Soooo folks , my Baby has arrived yesterday and now i have following Question:
Anyone know how to root this shard? Same as Hero? .... I don´t think so...
Thx for Answers
how did u get it so fast. where did u buy it from?
I think rooting the Legend would be like for the Nexus One, because it's the first 2.1 OS to be rooted, anyway why would you root it if no dev made a ROM yet?
We will have certainly modded ROMs with fully working Live Wallpapers but give them a little time

Depends allways from your Provider, when is your Provider West-EU u can use Market without restriction....
If the Legend is not Rooted we can't install APK games and apps?
It's exciting to see the Legend finally released. But I'm waiting for the Desire
About the apps. I'm sure we can install any apk files on the Legend. As for the paid apps bought on the Hero, you can get the apk file from your Hero using Root Explorer. I have purchased one application and the apk file is located in /system/sd/app-private folder.
The problem here is that if the developer relases an update to the market you won't be able to update your app!!!
So I found my Apps in Hero in /data/app so i can install them to Legend... thats important for first time and later when Rooted then i will use Market...
Bootloader mode, may be helpful for anyone ....
Does Anyone has a solution for rootingthe phone and activate then Market Enabler... Here in Belgium we have the same problem...
is it possible to root it without reinstalling a new rom ?
thx
Yes, i mean it will be possible , we need to wait a bit ... i´m in contact with one dev that working already on the solution ...
Stupid question, but what does rooting does? Is it like gaining full admin rights? Also what is the market activation thing people talk about?

Rooting gives you access to functions that're normally shielded from the end-user. Yes, this means you can do more, but you should also be aware of the risks. First and foremost tampering with the software in the device will always void your warranty. Moreover if your machine somehow has vulnerabilities, and they're exploited, they'll not only have regular access but they'll have full admin access to your phone. It happened to the iPhone, which resulted in ransomware being installed on some iPhones (hacked ones where the terminal password wasn't changed by the owner upon rooting it). So it'll give you plenty of extra's, but do read up on what you're doing.
MarketEnabler is an app which allows you to set different regions for the market. Then you'll be able to download apps which might not be available in your region (developers can control in which regions they want to sell their apps, and some regions don't have paid apps yet).
I'm not worried about warranty. Besides you can always flash a official rom back right?
Checked up some more on rooting and it doesnt seem too usefull yet? Removing default apps you dont use and move the cache to SD card seems to be the most usefull at the moment. And maybe running apps from SD though that doesnt seem fail safe and google is working on that anyway right?
Sorry for the questions. I get plenty of experience with WiMo but this will be the first time I get a android phone so its kinda like having to learn things all over again
On WiMo its sooo each Just flash and find you .cab's and your good to go. About that, does android actually have some decent copy protection? or is it like wimo where you only need a .cab or the iPhone that also runs whatever you want after jailbreak?
When i look in the settings menu there's also an option accesibility only its shield of.
Does a root give me acces to this option?
I'm currently thinking of getting a Vodafone-branded Legend since it's much cheaper here in my region.
How are the chances of getting rid of the branding (it's software-only, just 2 links on the home screen and a boot animation) and to upload the original rom image to the phone? I want to have the latest updates on the phone when they're released by HTC...
Your going to need a hacked SPL to be able to change the boot image... and as this phone has just been released I'm guessing your chances are very slim at this point in time..
What i mean is to replace the complete ROM with the stock ROM from HTC.
What i've heard is that future updates will probably be released later for the branded phones, so i just want to have updates for the ROM as early as possible.
Most probably it's too early to make any assumptions here.

Well, for the Legend there aren't too much options yet, but for the Hero there's a ****storm of custom ROM's, from leaked 2.1 ROMs to AOSP (Android Open Source Project) vanilla Android builds ( means without HTC's modifications). So for me (not a developer), it's a matter of waiting 'til the device gets rooted and some custom ROMs start popping up. 'Til then: no, rooting won't do you much good .
i bought a used g1 on ebay for $40 and when i click on various settings it states a gmail email address but it doesnt let me change it, only enter the previous users password. how do i delete his account? should i just reset the phone to factory default? if so how do i do that? also Wifi is available right now, if i reset the phone will the wifi become locked? i dont have a data plan just prepaid plan. thanks for you help in advance
You have to reset it first. Then You will need to setup Your own google account details. You will be able to set your own wifi settings and turn off data if Your pay as you go plan not include it. Read forums and download manuals as it can save a lot of stress and money for You. Enjoy Your google device

Yes you need a gmail account to use any google app, and the app is called Android market. Just look around the phone and you should figure stuff out eventually...

Yes your wifi will become disabled, but here's a way to turn it back on:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Google_Login_via_a_WiFi_Connection
http://androidforums.com/g1-support/6564-activate-stock-g1-over-wifi.html
Choose whichever is more understandable for you
BTW, this will downgrade you to 1.0, so if you want to use newer firmware you're gonna have to root and flash a custom ROM.
I can walk you through it, if you don't know how.
that whole guide is just to enable wifi? why the hell has htc even locked out wifi???? also since your guide downgrades me to 1.00 isnt it easier for me to just install custom android firmware that gives me access to wifi, etc?

Wifi isn't accessable until after you sign into google... I just got my g1 too, but mine only cost 3 weeks of begging a friend! Without data, it's a PITA. I borrowed a friends sim card (with data) to sign in to google, and once past that, turned on wifi and switched back to my sim. Much easier if you have the option.

Yes they just want to force a data plan on you
And to install custom android firmware, then you'd need to start with 1.00
After you do the wifi thing and sign in, you go on to rooting and flashing a custom recovery. Then the rest is easy peasy. If you want to I can help you. You should install Froyobylaszlo.
im worried about bricking the device, plus on some of these guides i clicked the terminology is unclear or not explained such as "terminal", etc
I've messed with my dream so much and never bricked it
And I just rooted my first mytouch 3g slide today...
Only the first time is scary
But if your worried, then just do a lot of research and make sure you become familiar with it all

Try to follow the Cyanogen's Wiki
Here's how to setup an google account with a Wi-Fi connection:
http : // wiki . cyanogenmod . com/wiki/Google_Login_via_a_WiFi_Connection
These steps will only work if you haven't added an account yet, and you're on RC29 system software
Here you have instructions to install RC29 system software, in section "Downgrading the Firmware":
http : // wiki . cyanogenmod . com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
If you've an GSM data plan you can just do a wipe, and then login with your data plan.
To wipe, power off your phone, turn it on while holding the "Home" button. You'll see an triangle with an "!" inside, just press Alt+L, and then Alt+w. Reboot your phone and login with your GAccount!
Complete info about all this on Cyanogen's wiki for HTC Dream:

1.0 doesn't have many apps
There's a way to upgrade...
Look it up.
I can't right now.
When I get to a computer ill post a link if you haven't found one by then
But I really recommend rooting and installing a custom rom...
the OTA update doesnt happen on wifi. im guessing this rc29 i installed is already a custom rom. so what is the best custom rom for the G1 right now? i dont want anything that will slow down the phone. what do you recommend? any easy guides? will this be easier than the other guides u posted? thanks
First, flash the original RC29 G1 firmware, it's a DREAIMG.NBH file that's flashed from the bootloader.
The market thing is kinda simple to solve. Don't use the categories and these things, use the "Search function" (Menu > Search on market).
Then, you have 2 options from here:
1. Flash the cupcake upgade OR...
2. Flash an alternative recovery from telnet.
I really recomend the second option, shorter and less MiBytes to download.
Then, the idea is to update the radio and from here you can install the new SPL/Radio combo for 14 MB extras on RAM, or the combo that you prefer. Till' here all the hard part is done, the thing that lefts to do is a wipe (recommended one from fastboot), and flash the rom/kernel that you prefer.
If you want step-by step guidance, you can follow this guide: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Dream:_Rooting
Do all the process till' the "Flashing Radio" section (do the flash radio thing, but don't do more steps).
From here, you must decide what SPL/Radio combo you prefer, the 2708+ radio and 1.33.0013d SPL is a good combo cause it allows to the phone to use 14 MB extras on RAM. The only thing is that this SPL/Radio combo is problematic with android 2.1.x and earlier, special kernels are needed and they aren't so easy to find. But if you're planning to install android 2.2.x or later, then this SPL combo will be one of the bests.
For guidance to flash radio/spl/rom/kernel and these things after following cyanogen's wiki, you can post here. Also, there are lot of threads here in XDA that guide you to do these SPL/Radio and other things, but be really carefull with them, you can harm your phone in a irreversible way.
i dont understand most of the terms you are mentioning. i downgraded to rc29. now what is the highest level of android available for the G1 that is an Official download from tmobile or htc. how do i install it?
http://androidandme.com/2009/10/beg...the-official-t-mobile-android-1-6-on-your-g1/
is that guide correct or do you have a better easier guide?
also what is the best unofficial rom to download for the G1? android 2.2? android 4? i dont know what spl is or radio, etc, what is the easiest guide for noobs? there are so many rom threads in the forum i dont know where to start. what is hands-down without a doubt the best rom available for the G1 right now, official or unofficial and a guide for it? let me know thanks. also are there any chances or bricking the phone?

About that link, better that you don't try it. You may have serious problems with so many written commands.
I'll be putting this as simple as i can
Respecting to the ROM and SPL and Radio and all those, just a few questions to decide about it:
You'll like features as share internet via WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, install aplications from market that require newest versions of Android, block ads on web pages and aplications, transfer files via bluetooth, they're kinda good stuff to try a larger guide for you? Or you won't those functions and prefer a shorter way?
Be adviced that with the shorter way you'll suffer all the T-Mobile limitations, with the larger one you'll have tons of capabilities and posibilities.
So, decide about this.
And some questions, to recommend you a ROM that adequates to your needs...
You would like the rom to be fast? To have a good look and apperance? To be stable and work apropiately and don't give you troubles/malfunction? To simply have the latest android operating system? To play games nicely? To have lot, lot of aplications installed? In resume, what will you need/require from a ROM, what are the specifications by what you'll definetively decide for them?
You have a T-Mobile G1, a Roger's/Orange one, or a Android Dev Phone 1 (this is shown when you power up the phone, the first screen tells you that)?
Your SD card is of how much gigabytes...? What class is your SD card?
And finally, yes, you've many changes to brick the phone by only doing little things bad (like 4 bad, bad clicks on your phone and you'll be done with it). So, please be carefull and patient, this will assegurate that your phone will be well configurated and don't give any trubles.
Waiting for your answers to give you more and more detailed and non harmfull steps
If you have a doubt of why so many questions, you can ask freely, I'll give you the reasons why does them matter. And... it would be faster if you answer them and ask at the same time
Roadmap to Custom ROM
1.Unlock Bootloader from htcdev.com.
2.Flash a multi hboot recovery.
3.Root using the permanent root solution flashed via recovery, found here.
4.Flash S-OFF Hboot from unlimited.io.
5.Flash custom ROM with no problems.
To check your Unlock Token, Flash Recovery and S-OFF you should use the tool provided by me here .
This is the easiest guide to follow.. I'm also using this step to install custom Rom on my SXL before I got One X.. I'm also don't get it.. why people don't use unlimited.io trick.. it easier for me.
BTW.. it good to see a new dev for sxl.. it a good device.. but lack of developer.. wish you good luck with your project.

Agreed.
I've flashed on a lot of devices and the SXL guides are all a bit random.
The info is out there but sometimes you need to dig a lot to find it.
And a lot are out of date.
Hope this becomes the go-to guide for everyone and hope to see some dev work happening.
I think its time to move on for me..... getting flash withdrawal.

I'm just getting familiar with the forum and the device (almost 4 days since i bought it).
Soon enough if i have time (back2school), i will try to work on CM9 or CM10, depends, CM9 seems the obvious road to take as some work was previosly made by [vertigo], and some fixes are needed (he said that are kernel related), so i think i will try to fix his CM9 rather than port it again form scratch.
As for CM10, i think the best road to take is to compile AOSP JB from source and edit the kernel so it likes the jelly flavour.
If everything works as intedend, in a couple of months we should see both CM9 and JB/CM10 up and going.
(The worst thing is that i will surely need help, i think i can find around the forum, some testers already enrolled to the call to arms thread, so maybe we can build up a team., i really like this device )
I will say that some of the guides are if you were on a GB rom, and then installing a custom rom wasn't so easy, but since the upgrade to ICS it has become a lot easier, although I had noticed that it is easier to softbrick the phone if you don't flash the chinese boot.img and then chinese rom. Also s-off isn't essential for flashing custom roms...

Well, i'm fairly new to this device, but from what i've learned, the chinsese rom is optional if you have s-off, as s-off let's you to access all the partitions, system and other things you need.
Maybe i'm wrong, that's why i've started this thread, i think this is easier, and softbricking a phone with Android seems almost impossible to me...as i said, to me
Yeah I know the chinese rom is optional, but as I said from my point of view, once I'd flashed the chinese rom, I didn't manage to softbrick the phone where as before when I was trying various ports I managed to softbrick it a few times. Just my opinion and what I'd noticed with my device...
As for s-off mine (although broken) is still s-on and I've never felt the need to make it s-off. Again just my opinion

Well, i know what youre pointing at, i was just wandering when i first read te forum, why on earth should i install a Chinsese ROM when i will change it anyways for a new ROM...so the boot.img is a different one in the custom one, and other things.
I'm not so expeirenced with S-Off/On, as this is my first HTC phone i have and changed ROM (not too many HTC's in my area), but from what i've read online, S-Off is the best road to take to ensure you don't softbrick your phone, as you have the real "Full Control" over the Device and the ROM parts you can flash, like you, this is my opinion, a begginers opinion

unclocked the bootloader from htcdev.
all data gone, no more, like factory reset again
superuser app still exist, didn't root again
booted and rooted as you said
connect PC to phone via USB in charge mode only.
run your tool
doing select 5 Flash HBOOT S-OFF Unprotected (via adb) - choose hg hi both failed - but face above message 3 repeat lines.
reboot to bootloader FASTBOOT, >>>>>USB<<<<< appear

then select 4 Flash Recovery. (via fastboot) - then choose rei reg both failed - but face above message. 1 line.
Hope can teach me, thank you very much in advance.

Extract the contents of the archive in C:/ and try again, it is most likely because you are running from a folder that has spaces (" ").
Thanks for replying so quickly, some questions before sleep tonight.
I moved the folder to c:\xmtool and run as administrator as usual. But without connecting the phone, and select 5 flash H boot. The 3 repeat message appear still. Hahah, may be I want to test in theory.

i also (on my search) have my code from the sony site where i selected my phone, sent an email, entered IMEI number and gave me a code to run using fastboot (this did not work for me)
based on theses settings what program/files/tools do i need to install custom rom, which i guess also will root it (im looking at either paranoid android or lineageOS)

You can't unlock you bootloader mate, the screenshot you put up says so. Meaning no custom kernels, which also means no ROMs that aren't based on stock. You're stuck with MIUI and various other zip-ports. No Lineage or AOSPA etc.
You can root it no problem though. Just use google or whatever, there's a couple of ways to do it.

Just find a MIUI ROM in the dev section if you want MIUI.
You can install any firmware from Sony using Flashtool. Learn to use it, it's gonna be your friend.
That means you download any FTF file for your phone (there's a thread somewhere with a collection of FTFs), and you can flash it. KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, or Concept.
I don't know how to root really, I just do it the old fashioned way since my bootloader is unlocked (and I pray that never changes). I think you'll have to downgrade to KitKat, which, again, is very easy if you know how to use Flashtool.
Np mate, I know the feeling of dead threads. Just happened by luck that I saw yours and got intrigued by the title lol.

Haven't used MIUI since 2013 so you'll have to find one by yourself lol. I'm more of an AOSP guy -- if I was forced to use a locked bootloader I'd just install the concept FTF. That's about as light as you can get on this phone.
You can't unlock your bootloader, period. No software hack will help you. At least not from home. You'd need something like a riffbox and extensive knowledge of the phone's bootloader software to unlock it.

Concept it is
Ok thank you for making it super clear (for me and anyone else reading this. )
It's annoying that the sony website gave me a code to unlock it. I'm sure they could have known from the IMEI number whqt it was and stuff.

I think the carriers lock the bootloaders, not Sony. As far to my knowledge, Sony ships out the devices unlocked, and the carriers decide whether to lock them, but don't report back to Sony. Their site just assumes you don't have a s'hitty carrier.
Best of luck man, and welcome to the Z3C forums!
Hey guys ive been perusing the web for days, i cant seem to find the method that should be used to get a new rom on my phone i have the SM-N950U1.
i am also a linux user and not sure exactly how i should go about flashing when i dont have a windows machine. does any one have a clear start to finish idea how to correctly do this and what i will need to complete the root, flash. im sorry if it covered some where i hae looked but evidently not found a method. any assistance would be very grateful i really dont like proprietry bloatware and i know this is an older phone. thank you all for any assistance!
1. Unlock bootloader.
This will factory reset your phone.
I forgot the exact process of this, was a long time ago when I did this.
2. Flash a Custom Recovery with "ODIN"
"TWRP" is the most common Custom Recovery.
I think ODIN is Windows-only Software, but you could use a VM.
3. Boot into Custom Recovery & flash the Custom_ROM.zip file.
You can try out Custom ROMs from XDA from the ROMs-Section.
I may have forgotten something, so take this with caution

First of all the SM-N950U1 (snapdragons soc models) has a permanent LOCKED bootloader so no TWRP recovery.
The post from dreamytom is for SM-N950F/F-DS/N exynos models.
You can only root the SM-N950U1 models, with nougat firmware with root only, depending on the bootloader you are on and if you can find the files needed for it. The thread for that "Extreme Syndicate root thread " has been disconnected and the files taken down, so might want to ask in that thread for someone to share the files for you.
Best of luck!
edit.
Here is the thread.
