[Q] Playing my 3.0 hdd on my google nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Accessories

Hi Guys
In need of some helps on the above issue,I have the nexus 7 jellybeam 4.4.4 and recently download nexus media importer app as i am trying to play films and view pictures from my samsung 3.0 hard drive.i have the standard otg cable and was wondering if this maybe an issue?when i plug the device in it powers and the drive works but can not view anything.if i put my usb stick i can view my files
my nexus is not rooted
thanks

You won't be able to play movies from devices like HDD.
USB port on Nexus 7 doesn't provide enough juice to spin-up platters in mechanical hard drive.
I tried that once also, the hdd was just clicking.
Either move the files to flash drive, or connect hdd through active (POWERED) usb hub - but i am not 100% sure with this on non rooted nexus. It's anyway a bit impractical.

[Q] Nexus 7 Question - How to add more memory

Hi Everyone,
Sorry, to post this here but I couldn't find a Nexus 7 (new Google Tablet) dedicated forum.
I have pre-ordered an 8GB model for a friend of mine over-seas in a place where there is no internet (not so easily available). However, they do use USB keys to transfer data, videos, pdfs, and music back and forth. Since the tablet doesn't have an SD Card slot, how can the USB port be used to transfer files say from a USB key? Would that even be possible? is there a converter for USB port to mini-USB port?
Thanks

Yes, there is. Look up "Stickmount," by Chainfire. Apps cannot be run off it, but it is free and only requires a cheap OTG cable.

T&S OTG Cable

Got my T&S OTG Cable today, tried it on 4.2.1 with StickMount, works great, tried my usb mouse, flash drive..it even picked up my wd hdd (500gb), but it woudnt play videos using any player, i'd have to copy it to my device first and then play it, but they would play from the flash drive
I am trying to coonect my nexus 7 with otg cabel to huawei internet stick but I can't. I have PPP widget app and it doesn't connect. I've got everything set up (I hope) but nothing.

Powering external HDD OR Nexus 10+other USB device with external battery...?

This might be a bit of a tricky question...
I have this thing:
http://www.amazon.com/EasyAcc-12000...e=UTF8&qid=1371758929&sr=8-1&keywords=easyacc
And I would like to connect my 2.5" hdd to my Nexus 10. But even if I'll be able to connect it, I'm fairly certain it'll drain the battery veeery fast. Could I power either the hdd with a cable like this
http://www.amazon.com/OEM-UTStarcom...?ie=UTF8&qid=1371759016&sr=8-3&keywords=usb+y
or charge the nexus 10 while using the hdd if I connect both the external battery and the hdd to a usb hub like this http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...e=UTF8&qid=1371759098&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+hub and then obviously connecting the usb hub to the Nexus...
? I don't want to use an externally powered usb hub because I won't have access to a power outlet all the time.
Has anyone ever tried this? Can I ruin my device by playing around with plugging different things at once into it's usb port or is that safe?
Device is rooted if that matters.
I know this is primally not useful but try posting on reedit as well? Sorry but I don't have much knowledge in this area

It's probably possible, but it wouldn't work.

In my opinion everything is possible with the right "CODE" and that is attached to a human memory with very smart neurons!
From what I saw there I'm assuming that the memory hard drive or card GB is internal to the board ? I want to replace the 32GB with a 64 GB card or whatever these HP tablets have . I don't want to get into un-soldering and soldering though .... Thanks

Everything is integrated. If you want to expand storage you can use an OTG Micro USB HUB an attached a USB 64GB flash drive, it will be bulky but works!

That would work ? that would be great if it can . I would like to place movies onto the usb flash drive and play off it, So you saying it can work ? Thanks
Of course it works, you can play movies directly from the USB flash drive. You will need to supply power to the USB drive, connected by wire or using a Power Bank.

Is a Micro USB Port, is the same as your charger. The one that you connect to your Tablet. Search and do some reading on how it works, is very simple but you have to understand how all comes together, there is information on this site also.
Once you have Android install on your tablet, it works the same as others Android or Tablet Devices.
I finally got a OTG Micro USB straight cable, usb on one end and micro on the other, try it out and nothing happens, is there a setting with the tablet that needs to be turn on or off ? thanks
What version of Android are you using? or the type or ROM?

Its ......Kitkat .... Android 5.1.1 version and cm-11-20161219-NIGHTLY-MLQ-tenderloin .... This is very stable ... Thanks
The ROM that you are using is from the Developer Milaq.
I installed the latest Nightly dated December 26 of 2016, of the ROM you are using.
https://milaq.net/downloads/tenderloin/cm-11.0/
After a fresh installed I connected the OTG Micro USB HUB, then connected the HP Touchpad cord charger to the OTG and finally the USB flash drive ( SanDisk Cruzer Glide 16GB). You will noticed that the USB flash indication light starts flashing and a notification on the Left top side on Android tells you ( USB Storage in USE ). Then you go to the File Manager and you will see USB Storage, when you touch it you will see all the files on the USB flash drive and you can play your movies directly from there at the same speed as if were on the internal storage. When you are done, go to setting and storage and eject the USB Flash drive. Is very simple!

I don't see nothing since nothing happens once I connect it, though if I use the cable to connect to my computer I am able to see the tablet internal drive, but not to a flash drive from tablet to flash . This is why I was asking what's exact cable type for this tablet port . I'm thinking it isn't the correct one . There so many different sizes out there. Thanks for your suggestion, much appreciated
I sent you the link to Amazon of the OTG.
Did you take the time to learn what OTG is?

Yes, I did view it but the type that goes into the tablet isn't listed . I bought one already that I assume is the correct size but with these micro usb connectors there is many different types, do you understand what I'm trying to say . Pic below is what I'm using

All the information is on this web site:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582771
And for the second time this is the OTG cable that I have, which I posted the link : https://www.amazon.com/Adaptor-Powered-Charging-Charger-Connector/dp/B00LTHBCNM/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1486568545&sr=8-31&keywords=micro+usb+otg If you look at the specification of how it works it tells you is a "Micro Usb HUB Adaptor with Power Powered"
The HP touchpad or old devices do not offer power to the micro usb port, you need a Y adapter one to supply power to the USB flash drive and the other one for data.
That is why I said, do some research to understand the connection, which it clearly shows on the Amazon product.
Oh ok now I got you it also needs power to make it work, the tablet alone isn't good enough . See, I was hoping just a simple connector going into the tablet Micro and have on the other end usb female connector were by I could plug in a flash stick without power needed . Thanks for all your help

That will work with devices that allow power out from the charging port. The work around for old devices is the Y connector, with the connector I posted you can use a USB Keyboard, a USB mouse and a USB flash drive all at once, turning a tablet into a regular desktop PC. Like I posted your ROM will work and you can play movies directly from the USB drive with no loss in performance, with only your basic ROM nothing else is need it.
You are very welcome and have fun!

Toshiba fire tv won’t recognise external hard drive with movies on

Why can I play videos from flash drive on TV but not a 1TB external hard drive? I have to keep transferring from hard drive to 32GB flash drive on my Toshiba smart tv with fire tv OS platform installed. i used to have a Panasonic smart tv 10 years ago where I could plug my 2TB hard drive into the USB port and watch all my movie collection without any problems but my new Toshiba TV won’t recognise it nor will my JVC smart tv. They’re both Amazon fire tvs so i thought that could be the problem but I’m not sure. Any ideas guys?
Is the 1tb OTG drive?
Is the drive FAT32 formatted?
Does it have a dedicated power supply in case the TV USB port isn't providing enough current?

One of them I tried is, the other is 2TB. They are both compatible with my windows 11 desktop PC and windows 10 etc. they both worked in a 10 year old Panasonic Viera smart tv after Id loaded movies onto them via my PC. Don’t know if it’s just me, but, I don’t like viewing movies on PCs, iPad or iPhone, just on my TV which wasn’t a problem till I bought a couple of new ones with Amazon fire on them. I quite like my Amazon fire tvs apart from the above problem though.

It’s not a dedicated power supply hard drive which I have had in the past.

Is it FAT32 formatted? This is the most common problem recognizing drives. Most FireTVs can't read drives that aren't FAT32.
Not getting enough power is more of a problem for older large HDDs with spinning platters that are less power efficient. Plugging the HDD into a powered USB hub, and the hub into the TV would be the workaround for that.
