Yesterday I got an mhl adapter (a Samsung one).. however whenever the phone begins to display to HDMI, overall performance goes down to the point that any interaction with the phone lags pretty severely.. Has anyone else faced the same issue?

Yes I have.
You gotta remember, just how much more work the Note is having to do in order to render images on two displays at once when you have the MHL adapter hooked up. Both devices still have the exact same GPU in them, so you're asking the same hardware to do completely different work.
Example:
The SGS2's screen resolution is 800*480 on its own, so that's 38400 pixels, or 76800 pixels when the MHL adapter is hooked up (800*480)x2. So, even the SGS2, when rendering 76800 pixels while using the MHL adapter, is still less than what the Note renders on its own with just one screen (1280*800 = 1024000 pixels). So when you hook up the MHL adapter to the Note, and now all of a sudden the GPU is tasked with rendering 2048000 pixels, it's no wonder things start to bog down a bit...
That said, even 1080p video playback should be completely smooth, as video rendering uses a completely different engine.
So to sum up, SGS2 with MHL adapter = 76800 rendered pixels, which is less than the 1024000 rendered pixels on the Note without the MHL adapter attached (which is why it's so smooth on the SGS2). With the MHL adapter attached, the Note is having to render 2048000 pixels, which is really pushing the boundaries of what the Mali-400 is capable of.
Now about that i bought the mhl converter and i just put it on the phone without a hdmi and hooked the charger on it. I noticed the phone want even charging it was losing battery from 45% did go to 25%. Is this normal? The phone just pushes the images to mhl even without a second display to be connected to it?!?!?!?

This is due to how much processing power it takes to drive two displays at once. The phone is having to work exponentially harder, thus if the workload exceeds the power being provided by USB, it will make up the difference by drawing from the battery.
The Note's charger is 1 amp I believe. Try using the 2 amp charger from a galaxy tab instead. That should provide enough power to drive the Note on MHL, and still have enough left over for charging the battery.
I didn't notice any significant slow down when I used my mhl adaptor? I only played angry birds on my 55" plasma though, and I use it to play music. and i have a snidy chinese one not the official one.
Why is there no option to turn off mirroring on the phone. I hate having a movie playing on both screens, it is such a waste. Does ICS fix this??

The problem is that i didn't have a second display on the mhl it was only the charger but still phone was losing battery. It should recognize if another display is on it or not

I understand that the phone definitely has a lot to do, but I'm worried that my phone isn't functioning right.. Especially that it seems that there are other phones out there that don't face this problem.
If you take a look at the video in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19068253&postcount=1
And especially the part with the n64 gaming, it's clearly very smooth. Mine doesn't get anywhere near that.. The video, sound and input all lag/chop..
I was hoping to find if anyone else faced and solved this or a similar problem.. :s
Oh, and also of note is that my battery drains even while it's plugged in (but both displays are on), even though Samsung clearly states that the mhl adapter should charge the phone while in use...
It seems to me like it might be a performance issue on the phone side (I'm on stock). Any suggestions? (but preferably I'd rather not have to switch to a custom ROM, at least until a stable cyanogen mod gets released)
I don't understand why there is a 1080p output when it really laggy. Is there a way to make it 720p ?
I would assume the display lag when using an MHL - adapter should lessen a bit when ICS is released. After all, Gingerbread uses software to draw its graphics which is already in and of itself a slow process, not to mention when it has to draw two displays in software. ICS, on the other hand, can draw most things with hardware-acceleration and thus the impact on performance is much lower.
As somewhat anecdotal evidence I may offer you the fact that I have an Iconia Tab A500 which originally runs Honeycomb. Honeycomb doesn't support hardware-acceleration either, so the situation is similar. However, when I slapped an ICS ROM on it I saw a large performance-boost in almost all operations. The thing about A500 is that it also runs a dual-core CPU, has the same amount of RAM as Note, and has even the same screen-resolution.

That is not how it works.
When you plug in the mhl adapter it renders the phone screen resolution and the TV resolution. It doesn't simply double the resolution.
For example the sgs2 renders 2457600 pixels on a 1080p tv.
The note however would render 3097600 pixels in the same case.
There is higher load on the note, but nothing too extreme.

Is this safe to use on a regular basis? Does this mean if I use the Galaxy Tab charger for my Note that its battery will get charged faster? Is there any risk of fire/explosion or damage to the battery or phone if I use a charger with a higher amperage?
Simply put, MHL sucks! I'd like to strangle whoever came up with it. Bring on dedicated HDMI ports, even better HDMI with power capabilities.

Bump...
Does anyone know if this is safe to use? I can pick up a spare Galaxy Tab charger tomorrow, if it means I can replenish the Note's battery faster than it drains during HDMI hookup/output.

Nope. Stock samsung charger and stock samsung cable. I'm. Glad I charge it at night. If I had to use it while charging, I'd blow my temper very quickly. It's exasperating, the touch.
This happens to me too and I've seen other reports for it.
I'm pretty sure this has to do with the charger. Doesn't matter if it's original Samsung or not - some chargers just cause this. It happens with my stock charger - when charging from it, often the screen doesn't react at all to touch, and when it does, it's quite poor - when dragging something on the screen, the phone would think I am pressing/releasing the finger all the time. Sometimes the accuracy is way off - for example, I want to press "L" on the (QWERTY) keyboard, and will get "X" or "R" instead (letters which are nowhere near it). When I use my girlfriends LG charger, everything works almost perfect (there are still some problems but those are barely noticable). When charging via USB, this doesn't seem to happen.
So, unless you're willing to take the charger to warranty (where they might demand your phone aswell), I've found the following solutions workarounds:
1. Charge using USB. Sure, it takes much longer, but as far as I know, charging a battery slower can only be good for the battery. Won't really do if you want to game while charging, since many games will draw more power than you will get from USB.
2. Use the S-Pen. This is what I do when I need to use my phone while charging. The S-Pen doesn't ever seem to be affected by this.
3. Buy a new charger - unless you're worried it might cause your battery to explode or something, you can buy a cheap no-name charger, since even the Samsung official ones don't seem to be immune to this problem. Just make sure you are able to test it before buying, since it is a hit-or-miss thing, regardless of the brand.
I don't think it's exactly due to the charger per se, but the amount of voltage coming through it.
I used to live in an area with really bad, unstable power that had less than the standard 220V coming out of the outlet.
Whilst charging my Galaxy S the screen was incredibly unresponsive when on the charger (even if it was at 100%). As soon as I removed it from the charger, it was fine.
Using the same charger now I'm closer to town with "normal" stable power, it works fine on the charger.
I had the same problem charging the phone on my old Asus T91 netbook. It didn't put out much power via the USB ports (If I used an external DVD drive I had to use one of those cables that lets you plug into 2 USB ports for the extra power).
But the phone works fine plugged into my full powered laptop.
Maybe try a different outlet and see if that helps.

Used to happen on my evo also. Hasn't happened to me on this phone though

Hey guys.
I ordered this cord about 2 weeks ago now.
I got it in the mail today, thinking it wasn't going to work.
It was only $7 so I thought, ehh whatever
I plugged all of the cords (HDMI, Power and Charger port).
Whattya know, my phone screen is now on my television.
I already watched a movie on my television, ported full 1080p. No lag whatsoever.
Watched Netflix, no problems, full screen playback working crystal clear.
Just a couple small problems, the USB is very touchy. The screen will stay mirrored, but if you pull back the USB port even a tiny bit, it will lose the picture.
I noticed when i have the phone plugged in, my data signal diminishes significantly. I'm not sure if its because of the cord or just the crappy phone reception in my home.
I know for a fact this CANT be genuine.
I'm actually quite surprised.
For the whopping price if $7, this is a steal.
I will post a video later, don't have a camera at the moment.

I got one off of amazon for fairly cheap as well, but I found the gaming to be pretty laggy so it's been stuffed into a drawer somewhere.
Is this the one with micro-usb charging port on it? If it is,can you charge your phone if you connect charging cable to this MHL adapter while it's connected to Note2/TV? For some reason I thought that it's just like OTG cable where you phone becomes a host and outputs HDMI signal and you can't charge it out. But then I read somewhere you can. So, can you please clear it up if phone can be charged through that micro-usb port on the side (if your adapter has one)?

when you use TV-out you should set display brightness to the lowest setting, and use both an original Samsung charger and an original Samsung usb cable.
many 3rd party chargers and cables can't handle the 1.5-2A the note 2 needs for charging while using TV-out.
I'll try this also. Thanks for the link. Where are you guys getting your authentic Samsung cables and chargers? Samsung directly?

here is video showing HML running on MA7. I'm using the generic Monoprice adapter, the 5-11pin adapter, and their ultra slim with RedMere HDMI cable (signal goes one direct only).
It's not that other cable and charges don't work. The phone uses more power to convert the signal for the USB cable. Then the adapter needs power to work, so you're not getting the full 2amps being passed from the charger. On top of that, the USB may not have rating or resistance to pass the 2amps as well. Thus, what may appear as the phone not charging is really the phone battery not depleting as quickly because it's not recieving more power that the GN2 is using.
I've used cheapy cables and other chargers fine to watch videos and what not, and the phone build a charge; just not as quickly as the OEM.
I've used the OEM cable and charger, and still depleted the battery because I was runuing WiFi tether, and HML. The best I was able to do, reduce the depletion to 10% an hour.
I recommend this to save battery life. It requires root but lets you turn the screen off.

I bought the OEM MHL to HDMI cable and it stopped working after a couple of uses. And I only use the OEM charger with the cable
I tried swapping out the HDMI cable, but that didn't make any difference. Picture would not go to the TV. Is there a setting that I'm missing on the device for TV out?
I assumed the cable was defective and bought a cheap one from monoprice, but same story there, it does not work either.
no special setting. Probably a driver got borked in the phone. You may want to reflash or do a factory reset assuming you've switch cables, adapter and tried a different TV.
I bought a similar one from another seller but the pin is quite long and doesnt go in completely. Is it the same in your case?
And no im not getting anything on my hdtv :/
I have a Samsung MHL adapter that I bought to use with my OG Evo or Evo 3D, don't remember which one. I've had it for years now, and it still works great! I wish that Samsung would make something like HTC did with their Media Link HD. I still use my Evo LTE and Media Link HD to watch my TV shows on Droid TV PrimeTime. That's an awesome app that only costs $9 every 3 months. It doesn't have movies, just TV shows. It has shows from their current series though, and will record shows (from the series you've selected) just 12 hours after it airs! I only use Netflix for watching older series of shows and movies.

Hi! I am having some problems with my brand new HTC One - I connected it to my 1080p monitor using an MHL -> HDMI adapter(one of the cheap ones from Amazon) and the resolution of the screen is locked at 640x480 60Hz. There is no option on the phone to change it.
I used to use the same adapter with my Galaxy Nexus before, and it would display 720p just fine - and since the HTC One has a full HD screen I expected to use Full HD resolution over MHL as well.
Is that possible? Has anyone done it personally?
Cheers

Doesn't quite work like that m8, the S3 had similar issues, I tried on different TV's and got different results, on my LG 47inch 3D TV i get 1080 at 30hz and on my panasonic viera 32inch 3D TV i get 720 @ 60hz. So not 100% as to why but try a different TV, you may get better results, I personally couldn't find a setting to alter it.
I've been holding off buying an MHL as there was latency issues causing delay on the S3, I didn't want to waste money and get my hopes up if it was going to be the same thing on the One.
I bought the MHL 5 pin adapter few days ago and returned it today because it was simply crap. The micro usb port did not work, however the sound/video did but the battery would get drained fast I could watch 1 full movie with about 30% battery left so I had to charge after that.
I ordered the HTC media link now and will try how that works, from what I have heard and seen it seems 10x better than the MHL adapter and it should since it costs quite a bit more than the MHL adapter
Hi,
I've tested my HDMI output through a cheap eBay mhl adapter and although it does work, it is really laggy. Once plugged in, the device becomes really slow... I cannot watch a hd movie because the framerate drops alot (buffers) and than tries to catch up again making vehicles go extremely slow, than fast, than slow,....
I' m hoping this is due to the eBay adapter? Do you have different findings?

I'm sure it's adapter.
I still haven't tried that but it's kinda stupid that we don't have HDMI out and we have to go via USB - that could be a reason for lag but as I said - still haven't tried and I would say it's adapter.

So true. Thanks for the reply. I hope you're right. Cannot imagine a snapdragon 800 to get slow from mirroring.
Did anyone else try it yet and if so what performance did you get and which adapter did you use?
Just bought one of these and plan to test it out to see if I can get 3A charging. Confirmed with the manufacturer that it does in fact support 3A from the type-C port, but only 1.5A from the standard type-A port included. I will report back once tested.

Yeah - might be tough tp make any sort of external peripheral that might hook up to SATA or something that can handle the same power requirements for charging. I think these things have their own power cable internally, just like a harddrive or DVD.
Well - I've tested this thing fairly well now and can report it does pretty great. I can get a full charge from around 10-15% in about an hour and it reports as delivering a true 3A using the Current Monitor app. Still maybe not quite as good as the OEM charger, but as close as anything I have tried so far.
