got my n1 2 months back, was on stock for the first month and then rooted and ran custom rom without unlocking the bootloader. after going thru many posts, i feel it would be better to unlock the bootloader. so after i do "fastboot oem unlock" , eveything will be wiped. so does this mean that i would be back on stock rom, recovery ?
and do i need to root again ?
Data will be wiped. Recovery and ROM will be the same. I too rooted and ran cm7 for a long time before unlocking the bootloader.
Easiest way would be to boot into recovery, do a nandroid backup.
Unlock the bootloader, boot back into recovery and nandroid restore.
thanx for ur quick reply baseballfanz . i have made a nandroid backup of my current rom. would i need to root it again or just boot in to recovery and restore it?

Since it is pre-rooted, I see no need of re-rooting before re-applying the nandroid backup.

So backup then unlock then restore is enough right?

Like theshawty said, once you restore the nandroid you're back with a rooted ROM already. No need to do anything further.

Sure thing. Remember, if you did a full nandroid backup, then a full nandroid restore, you're restoring your exact ROM as if you never did anything to it.
Thanx guys  .
Will do as u ppl said and report back once i am done.

hi guys jus nw unlocked my bootloader following ur steps. infact it was so easy than i thought . backingup, unlocking n restoring all took about 15 mins.
and my phone looks exactly hw it was before unlocking the bootloader (call log, msg, notes, calendar)
Thanx to CWM recovery, it was so simple and great.
Edit: i am still S-ON. I thought unlocking gives me S-OFF?
You don't need S-off on the N1, unlocking the bootloader gives you pretty much the same result...
Thanx DR. Glad to knw

EDIT: SOLVED BY NAND RESTORE
This happened after an attempt to flash darkraider on top of att ICS RUU. Phone got stuck at boot animation for ICS roms and HTC screen for GB roms. Tried reverting using RUUs (CINGULAR GB and ATT ICS) but it doesn't help.
Also tried flashing boot.img from the customized ROMs without success.
It was a Canadian Rogers Raider with S-OFF and unlocked bootloader. Any help would be appreciated!

This happened to me... What i did is flash stock boot.img kernel first through the htc vivid tool... Then flash the stock ruu. Zip to the phone... Hopefully you made a nand backup because you'll have to reatore your back up

Thanks for the reply; Im just to report back that a restore worked!
Still baffled tho. Thought RUU is the ultimate reverting tool. Anyway another great reason to do backup!

Hi,Stuck boot anim。。。 It happened to me too
And I found the reason。Because of that TOUCH RECOVERY。
So,I tried to use RUU to restore。But it doesn't work。I flashed AT&T RUU,then swith to Australian RUU again and again。
Finally, I knew。This couldn't work!
Then I tried to change the CID。change super CID 11111111 to any CID you figure out。Like 987654321
Then It works!! But My Velocity can not use the SuperCID anymore。
and in my opinion, I think it's caused by TOUCH RECOVERY

Interesting cuz I was using the twrp touch recovery to flash darkraider on top if at&t ics ruu.
I didn't change cid. After a nand restore now everything works fine.
Funny thing is the backup was done in twrp so I used that to restore then used the at&t ics ruu t. After that I installed wcxrecovery and darkraider. I was indeed suspecting somethingwrong with the touch recoverycuz that vs wcx is the only difference from the guide.

This thread has been brought to you by stgeorge88. Who would like to remind you, if you are going to mess around on a phone after rooting, make sure you do a nandroid backup before messing with anything and finding out the RUU will not help and then finding out your screwed.

Where can I find a copy of a nand backup so I can apply it to my vivid. I'm stuck on boot anim and didn't back up my own. Live and learn I guess.
Sorry, got it up again with ruu...

I saw this thread just now. I own a HTC Velocity 4G. The Aussie version of the vivid and the same thing happened to me but the problem for me is that i am not S-OFF. When i try to use the RUU i get error 140 bootloader error. I don't understand the problem could one of you guys help me out. Walk me through what i should do.
Many thanks
I don't think you're going to be able to use an ruu to solve your problem because your rom version is higher than the ruu, but since you're s-on, when you flash a rom, do you flash the boot.img before in fastboot because some roms boot without the boot.img flashed, but others won't. If that doesn't work you'll have to s-off because your phone won't let the ruu work for a downgrade.
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Just in cases you decide not to revert to stock
I'm a little wiser now and I'm sure I'll have to go s off to get any further.
Thanks for helping.

In fact, you can restore at any time.
But if not on stock kernel, after restore, the phone will get soft-brick.
So it's better to restore after flashing the stock rom.

so you are RELOCKED and want recovery...ain't gonna happen
you have 2 choices:
locked------no recovery
unlocked----yes recovery
you can NOT have recovery while bootloader is locked

Yeah your wrong or confused. You have to be unlocked for a CUSTOM recovery. The OP is looking for stock recovery.
@OP
On one of mike's sticky posts on the one forum should have the stock recovery on it.

As said, no RUU. What do you have on your phone now? Rooted? Custom Rom? Custom Recovery? Locked/unlocked bootloader?

Rooted, Custom Rom (Insert Coin), TWRP , unlocked bootloader (used HTC dev to do that).
Download this 4.4.2 Wind TWRP Nandroid zip, and unzip.. Thanks to @themastersb https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B2GBz7X2uObaM1hfN1E3VU1XNzg&usp=sharing
There is no recovery that I know of, so you will have to look for one that hopefully works. Go through my restore to stock thread to how to restore with above nandroid

Will give it a try. Thanks.
Just one last question. After doing the above procedure I will be able to receive OTA updates? and the link you provided has Sense 5.5 or Sense 6 ?
I dont know the Sense version, but I will guess to be 5.5
You have to follow the process in my guide as well to be back on stock.. Also, try to S-OFF as is to maybe have better recovery options.
I plan on flashing the stock recovery to unroot and keep it just stock. I'm on 1.54.654.10 (or 651 I forgot exactly) and found the recovery for the one right below mine (1.54.651.9) and was wondering if I can just flash that recovery since I can't find the one for my specific version and take the update
Sent from my 831C using XDA-FORUM, powered by appyet.com
Yes, you can flash that recovery. You'll need to make sure that the ROM you're running is fairly stock and doesn't haven't any modifications to /system.

Thank you by the way for all your help from this post and the last one, I was finally able to get it back on the official updates and without root all thanks to your help :highfive: I may end up doing S-Off and rooting later down the road but for now I'm happy with this just stock.
Glad to help:thumbup:
