I ordered a class 6 16gb card to replace the slow-ass class 2 8GB card I had in my HD2.
First of all I couldnt find the format sd tool in my energy rom (1st July) so I had to format the card using vista while the HD2 was connected in disk drive mode. THAT TOOK OVER 1 HOUR.
(Is there a cab file to install the "Format SD Card" tool for the newer energyroms?)
Anyways after formatting (Fat 32, 16KB cluster), I started to copy my 1.4GB sd backup file to the card using the same method as above (disk drive mode)....
My maximum write speed was 2.7MB/sec. Average 2MB/sec.
Class 2 speeds????
After restoring the backup, which took forever, I ran spb benchmark on the card and was gutted to get slightly lower results than the old class 2 I was replacing.
Can the HD2 make use of anything faster than a class 2 card?
Has anyone here tested a class 6 or even 4 card and found good write speeds (~6MB/sec, or ~4MB/sec)?
Does it sound like I have bought a lemon (class 2 labelled as class 6)?
I have spoken to the seller and he is adamant that they ARE genuine class 6. Reckons he tested some of the batch in TrueHD cameras which will not accept <Class6. Seems genuine and some of his feedback states that the cards are Genuine class 6. Which leads me to think that the bottleneck could be the HD2... Does that sound likely?
I'm waiting for a microsd USB reader to arrive so I can test the card outside of the HD2, but Until I can do that... can anyone tell me if a class 6 is wasted in a HD2?
The strange thing is that when browsing photos/wallpapers etc, the thumbnails ARE loading maybe 3x quicker than my old class 2. So I'm pretty confused about this one.
Can anyone shed any light here? Feel free to post benchmark results/screenshots etc.

I will move this thread there. I also recently bought a Class 6 card and and have seen a huge improvement in media reading and over all performence.
I get 4-5MB/s both for reads writes with my 16GB class 6 card in disk drive mode.

That is exactly the kind of data I'm looking to compare.
Whith my 'class 6' Im getting just under 3MB/S WRITE and under 6MB/S READ when using the HD2 in disk drive mode.
If I use the card in a USB 2.0 reader I can get around 5.5MB/S Write and ~11-13MB/S read.
Based on this alone would you say my card is a class 6 or not. I'm beginning to think it may be a class 4 re-labelled.
Picture browsing etc is faster with my class 6 but all benchmarks indicate it is identical speed to my genuine Kingston Class 2.
What do you guys reckon, Should I send this card back for a refund???
Well if you're getting 5.5 and over 11MB per second with a card reader then we can safely assume it's class 6. The bottleneck is something to do with the phone, rom, cable or simply the phone doesn't like this particular card etc...
EDIT: Test your class 2 card with the memory card reader and see if you get similar results.

Thank you for helping me clear things up.
Comparing the 'class 6' and the 'class 2' transfer speeds is where I really get confused here.
Transferring a ~700MB .Avi to and from SD using a reader:
Kingston Class 2 8GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 5.4MB/s
Unbranded Class 6 16GB:
Read 12.5MB/s
Write 6MB/s
So, from this, would you say its safe to assume:
1. The class 2 card is a good one, performing at almost class 6 speeds.
2. The class 6 card is 'Genuine' and shouldnt be returned.
3. There is a bottleneck when using the HD2 as a card reader/disk drive. I should be getting more than 2.5mb/s write speeds in this mode.
4? Does 12.5MB/sec sound close to USB 1.1 speeds? could my reader or even USB port (Vista laptop) be another bottleneck?
Once again thank you for helping me make sense of all this.
At least I now know that the 16gb card doesnt really need to be returned.

Well class 2 means you should be getting a minimum 2MB/s speeds and class 6 means you should be getting a minimum 6MB/s.
Seems like you have a very good class 2 card.

Your class 6 is performing to spec.
Personally I would never buy an unbranded card but that's me. A branded card may perform better than there class rating e.g. Your Kingston brand I've always used Sandisk personally...
I've just managed to drum up enough funds to get myself a HD2 and now looking to upgrade my HCSD card to 16GB. To get the "right" class I tried to find the spec on the SD interface but I cannot find anything and the best data I can find is that I shouldn't waste my money on unbranded devices, I would always buy a SANDISK device for something I relied on! For data and communication!
People seem to get appropriate speeds for the class of device they have, if they are branded and sometimes if unbranded. However, there doesn't seem to be anything better than class 6 results debated or given. Is it a VERY rash assumption that the fastest the HD2 interface can go is Class 6?

My experience was positive with higher class micro SD.
At first, I used 8GB micro SD bundled with my HD2 and didn't notice improved loading speed. Later, I changed it with higher class one, same 8GB, with same manufacturer, Sandisk. Higher class one has name "Ultra" on it. Now with changed SD, loading became WAY faster. "Wow" I realized the higher speed of CPU of HD2.
My 2 pennies.
NEVER EVER buy unbranded memory cards!
Keep an eye on Sandisk cards only and even prefer them to Transcend and Kingston.

The biggest size available currently is 32GB.
I don't know if even more is possible with microSDHC or if bigger cards will only be possible with SD3.0 (aka SDXC) but that question is not relevant as you can't buy any greater then 32GB yet.
The Class of the SDCard is a measurement for guaranteed minimum speed in random read/write.
The Class does not provide any information about real-world speed or max speed.
For your mobile phone the class is a pretty useless criterion as you don't need any guaranteed minimum speeds but good overall speeds ESPECIALLY sequential.
The guaranteed minimum speed is important for HD Video Cameras for example where you write data all the time at a given speed (resolution).

Don't pick uSD card based on class !! class tels you MB/s for sequential write only... you need a card that is overall fast, I had 16GB class 10 Kingston and data2ext was just horrible!
Now I'm with class 4 Sandisk mobile ultra and it is in fact faster in every test I ran...

well then, I recommend sandisk mobile ultra as I have it and it is OK, there are probably faster cards...just see the small files read / write speeds in reviews those are of greatest importance
i purchased a kingston 8GB class 4 which crapped out. android kept reported sdcard unexpectedly removed. tried all sorts (formatting in windows, android, quick, long, etc).
RMA replacement did exactly the same, so i'm guessing kingston class 4's are best avoided.
If I recall correctly I have a 16GB microSDHC Class 4 card. After applying data2ext with this card, my Quadrant scores hit around 1500, which is crazy.

class 6 is better , but class 10 is even better
I've got a Sandisk Ultra Mobile 16gb SDHC which works fine in the Legend. Make sure you format it with the phone to stop it being dismounted, well known issue and the fix
I had a Galaxy Ace wich I upgraded to my new Optimus Black. I bought a 8 GB Class 2 micro SD, OB came with 4 GB Class 4 micro SD. Would i feel the difference between both of 'em if i user 8gb class 2 again? I think i need more data storage

No. Higher class = higher minimum write/read speed.
You can try get a legendary Class 10 Micro SD with more than 8GB

Actually I have a Micro SD Adata Class 10 16GB. On my daily usage, I noticed better performance from games that requiere SD data storage and better speed for tranfer files via usb. On my experience, 1GB in 1:30min!!! Well that's when i'm transfer a unique .rar file, if you try with a folder of same size it takes a little more time
Another thing, if you're a gamer, trust me... you must get a 16Gb micro SD at least, because the heavy graphics games (like newest Gameloft Games) have very heavy quantity of data. Only with the downloadable data of Nova2, Asphalth 6, MC3, Street Fighter IV, FIFA12 and Real Racing2 you fill a MicroSD 8GB!!! D: but they are very good games ;D

defintely use higher class (min. class 6)... you will gain a benefit when loading/copying large amount of data. agree with above.

Those are the minimum speeds, the class doesn't say anything about maximum speeds. It is possible for a lower class card to reach higher speeds than a higher class card. It should not be possible for a card of a given class to go slower than the class minimum.
I had the common lag in camera recording...when I changed to samsung 32GB class 10 all went fine , that was still in froyo. I got it for only 27€ in an spanish online shop called "pccomponentes".
Great deal..3 months so far and all running well.
The Classes are the speed to write on SD, If You have a class 4 is better than 2, but maybe is more expensive.

It's a good dilema, space vs speed. As others have said if you are a gamer go for speed. If you just have music a pictures on your SD and are patient then go for size.

Yeah, I suggest too to choose a class 10 if you are a gamer, a lower class if you're not.
But I don't suggest you to use a SD wich is less than class 4. Class 4 for in my opinion is the lower class to consider, others are too slow even for photos. Your device may suffer of this (be very slow)

I am eyeing for the sandisk mobile ultra 32gb class 6. It claims to have 30mb/s read speed which is really impressive.
But does galaxy note sdcard reader will be able to handle 30mb/s read speed? Because for what I know most card reader tops at 20mb/s which is why most cards even those class10 ones has read speeds of less than 20mb/s.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

I don't think Note can handle 30 mb/s .. someone with more insight on the hardware of the card reader on Note might be able to help you

That's the 'realism' that I had in my mind. If I have a full 32gb card, and wanted to transfer my pictures and videos, which is what mostly the card will be used up for, how is the transfer speed will be? If I am able to use the full 30mb/s read speed on sandisk mobile ultra card, that can greatly reduce the amount of time to move 32gb of data off the sdcard.
For sdcard application usage within the phone itself, the only thing that I can think of that will use alot of bandwidth on the card is recording full hd video, which a class 6 card is more than enough to handle the write speed. If for read speed, a mere class 2 cards can do 8mb/s read speed which is fast enough to watch your regular hd video, listen to your mp3 etc.
You just can just connect the phone to pc as storage mass and the program will detect the drive. You can start the test using the software.

k heres my 2 cents, my family has 5 galaxy notes. Basically I tried many brands ranging class 4, 6 and 10. First off the class 4 32g are like 40% or so slower than the class 10's. The 2 class 10's I have are all different brand both 32g and I can tell you they don't really make a lot of diff in terms of speed its less than 0.5mb per sec diff (the slower class 10 is same brand as the Note and the other one starts with Lex???). Then you have the class 6 64g which runs up to around 10% or so slower than the class 10. At the end of the day what you find is class 6 and 10 are both fast but the class 4 are dam slow. On my machine I'm using the 64g card. Speed was determined and optimized by SD booster and SD tools.

Anyway, my actual question was, is the GNote be able to handle 30mb/s transfer for the sandisk mobile ultra versions or atleast what is the highest read speed for GNote card reader.
There is one benchmark that I came across somewhere that proves that the card does actually deliever that transfer speed albeit using usb 3.0 port. It takes atleast a regular usb 2.0 reader on a usb 3.0port to achieve it. A usb 2.0 reader on usb 2.0 port barely makes the 20mb/s mark on the same card. So the usb 3.0 port is quite crucial even though a usb 2.0 reader is being used on it.
So yah, the ideal situation is someone actually has the sandisk ultra mobile card + GNote and is willing to give spare time to benchmark it for us and post it here.

I'm searching a for a new SD card for my HD2 for a while now and wanted to buy a 32gb class 10 microsd card from samsung.
But then i saw a new cards with new classes called "UHS".
I also saw one of them having the class 6 and the UHS class.
I have a few question regarding this:
1. Does this UHS class work on the HD2?
2. Is it possible for a card to have a normal class and a UHS class?
3. if not, are UHS 1 cards as fast as class 10 cards on devices that do not support UHS?
4. How can UHS 1 be cheaper then class 10?

Can't answer for sure if they are 100% compatible with HD2 hardware(there is certain hardware requirement for UHS), but in theory any speed after class 8/10 is pointless. Class 10 is close to HD2 hardware bandwith limit. You won't benefit that.

I was also looking for a 32GB class 10 card and found the UHS-i type, but in the reviews i saw said about compatibility issues in non compatible devices or transfer speeds relatively low in devices without UHS-i compatibility.
To avoid problems i purchased one Samsung Class 10 card, works perfectly in my HD2 and don't have to worry.
That is exactly what i thought, that the uhs-i has a lack of performance on not supported uhs-i devices and that they are not completely backwards compatible to normal class 10 speed.
Do you maybe have a URL of those complaints?

That would be expected for transferring relatively small files and using windows formatting as the random read/write speed (most frequently used) will be slower with a higher class, whereas the sequential read/write speed will increase. This may beneficial for users with WP7 but if you use it anywhere else it will seem much slower.

WHAT IS UHS-1 ?
"UHS-1" or more accurately "UHS-I" stands for "Ultra High Speed" - 1 and is a speed class for SDHC and SXDC memory cards.
UHS-I is the fastest category of card available today with a bus interface speed of up to 104 MB/s.
An SDHC UHS-I card will work in any SDHC compatible device at lower speeds, but to take advantage of the UHS-I speed, a UHS-I compatible device is essential.

The speeds would be the Class 6 or Class 10 speeds, depending on what's listed on the card. Of course, even that can be bottlenecked by your device's cache.
UHS-I doesn't work nice!
I try to use a SanDisk 16GB class10 Ultra MicroSd HC-I but as I found out it doesn't feet with my HD2 EU..... ...Although it works very smooth and fast after some hour my phone just freezes....only the light of the hardbuttons works...screen turns black...I take off the battery...and all this sadness comes to my face...
So I got back to my Transcend 16GB class10 and everything works almost fine (a little bit slow sometimes, so I use sd card boost and swapper2).
You can see by yourself ...the mmc driver has not included UHS mode...
UHS vs CLASS
The UHS means it has content transfer speed of minimum 30mbps to maximum of 104mbpswhen you transfer the content from MicroSD to System(PC)....but the data write speed on the MicroSD depends on the CLASS mentioned on it i.e., CLASS 10 has MAX write speed of 10MB/S......(Note: all this speed transfer test will use top speculated system configurations so it may vary on our PC's).

Just to echo what a few people have said elsewhere and clarify something. Using an SDcard with a UHS classification may well cause your HD2 to hang, black screen, freeze, crash .... especially when using certain ROMs. Some seem more resilient than others, but the NativeSD ROMs in particular rely heavily on accessing the SDcard. The only way to reset after a blackscreen is to remove battery and reboot.
The HD2 was never designed to work with these cards and they require specific voltages from the phone hardware in order to run correctly. The HD2 does not have such hardware. I used a Sandisc 16GB Class-10 UHS-1 card and my phone would hang/crash 7-10 times each day. After replacing it with a Class-10 Kingston card with no UHS classification, the phone runs fine. Nothing else was changed except the SDcard. The exact same installation was used by cloning the SDcard partitions. Consequently the phone runs fine now.
Just thought I'd post up in case it helps others.
Would appreciate if someone could mirror this post for me (I have less than 10 posts on XDA and don't want to spam the forum just to get them) on this thread for [ROM][4.1.2][720p] NexusHD2-JellyBean-CM10 V1.5 [NativeSD] because a few people were complaining of bugs and it's nothing to do with the ROM itself, more the memory cards they are using.

Use 32GB Sandisk class10 Ultra UHS HC-I without a single issue. Did want the mobile Ultra class 6 to be safe but sent me class10 UHS but worked out fine ...

I am using SanDisk ultra 16Gb UHS-1 card without any issue for some time now with many different ROMs. I would rather bet that not original (Kingston, Sony, no names) that looks like original cause that.
