Sorry if I missed the answer to this somewhere else in these forums. I've been at this for hours and have ~200 tabs open.
So I've got a Sprint HTC Hero that is rooted (I can su from both terminal emulator and adb shell) The current ROM is the stock sprint (v2.31.651.7)
I've installed CWM (v2.5.0.7) via ROM manager but no matter what I do I just get stuck at the HBOOT or Fastboot menu. I can't seem to get into clockwork... Even when choosing 'Reboot Recovery' in the ROM manager menu. Both this and reboot recovery via adb just take me to fastboot...
I've tried many, many things and just can't seem to get into any custom recovery menu. Am I doing something wrong?
Any help is appreciated.
Recovery from Hboot
Power off>hold "home" and "power" until it boots>BAM!
Also sent you a PM
Home and power seems to take me to a different menu but still not cwm recovery.
The only option I see here is to wipe user data.

Well dont do that until we know you have a solid recover image and you are ready to flash a new ROM.

See if you can get this to work.
Could CWM somehow be bad? Are there any other custom recovery images worth trying?

Thank! That worked. I was able to update it using method2 in the above post and can now boot into recovery via adb reboot recovery and from ROM manager. I still can not get to CWM via any key combination at boot time. But what I have now is enough to flash custom ROMs to my device.
I may try to unlock Hboot (Currently I'm s-on and it sounds like s-off is more helpful) but from what I've read none of the methods support the newest radio and I would have to flash back to a previous version (I grabbed 1 of these .zips but CWM won't flash it.)
Anyway. Thanks again for the help and If anyone has any suggestions for getting s-off please let me know.
Even if you have to RUU, you now have the tools to get back to this point in no time flat

I've read it many times friend. As I said above the issue is that none of the methods I've found work with the latest radio. I've attempted to downgrade my radio version but the .zips I found gave errors or the download links were 404'd

I've seen a lot of Vivids with WCX these days.
Post your experience with each one!
Stock CWM ftw
CWM still has a lot of issues. It's been causing quite a few hard bricks. Anyone that still has it, I would highly suggest switching to WCX recovery. I have yet to try TWRP but from what I've heard from all the devs, it still has a few kinks. I wouldn't recommend anything other than WCX at the moment.
I don't really see it as whats "preferred". You don't want something on your device that can potentially cause a hard brick. A recovery is something you don't use very often, so it's best to go with the one that just works.
Nice answer, right now I'm on the stock RUU ICS rom with an unlocked bootloader and I want to flash the WCX recovery, I just have to put the wcxrecovery.img in the microSD root, enter in Hboot, select recovery and then flash it with "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.exe"?
Do I have to make a backup of something after doing this?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

Actually, just put the wcxrecovery on your computer where you have adb and fastboot set up. If you don't know where that is, just download the wcxjb root zip from the guide in my signature and unzip it to your desktop. Enter hboot on your phone and select fastboot. Shift + right click on your computer inside the folder you just unzipped and select open a command window here. THEN, type in the command "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img" and you're good to go.

I know it's possible, but I've never tried it. The best tip I've picked up from the guide was this
- Tip 3: On Linux, remember to run fastboot under sudo

Just download and install the Android SDK for linux, what distribution are you using?
I suppose you're using Ubuntu or some .deb based distribution, this tutorial may serve for you:
Running something on "sudo" is giving superuser attributes to the processes and services that a program or whatever you are running needs to have to function properly. Yes it's important when you flash with fastboot.
If you can flash on a laptop will be better for you, a friend of mine bricked his galaxy sII when he was flashing and there was an electricity short.

I use the recovery-beta2 recovery from thecubed. I tried WCX but I couldn't get any ROM's to flash with it... nothing but bootloops for some strange reason (yes I fastboot flashed the boot.img first people). I reflashed thecubed's recovery right after having issues and flashing ROM's worked again. I'm sticking with what works and I've had zero issues with thecubed's recovery after using for several months.
I know I sound redundant, but does anyone have a link to the latest WCX recovery?
You have to download from WildChild's website.... It's included in his ROM zip. You have to have 10 posts on his site before you can download anything so be prepared to "earn" the download.

Did you use the recovery un-installer to get rid of CWM before you tried the WCX recovery? I remember some people having issues trying to use WCX over one of the previous CWMs without un-installing it first.

Some people just throw stuff out like they know what's going on... Wow get facts right first bro
Y'know if CWM loops, it's because your rom of choice had a useless ext4 performance tuning script in it that changed some of the mount options of /cache.
If you have CWM and find that after flashing a ROM that does weird things to your Vivid, just reboot to fastboot, then issue "fastboot erase cache" then boot to recovery and format /cache.
CWM hasn't caused any hard bricks, it's ROM developers that aren't properly checking their 'init.d tweaks' and updater-scripts. Now that we have s-off, a bad tweak or updater-script can and WILL make your phone hard to fix.
just used TWRP on my Sprint Gnex and love the interface! I used CWM on my old Epic 4G and it worked great too. To me, seeing all the options on that screen is easier....seems stable.

Great point but how would the average Joe know that about a rom before a flash? I'd love to be able to know that and avoid bricking altogether (but wouldn't we all). any tips?

Not sure if this was directed at me but I'll assume it is. WC closed all of his dev threads on XDA (Vivid forum at least) which is why I assumed it wasn't here anymore (yes I searched before replying). Not sure that I've ever seen dev related content stuck in a [GUIDE] thread (maybe a link to the thread that has it) so not sure why this was the place chosen and probably why I missed it. Apparently I'm not the only one since I've seen multiple people asking who can't find it. I appreciate you keeping me honest though "bro".

WCX all the way, ROM's, Recovery, & Kernel. Now, I'm not trying to say that CWM doesn't work, I used it alot when I was rooting & flashing my Aria... but I've had nothing but 100% success using WCX Recovery & ROM's since before I started beta testing for him (along with all the other dedicated members).
I've never used TWRP before, & all I think about when I see that word is Big Booty Shaking!!! ;-)
WCX! I have to say that EVERYTHING that he and his team put out is top notch!
So I just recently rooted my Sprint Hero using z4root after failing in several other ways. I would like to put on a custom recovery and start messing with custom roms, but I am running into numerous roadblocks.
For one, the recovery on the phone is corrupted. I'm not sure how, but if I boot to recovery I get a red exclamation point symbol.
So I tried to use adb and flash_image to install the recovery, but discovered that flash_image is not on my phone.
I have found the binary for flash_image but have not been able to put it into /system/bin in order to execute it. I would have to put adb into root mode to push it directly there, but can't since I am still running Release code. I can't move it from /sdcard or /data because I got a cross-device error.
I did figure out how to run flash_image from /sdcard, but I just got 'out of memory' errors.
I have tried downgrading to 2.27.651.5 since that seems to be the version everyone uses to fix anything, but the ruu fails to install due to Error [140]: Bootloader Version Error
I have been able to downgrade to 2.27.651.6, but that didn't help anything.
I am clueless at this point and feel like I have done my due diligence. Any ideas?
I should also add my current config:
SW number 2.32.651.2
Baseband 2.42.02.10.29
Kernel 2.6.29-ba77cf03
HBOOT-1.47.0000

Yes. I would be thankful for any suggestions.
Z4 will give you root but not a recovery I believe. The reason why you have the red triangle isn't because you have a corrupt recovery its because you have no revovery. Ill send you a pm with something that might help.

Have you tried simply installing ROM Manager to install the recovery that way? That's generally the quickest and easiest way to do it, and should set you up for getting everything going.

Please help me when you get the chance
I looked in the market and saw Rom Manager in mine. Make sure that you flash the recovery 1st and then do a backup (nandroid) so you have your current phone just in case something happens when you start flashing new roms or something. I don't know why you don't show the app in the market. I don't think that Z4 would change your build.prop, but I have never used Z4 either.
I apologize on the delay. If you haven't solved your issue yet check your pm's.

This is an update on a previous post, this time however you don't have to sieve through Chinese websites to get them....i have spent time to get them for you!
This Will revert your HTC Salsa to Stock
By using these you will wipe everything you have done. Recovery will be wiped, unknown about lock/unlocked boot-loader as i haven't attempted this with unlocked boot-loader before as.i had s-off at the time.
You do this at your own risk, i take no responsibility at all for anything that may or may not happen lol
Instructions for use.
HTC SYNC installed but not running, you want the cable driver mainly.
Instead of following on screen instruction via the RUU, set your phone into fastboot mode yourself then activate/run the RUU.exe you require, i would suggest run as administrator (right click on application)
This will take some time to install, i did it on 3rd attempt, first 2 were relying on the RUU to boot the phone for me...3rd i booted into fastboot/bootloader myself and away it went.
if for any reason it doesn't respond to you or it doesn't install stock or freezes, whip out the battery and do it all again!
Below are the RUU's please find the correct region your in and download accordingly. EU RUU is a common one if the others don't work. all roms are based of this version.

as the link in the lower post suggested you can also try this
*this wasn't provided by me please don't blame me if anything goes wrong*
1. Download your RUU
2. Extract and copy the system.img AND boot.img to the same directory as your fastboot tools "C:/fastboottools" ( make sure to copy both files )
3. Enter the fastboot mode on your phone by pressing volume down + power button after the device has been turned off.
4. Choose fastboot on the phone by pressing power button, and then connect your phone to your PC
5. Using fastboot tools, open the Command prompt and navigate to "C:\fastboottools" then run this command on cmd: "fastboot flash system system.img"
6. Dont reboot, Using fastboot tools, run this command on cmd: "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
( The two commands in step 5 and 6 are different, make sure to type each one correctly and to do them straight after each other )
7. Reboot phone. let it boot up, you will still get bootloop or error message.
8. Take out the battery.
9. Boot back into bootloader ( Volume down + power ).
10. Now choose recovery.
11. Phone should now reboot itself and bam, all should now work fine.
Well it seems a lot of you shadows hiding away wanted these lol, as the downloads in 1 day surprised me lol.

I managed to revert back to stock using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631121
Now I am running 2.3.3
Now i just want to update to 2.3.5 if possible, haven't been able to get OTA updates. Do you know how i can go about it?
CWM recovery is still intact.
Thanks
The salsa will never have 2.3.5 ota. HTC stopped at 2.3.3 and discontinued updates for us. well the stopped producing the salsa and totally dropped it.
that's why we have 2.3.5 roms that are not meant for us...ie no FB button that works correctly, no mirror or front facing camera.
and this is probably why noone is still running stock roms anymore

I tried to extract them from the executable using 7-zip but can't see them there.
Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

in all fairness mate, i can't help on this. these guides were provided by others and has been known to work for us. i have not tried this and will not be trying this either as i have no desire to revert. what i do mention in all rom threads is this. take a backup of your stock rom in recovery before you tamper or change anything, this way you can revert straight back to your stock rom, no questions asked.
i would think though you may not have either installed correctly or its the wrong ruu, but i can't tell

you won't get a zip version ruu only stock as i listed rom wise. now did you lock the bootloader before trying to add stock back on?
if you did there's part of your problem.
unlock it again, go find stock.zip in stock rom thread in android development section and flash it....then lock the bootloader. if you lock the loader again please note root etc won't work/function correctly again. to have any root privilege's you require either s-off or unlocked bootloader.

tends to be normal that, but just to let you know...i have only ever reset using the ruu once before and it took along time to do it! since then ive never gone back. ive flashed stock.zip which gave me back stock...but its not for me.
so flash my stock.zip nothing else.
if it is just Facebook your having issues with then don't just swap roms or go back to stock, it won't help, it will probably make it worse to be honest. im using a new black Facebook as i hosted in the thread in android apps section and have no problems with it.
just make sure you have Facebook installed and moved to sd only.

thats just the thing you see....
for some reason, if i try the stock.zip i always have wifi issues as well as facebook issues and well... i have tried all the facebooks from 1.9.9 to the black one and it dosnt seem to sign in... evern after i have unin installed and moved to sd card using links2sd....:crying:
as for stock....
what i think is that there is a problem with my hboot... and error massage came up saying my hboot is newer than the one im trying to install... any way i can downgrade? (sorry for asking for so much of you)

no way to downgrade sorry.
it has been noted elsewhere that this Facebook issue tends to fail when its installed on normal internal memory or as an update on-top of the system Facebook already installed.
you can tell if this is the case by going into link2sd and looking at Facebook.apk, it may have a green updated next to it. you can remove this update by uninstalling it.
i don't have this problem as it works fine on CM7.
you can try and uninstall the Facebook you have, go into recovery wipe cache/dalvik and reboot, apparently this removes all traces it was there.
reboot and install Facebook 2.0 or black which ever.
using link2sd move it to the sdcard and then try it.
i am gonna try this on other roms when i can to see if this works or not.

Hi, can me tell somebody which Rom worked fine without Problems? Please not the oldest Roms.
I read something about the Cronmod but is this now for the dream or for the desire?
Which files I need exactly and where I can download all?
Some files how SPL 1.33.0013d or AmonRA Recovery I dont found to download. All links are down.
I see this showthread but when do it from there I become only my G1 Logo and not more.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641692
Maybe somebody know a better Rom the run stable where I become all files on one site and not one here and the another there.
A detailed description would be nice.
I need all, because in the moment the software is a little be crashed. I want to do all new.
Thanks for help.
Does "CronMod-Dream" not give you a clue? (yes, it's for the Dream) and read the ROM Bible and G1 Oracle.

Don't install RA_Amon Recovery, use ClockWorkMod instead, it' much better imo. Install ROM Manager from the Play Store then follow the steps in the app to install CWM Recovery.
First of all, we need to know some information about your device.
Go into fastboot mode:
1. Turn off phone completely.
2. Hold the camera button and press power. Let go when you see something.
3. Write down the information on that page.
4. Pull out the battery and put back in and turn on the phone.
Now, go into Settings > About and write down everything you see there.

ClockWorkMod may have some problems flashing SPLs and Radios. Amon_Ra is definitely the better recovery in terms of stability.
sorry htcdreamon, im going to have to agree with nerdyguitarist here, of all the custom recoveries for the dream ive only never had issues with amonra 1.7
personally i say stick with it but to each there own!

Yeah, I guess so, it's just CWM has never given me any problems and I'm just generally more comfortable on it tbh. Plus things like having to have zips on the root of the sd card are annoying on Amon_RA, but maybe you just get used to it.
hey use what works, one mans opinion is just that so i dont need to change anyones mind. i have ran into issues with clockwork too many times where i try to stay away from it on any device not just the dream. granted koush deserves our respect as one of the first to make a custom recovery for any device but i just find that many have improved on his or made their own that are better
hey guys, Just trying to get my bearings on where to start. A friend game me a HTC Desire 510 that was not loading for him. Just sticking on the HTC loading screen.
He managed to "unlock" it. Not sure if it has root access.
In anycase it will not loal anymore, stuck on HTC load screen. I followed a few threads and tried to reset/restore things but now it looks like i need to just reinstall the OS.
Where I am lost is where/can i get the stock OS for this phone?
If not , do i need to get root access, load in a bootloader and then load in a custom ROM?
last time I did all this before was 2 years ago on a Samsung so I am a little rusty on the steps.
details
HTC Desire 510 - europe (Irish)
HBOOT - 3.19.0.0000
Radio 01.02.012
When I load up the bootloader I have "Sofrware status: Officaial *** at the tope and UNLOCKED under that.
Cheers
check the htc website for the latest rom(update) also this thread is sprint/virgin/boost
http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-510/development/virgin-sprint-htc-desire-510-stock-t2961521
cricket stock rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-510/help/stock-rom-cricket-htc-desire-510-t3161697
id see if the htc site works first but thats just me.
hope i was of help to you with your issues if not wait for more experanced members to assist.

Are you in Europe? If you are that's most likely a 64 bit phone and you'll need Philz Touch Recovery unless you have one installed. You'll also need to find a 64 bit stock HTC desire 510 rom.. It should work after installing them.
Edit: The HTC websites rom updater will not work since the phones boot is unlocked.. Just try what I said above.
Yes I am in Europe.
Will give what suggested a go and let you know..

Ok guys , getting around to trying this now but running into some small problems.
Question 1
I have installed adb.exe and it does work with my main phone (HTC m8) but when i plug in the broken phone it does not pick up that phone (when i do a ">adb.exe devices") I saw some comments saying that I need to enable debug mode but how can I do that when i cannot even load the phone up ?
Question 2
I would like to install this Philz Touch Recovery , so i can installed the new RUU but I see on some sites that I need to install ClockworkMod first. Now I am not sure if this is needed or not but i still have the problem of being unable to install it from the bootloader screen. There is no option to install from zip? So this might sound like a real n00b question but how can install anything to my phone when all i have it the bootloader screen. My options when i boot up are . . .
Fastboot
-->HBOOT
-->RAMDUMP
-->REBOOT
-->REBOOT fastboot
-->power down
recovery
factory reset
simlock
check smartSD
image CRC show barcode.
Review. . .
I would think my issue is with the broken phones connecting to my laptop and the use of adb.exe. If I could get that working i can use adb.exe to installl clockworkmod and from that I can boot up the phone and install Philz Touch Recovery, and then using phils installer I can install the original 64bit Rom and be in business?
does that seem right?
Cheers

Well now that you say that. I am having a strange issue. The phone will boot but only when I select "recovery" mode from the bootloader?
I presume what I have done is flashed the wrong image to the wrong section. I think i need to to flash something to boot and not to recovery when I was running the "fastboot flash recovery image.img!"
ideas?

I don't get what you're trying to do. If you wanna get back up and running, all you have to do is relock the bootloader and run the RUU... That's it. Your recovery doesn't matter. You don't need a custom recovery for that. Any custom recovery you have will be replaced by the stock one when you run the RUU.
I haven't been on this forum much lately, (so please correct me if I'm wrong, somebody) but from what I remember, the only custom recovery available for the 64-bit variant 510 is Philz. If that's the case then you shouldn't be flashing CWM

Yes you seem to be correct . I locked the bootloader and then used the command "fastboot flash boot <htc_orginal_ruu>" and it started working again.
I had lots of issues trying to get the CWM installed . It was someone else on this thread that suggested that but I think that info was wrong.
And just to conform for others that may read this someday you do not need Phils recover if you want to get the original system running. if you want to install custom ROMs then you need it then.
Thanks for the input. Half the time its just good to write out your problem so you can understand.

I did say you needed philz touch recovery if you have a 64 bit phone and you never really answered the 64 bit question and I asked because you said you are in Europe (Irish) and if you do have a 64 bit phone then you do need philz if you want to use other roms like the rest (most) of us on here do.

I've read through this entire thread more than 3 times and I never once seen anyone in this thread tell you to run CWM(ClockWorkMod).. or to even use that so where did get that idea from... The only thing I suggested was Philz Touch Recovery as did @Surj138 for a good reason cause it's the only one that's 64 bit for your phone!

It was from other threads that I read to install Phils recovery I would need install CWM but I think now that is for other phones. I said it was in this thread by mistake.
As for going for the original ROM as opposed to a custom ROM my reasoning is three fold. . . .
1. This phone will not be staying with me. Will be giving it back to my friend who is giving it to his daughter. She is would have no use for a root phone.
2. The last time I was using custom ROM was with my Samsung S2 about 3 years ago. I did like all the extra features, free apps and full customization that you can do with it but I did find that no matter what custom ROM I found there would be little problems with each one. Performance would slowly drop the more i switched around the custom ROMS.
3. Custom ROMs are great and all but we cannot be 100% sure there is not hidden male-ware in some of them that is robbing my data. It was going to be a spare phone for playing games then i would not mind but to give to someone as there main phone is not the best option.
