I'm trying to root my p990h with SuperOneClick and i can't get it to work, my phone is on stock froyo 2.2, i'm using the usb driver and method from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037751 at first i had trouble with the drivers provided, they wouldn't work properly for W7, i changed to Win XP and they worked just fine, then i ran SuperOneClick, click root, it does everything, reboots the phone and just hangs there, i downloaded a root check app and says phone not rooted... i've tried it several times.
Is there any other method for 2.2? i'd like to get cwm and custom roms/kernels...
Tnx for your help!
Hmm have you checked if you have superuser on your phone? If not then try again following this thread and selecting the psneuter option:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182
Yeah, there is no SU on the phone, i'm going to try that psneuter option, tnx.
The gingerbreak app worked fine to root my phone when I was running foyo.

Hello!
Did you use the latest Version from shortfuse.org?
While you are on Froyo you could also try gingerbreak apk (don't have a link hand right now).
Superoneclick is the easiest option to root existing Stock ROM. Important is to enable "USB Debug-Mode" from Settings -> Apps.
If you want to use custom roms (which are rooted already), the easiest option is just to put the rom on your sd-Card, flash CWM and install the rom via CWM.

Today I decided to root my captivate and was unsuccessful with the super one click. I then decided to do it manually with the update.zip. After I finished rebooting with recovery mode I saw the su app. I then tried to use titanium backup and it said that it could not get root permission. Could someone please help me figure out what went wrong and help me get a successful root so I can enable normally apps.

Did you enable USB Debugging for the one click method? Is your captivate I896? More info please.

What ROM are you running?
Titanuim Backup probably wasn't given su permissions.
1. Have you tried rebooting it. Sometimes all it needs is a simple reboot and when you start TB, it will ask for su permissions.
2. Go to superuser. If you see titanium backup, click on it, forget, and reboot.
Just oneclickstock, load your ROM, and root again.
Maybe it's an app that's getting in the way?

Ok thanks I'll try that and I am running the stock JH7 ROM
Odin worked but I'm trying to use Super One Click, I get to where it says "running rageagainstthecage" and then it loops I have tried doing what it says in the OP and it has not worked. How do I fix this.

ODIN must be open before you connect phone in download mode
I used a different one click root and it worked thanks for the help.
Tried SuperOneClick using both methods and it didn't work. Any suggestions?
I also would like to know this before I update.

I couldn't get it to work either... had to revert back to 2.2 and root using Super One Click from there to restore back to my CM7 backup.
I would suggest waiting for superoneclick to be updated to support gingerbread.
Yep, that's what I was going to do but was hoping someone had a way beforehand so I could my backups going again
Install the Gingerbread update using a custom recovery, then install this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 BEFORE rebooting.
Or if you want to root manually, follow the instructions for rageagainsthecage in my signature.

Tried to root manually with your instructions w/ rageagainstthecage but its not cooperating... Once I run rageagainstthecage, it will exit out of shell, then USB bugging dissapears on the N1 notification bar, and can't get it back without rebooting the N1, also it won't show up in windows device manager until N1 is rebooted...
Did you use this method to root your phone with 2.3.3 or did you flash the update then flash the other update to get root?
Thanks,
How did you revert back to 2.2? What Passimg.zip did you use? Or are you unlocked?

I flashed the update then flashed then flashed the other file I linked to. If rageagainstthecage doesn't work, try the newer exploit (psneuter).

No need to unlock the bootloader. Just download the file, rename it to PASSIMG.zip, put it on the root of your SD card and boot into the bootloader. It will scan the file for a minute or so and then ask if you want to flash it. Just hit the up volume button to flash.
I've got what appears to be temp root with rage ($ changes to #), but I can't get the system to mount as rw, which is wierd...

It comes up with the message "Main Version is Older!" "Update Fail!"
My phone is not rooted and on official 2.3.3 flashed through stock recovery via update.zip
EDIT: Used first method, reflashed with passimg.zip (frg33) then updated one by one back to fgr83g, rooted (superoneclick) installed amon_ra, recovery via rom manager, put 2.3.3 gingerbread update on SD as update.zip, also put the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip on SD.
Flashed 2.3.3 update via amon_ra recovery (had to turn off signature verification), once it reset (not rebooted) back to recovery picked to flash zip, picked su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, (had to turn off signature verification again), rebooted, and now have root!! Now i can finally restore my apps
Worked great!! Thanks efrant!!!

First off, this is the first Samsung I've ever rooted (for a friend). I have experience on HTC, Moto, and LG and from what I've read the Captivate isn't much different. So I rooted the phone with Superoneclick (after attempting manual root but my computer thought the rage file was a virus, so I'm now on my laptop) and attempted to enable non-market apps. It always fails and I noticed that somewhere in the code it's saying that it doesn't have root shell. So I tried running root shell several times and it always freezes until I give up and cancel it. So I decided to go ahead and make a backup before I start messing with anything that I may not be able to reverse (manually allowing non-market apps).
I downloaded Rom Manager, flashed Clockworkmod recovery and rebooted....into stock recovery. I've tried installing different versions of Clockwork with no luck either. From what I've read, that SHOULD work. Am I wrong? Maybe I'm overlooking something. Rom Manager shows that I have the most current version installed. Am I supposed to do something special to install a custom recovery? Thanks and please don't flame.

Easiest advice would be to odin 1 click back to stock and start over if thats acceptable.
Make sure you have the latest busybox installed
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
When rom manager boots you into stock recovery go to "reinstall packages" twice, that will boot up cwm. All rom manager does is download an update.zip that contains cwm and you have to manually flash it the way I described.
If the phone is running froyo and you try to reinstall packages that aren't a signed zip you will get a e: signature verification error use this to work around that http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
When you install Rom manager and install clockworks it will reboot to normal recovery, there you hit install, or flash package i cant remember exactly. You might need to do it once or twice before it goes in to clockwork.
Thanks everyone. The 2nd time worked like a charm....now to allow non-market apps and unlock it.

I was able to allow non-market apps but non of the automated apps or programs can seem to unlock the phone. I do not have a T-Mobile sim card to test but I believe I've found a way to unlock it using a hex editor. Anyone know of an app or other method to test to see if it's unlocked (without a T-Mobile sim card)?

Enter this code in your dialer:

Ok, here's what I get:

Network Lock

Network Subset Lock

SP Lock

CP Lock

...so I guess I'm good to go, thanks!

Unluss you've flashed a none rooted ROM, you shouldn't need to Root it again. Try to plug and "ASK for Root permissions" in flashtools. at anyrate if you look at the flashtools menu, all you need is there for root, JIT and xrecovery.
ALSO, Never EVER update the busybox, it's just gonna cause you grief. at any rate, the most updated busybox is included with a rooted Custom ROM.
BUT, if you really have to, be sure to wipe cache and Dalvik and set permissions in recovery.
He flashed original 2.1 again, so he has to root if he wants to install a custom ROM again.
@syuk84:
Use SOC 1.7, and do the following:
Start the program.
Click root, but don´t plug the phone yet.
Wait until it says "waiting for device", and then plug the phone with enabled USB Debugging.
That´s it.

Most stock kernels avail for flash are already rooted. That's why i asked him to "ask permission" in flashtools. To check for root.
Besides, he's already flashing with Flashtools. Why would he need to use SOC? the root button is right there.

Hi... I've been trawling through the forums but found nothing specific to my phone. I recently received an update on my RAZR i to JB (bootloader unlocked). However, I didn't realise I'd be in danger of losing root access (I know now!)... hence didn't try any rootkeeper programs etc. If I go into ADB I get error "Segmentation fault" when running SU. Anyone know how to restore root access please?

Thanks for the tip but I've lost root so can't install busybox... and didn't have it installed before. Just tried flashing CWM for Razr i through fastboot and that didn't work properly either. Now device is not even found through ADB. Really need some good advice before I brick the thing!
Had my su backuped with rootkeeper on ICS 32. Worked like a charme when upgrading to ICS 40, but when i installed the JB OTA, i can't restore the su anymore (rootkeeper says all is restored successfully, but no root at all).
I still have the su-backup in the system partition, but when trying to access I get the same "segmentation fault" error.
My BL is still locked, so i'm just curious about the error and if there is any workaround to fix it...

Forget ADB atm, you need to re-flash the whole ROM first. Download RSD 6.14, take 91.2.26001.Retail.en.EU - 4.1.2 ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1936512 and flash it first. It flashes CWM as well and pushes root files up. You you will need then is to boot to CWM recovery and install RAZRiRoot2.zip.

Thanks for your help. Have downloaded RSD 6.14 and it recognised my device (or something at least... it says N/A for all info etc). Am currently on 91.2.26001.Orange.en.GB so should I download that ROM from the link you sent or doesn't it really matter? Is a factory reset at this stage advisable or would that not really solve anything with regards to getting root back? Also note - ADB does recognise my device... when I tried to flash CWM it somehow switched off USB debugging. Still have Segmentation Fault on running su though.

Thanks a lot. This totally solved my problem. In fact as ADB was recognising my device I decided not to use RSD 6.14 and used the FlashAndRoot script included in the 91.2.26001.Retail.en.EU - 4.1.2 package. Am now on Jelly Bean and have root access.
