to my note 4.

OK, with that being said, what stereo you using? Display style or single din?
Is it linix based or android?
Brand and model number?
I've got a pioneer single din in the wife's car (can't remember the #) and I've got a Kenwood dnx5120 double din, which has a usb port that will read a usb thumb drive or a hdd (or iPod / iPhone) but will not "see" my phone when connected usb.
I figure if it can read a usb thumb drive or even a hdd, why can't the note 4 mount itself as a thumb drive (external sd card) and allow my radio to read it's content and play it's mp3's?
Ever found a way?
Im in the same situation.
Ive tried the apps that enable usb mass storage mode on my sgh-1337m galaxy s4 and while it works and my computer recognizes my sd card as an usb drive, my car stereo still does not.
Any other way or USM enabler that works?

I have never found a way ? sad to say. If anyone can point us in the right direction if that direction even exists, that would be great.

I just bought a Kenwood KDC x701 and I had a very unusual set of circumstances. When I plug in my HTC 10 to either USB cable one or two nothing happens other than charging the phone. The Kenwood radio does not recognize the HTC 10 at all. I thought this was completely normal as I was not trying to mount the HTC 10 internal storage to play music files as I have no music files on my phone except audio recordings I make myself a phone calls and such. I am able to stream music via Bluetooth from the phone to the radio just fine and that's what I've been doing this entire time. The only thing I listen to is tidal music streaming service. So the other day I went to plug in my lgv10 to charge while I was driving and a funny thing happened. The radio display indicated it was reading and then went into a hand mode, it is literally called hand mode LOL. The next thing that happened was a message popped up on my phone asking me if I wanted to download a Kenwood app from the Play Store I hit cancel. Then all of the sudden it started playing music from the Tidal music streaming app. Although no information was displayed on the radio I was able to use the buttons to skip forward and Skip ahead of the different tracks but I am not sure I am able to pause or play music on the radio controls. I am not sure how it is possible to stream digital audio through the USB cable directly into the radio. I have no audio files stored on my phone on either phone and I'm not even sure how to mount internal or external storage on the phone if I wanted to use the head unit to access any audio files. So I called Kenwood and they said what I described is not possible with any of their head units. They did say that I should be able to mount my internal or external storage on my phone and use the Kenwood app two act as a music player and play the files on the phone and have them information sent to the radio. What it sounds to me like is I have a USB OTG situation with the LG V10 and no one knows why. Also of note I am unable to stream music from the lgv10 to the Kenwood stereo and no one knows why Kenwood does not know why. All of the track information is displayed on the radio I can control the songs going backwards and forwards the timer countdown xcetera but there's just no music. I will say streaming music from Tidal music service streaming app sounds much much better through the USB cable versus Bluetooth. I can't believe how much better it sounds over the USB cable it's like adding an amplifier to your system. I will try to make some videos and if this helps anyone that's going to be awesome. Also of note when I select source to USB when I have my lgv10 plugged in it calls the source Android1. This totally sounds to me like USB OTG. What do you all think and has anything like this happened to anyone else? And this does not work with my HTC 10.
I don't believe that this is possible any longer. It was possible under older versions of android (pre kit kat i believe) where the "internal sd" was seen as a physically separate storage device instead of being mounted under /data/media. Once they made this change, they had to swap from USB Mass Storage mode to the annoying Media Transfer Protocol. The reason Mass Storage had to be dropped is because of how it functioned. When you allowed access to your "internal sd" it would have to dismount it from the OS to give the host device plugged into the USB port exclusive access to the file system. Since they made the move to mounting it as /data/media there is no way to give that exclusive access any longer. Trying to dismount that /data/media to give that exclusive control would yank away all of the writable media away from the OS. Android would likely crash, or at least nothing would function any longer.
Hi all,
I bought my first Dremel earlier in the week so I can finally put all my evil hardware modding plans into action! First up is building a Pi into a PAL SNES case to use as a multi-emulator using RetroPie, and had some quick questions for anyone in the know…
1. Ive ordered the GPIO adapter so I can use the original controller board from the console, but will this also enable the original power LED on the SNES to work as its on the same PCB, or so I need to come up with other ideas for that? If the latter, what would you suggest given that the adapter will be using all the GPIO pins?
2. My plan is to mount the internals of an Xbox 360 wireless controller adapter (the kind you get for using a 360 pad on PC/Mac) into the case, so that the SNES reset button will press down onto the controller adapter’s button for pairing pads. I know drivers are available, but will the pi have any problems running the adapter power-wise from its USBs?
3. Given that my GPIOs will be taken up by the controller adapter, any ideas how I could get the SNES on/off switch to function as a power switch for the Pi? Ideally I'd like it to safely halt the system then remove all power when I flick the switch to 'off'.
4. Last one. I’m only going to be emulating 8bit/16bit, possibly some pre-8bit stuff, so nothing too taxing. I have heatsinks on the pi’s CPU and GPU, would a fan be needed also or will the pi be fine being passively cooled?
If anyone’s interested I can upload some photos of where I’m at so far, and I hope to get at least the hardware side of it wrapped up by midweek. Ive even mounted a USB stick into an old cart and am using it in conjunction with the original cart connector and eject bar, and a USB extender to make things a bit more authentic
Why can I play videos from flash drive on TV but not a 1TB external hard drive? I have to keep transferring from hard drive to 32GB flash drive on my Toshiba smart tv with fire tv OS platform installed. i used to have a Panasonic smart tv 10 years ago where I could plug my 2TB hard drive into the USB port and watch all my movie collection without any problems but my new Toshiba TV won’t recognise it nor will my JVC smart tv. They’re both Amazon fire tvs so i thought that could be the problem but I’m not sure. Any ideas guys?
Is the 1tb OTG drive?
Is the drive FAT32 formatted?
Does it have a dedicated power supply in case the TV USB port isn't providing enough current?

One of them I tried is, the other is 2TB. They are both compatible with my windows 11 desktop PC and windows 10 etc. they both worked in a 10 year old Panasonic Viera smart tv after Id loaded movies onto them via my PC. Don’t know if it’s just me, but, I don’t like viewing movies on PCs, iPad or iPhone, just on my TV which wasn’t a problem till I bought a couple of new ones with Amazon fire on them. I quite like my Amazon fire tvs apart from the above problem though.

Is it FAT32 formatted? This is the most common problem recognizing drives. Most FireTVs can't read drives that aren't FAT32.
Not getting enough power is more of a problem for older large HDDs with spinning platters that are less power efficient. Plugging the HDD into a powered USB hub, and the hub into the TV would be the workaround for that.
