Hi all!
I've some antutu results... it seems that on 1600Mhz, Note is far behind (compared to S2) in the following values:
2D (126 ?!)
3D (598 ?!)
SD card read (8.9MB)
this is with AbyssNote 3.1 kernel and Criskelo V1, but I've similar results with stock and other ROMs too. Using Chainfire's 3D driver don't change the results.
Do you have any knowledge about these values and/or the reasons behind 'em?
and what about real world performance not a benchmark?
benchmarks are great for giving people something to brag about, but these are not real world tests, compare it side by side for speed when using the phone not a benchmark

Try to run 2 or 3 time benchmark. this a known issue to Mali as GPU will always lock to 160mhz from the higher 267mhz..
For sdcard read/write use some app that change the sd cache size to higher value to increase that.

I really don't want to ignore you, but S2 is much more lagfree. And it seems that the GPU is really much slower than on S2. Please don't be an "Apple fan" who is just talking that "oo it's perfect, better than anything". NO. It (I mean the Note) has bugs. Serious ones.
It has been said millions of times...
The note has nearly twice the pixel of the s2 so it has to work much more for every frame...

You don't have to wait that long.
I'm blown away at how fast the lastest custom roms are (the XLA3 ones).
Samsung keeps releasing new ROMS every couple of weeks, and the Note just gets better and better with each one.

Exactly. Everyone knows that the S2 is currently a little bit snappier than the Note with stock ROMs. But the S2 has been out so much longer, so it's hardly surprising.
In a few weeks' time, the Note will be snappier on Gingerbread, let alone ICS.
You could say that manufacturers should get ROMs in better working order before they release the phones, but that's just the way software is moving in general (test out software on paying customers).

Note is pretty fast but ain't as smooth my dead S2. It's remarkable that Exynos can handle a large amount of pixels without slowing down that much.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Remember the S2 has to power 800x480=384000 pixels. While the Note has to power 1280x800=1024000 pixels.
This is 2,666666 times more!
Benchmarks dont mean anything. my S2 can score twice higher but it performs worse.

Hello fellow XDA'ers,
I've had my Desire HD for about 10 months & although it's perfectly fine and indeed excellent, apart from the below average battery, I just got bored.
So, a friend of mine has a SGS & I am thinking of swapping with him...
1)Will I notice the RAM difference?
2)Does the pentail screen bother much?
3)How's the sense rom on the SGS?
So what are your thoughts? Did any one convert from a DHD to SGS?
Thank you.
Dont do it! I came from galaxy s to dhd......dhd feels snappier nd much better screen. Plus the sense interface on the dhd is much better than the stupid touchwiz bull**** of the sgs.....wait until u see the browser resolution as well! Horrible....wait.....did i mention samsung's kies software? Well it suckssssss......thats when it really identifies ur phone....although i lost arnd 300$ sellng the sgs nd gettng the dhd.....im not sorry i got rid of that thng
For me SGS is much better than DHD... My gs still perfect even if it is dropped while in mine DHD there are no levers of the volume because were detached.
Perhaps you'll notice that the ram is less but this minority will be satisfied by the fantastic display Super Amoled! The GS also while having 3 megapixel less than camera of dhd take best pictures and video runs much more fluid and detailed ... Just watch it on youtube... Then gs is much more customizable in terms of hacks.
So... Make your choice...
Yeah.
Sgs is a great phone. Borrow your mates for a few days and see.

I think if you want a phone in such a range you can wait a 2-3 months as samsung is going to launch galaxy w on September 1 Berlin event it will have a 1.4 ghz single core processsor and 3.7 inch screen! If u can't wait for it thrnvuo for galaxy s as it is the best in its price range!

I've seen at least two side by side comparisons between the Vivid and the Galaxy Skyrocket; and the Vivid definitely plays second fiddle to it, too.
roms play a big role in scores. htc roms are some of the most graphical. try on a less graphical rom like samsung is using and it will prolly be pretty close imo
Probably doesn't help that we're underclocked to 1.2 GHz stock. Once we have root and can overclock back up to 1.5 GHz+ results should be more respectible.

My opinion is that they mean basically nothing. Having a great benchmark doesn't always mean great results in everyday use.

In every day usage yea doesn't really matter considering I played with the Samsung Skyrocket at the store and the UI Stuttered and this one runs quite smooth. Yea I can't wait for the custom kernels so we can actual get the Real Speed out of this CPU considering if I recall the Samsung is the same exact chip just clocked up to 1.5ghz so my guess is we should actually probably be able to get this phone slightly faster than 1.5ghz considering it is underclocked unless samsung out of the box OC'd the chip which would mean lot's of returns. Either way can't wait to see some optimized Sense and Custom kernels and see what this thing can really do. I also keep forgetting our pixel resolution is quite a bit better which most likely is effecting part of the scoring.

Why the hell would a manufacturer OC a chip? These chips are designed to run at 1.5 ever since qualcomm showed these chips, HTC decided to underclock these to 1.2ghz because of may be battery reasons.
This phone leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to smoothness, my dad has an evo 3d and for some reason that rom seems to run much smoother than this phone, it seems like this rom is lacking in that department. I am sure it is software given they are using exact same hardware. The phone is smooth but not as smooth as the evo 3d. I would root this thing in a heartbeat when root is available.

The wonders of OC and optimization eh.
How does the device actually feel? Felt pretty smooth when I briefly played with it. I wish people would put less weight in benchmarks.
Sent from my Galaxy S2
It is quite smooth actually. I have never actually noticed any slow downs at all as opposed to other people. Plus we more than likely once it is rooted will get the cpu OC past the actual Stock speed the processor is supposed to be so that should make things that much smoother. Granted at the expense of battery life but still if you UC when the screen is off you shouldn't feel it too badly unless you are Constantly on the phone in which case you would probably want to UC it when the screen is on too.

Battery still meh if you are a heavy user, and benchmarks still affected by thermal throttling...it's hard to get a proper gauge though because the devices that the N4 is compared to change from graph to graph...I wish there was a consistent comparison with the LG Optimus G
+ve about the build quality and apparently it has been dropped a few times without issues...so could be not bad depending on how it's dropped. Running stock android is also another +

Raw hardware specs do not simply cease to 'exist' because software benchmarks show certain numbers.
We know the specs of the device, the hardware in it is more powerful than the majority of the phones out there, calling this OTA conclusive is still flawed.
Wait a while, or have fun joining in on the XDA arguing that I see as still pointless. The HTC One X forums taught me a lot about benchmarks...

The problem we're having is with the battery life, not the benchmarks. It's been proven that the poorer benchmark results are due to the CPU overheating and throttling down - which in turn gives it poor battery life - 5 hours video playback vs 8 hours on the Optimus G.
That's why people are dying over the new benchmark results, to see if it still throttles down or not.

Agreed. Call it early indicator if you will. If the benchmarks shows abnormal activities compared to sibling LG Optimus G than we have a problem. It also possible that Engadget's N4 has thermal problems like Anandtech but they didn't put in the fridge to proved thermal problems since both websites early benchmarks are equally crap compared to The Verge.

I hear what you're saying, but no other phone runs 4.2 from Google does it? I'd wait till later this week when we have many rooted devices, custom ROMS/kernels and what not.
The software HTC shipped the One X running on was an unoptimized mess (which also had heat issues).
The people storming around shouting conclusive and saying the phone has hardware issues only serve to make people fearful at this stage where it is too early to be conclusive of any hardware issues. Software issues will be aplenty on a launch of new hardware.

But there is a problem if the performance in benchmarks does not add up to what the 'specs' say.
It's like building two identical computers, put one in a different case...one running windows vista and say one running windows 8...
If the hardware is identical, the benchmarks should be VERY similar, if not there is something wrong with the build, hardware, drivers, software etc...and it is not working to it's potential.
This is quite alarming. Agreed with everyone that something is wrong. That's a huge difference: 4984 vs 7628. This might potentially make me wait to see if this some kind of bug. I mean in all seriousness, if I have the same hardware I would like it to perform the same. Google won't admit any wrong doing here either....that's good for ya. Let's hope they see the issue and try to find a fix.
Ugh. What a way to start my day....
new 3,4 kernel guys...give to google some times to fix that.
Well I just ordered one because I'm not really bothered by benchmarks. This is the first phone running on 4.2 and it's powerful enough as it is.
One thing I will point out is (from what I've seen) the N4 beats the Optimus G consistently in Geekbench 2 posting scores of over 2000. We need to ignore the browser benchmarks as chrome is not as well optimised as the old stock browser on Android.
We need to wait and see how the phone matures in time, I don't think there is a hardware issue here everyone is panicking over 2 phones that don't quite match each other...I know if my N4 goes wrong due to some unknown issue I know I can get a new one sent to me from Play so it's not really something that is going to bothering me.
Anyway, who buys their phone on benchmarks?! Are you benching it 24/7? No, so what's the need for you to see how a phone performs in tasks that you would never ever ask it to do in real world situations...
Came across this site:
lwn.net/Articles/524631/rss
(Guess I can't post direct links for now)
Can anyone explain what this CPU isolation actually means and how it translates to actual performance and benchmark scores?

Hi there!
Have been using SII for about a year and a half now.
I don't know how but recently i have got tired of this 4 inchy and
really want a bigger screen.
And I'm getting an offer to exchange it with galaxy note. On paper galaxy note seems
ted powerful and with a better display as well.
But what I'm really concerned about is the real life difference in performance. I have heard from some
friends that NOTE is actually on a bit slower side than SII.
Would love to hear from guys who have used both the phones and please suggest should I go for the exchange.
Thanks.

It's barely noticeable slower. Specially in screens transitions and scrolling through lists that have images.
Maybe because of the higher resolution of the screen.
But in my opinion totally worth the upgrade
The bigger screen makes watching videos and playing games an amazing experience
Total worth the upgrade mate.

Thats what I'm really concerned about. The reslotion of the galaxy note is almost 70 to 80 percent more than galaxy SII.
Theoretically that should mean galaxy note require around 1.8 to 2 Ghz dual core processor if I'm right to perform as snappier as galaxy SII.
And that's why there's a lag in UI and general use I guess.
I really like the s pen and the screen size.
But I do feel HD resolution is too much of an asking for a dual core.
Please correct and guide me if I'm wrong.
Waiting for your comments eagerly.
As far as I know, the pixels are "moved around" by the GPU , not the CPU.
So the processor has nothing to do with the lag.

The pixels are rendered by the GPU, not the CPU, but yes, they are also the same, and it's the reason for the difference.
It can get pretty smooth tough. Don't worry about performance. You won't have any trouble

Got Note finally. And after a month of use I don't think I would look back. Cheers.
Yes, the note is slower than s2. I also can't use android 4.1.2 as it's extremely laggy (this may happen only with my note).
The phones screen size makes it impossible to comfortably use this phone with one hand, so You mostly have to use both of Your hands.
If You're aiming for a bigger screen or for the spen's precision I would definitely recommend You this phone.
I must say I wouldn't go back to s2,as the spen is very important for me.

I really like the spen. But the lag problem is an issue with me too. I flashed indian version first and a few days back
I flashed the Uk xxlt9 firmware(obviously aftera full wipe). But I dont see much difference in those 2 versions. I guess jelly bean
is really too much for this phone(atleast stock one). I tried cyanogenmod too but I really missed the neat built in features of the spen so I
moved back to stock jelly bean. But its really annoying when a 200 dollar phone beats it in benchmarks and general use. Or may be I'm
expecting too much off this device.
After a month or so of use.. This is what I feel-
Stock jelly bean- Battery life is good(as long as u keep the screen off )
Typing and general UI is way too laggy.
Touchwiz is beautiful ( I know am the only one but I really like the design and transitions)
Spen is nicely integrated and snote is nicely designed. I use it a lot personally (only after it opens a decade to open)
Cyanogenmod 10.3 nightlies- Fluid and really usable. Sleek.
Flat and boring untill you dont use a theme.
Camera not at par with stock jb.
Huh.. A lot of writing i guess. These were my observations. But what I really want is stock experience with cyanogenmod like speed.
Is there anyone who's in same sort of situation like me.

Finally someone that has the same problem with JB.
Man, I usually have 120-150 apps installed (I have to have them) and any JB ROM is UNUSABLE for me. Even stock JB laggs, after restoring my apps it's....agh If the phone wasn't so expensive I would throw it against the wall. Why did JB work on SGS2 like a charm and on the Note it sucks so much?
That's why I had to use ICS. It doesn't have the Spen hovering & scrolling features (which I really miss ) , but it's fast and almost lag free.
However CM10.2 is the fastest I've used so far. I'm really astonished, it's a beta ROM and it's way better than official one (WTF?).
I bought this phone for the Spen and that's why I'm using it a lot. I only hope that the Spen won't start to fell out of the phone as it's getting easier to take it out.
I think I will never switch from the note series, as the spen is veeery important for me (well, maybe when there will be some other phone with thin stylus )

Yeah, give me too hehe.
I would like to see all those hovering etc. stuff. Maybe it will be possible if official 4.3 comes out to note 2 and then it will be ported to our note.
But I don't think so
And the throwing part.. I feel exactly like you.. Lost brothers? Lol
I dont see 4.3 coming to this lovely device anytime soon. But the main point here shouldn't be just running after the latest android version. It should be making the current firmware as best as it can be. How come GB and ICS be faster than JB, no one knows except samsung or god. Lol

Ok, the older android versions don't require so good specs, but there shouldn't be such a big difference between ics and jb. I hope the notes 2 official android 4.3 will be ported to our old note 1.

Post up your AnTuTu Benchmarks! (Snapdragon 805's ... well Exynos too I guess haha. Darn you with the 55k+'s!!!)
(In this format please to keep it organized. It's ideal to just copy/paste it and fill in your numbers.)

Snapdragon 805's dream with a stock kernel. Even with a custom kernel, Exynos will always stomp.
What carrier are you running your international variant on?
Great score by the way! Best I've seen. Well of course, exynos lol.

49,863 on STOCK KERNEL running FireKatv2 ROM!!!
Almost 50K on STOCK Kernel!!!!
Anyone break 49K on stock kernel? State your ROM you're using too...
This is all for fun, but has anyone hit 49K on the stock kernel?
I've tested all the available ROM's on the other N4 in my household and none has has hit 49K except, FireKatv2.
Show me! :good::good:
100% Stock rom and Stock kernel no root
I dont get it. I have been on a quest to make my phone better since the note 2. I always hit XDA and tinker and learn as much as I can but sometimes I see scores and I see people really excited about the "speed increase and battery life improvements with new roms etc, and I dont get it because for example this is my score without any work on the phone at all. My battery life is about 7.5 hours screen time with gps on and sync on all the time. Screen set to auto. Dont get me wrong I am a lover of modding and hate all the bs that carriers and sammy puts on the phones I am here because I love to work on my phone but I see no real difference right now even maybe I slow the phone down if I do anything to it. Whats going on? I remember on my note 3 I was able to see some improvement on my benchmarks over stock (not by much) and a little better battery life but again not a huge difference. Also I thought I should mention that on echoe rom I was able to score 24 to 25,000 on quadrant clocked at 2.2 ALL THE TIME I once even scored 27,000 when I was overclocked at 2.5. How come I never break 26,000 even tho I am clocked at 2.7 now. Also why am I scoring so high over modded phones
That's an excellent score! Well in your case it just proves that the stock software isn't terrible. It works....Simple as that. As for the modded peeps with custom ROM's, a lot of them have so much crap on there apps wise and have it heavily tweaked with wanam/xposed where it is really weighing down their phones.
I also have a theory about the CPU's in that they are not all created equal. Remember with the Note 3's there was a prompt in the dialer where you could go to a secret menu to see what type of processor you had. I think it was from 0-7 or something and the closer the number was to 7 meant you had a more efficient CPU, but not friendly / "as tolerant" to overclock as oppose to someone with a number closer to "0" which meant that it was more power hungry and more tolerant to over clocking. If you search for it you'll find what I'm talking about. ...
Anyway, I think we have the same thing going on here....where some of us just happen to have stronger CPU's. It's just like car engines.....not all are the same as every one of them have their own unique character. I remember when I got my AMG C Class and my buddy had the same one but a year newer. He used to smoke me (stock) where I had intake/exhaust/flashed chip. I just didn't get it. Sometimes you just end up with a [email protected]$$ CPU coming from a good batch LOL.
Another example is microSD cards...you can buy the same brand / type and all, but will always have different results. My Samsung 64GB PRO is faster than my other Samsung 64GB Pro that I have in another N4. Same phone, same chip...different speeds.
You have an awesome piece. Great score! I can't wait to break 50K's on a stock kernel!
