Hello xda community!
I recently broke the screen on my current android phone, and decided instead of replacing the screen, I would buy a new phone.
I have been researching various windows phones because I love their UI so much.
I found the HD7 on amazon for $240 refurbished, and I love the overall look and feel of the phone.
Before deciding to commit to my purchase, I came here to ask about the phone itself.
Is this phone worth it? Does it have a good dev community?
Or do you reccomend another windows phone?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
i think that its a very good phone.
before you buy it, just check the model number?HSPL????
if you cant install cotulla HSPL and then rom dont bother with it !
iam still waiting for HSPL... for mine, actually iam doing back to the HD2 as (looks) like all problems have been fixed,
cheers
i love the phone. it is my favorite purchase from 2011.
even if i could pick up the Titan or the Radar for the price i got my HD7, i would still go for the HD7.
size is right. Titan is too big, Radar is too small.
removable battery, unlike the Radar.
only three things i wished the HD7 had: physical keyboard, higher resolution screen (not yet, available, though) & newer [read: more power efficient] cpu.
also, i find the HD7 community to be larger then the other WP7 devices' communities.

i have a spare htc hd7, bought it from tmobile and its updated to mango 7.5 and is sim unlocked. im considering selling it because its a spare phone, if you are interested let me know. BTW its a great phone if you want to see if the OS is for you ^_^ tnx
Get the HD7. All of the big WP7 Development just happens to be centering around the HD7 resulting in dozens of custom roms to choose from.. The kick-stand is a very small feature, but it has proven to be extremely useful.. When showing friends a video it's much easier to be able to set the phone down and watch it like a mini-tv of sorts.. If it were up to me, all future phones would have the HD7 design, the only thing I'm willing to change are the internal components, (CPU, Memory, etc)
I suggest getting the HD7.
Hi guys i am also thinking of getting one i know how to check hspl and versions but with which one i will be to use custom roms, from what i've read so far 1. 2. 3. are flashable others 4. and 5. require downgrade if not halfbricked by now... i got really lost with all that info can anyone provide what should be a valid id of hd7 so i don't get a brick ... Thanks

I'm interested, though I won't have money to afford it for a bit, due to me being a full time college student.
I can keep in touch though.

U really should buy a HD7 to experience the Windows Phone UI. Anyway I have to tell you it is very troublesome to costum/define the ringtunes....

I don't care a whole lot about ringtones..and not sure why it would be hard to change.
Im planning to purchase this phone from Amazon for 200$ used, as soon as I acquire funds for it.
Not sure if I should spend the extra 40$ for a refurbished/new one.
Luckily this phone is T-Mobile native, and I can just pop my sim card in.
Plan on seeing me in this community soon!

I'm looking at getting a cheap HD7 as well.
I'm currently using my HD2 flashed with WP7 mango and have to say I'm quite enjoying the WP7 experience. It just works and I don't feel I have to spend lots of time tweaking like I did when I had Android on the HD2.
But there are a couple of things I'd like to confirm before I get one.
1) My main issue with the HD2 is battery, is the battery life on the HD7 likely to be better than the 10ish hours max I get on my HD? (A few short phone calls, hourly calendar/mail sync, bit of internet/market with wifi OFF but bluetooth on)
2) I will want to flash with a custom ROM so to unlock the sideloading of apps etc, from what I've read to do this easily I need to ensure the bootloader is 4.x or below. Is this correct?
Thanks

Ive been considering getting an android phone for quite a while so im thinking of the g1 becuase it is cheap and it has a keyboard, what are your guys thoughts, i have a fuze right now.
Don't buy a g1. I've had this phone since november 2008 and I can't wait to get rid of it. You should spend the money and get a better android phone, such as the droid, nexus, or wait for the htc desire. You will definitely have a better android experience with one of these phones. Its just to much hacking you have to do to make a G1 good.

Yeah I would stay away from the Cliq. There are roms for it, but there isn't as much development for it as there is for the G1. You'll find it to be quite boring and it's stuck on 1.5. If it's a choice between the two, get the G1.
Lol... Its pretty funny how everyone is saying the G1 is bad and don't buy it. Give it a month, there will be something then the N1 and everyone's going to say, "Don't buy the N1 its such garbage." G1 is a good phone. It won't take you to the moon, but it's not bad. =] I personally have the myTouch. I honestly wish I would have got G1 for keyboard, though. That's another reason I hate the N1... Yea, it's sexy... but touch screen keyboards have proved to be nothing but trouble for me. Besides misclicking (which you get better at) they usually lag. Sometimes slightly - sometimes horribly. They're NEVER as fast as a physical keyboard, though. They also prove to be trouble for games or things that use a keyboard. Most have full touch screen support, but I personally like to use a keyboard to play a game if it's an option. That's just my opinion.
I bought one off eBay for under $200 and I love it. I don't see how any other phone is better than it right now. It was a five row keyboard, trackball, and with all the custom roms available, it fits every niche that I want.

Beat THAT!
HTC DREAM (people... please call it what it actually IS and not what it has been DE-branded to...) is a very flexible device. Perfectly capable of running the latest builds of android.
The problem that some people are having is that the manufacturer (HTC) has decided to stop supporting it. This is no different than what will happen with the GN1 or other android phones made by HTC.
And the main thing to keep in mind is that this is a PHONE, not a supercomputer. Does it REALLY NEED to be the latest super-duper over powered crazy thing? NO. It really doesn't.
DREAM is very well known, and hacked up the wahzoo. There is virtually nothing that you can't make it do. Right down to being jtag-able.
Fact is simple; if you want maximum flexibility in your phone (more important than peak performance), DREAM is the ticket.
Cool guys, thx for the advice i defintley think i am going to purchase 1 off ebay, but im thinking if i should get the brown/black or the white, i saw the white can get a few nicks on in but it looks nice, what do u guys have?

I would say overall that I am very happy with this phone.
Especially with the hacks and mods that I've done to it.
Its fast, stable and looks great.
I am more than happy with this phone, (Especially since I traded a Sidekick LX for it) I haven't been this happy with a phone in a while.
I used to have the HTC Excalibur and coming from Windows Mobile to Android is phenomenal, everything is so simple once you learn and get the hang of it.
So if you have the cash and you are curious just buy it and learn the basics!
Well worth it!
What attracted to me about this phone is that it is able to use the keyboard( hard keyboard is obviously easier to use) to type and gaming. Moreover, the phone is able to be modded and a variety of ROMs that might suit your style to choose from.
I would actually want to buy a second HTC Dream if I could. Seriously, if you really want to utilise your PDA phone properly, the Dream can do it all for you. However, if you really want high end gaming and more sensitive touch screen & proximity sensors to show off, then it's better to get the latest phone. I find that as it is, I am utilising only 50% of what the Dream is capable of. So I have been using it since last year and will continue on until I cannot do certain things that are important for work. Just my 2cents.
Coming from all different kinds of OS's, Sony, WM for many years, and finally the awesome Android OS.
Its hard to compete against it. I like the idea of a quality physical keyboard and screen. There is so much development and quality Rom releases here for our phone.
Devs know this and that is why they stay and keep doing what they do so well for all of us. Themers as well deserve much respect for their hard work and commitment.
Bottom Line: Buy a G1, you'll be hard pressed to find a better android phone at this time.
Will the HD7 has complete functionality as it does in other countries...
Like the HTC Weather tabs, the Zune full screen photo backgrounds etc etc...
Yes, i own the HD7, have been for a few days now. Everything seems to work like in any other country. The UI is fantastic even though it seems a bit Kaccha(unripe). Of course its 7.0 so

Superb man!!! all the best and lemme know ur experience!!
I would recommand you wait it out.
If you are ready to Shell out 25-26k
You rather Get the Galaxy S or Nexus S comes to around Rs. 27,500
better functionality .better features.
If you are only interested in Screen size then go for the HD7.
Nothing is really good as far as Im concerned.
So please do your research before purchase.
(Im currently regretting it)
Honestly, i dont see any point in waiting its not like the hardware is going to get better. Microsoft is releasing an update to Windows phone 7 at the end of the month that makes the phone even faster, preserves battery life and adds copy and paste among others.
Theyve done a really good job for a 1.0 OS release, however it is clear that there are several small features missing(like msg forwarding). If this isnt going to hinder you too much i would urge you to go with the hd7
Dont be swayed by the emergence of dual core phones, there are no dual core ready apps yet, and that will take time.
As for the HD7, it has the biggest screen out there, and it is really really fast. I love the responsive UI and the front panel which actually looks quite subtle and modest(as opposed to the flashy samsung omnia which looks gaudy).
Sorry for the delayed reply.

Hey thanx for ur reply...But I have a little disconnect with your opinion of Omnia. I honestly think that the colours on Omnia 7 are bright and colourful and HD7 lacks that.
Look at this pic:
http://gallery.me.com/o.khademi/100025/HD7 v O7/web.jpg?ver=12896154820001
The fuschia pink looks like fuschia pink on the Omnia. But on the HD7 it looks like baby pink.
And this is the case with all the reviews I have seen on YouTube and elsewhere.
So I think I have changed my mind and am mostly going to but Omnia 7 (WHEN it hits India that is).
But thanx anyways.

I'm sorry but nothing works in India. Whenever I try to use/download an app through zune or through marketplace on the handphone....I get the message that this feature is not available in your country.
Zune suggested making another live account in the US & asked me to change my region/location on my PC....even that did not work. Dunno why did they launch this phone in India.
I simply hate what they have done with WMP7 in the process of trying to mimic iPhone. Even iPhone users have access/connectivity to outlook & this does not have it. I was a hardcore user of windows phone for the last maybe 15 odd years, but not after this. Cannot sync with outlook, cannot copy excel files, cannot browse the phone for files directly, cannot customize stuff etc. etc. Better to go with iPhone or any other phone than with WMP7.
Just my 2 bit along with some facts.

hey dude...I got my HD7 and believe me, everything works like a charm.
Here is one thing you have to keep in mind: MAKE Sure all all the accounts have the country as 'US (United States)' May it be your phone's country, your Live account's country, your computer's country...
Try resetting your phone (u might lose data) and when on the next startup it asks (it asked me and I was clever to click US) just click on United States...everything else will follow...
Cheers! Hope I was helpful...PM me if you have any questions...

HTC has actually launched these phones in India before Microsoft has launched WP7 here, hence the problems.
If you have everything set to U.S. accounts, it works perfectly. I've had my TMoUS HD7 (which I picked up back home in NY) on Vodafone in Mumbai since November.

Build quality's pretty solid. Just a slight notch below the HD2, but still almost on par with the best in the industry.
Audio's pretty good (download HTC's Sound Enhancer app and you can enable SRS Enhancement- makes a big difference) and video's great (as you'd expect on such a large screen). The screen's not quite as eye-popping as the AMOLED or Super LCD panels in some other WP7/Android phones, but I still prefer having the larger screen size.
Battery life is about average for a big smartphone. I typically charge it at night, so as long as it lasts for a full day of moderate to heavy use (which it does), it's fine for me. If I forget to charge, it'll last through most of a second day (of light use).
Hey all,
I'm wanting to get another Android phone as I got rid of my HTC Wildfire. I'm thinking about getting the G1 as its cheap and seems as though it can perform well.
I'm looking at buying one that is locked to T-Mobile and has the newest carrier updates on. My question is can it be unlocked? and does Cyanogen mod perform well?
Thanks!
It would be worth having one now, but getting one from fresh... that would depend on how cheap you can get one and if you think you need a hard-QWERTY. The G1 is quite old... and you may be more content with adding more funds for a G2.
I recently bought a G1 for cheap, and it is great currently have it running gingerbread which works really quite well, a lot more so then i thought cyanogenmon 6 did.
I also believe that they can be unlocked quite easily as well
Thanks for the info
I'm looking at a G1 also, coming from a CDMA Moment with 2.2.2 and looking to switch to GSM. The Moment has a faster processor(?) but is not a very good at some things, like being a phone. Is the G1 a good PHONE? I can get a good ROM for the things I want but does the phone part work well?
G1 okay phone, easy to mod. if you like tinkering.
G1 is an okay phone. My partner at work uses a Blackberry, he can't hear the person at the other end without an ear piece, I don't have that issue on my G1.
I do NOT love my G1, it's bulky/heavy and I don't feel the build quality is as good as some of the other phones. The Speaker is on the back of the phone, opposite from the display - seriously who does that? Samsung for example always puts the speaker above the main screen.
The Keyboard has very small keys but it IS a 5 row keyboard, you can get good with some practice, but some of the newer phones, ex: T-Mobile Sidekick 4G has a keyboard/CPU/display that I almost can't believe how good it is, however they have the dumbest overlay I've ever seen, haha, can't have it all I guess.
The G1 is reliable, it's just not very pretty, if it's cheap, it's a deal.
Hi,
I am contemplating putting my G1 up for sale.
It is the one in my Signature.
Lemme know.
Heeter
If you don't play big games, g1 is enough, however, you cannot buy a new one now.
If I were you, I will buy another new phone.
I suggest a HTC Wildfire at least :/ g1 is maybe just too slow even for normal use if your gonna even get apps :'(
Honestly, no. Get a higher end device and you will be much happier.. I just got a HD2 and it is a huge improvement over the G1, and very worth investing in.
The G1 can't run many of the apps on market because it is too slow, including live wallpapers, angry birds rio, etc..
It depends on how much you can get if for. I got mine for US$50 used a few weeks a go. It's really slow and low on capacity but it's a great entry phone to Android for me. Learned a lot with it. It works great as a phone. And the best part is, if I brick it, I will not feel bad. Just pull the SIM and move to the next cheap phone I can find.
Just saw someone selling one for $30 on craigslist. I would definitely get that one if I haven't got this one.
I completely agree with the above statement ^^
I would love to get an G1 for a nice 2nd/back up phone since my bb 8900 curve have self rebooting problems

will you be upgrading to WP8 and tossing your Schubert into a drawer?
will you be holding onto your Schubert?

I love my Schubert it's an awesome device...best, no baddest @$$ phone I've ever had and I just got a brand new replacement through insurance.
With WP8 launching and my contract up in Jan, I'm due for an upgrade and I'm with T-Mobile, so I will be getting a HTC WP8X device.
Hopefully (fingers crossed) by Jan there will be some level of development on the 8X... Seems like HTC devices have the easiest bootloaders to unlock, but with WP8 and all the new security measures that MS is taking who knows. Maybe with the new leaked WP8 roms devs can get a better feel for how it works and get a jump on it.
For my Shcubert though... My wife has an Android device and I want to migrate her from that and into my HD7. She would be far better off with that device than her buggy and always crashing Android. Plus it would be nice to see it get used and by someone who would appreciate it and T-Mobile is doing the unlimited talk, text and web off contract now for $50 a month it makes it a great and affordable device for her.
I've only had this for a short while, and will keep using it until it packs in. And when it eventually dies I'll be looking a Lumia 920 or an 8X,and hopefully by that time there'll be a good second hand market for a WP8 device.

glad to hear you were able to get your replacement device. wish my HD7 was under warrantly; my HD7 is slowly going... i wouldn't hold your breath for a breakthrough in WP8 for a long while, yet.

unsure what "packs in" means... i, too, won't be making the move until the second hand market for WP8 devices is cheap enough. though, on ebay, the Windows Phone 8X by HTC is nicely priced.
...cut short on time, to be more descriptive, etc with my response...
'Packs in' means breaks. Had a look on EBay there, the 8X is far to expensive for me at the minute (avg. £450),so will wait the 5-6 months I think it'll take for the second had price to be around the £200 mark.

Yeah I was lucky on getting my replacement. Sorry to hear about yours though, such a good device too!
Now that the WP8 devices are out and in the stores and I've had a chance to look at them in person... I'm leaning more towards the Nokia Lumia 810. In person the screen on the 810 looks better than the 8X and the 810 has a removable battery and you can upgrade the storage, it can take up to a 64gb SD card and possibly larger, we'll have to wait and see on that though. Plus I really like the Nokia Drive and City Lens apps, which I use frequently on my HD7. I can get a better deal on the 810 than the 8X, $99 compared to $199.

i just ordered a replacement battery for my HD7. hopefully that helps...
noticed a ribbon cable or something now covers the 3.5mm jack. haven't bothered with it, though; I don't use it.
i like the Lumia 810 compared to the Lumia 820, but i must say, that phone is huge; bigger than the HD7.
i like the Windows Phone 8X, but its lack of replace-able battery puts me off. also, lack of microSD slot is a bummer.
also, i buy my phones off-contract. my carrier doesn't need to know what device i have, plus the overall cost is lower in the long run.
Hopefully that will help!
Funny that you mention that... On my old HD7 I had noticed a strip of a ribbon protruding into the 3.5mm jack too, although I have 2000 + songs on mine and connect it to my car stereo quite frequently. Haven't noticed it yet on the new device though.
I'm a HTC fan but the non-removable battery and no microSD card slot was a real deal breaker on the 8X for me. I think HTC dropped the ball on that one... All WP8 devices should have a microSD card slot and I'm not sure what they were thinking with the non-removal battery, other than a short life span of the device, which means buy a new one.
Both the 8X and 810 are pretty large devices, but the 8X is definitely lighter. At least the 810 doesn't feel like a brick in your hand like the 920.
I do agree it's definitely cheaper to buy one out right or slightly used and be off contact in the long run. This has been my first fully contract device and it's had it's ups and downs. The monthly bill sucks, but I'm at the end of my contract and I just got a brand new HD7, that i will pass onto my wife and I can activate it on T-Mobile monthly with unlimited talk, text and web for $50. That's not bad, I almost ended my 2yr contract to switch over to that but I wanted to get a deal on a new WP8 device, which I will. I just got a letter in the mail a couple weeks ago from T-Mobile stating that they will be merging with MetroPCS in the 1st quarter of 2013 and are now encouraging the "Bring in your own phone" from other carriers for the unlimited plan for $50 a month, I think their trying to get the iPhone crowd to use their service. I though that was interesting!

about the ribbon strip covering the headphone jack... it fell out by itself, without any negative effects.
also, I am no longer the owner of an HD7. one day, I hope to own an HD7S.

I am familiar with both HD7 and HD7S. and I actually was looking at a new HD7S on eBay, but I can't justify spending the money.
HD7 is the best device I ever had, really happy with it, so until some over inspired developer/hacker brings us a full unlocked rom for wp8 device I will keep and take care of it! And really I don't mind if it takes a year or more...Long Life to the HD7!!!
i getting one soon for fun & cheap too ... but it has problem. Camera don't work/open. Message don't work but phone and internet work.. im guessing software/rom? so i'll be around asking questions. The last time im using window phone is SE Xperia x1 running WP 6.5. whats ur prediction on the htc hd7 im getting soon? hardware or software?

I recently got the Lumia 810, for WP8 dev, but have been using the Mozart, as my daily. I do miss the HD7. I love the size of the Mozart, but the screen is too small; I keep pressing something I don't intend too.

Camera not working could be a software issue, but most likely a hardware issue.
what of the messaging isn't working? SMS? MMS? phone calls work?

1st thing i plan to do is to restore it. 2nd, diy a Y usb cable.

ok i finally had the the hd7 on my hand. it looking pretty good in person
the camera work. so no hardware issue. but still got the sms issue, i cant seem to send and receive any kind of message.
Things that make me mad is that it has no mmc. wtf!. oh well its cheap alright. so i need info of what kind of micro sd does it use and how many gb it support. i ready about class 4 and 2. but how about 8gb micro sd? would it also require class 2 and 4? im only aiming for 8gb.
and can i restore it using the "volume up + down - Power button" without mmc in place?
Hey there
So, my HTC 8x is about to die, I guess, and I am looking for a new phone. With Ubuntu touch and all comming up, I think the HTC One is the best piece of hardware out there currently (also I love the design). The only thing I don't like about it is the price... it's still around 450€ where I live.
So, me, never paying attention to price developements, was wondering if it makes any difference if I buy it now, or wait until "The All New One" comes out.
Also can anyone give me an update on the Ubuntu touch developement progress for the One?! - I only find very contradictory comments on the Internet - some say, it's almost done, others claim it will never happen.
Or do you say the One is crap and I should go for another phone? I really want to try Ubuntu touch, so that's one of my priorities, next to "flagship-hardware"

I have the HTC One and it's great.
However, if you're looking for something at a lower price, why don't you check the Nexus 5? It's for sure the best value for money.
I think it's also better for unofficial development (even if I can't complain with the One).
As fas as I could find, it's better supported by Ubuntu Touch (but never tried).

Bro, the HTC One is an AMAZING handset and my personal favourite of 2013. The speakers and design and build quality are lightyears ahead of the Nexus 5. But, the 2014 edition of the One will be released on the 25th of March. I say that the updated One would be something you should definitely wait for.
Regarding Ubuntu Touch, Canonical isn't really doing much at the moment. I guess that once they release a phone with Ubuntu Touch, the OS will be ported to the One. There is a port for the One. It lacks connectivity though
Thanks
I know the One is an awesome piece of Hardware the Nexus 5 not so much, a friend has it, and it feels really cheap.
I will for sure not be going to buy the "The All New One" - I bet it's going to be even more awesome, but I'm not willing to spend 650€ on a new phone...
What I was actually wondering is, if anyone knows how the release of the new One will affect the One's price - I have never payed any attention on price-developenemts, and so I'm asking you And I don't mean used deviced, but new ones from Amazon or something...
(Also does anyone use The One without Google? I do use google mail, calendar and contacts, but I don't want them to know about every step I make...)
