[Q] Best Kernel? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the best kernel to go with teamhacksung's build 14 rom?

If you want more energy savings - MIDNIGHT
More responsive and tweaks - Talon or Semaphore
I have Midnight

Thanks,
I have another question, I tried using the kernel flasher but it doesn't work, so do I flash the kernel via odin?
Sorry for being a noob

yes
Do it like this:
Boot your phone into recovery mode by holding the volume down+menu+power button down.
Then open odin click on pda and choose the kernel.
The kernel has to be a tar file.
Uncheck re-partition.
Connect your phone to the pc while its in download mode.
Click on start.
Done

Glitch is also very good
BTW, there isn't a semaphore kernel for teamhacksung's, is there???

I'm using Devil_3.0-13_BFS_V(R)_LiveOC_DeepIdle_LED which is a modified version
of the cyanogen.

i use the same kernel, but he can't use the "Devil_3.0-13" one, as the name says it is for the build13.
DerTeufel updated it in his post on the development formum.
for me this kernel works best.
and you dont have to flash the kernel via Odin. just download the zip file and put it on your internal SD card -> recovery (power button - reboot - recovery / vol-down-home-power combo) -> install zip from sd card -> select the zip file -> reboot system

Semaphore kernel is very efficient

Can I use Semaphore with ICS 4.0.3 rc3.1?

It's working for me, but my battery life sucks big time. I have to charge twice a day. Also, Wifi and 3g meters sometimes go from blue to gray with no apparent reason, and some of my calls drop as soon as I press the dial button.
So that's why I'm asking about another kernel. Do you guys have any ideas?
Thanks!

[Q] About Semaphore kernel flashing

hi,
i have stock Galaxy s i9000 with 2.3.4 XXJVP.. i want to install Semaphore kernel... hoping it will improve overall performance and give even better performance with games like asphalt 6,,..
all i want to know is that can flash it over my stock with SGS kernel flasher??? or are there any other pre requirements for it???
or is there any better kernel for playing games lag free??
THX
Ny reply??? :-(
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
You can install this Kernel via Odin easily, and YES it will improve your overall performance
Ps.:Flash Gingerbread 2.3.6 its really good
Remember to disable lagfix.
The best kernels for playing games on gingerbread roms are the Semaphore Bigmem kernels. But if you really want lag-free and super smooth gaming, you should consider using froyo 2.2.1 roms.
Oh, and to answer your question, yes you can flash the kernel using the kernel flasher app, but it's probably safer to use Odin.
Thx fr the replies...
I would want to know which version of semaphore to download..??? Thrre are two versions.. 2.1 & a bm version ...

How do you do this?
you should download the RIGHT kernel, if you have JVP download the kernel for JVP ,not the kernel for JVZ.
for gaming and performance TalonDEV kernel is the best
Semaphore kernels link
Hey can someone give me the link to semaphore jvt 1.9.2 kernel?
TIA

If you dont know, you probably dont have to. My guess is you have never used lagfix or ext4. if you think you might have, go to cwm recovery - shut down phone, hit the 3 button combo (power + home + volume up) until samsung galaxy boot screen appears and leave the buttons immediately. in the recovery mode, go to advanced and see if theres any option for Lagfix or Ext4.

No you should not do that. Use a kernal that is meant for your firmaware. If you want to flash semaphore 2.1.1, first upgrade your firware to JVZ using Odin. The are plenty of links to this firware under General.
This could be a silly question
As per the SamMobile.com the JVZ released on November 2011
so how comes this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908) postdate is 6 June 2011 ?
My Base version is I9000XXJVT

can I use above way to root my phone ?

Hey sorry have been away. Well you should be able to flash a kernel but there arent many out there and i am a little wary of flashing a kernel as they are all in a very experimental stage. Moreover, i find teamhacksung's (pawitp's) build to be more stable and the aries kernel was a whole lot more better. hated glitch the moment i flashed it.
Happy flashing...

Flashing A Kernel Advice

Only had my Galaxy Note & A smart phone for a week and loving it. But i would like some advice. I currently have a root stock rom & running the AbyssNote v4.2 kernel and i'm seeing alot of drainage on the battery. I want to try the franco kernel, but i'm unsure as to the best proceedure for flashing the new kernel. Also i would like to change to a different rom, either Cassies XtraLite or Litening Rom.
Can someone please guide me the best procedure, once i've gone through it once it wont be a problem then
Many thanks
I want also to try the franco kernel plz help us if it is safe to flash in ics lpy
The best way to flash a kernel when you have root access is to use mobile odin. You can download the latest franko kernel from here.Put it you int.sd,open mobile odin, load the kernel in kernel tab and hit flash.
EDIT:If the downloaded kernel is in zip, extract it till you see zimage and use it in mobile odin.

[Q] How can you say if your using a unsafe ROM?

Hello i just got curious about my phone if i have been using a wrong ROM because i just some forum talking about the "CMW.zip" I use that application for rooting my phone , in short using "CMW.zip" means ur using a unsafe rom? hmm help please im just a newbie ....
and here is my kernel version : 3.0.15- 1068447 _ [email protected] #3 _ SMP PREEMPT thu sep 6 21:49:19 KST 2012
you are in ics and stock kernel. it's the kernel that's unsafe for wipes and the cwm. zip file you talking about has a tendency to brick ics devices. so don't use it anymore. I guess you are rooted, so the best option is to install a safe kernel like philz or hydracore using Mobile Odin and be safe

if its rooted, there is no problem. Just move to a safe kernel. no need to unroot it again. Just don't use that file to root again. 2nd time mite not be lucky

what is this stock feeling?
so it means that one I need to install is hydracore or notecore for the smooth gaming?
stock feeling means as the phone is on official software. philz is a samsung kernel with added recovery options and safe.
hydracore has a lot of tweaks m. you can try hydracore and check if it suits you. If not the you can revert back to philz same way.

yes you can. use the zip file
Hello again sir/s
i have a question it is safer to install Clockworkmod from the market and then flash ??
or it is just the same with the CMW.zip file?
(should I post it with another thread?)
never use the CWM.zip file. Just install a safe kernel and it will have CWM recovery inbuilt. i dont have much faith in the market one either
now on the other side. your signature shows you are running hydracore kernel.. why are you asking for CWM.zip again? its inbuilt in this kernel.

[Q] I need a little help with upgrading

Hi, i have a samsung galaxy S i9000 and i'm kinda new with it
all i want is to make it faster because it runs very slow , i've seen youtube videos about testing some games on the same phone but some of them won't even open up. i got more interested in upgrading it and started searching around on how to. So here is what i want to do:
I want to upgrade it by changing my Rom in Cyanogen 9 and kernel Devil 3. I don't even know if it is good but i'm sure its better than gingerbread.
Can some1 help me out with it , maybe post a little tutorial how to do it.
Aditional info :
-I don't want so save anything from it
-It's rooted
-Firmware version: 2.3.6
-Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-i9000XXJVU-CL851880 [email protected] #2

CyanogenMod (CM) 9 is really outdated. If you want a good, fast ROM I can recommend Slimbean. It's largely based on CM. You can find more info here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060374
Detailed instructions can be found in that thread and on the slimrom website.
Coming from Gingerbread you'll need to install CM10 first, otherwise you will lose your IMEI, which will render your phone unable to make or place calls. Once on CM10 you can then flash Slimbean.
Or using an newer version of CM

Will semaphore replace current ROM (cm10)??
Did some1 had any problems with semaphore kernel ? like bricking the phone? is it stable?

You flash semaphore the same way you flashed your rom and it will replace stock cm kernel your rom will stay the same make sure you flash the right version to avoid any bricking. It makes cm run better. Overclock depends on your phone some people can overclock high some not so much. Download semaphore changer governor to sio and liveoc to 110% and set min frequenci 400Mhz. That should be enough to make it supper smooth

I don't get it why do you want to flash another kernel? Aren't you happy now with smooth CM10.1x? Here on this forum are many flashing freaks who flash and overclock their phones until the device completely crashes.
CM10.1x is excellent already way it is, if you want to even improve it (first of all to get about double battery life) just upgrade it to the newest nightly version of CM10.2 tomorrow (build 20130828), it will finally have all bigger bugs fixed. Very soon, stable CM.10.2 build will be released out of this nightly. This is the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2385178
If you want to do it, just mind that the developer (pawitp) doesn't mention anymore installing gapps, so this would be the workflow from your present ROM:
Do a Nandroid Backup of your CM10.1.2 build before the upgrade!
Go to CWM recovery mode and check first in "install zip" if your zips of the CM10.2 and Gapps for 4.3 are visible on your internal SD card
Wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache
wipe dalvik cache (under "advanced")
Install the nightly ROM zip from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Install Gapps for CM10.2 (Android version 4.3) while still in recovery
Restore /data from Nandroid Backup (the update will wipe your /data) while still in recovery
Reboot system
The partition layout of CM10.2 (beginning from 20130816 nightly) differs of that of CM10/CM10.1. The first install will wipe your /data to switch to the new layout, but after that you may use CWM to restore/backup data of CM10/10.1/10.2 (in CWM recovery under "advanced restore" then "restore data" from your CM10.1 nandroid backup)
This way done, you should have all data, wallpaper, widgets and apps like in your CM10.1 right after the reboot. And wait until tomorrow, when the 20130828 nightly gets released. I've been using "buggy" builds (nightlies between 24 and 27 Aug) without any problems, but some people had problems with them.

[Q] Problem with SpeedMod and Odin with my Galaxy Note (N7000)

Hi,
I've followed the guide to install the speedmod kernel on my Galaxy Note on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673072, using odin, but I have a problem: after Odin said that all was good, the phone is unable to reboot and for 5-6 seconds stay with the screen with the "yellow triangle" and then shut-down.
How can I solve this problem?Or come back to original kernel?
Please help me!!

You 100 % sure it was ICS? Install the rom you were on again using odin. Its will put back the original kernel. Just dont wipe while on ICS stock kernel.

I've check with my brother that has the same original rom (he has a Samsung S2)...and I discover that I had Android 4.1.2 that means JB! :/
Have I to install the JB rom with odin in the same way?
Thanks a lot for your help!

I've done what you said and ALL WORKS NOW!!
Thank you so much for your help!
Can you suggest me a good rom to install, without doing same errors!? (maybe this could be my last question! )
In this case you just have to flash the JB Speedmod kernel the same way you flash previous one. The phone is not booting because of having an ICS kernel on JB rom.

If you want all the Samsung features then check AryaMod rom.
If you are OK with AOSP, cm 10.2 or omni 4.4 are great roms. It's up to you to try and decide which one suits you the best.
This time for rooting and cwm, use Philz kernel. Methods and explanation in his thread in the Original Development Section.

Sure, I'm very ok with AOSP and I was thinking about cm 10.2!
Please, clear me up if first of all I have to install the Philz kernel or the rom cm 10.2! (that wasn't the last question! )
First root using Philz kernel.. Then back up your efs folder. Then flash the rom or your choice. Custom rom can only be flashed using cwm recovery.
AryaMod v3 is very good and smooth stock LTA based TW rom. I'm on it since it was issued. As the owner set v4 will be issued in few days. You can try it.
