[Q] Confused Completly about how to do update? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am so sorry for being so stupid to ask,but m left with no option, but to ask.
I have SGH gt-i9000.
I have it working.
I use t-mobile USA
But I want to update it fully.
Have no clue how to do it.
Need elaborated steps which will tell me how can i make the best use of it.
I am actually looking for the most stable and reliable version for my phone which lets me keep it working smooth free of all bugs. I would really appreciate if some of you genius can help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Look at video on samfirmware. com and youtube, read stickies in xda, stock jvu with andip's theme and semaphore kernel is fast and rock solid.

First of all, you need to download and install Kies to have the latest drivers for your phone. (You can get kies from Samsung's official webpage) Then download Odin. The latest version is 1.83 afaik. Then you need to download a proper firmware for your phone, which you can do at sammobile.com under the firmwares tab. (you need to register to be able to download, it takes half a minute). After that, extract the firmware using winrar or something like that. You should have a few files which you have to put in Odin, you can find many guides for that on how to do it and what options to tick. You have to put your device into download mode - first switch off (pull the sim card and external sd, as it might cause some errors while flashing), then hold the home-volume down-power keys for a few seconds. You will enter download mode. Before plugging in your phone to your computer, make sure no part of kies is running on your pc (use task manager). Some drivers might install. After that, Odin should "see" your device, a yellow box will appear with the port used. If all the files are at the right place, start flashing (make sure your device has at least 70 percent battery). Only unplug your phone after it has fully booted. Done!
Now you only need to apply a custom kernel. I recommend Semaphore. Search for it on the forums. Switch off your phone again and put it into download mode. Reset Odin. Put the downloaded semaphore kernel into the pda box. Plug in your phone. Flash. Done!
Please hit thanks if I helped

Downgrading from JPH no 3 buttons combo to JM1

Hi,
Is there a way to edit registry like in this tutorial http://mingersoft.com/blog/2010/09/samsung-galaxy-s-reclaim-the-missing-three-button-modes/ to downgrade from JPH to JM1? I don't have 3 buttons combo and I can't root the phone.
I am new to this but I dont think so through Kies, I think you will have to use Odin, download the JM1 files from www[dot]samfirmware[dot]com and adb to get in to download mode. It could be dangerous as you don't have the 3 buttons combo, but I did it and it worked first time, but do research first, and take your time.
Seams this phone is very easy to brick, un-like my HTC Desire, so be careful, the official Froyo is out soon, so it may be better to wait to see what happens with that?

I prefer the Kies method because I tried to install the 3 buttons combo fix described in this tutorial but It didn't succeed. Anyway, I was able exiting from download mode and nothing was changed to the phone. I think that Kies is not forcing flashing something that isn't compatible like Odin and I'm not risking to brick the phone (may'be I'm wrong).
PS: I've read that Samsung people claim that recovery and download mode aren't supposed to be used by customers. False, because after the unsuccessful flash, Kies asked me to put phone in download (or recovery, I don't remember well) mode because the firmware must be recovered. Obviously I've ignored that because the phone was ok.
I did the Kies to JPH, the day after, the 3 buttons combo came out! so used Odin to go back to JM1 then did this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201
I have an unlocked & unbranded phone.
It was all very risky, but was ready to return phone, as I've only had it 7 days in the UK, but it all worked for me, but would not want to recommend this, I've got a fair bit of experience in flashing phones, or I could just be a bit stupid, and went for it.
There seams to be lots of different stories as to why the 3 buttons combo is missing, its just stupid, what ever the reason as it will cost Samsung more in repairs, they must know the Android community likes to do a little hacking here and there!
What ever you do, I hope all goes well!

I don't know how to go back to JM1 using Odin. Every tutorial says I need root at least. Or having 3 buttons combo enabled.
The way I did it?

This could be wrong, anyone with more experience than me please say if it is!!
To get into download mode:
What you need is the Android SDK, install then using the Command Prompt and type "adb reboot download" this will reboot the phone in download mode.
then look here www/samfirmware/com for I9000XWJM1 # and Galaxy S / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (512) and the Odin program.
Pit file 512
for PDA choose CODE_I9000XXJM1.tar
for PHONE choose MODEM_I9000XXJM1.tar
for CSC choose CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar
I did not have repartition clicked the next two were, and I checked Phone Bootloader update.
I had Odin setup with all the right files and settings, then used the "adb reboot download" the phone went into download mode, and then drivers were auto installed and Odin found the phone on com7, I held my breath and went for it.
But, I would do lots of your own research through this site, I could have just been lucky? and if you have even a little doubt, don't do it and wait for Kies and the official froyo.
Hope this helps a bit!

Ok, I will give it a try. But, can you gave me a link to all this files? I am really confused by now, reading dozens of threads and I want to be sure I will use the same files you used.
Hi
here for the SDK
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
and here
www.samfirmware.com
for the firmware/Odin/and pit files
I used:
I9000XWJM1 # (this has the CODE/MODEM/CSC .tar's in a zip file, password needed but on the web page)
Galaxy S / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (512)
Odin 1.3
this was helpful, but not a guide to this:
http://www.techlivez.com/2010/07/how-to-upgrade-galaxy-s-to-android-2-2-tutorial/
Thats about the most info I can give you, but I will say (not to be nasty) but I hold no responsibility for a bricked phone, it is easy to do, but appears even easer to brick! the new froyo may be out on the 23 of this month, so maybe wait till then to see if samsung has fixed all the problems, I'm sure you would kick yourself if you bricked it a few day before an update that fixed the problem.

[Q] Firmware need for Tablet bought from a trip in Saudi Arabia

Hi all,
I bought the P1000 galaxy tab back from Saudi Arabia when I was visiting there for business. After coming back home I wanted to flash a European firmware on to it.
Unfortunately following this attempt, the tablet just displays a battery charging symbol with no actual progress and does not go into download mode.
As the device was built to be sold in the Middle East, can you advise on what firmware should be used to reflash this device? All firmware I've tried from samsfirmwares.com has not worked and all have failed to boot. The best I could get was the Samsun Galaxy TAb logo during startup and that's it, it hung there. Now it's even worse, just displaying the battery symbol and nothing happens.
Thanks for your help in advance,
Try These instructions with Rotohammer JMIv2 firmware:
IF your Tab does not boot after flashing the kernel and hangs at the Samsung Galaxy Tab screen, you must follow the following procedure
Get a stock rom package (any of Rotohammer's firmwares will work)
Get P1_add_hidden.zip attached to this post and extract the P1_add_hidden.pit file
Using Odin 1.7, put stock rom (Roto-JME-Full-v4.tar for example) in PDA slot.
Put P1_add_hidden.pit in Pit slot
Check repartition box
Put Tab in download mode by holding Volume Down and Power, connect to the computer, and press start.
After this, the Tab will reboot normally.
Thanks DarkPal, appreciate the quick response. I'll give this a try and update this thread. In the meantime, can you let me know where I can get the rotohammer firmware? I'll definitely search for it but if there is a known good location I'd appreciate it.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939360 Here you Go. Hope you boot successfully. Don't use Samfirmware ROMs they have locked bootloaders.
Unfortunately I have the same Galaxy Tab logo and Samsung on the bottom. It just stays there. I've lost trust that this tablet will revive. Do you have any further ideas?
I tried
1. PIT + RePartition + Start + PDA ROM + Start --- Result same
2. PIT + PDA + RePartition + Start --- Result same
Just do one step at a time.
1. Get into download. Connect to pc. See the yellow box in odin. Pit file and check repartition, flash. Disconnect from pc.
2. Reboot into download. Connect to pc. Rom in pda, no check for repartition. Flash. Reboot into normal mode. If ok start, go back and flash your modem.
Captain, thanks for the steps. I've tried exactly word by word what you've sent earlier. Same thing happens.
There is a way to get into download mode, where you do something like squeeze the battery screen while holding power and volume down, but I'm not sure of the exact steps. Also one method involves the usb cable.
Can someone get us those alternate methods to get into download mode?
Is this stuff in the stickies for development?

If you looking for the touch screen reset procedures, I think this link will bring you there, look for Beards threads. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921848
For me, it doesn't work when I have issue with the battery indicators. But you can try it to reset.
Thank you henrylam for the link.

I have the exact same scenario as this but have yet to change the Rom as I'm not sure what benefit there actually is?
Custom roms aside, will my Tab actually be any better with a Euro rom on it as it can currently do everything I think it's supposed to.
Will I loose or gain anything?
*Bump*
Can someone please help with my question above?

Sorry, I don't follow your answer?
I've already got full phone capability using a UK sim (the unit is unlocked).
Why would this change by swapping the rom?
Was about to say warantee but they can tell from hardware

It won't. But you said you hadn't flashed the euro rom, which normally is done to gain phone capability.
Your phone had already been rom-modified by someone, because phone capability isn't a stock feature for any carrier.

[Q] Have I bricked my S2 whilst rooting? Can get to downloads screen.

Hi, all.
I used Heimdall to flash the kernel as part of rooting my new phone. The messages in the terminal window looked good and I got the blue progress bar. The phone rebooted and I got a yellow warning triangle and everything freezes. I downloaded a kernel image from Samfirmware and now the phone boots without the yellow warning, but no other change. It still gets stuck. Can anyone help or is my phone bricked?
I can boot into download mode and am using a Linux PC.
At the moment, my options seem to be:
1) Use Heimdall to flash something? I have a 400meg download from Samfirmware, but don't know how to flash the files besides zImage, using Heimdall.
2) Get a USB dongle from eBay to reset the page that says I've altered the handset. This means I should be able to take it back to T-Mobile.
3) Go to a Samsung service centre and potentially pay lots of money to have the phone repaired. Anyone know how much this is (in the UK)?
Thanks,
Chris.
Actually you don't need to do that , as long as you can access download mod then your phone is fine , what you need to do is this :
- Download a stock rom including all stuff (PIT . PDA . PHONE . CSC . BOOTLOADER ) and also Odin 3 v. 1.82 Don't use another flashing software (as far as i know the one you used is still new and it may still have a lot of bugs so its better to use odin) .
You can download all the files i told you to on this page : http://www.androidgen.fr/tutoriel-s...id-gingerbread-2-3-6-odin-article-2110-2.html
Its in french but i don't think you will find problems finding the download links ^^
- After you get all the files place them according to the page each one at its right place in odin and make sure that "Re-Partition is checked .. and hit start
if all goes right your phone will reboot and work again
Good luck
Edit : This files are for S1 , your're asking for help about an S2 i suggest you post it in the correct section or download similar files for the S2 and follow the same steps
Thank you, zizou.
I'm sorry I posted in the wrong area, I'll try again.
Sorry I wasted your time.
Chris.

SGS GT-i9000 fozen on the first boot screen (Galaxy S GT-i9000 SCREEN)

I own a Galaxy S GT-i9000( bought at SFR)
When I connect it to computer I get the prompt that tells to choose between Storage, Kies...
But whatever I choose the computer tells me USB Device not recognised.
Now I was stupid enough to do the following:
I managed to root using Z4root by copying the APK file on external sd .
I got rom manager and updated my recovery.
I updated using the CM10-unofficial rom that is in the development forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1775169
The Mobile Network was not working so I did the following
I restored the nand that i did in recovery and now the phone is frozen on the first boot screen (Galaxy S GT-i9000 SCREEN)
Now I can go to Download mode but I can't go to recovery mode.
Let me remind you that my USB data connection is not working. So even though I enter into the Download mode I am not able to use Odin. If you know somthing that I am not doing, let me know.
So now I am looking for a solution that would permit me to flash without USB or allow me to go to recovery mode. Or a tutorial on how to change the usb port myself.
Thanks in advance.

You can try using Mobile Odin.
Also, you can try Heimdall method: https://www.fixmystuff.in/FMS_Forum...-flashing-to-original-rom-using-heimdall.126/
Hey
have you tried to connect it in Download mode??
Need more solutions
Thanks again to all of you that have answered me so fast.
Well I just finished trying all that you suggested.
unfortunately am still at the same point. Whatever I do, whatever drivers am putting in, cleaning inside the USB port with methylated spirit... Not getting Odin or Kies to detect it.
I read somewhere that when the data connection works, I should see the device named Samsung Device even before installing the drivers, but all I am getting is Unknown device. I still went ahead uninstalling and installing the drivers you provided and there is no successful outcome so far.
I still have faith. I have a little knowledge in electronics. I can open my phone and get to the usb port. My problem is I don't get any tutorial on how to replace the usb port. The thing is the connections are very tiny. I can also do with a bypass way that could make me install a 2nd usb port temporarily just long enough to flash the phone.
Or a hardware solution if I have to remove and flash a specific IC in a certain manner.
Thank you in advance.

hi there,
after doing alot of stuff to your phone that wasnt nessacary i'm not surprised it doesnt work er sorry . the only thing i can think of is the following whenever i have a problem with windows i go to linux, which is faster , much more efficient . so i suggest that you install linux ( ubuntu the best ) and try using odin with the linux version, it often detects things that windows doesnt see. other than that sorry cant think of anything else .

Anything Else?
Does anyone have something else to suggest or I should consider my phone dead?
Look like a quite number of people are having this same issue and haven't got over it.
I just hang on and appeal to all of you cos I know XDA is the best place where I can get a solution.
Lemme know any suggestion... even the ones you are not sure can help. Am willing to do anything.

Also, another thread that will be of some help... Captivate - PC Connection Issues, Download Mode and Recovery Mode Help
Usually the first thing to try if an Odin flash doesn't go is to just try it again and then if that doesn't work u will need to try another micro usb/usb cable.
Be sure u have a constant power source to ur pc or laptop and don't interupt the flash by pulling the usb cord during the installation of the bootloaders, which usually only takes a few seconds.
If u have any other problems just post it here...there r still a few of us around this forum that will be glad to help as soon as we can.
