I have a refurb I897UCKB2 that I rooted and later lost USB connectivity. It is not drivers, pcs, or cables - I tried multiple and they all work for other Captivates. I have root explorer, titanium backup, etc working. I searched for files >1 and <60 days and found MANY in /system/xbin beyond the 3 that come on stock kb2. Can I safely use root explorer to delete them since it already has root access and is in memory? Will I be able to uninstall super-user after? What is the best process to remove roor traces without flashing via ODIN. I can transfer files wirelessly if that helps. Come on gurus... Who can figure out the best solution...

I will try that and report back. However, once the superuser app is gone I have no way to re-root without USB and I really doubt it will delete all those system files. I normally am willing to give anything a shot but I only have one chance to clean up before sending it back. I created a new thread to clearly show what I am up against and it is NOT a typical problem. There is no "automated" way that I can use (with high confidence) so I think a manual process makes sense in this case. I got no other feedback. I do appreciate your help - I just want to see if there are other options since it could easily wind up unrooted with no way to re-root and lots of trace files left over...

I highly doubt samsung will take the time to go through your returned phones file system to make sure you didn't root. If they did that to your phone they would do that with all of them, that is a waste of man hours thus a waste of money for them.
They will fix the usb, reflash/master clear it, then give it to another person...

Thanks - my only concern is that they could have automated the check. Run a program that generates a "checksum" of stock files that can't change without root and they would know immediately. You are probably right but what I listed would no be hard at all..

Disclaimer: I am still an android noob. Most of the information below is speculation based on what little i do know. Please flame accordingly
Some quick browsing came up with this link...
http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/170237-heres-how-you-unroot-your-captivate.html
The first post has a zip you can download to remove root. If you have the ability to sync files via network (such as dropbox) you can download the file to a PC and transfer it to your SD that way. Just replace the update.zip that you used to root the phone in the first place with the one you download through the link and run it through recovery mode.
(Note: you may be able to download it directly through the phone, haven't tried it so i dont know if it will work that way)
I do not know if this will remove any "trace" of the phone being rooted such as modified or extra files but it might be a good start..
If you want to do a full wipe such as ODIN (w/o cables) i think you can find the stock ROM somewhere that you could flash with CWM and then reflash the 2e recovery to cover up your tracks. Again, i dont know what specific traces, if any, this may leave on your phone as "evidence".
I dont have the specific links for the stock ROM or recovery but some googling should turn something up pretty quickly.
If you have Wifi access, search to the forum for the stock 2.2 cwm flashable. I've got that floating around on my PC somewhere. I used to use that when I would Odin to stock 2.1, the install CWM, then flash stock 2.2 on top. That would get rid of root.
Edit, Heh, just saw the last paragraph in the post above. Yeah, what he said.
I wiped it via factory reset
Thanks but I didn't use ODIN because there would be no way to get KB2. I eventually unrooted and then did a factory reset. The extra files were still there but I am sending it back the way it is.
Forgive me for being a noob here, but there is a app called Z4 root get the apk file install it and select unroot....!
it will uninstall superuser !
So I am a new person and therefor can not post this in the development thread under the forum where I feel it would belong with the other root related questions.... So i followed the SUPER GUIDE to root my phone (Thank you so much Slapshot and PirateGhost, I was beginning to regret not getting a skyrocket until I found your thread). My super user is running into an issue I can not seem to fix.....
Maybe this is simple or maybe I really messed something up....
Basically none of my apps have root anymore (they did at one point and to my knowledge I change nothing...)
When I go to the Super User app to update my binaries and hopefully get any issues resolved I am greeted by the following error message in the update log: "Failed to find currently installed SU binary. Update cannot continue"
Is there a resolution for this? I have not found anyone even running into the same issue on the Vivid.....
A little nervous.... I didnt have near this many issues rooting my ATRIX and modding the living daylights out of that.
Have you checked with Root Checker Basic to see if you even have Root? If you didn't follow the Super Guide step by step your phone could have relocked after you turned your phone off/on.
If it still fails to update you could try SuperUser Update Fixer.
Yes I have check with root checker.
This may be a dumb question but how do I uninstall Superuser? When I go to the typical application management it does not give me the option. I have done an install again to overwrite the files and nothing changed there.
I followed the instructions step by step (though obviously I messed up somewhere...)

Interesting... maybe your root didn't stick. We had a little trouble with that before but pirateghost fixed the CWM ROOT zip. You have a working CWM Recovery, correct?
In the superguide, I have a second option for root in case the first doesn't work. In your case, go ahead and try the second option. The one involving the supertool. That should get you perm root. If that doesn't even work, then we might have to put you back to stock and go at it again.
EDIT: BEFORE TRYING THE SUPERTOOL, try flashing the new CWM ROOT VER2 zip from CWM recovery and see if root sticks.
Slapshot, thank you for checking the General Thread, I really do appreciate that. I have tried both methods multiple times since the root failure seeing as so many people said they had to run the methods multiple times to make them stick (this admittedly may be part of the issue). The most recent one has been the CWM ROOT VER2. Still no dice. Is there a method to remove and re install super user? Or am I reading into the error too literally and instead I just basically do not have root.

No problem. At this point I think you may just not have root... but first, go ahead and go into bootloader (power off, then power on while holding power and vol down). Does your device say unlocked?
*Just a clarification*
You have to unroot your phone to get rid of it Idk why I put uninstall/reinstall earlier...still out there from last night I guess.

Yes the device still says unlocked. That was one of the first things I checked... Haha....
As I said ive flashed the rooted CWM and it says it went over successfully.
If i use the Zerg exploit it still seems to go over successfully (I realize this has a tenancy to mess with internal storage and only provide a temp root but i do not even get that temp root).
How would I unroot my device? Do you mean flash to stock and relock my boot loader?
As I said I have flashed several devices in the past (Atrix, eee pad transformer, HTC Inspire, HTC DINC, SAMSUNG GALAXY S T-Mobile) but I am not completely up to date on all of the technical terms...

I'm baffled as to what I did wrong during the initial root of zv7 software. I can't unroot, can't recover, can't root to zv8 or upgrade. I'm using MT's AIO root app and just can't seem to understand. I guess there's a reason I'm a noob. this is what i get:
unable to open log device "/dev/log/main" no such file or directory
And then from there it won't add new root files, remove trash etc.

You can't keep gingervolt as of right now, but I'm sure a vz8 gingervolt will be coming out. I would first make sure you take an image with cmw before you do anything with your phone.
I first rooted the the device like in the first thread about maintaining root from vz7 to vz8 thread. It worked after I got LGNPST working, but I still wanted CWM. When MT came out with the script, I gave that a try but had permission issues. If you have an image you can restore to pre gingervolt, I would try that, then use MT's tool to apply stock recovery. I had to run the tool twice before it would take and I didn't get anything puking at me and I got stock recovery. Make sure you still have root. I then prepare for update, update, then apply root and cmw.
If you don't have a pre gingervolt image, Follow the instructions to put the vz7 tot back on your phone found here. Then root only. After you have root, I would then prep for vz8, update, then root and install cmw.
If everything is successful, I would take a post install image with cmw.
Thanks a bunch. I will get to this tonight and let you know the results. I have confidence it will work. Since I'm a noob, it won't let me post an image, but I'll upload it to photobucket and hyperlink. Thanks again! PM me your paypal and I will throw some scratch your way.
I'm new to this also so it is some trial and error. Just keep working at it. No need to send me any money. If you want to make a donation, send it to MT, Spc.Hicks or one of the other developers who keep this phone going.
Here's where I'm at with the process.
Still rooted on zv7. Tried to do stock recovery (unroot with zv7 stock rom) but wouldn't recognize my battery or sim card. I am only able to run rooted zv7 with GV 2.0 in order to use all functions of phone. Unable to update OTA to zv8. The stock zv7 will not work, therefore had to flash GV2.0 with root. The problems I had before was sound not working, music player plays, but no sound, and when the phone was on and the screen would turn off automatically, it wouldn't turn back on. The buttons along the bottom would light up, but no screen. It was at this point that I had to return to rooted zv7 with GV2.0.
The Update Process
Hey I had a lot of trouble coming from MT's 2.0 V7 to V8 Root with Revovery. Let me see if I can help. This method worked for me. Follow it if you like.
1. First start from scratch using LGPST and V7 .TOT. Just follow the instuctions from the [FIX] Updated by accident? thread by hilong08.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211295
I did have trouble installing the .dll. Just run the CMD as an administrator to install it without errors.
2. Run the old All in one from MT to root your phone only.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348557
3. Once its rooted download terminal emulator from the market and do this
Type su and then enter you should see a "#". Next type echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop. It should create a file called local.prop in your /data directory.
you could manually do it with root explorer too.
4. Now wait for the Verizon OTA (over the air) update or manually search.
5. Now you should be on V8.
6. Run the AIO bat by MT to root and install CWM , option 2. I believe we manually did option 1 so theres no need to do it once on V8.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566729
7. You should be root with CWM. I thought I didnt install this right the first time after about 3 fresh installs over a period of 2 days. CWM is installed man, even if you dont see it, i had to use quick boot from the market to boot into revovery.
Another thing if your phone loses sound check your /data/local.prop and change it to local.prop.bak and reboot. I also had a problem and it was freaking me out.
good luck
Stop V8 notifications
If you want to keep your phone from trying to update while in V7, use root explorer to rename /system/lib/ libdme_main.so to libdme_main.bak; I renamed three days ago with no update notifications to date. http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1236896.html
I'm still not getting anywhere. I'm back to root with gv2.0 with no sound. I'm just afraid to do anything else. Can someone call me or do a remote session? I'm ****ing retarded.
No no no. Go to development section and flash the v8 tot. Easiest way to get to v8

I'm actually considering going back to ginger volt 2.0. I really don't notice any differences on v8 except that I have a bunch of bloatware. I hear you. I'm holding off until MT gets a new and stable Gingervolt released for it. My phone works just fine on V7 w/GV2.0. Why fix something that isn't broken?
Ok I finally got my phone back to stable working condition with gingervolt and root on zv7. Can someone tell me step-by-step how to stop the zv8 update? Were going to have to dig deep on this one. I'm shallow on my terminology, and have no clue if I even have root explorer, or how to use it. I really wish there were college classes on how to understand this stuff. I know it's linux based, but you really have to be passionate about this stuff to understand. If you guys wanted to know about bikes, I could tell you how to build one from scratch! To each their own i suppose. Thanks in advance for everyone's help getting me this far. I really do appreciate all your hard work.

Noobzilla,
Here is how another user took care of the update. Take some time and look through the development section here as well. I know there are some ways to move to the update and maintain the root as well.

Lot of us are waiting for MT to release GV 2.1 with V8 update. I was in your boat and planning to go back to stock just to see how V8 updates looks like. After reading the forms a lot of us decide to wait for new release. I would honestly suggest to wait for few weeks, stock V8 has so much bloat that you may not like it. I would suggest to donate to MT and other developers because they really rock. Just my 2 cents.

Noob you need to get back all the way stock on zv7 so either use the zv7.tot file or flash the zv7 backup my has posted in the development section after you have flashed the zv7 backup your going to run the zv7 all in one and select unroot this will unroot and put stock recovery on your phone after you have stock recovery and no root your going to run Mrs new all in one to get you where you need to be I haven't done this yet so you may have to run the other all in one selecting the option root only then run the new all in one easiest way for help is getting on the irc channel you might have to wait a little bit for help but someone will show up. Also give thanks to mt for creating this all in one for you guys eliminating the need for you guys having to learn how to use adb but I encourage everyone to get the sdk and learn how to use adb as your next phone may not have options such as a all in one check out this thread in the thunderbolt forum on how to root unlock and install cwm recovery on it. It will really make you appreciate all the work my has put into making these all in ones the script doesn't know what to do until my has typed all this stuff already.
Here is the thunderbolt method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12159325 that's not exactly what's being done on the revolution but still a good read but imagine having to do all that to get root on your phone I encourage reading it as it will help you understand what's going on in a script that particular method was published by jcase who is an awesome exploit finder and this method includes getting temp root in order to flash an older hboot version allowing you to downgrade to a version that had already been unlocked and getting root there enabling you to get perma root and a unlocked bootloader and involves using a terminal and adb and will really get you comfortable with adb and appreciate all the keystrokes mt has saved you. *Also do not try that thunderbolt method on your revolution* I'm not positive what will happen but I am confident it will not be good.

Sounds like everyone is waiting for MT to push a new version of GV. I have decided to do the same. I used Root Explorer to change the file extension of the update file. I did this about a day after my last post on this thread and had no problems. Running GV and flashing Fusion as we speak on ZV7. Phone works great. Thanks for everyone's help!
New Revo won't work with A I O, can't stand the bloat someone tell me please. Is anyone working on a root for this POS update.
oh im sure
im sure MT is on the job, but im sure a lil donatin to him would motivate him a lil.... but yeah anyway the thread "keep root through zv8" or whatever is still the only way that the general public knows about... but im sure u already knew that.
I figured as much about MT, (your the man) but i ask because my old revo worked fine with his AIO and maintain root method, but the new one i got that came pre-loaded with Zv8 wont, even after flashing several times back to zv7 and so on.
If you're readin this MT i am to poor to donate money but im willing to be a guinea pig. lol

There is something you aren't doing right even if on ZV8.. You can downgrade to ZV7, then Root only with the original AIO, then create the local.prop file then download the update, then use the 2nd AIO to maintain root, install CWM, then Broken Out.
I'm inclined to believe you because aio worked the first time but then zv8 would fail to regain root and install cwm it would say failed to find path, then flashing back with .tot to zv7 and even doin a factory reset back to stock and trying again now aio won't even root zv7 it just says failed to find path and runs through real quick, if you have any suggestions I would appreciate them.
And by the first time I mean I flashed back to zv7 rooted, flashed maintain root then ota updated then zv8 aio would fail
I have tried many processes over and over again and can recall once the first all in one wouldn't root my phone. I just did a factory reset then after reboot ran the lg-setup then flashed the v7.tot again then was able to root only after that reboot.
If that doesn't work, I don't know what will but good luck
Yah tried that, no luck, well see what mt comes up with. This is a new recertified phone and it has some wierd usb issues, everytime I reflash I have to reboot to be able to use change usb connection, plus now when flash tots I dont lose phone settings like I used to,

Money is something I have, root, I do not. It sounds like MT is the man when it comes to rooting. I would be glad to make a sizeable donation thru pay pal if I knew it would go directly to helping me game root access for my lg revolution running zv8.
See I would do the downgrading option everyone is talking about but those methods are only for pc ( I mean those download files ). I run a mac.
But seriously, I would love to have root. I used to use an iphone and was always jailbreaking. I love having that type of access so any help would be awesome!!

That means nothing. I flash TOT's all the time and never loose settings or apps.
As for MT developing a root process for this phone, while I appreciate all the work he has put into this phone and his skill set, what he does and what root exploiters do are two entirely different things. MT is just gracious enough to create easy to use AIO scripts for everyone to use. I do not see a new root process coming unless another exploit is found and works on this phone.
If I am incorrect about this then MT can feel free to correct me.

+1 For root all I have found is the exploit for keeping root through the update. As for writing a fresh exploit, there are a couple of guys that specialize in it. Jcase and djrbliss are 2 of the best around. The only problem I see is that zv8 has 0 access to the data partition without root, and so what other partitions are blocked. That is why the spectrum version does not work right off of the bat.

nevermind, just had to push cwm through adb still don't know why aio zv8 failed oh well im good now, and mt thanks for debloating and debingin. lovin broken out
Well I THINK I have found WHY I cant OTA ZV8
OK. I have found somthing interesting. I have 2 Revos. BOTH are now in test mode for reasons I am to embarrased to go into. (dang Noob screwups)
ANYWAY I was playing around in LGNPST last night and discovered the Warranty Date (assuming Expiration) on one phone was 4/4/12 Ironicly the same day I unbricked it using the Phonebook emergency recovery. (what puts the the phone in test mode. )
BOTH phones are flagged in my Verizon account (VZW online) as NON VZW Phones. (even though they originally were)
I am starting to think that when you do an emergency recovery you flag not only test mode but the warranty date & some Verizon flag as well. So while the phone is functional ALL Verizon support goes Bye Bye (I.E. OTA updates) EVEN if you flash back to Stock. I know that none of my old Not so smart phones will update past the Warranty date, I suspect this might be somthing similar.
Can anyone VERIFY this? I can SEE the potential problem but my skills stop there. (for now.) Can anyone tell me how I might be able to dig deeper?
I'd be happy with a rooted ZV8, let alone broken out, at this time.
I dont think anyone has figured a way around test mode yet except flashing back to zv4.
If it doesn't boot after flashing .tot:
1. Pull Battery and replace
2. push power and down until you get option to wipe
3. press power to confirm and reboot.
you will be stuck in zv4 and any flashing forward after that will put you back in test mode but at least you will be able to use your phone like normal until someone figures this out, but from what I read it appears improbable.
Yeah not looking good. Test mode I can live with it's the other issues thats killing me.

If you downgrade to Zv7 so you can root install cwm and eventually get to rooted Zv8 you will not lose anything on your phone if you do it correctly.
Just Flash the Zv7 Tot and use mt's AIO method, (stopping short of broken out)
if done correctly you will lose nothing.

I rooted this phone for the sole purpose of using Titanium Backup. If the boot loader had been broken, I would have flashed a ROM from one of the very talented people that cook them.
That being said, I now want to flash the stock 4.3 upgrade. When I click the FOTA Upgrade button nothing happens, just a button click, nothing more (sound and tact). So I unrooted the phone and deleted every trace I could see. I ran 2 root checkers and verified. Then I called Tech Line. They got into my phone to try and push the upgrade, but told me that being still rooted blocked it from happening. I ran the SuperSU unroot and rebooted and pulled the battery. Again I have confirmation from boot checkers. So it should definitely be unrooted. But I haven't let Tech Line loose in it again. :fingers-crossed:
Moving on...
I followed the instructions on the Samsung site using Kies. But Kies tells me my firmware isn't supported for Kies update. Really?!?
I followed the instructions on the Droid Magic site, I downloaded file OneClick_I537UCUBMI2.zip and fired up Odin. I have tried several different versions of Odin but none use .zip files. The phone does connect to Odin both in download and stock bootup.
Should I attempt to reformat the compression of the file to .tar or similar? Could I extract and run the lone .exe file in the .zip? Is there a switch to flip, or script to run, or app to install that will allow FOTA or Kies to work?
I would rather get the FOTA button to work, but I'll take any and all thoughts or suggestions offered.
I'm working on hosting the file unrestricted temporarily so maybe it can help someone. But it's kinda big.

I think most issues related to the update have been covered pretty well. Best of luck to you.

It sounds like you have quite a bit more reading to do so that you can understand exactly what you are trying to do. That said I'll try to answer your questions.

Is TitaniumBackup the only root app you've used, have you frozen anything, installed any mods, or messed with any of the apps in your system/app folder? This will become important later.

It sounds like you need to uninstall BusyBox. Normally SuperSU will uninstall this but it sounds like you tried a different method of unrooting that may have left bits in your system and since you weren't technically rooted anymore SuperSU didn't know what it needed to do.

It sounds like you have the AT&T i537. This phone has a locked bootloader as you know. AT&T has required Samsung to lock down the i537 and will not allow them to release any firmware on Kies, this is why the software says your phone is incompatible. Basically AT&T is screwing us hard.

The website you linked to is giving you bad information. The MI2 file is not technically "Official Firmware". This is a pre-release version of the firmware that DesignGears was able to get for the community. This will become important below.

As you've stated, this MI2 zip file that you've downloaded has a single exe file in it. This exe file should be run from a computer and it will allow you to flash new firmware to your phone. BUT, as I mentioned above this is pre-release firmware. What that means is you will forever be stuck on this firmware, you will not be able to take official updates from AT&T or Samsung. If you're ok with that, then go ahead and flash your phone with the pre-release of 4.3. If you want the official 4.3 update you have a little work to do. Above I asked you if you messed with any of the files in system/app, this is because the official update file can be downloaded and can even be flashed but it checks nearly every file in the system/app folder to make sure that it is the original file. If you've modified anything in there, the update is going to fail.
I'm going to post a few links of stuff you should read, but there is definitely a lot more that you should be reading.
How to flash stock MF3 - this is most likely the firmware you are on, but this thread will tell you how to get it back to stock, the way it was when you took it out of the box. This should allow you to take the official 4.3 update if other methods don't work.
MF1 Pre-release (4.2.2) - this is a pre-release of 4.2.2, you should read this.
MI2 Pre-release (4.3) - this is a pre-release of 4.3, read this thread to understand the benefits and drawbacks of flashing this pre-release firmware.
Official 4.3 Update Thread - this tell you what you need to do to try to update your phone to the official version of 4.3. Currently there is to way to root the official 4.3.
SafeStrap Thread - this will allow you to flash TouchWiz 4.2.2 based ROMs on your phone. Again, you need to read before you do anything. There's actually a lot we can do even though our bootloader is locked.
I can't stress enough how important it is to read. Once you've read everything and you think you understand what you're doing, READ MORE. There's always somebody who's done what you're trying to do and someone has more than likely given the answers you're looking for. Read as much as you can and you can avoid bricking your phone and ending up with a paperweight.
Good luck and us know if you have any questions, everybody is here to help.
You mentioned something I had forgotten, I did install app quarantine so I could remove the samsung and att apps from my drawer. So i went back and installed active root and app quarantine and unlocked the apps. But it seems I must have also deleted /system/apps/wssyncmldm.apk and .../KNOXAgent.apk. I can't believe that I deleted them instead of renaming them like I normally would, but it seems that's what I did.
So I'm hoping that some of you can copy these files to a google drive or something so i can reinstall them. pretty please?
If all else fails, i have insurance so my phone might get broken in a fall while doing some dangerous house work tomorrow.

You need to read the links I posted, all of this is explained including how to get the apps back that you deleted.
I so much miss being able to just flash with clockworkmod. Things were so much easier.
