[Q] Confused regarding flashing ROM Sensation XL - HTC Sensation XL

Hi,
quick question. i would of posted on forum but im under 10 posts so cannot.
I am trying to install the rom BinDroid SXL RUNMED2.5 V1.3 on my Sensation XL but am slighty confused.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420841
How to Install
Get ROOT on your Device
Get RECOVERY on your Device
Get BinDroid.zip on your Device
Reboot in RECOVERY, flash BinDroid_SensationXL_TotalWipe.zip, download @ bottom of 3rd post
Reboot to Bootloader and Flash THIS BOOT.IMG | Commandline: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Flash BinDroid.zip
Reboot
HAVE FUN

Click to collapse
But then read the install kernal bit on post 2.
All that I have done so far is unlock bootloader from HTCDEV and installed the recovery rom on post 1 step 2.
do i just put bindroid on cd and wipe etc or do i have to install some kernal first?
Many Thanks in Advanced
Mark

No, you do not have to install the Kernel...that is optional.
The kernel will give you a few other benefits, such as overclocking and stuff, but it is not necessary for the ROM to work.

Have you rooted the phone? Have you got CWM on the phone?
You won't be able to just put BinDroid on over the stock rom.
Best thing I can suggest is read my guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466436 Its a long read but its all you need to know

[Q] Install zip from SD Card option not visible

I recently got a Incredible S and was considering rooting it. So I went through the topics here and people kept mentioning the option you see on the main menu to "install zip from SD Card".
Just to ensure that I knew everything before I went ahead and rooted, I went to the HBoot screen(volume down and power). My phone was locked(S-ON) and on the screen I could not see any option to "install zip from SD Card". Am I missing something? I am posting a picture of my Hboot screen.
Also something I noticed was that the screen would refresh and automatically run a check to see if any images were present on the sd card. Is this normal?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but I am confused and just wanted to be sure.
To be able to see that option you require to root, then flash clockwork mod recovery.
Then you will have the modified recovery with that option to flash roms.
1. Root with Revolutionary
2. Flash ClockwordMod Recovery (To find out how to do this go HERE)
Thanks neo, that helps a lot.

Only s-off is gained with revolutionary your going to need to flash SU to gain root
Yes my mistake. Its in the thread on how to flash anyway.

Yea, I just went to the Revolutionary IRC channel and they were quite helpful. The rooting was quick and easy

Hi Markj338,
You installed the ICS-4.0.3 (incredible S)?
What team?
This version you have installed, has any bug?
thanks.
No? What are you talking about?
I downgraded, s-offed, rooted, and installed recovery, then I flashed a few different roms, before flashing trinity sensation XL as my daily rom

[Q] Pre - Flashing Questions?

Hey once again its me!
Just a few questions away from flashing Virtuous Affinity 2.05.0!
1. I have made a backup using 4Ext, does that mean i still have to make one with Nandroid?
2. Whats with all these radios? Can I use the radio
--------------------------------------
3805.06.03.03_M
--------------------------------------
for Virtuous Affinity?
3. Would this guide to flash something by Vampire36 be ok?
---------------------------------------------------------
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257731
----------------------------------------------------------
4. Anything Else?
1. No
2. Try not to change your radio if it works fine, but if you decide to it anyway avoid to downgrade, it will brick your phone
3. I do the following steps : -reboot to recovery
->backup(you already done this step)
-format all partitions(except SDcard)
-install zip from SDcard
-reboot system
4. No
and wat are kernels and would i need to update mine?

I am using Virtuous Affinity, and i never flashed an alternative kernel.
Thanks, But ...
Thanks,
and which recovery did you use.
I had CWM but changed to ext4 recovery because heard it's easier and user friendly. So if i used ext4 recovery what would be the steps?
and for future reference how would i remove ext4 recovery and go back to CWM if I wanted to?
I use 4ext, i like it to more then CWM. The steps are from my first post in this thread.
If you want to return to CWM the easiest way is to install Rom Manager from Play Store and install it from there.
ok so your method is 100% safe and guaranteed success?
EDIT: What happens if i get into a bootloop (where i get stuck at the HTC screen), do i just boot into recovery and flash my backup?
nothing is 100% safe, but that's the way i would do a change of rom/recovery

so you would prefer your method instead of
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257731
because it says thats the perfect way to flash...
No offense, this is my last response, you have to try to read/search the forum for the answers you need. And you don't need to thank me on every post(appreciated but not needed).
I don't say that vampire36's method is wrong, i never tried it. I think my method does the job. I flash a minimum of five rom's per week(still no problems).

CWM / RA Recovery and custom hboot

Hi,
I want to flash the Jelly-Bean-Rom of reider on my Nexus one. I am currently running on CM7.2 and have already installed 4ext-Recovery and Blackrose.
Afaikt are there problems with 4ext at the moment when you want to flash custom hboots on your NexusOne. So my question is, is it possible to just install CWM or RA-Recovery on my CM7.2 and flash the needed hboot afterwards? Do I need a special recovery?
I read many manuals how to flash a custom hboot etc. but I wasn't able to find a definitive answer, if I have to install Recovery again after upgrading hboot or not. _And_ if I need a special recovery.
Help is appreciated!

You don't need any special recovery if you flash the partition scheme via fastboot. How this works is explained in the Evervolv Jellybean Thread. Your recovery should be untouched by this procedure. Alternatively you can switch your recovery to use flashable zips from this thread, but it is not necessary.
Run or phone at normal mode. Connect USB to or phone open black rose there are options u can choose pick the one that resizes or hbot.

if you are flashing hboot via fastboot/blackrose then u dont need to change recovery.
if u want to change hboot via recovery(4ext) then follow this post and see if it helps. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30271020&postcount=124
and yes you can change to either cwm or amon n flash those hboots. cos it sometimes doesnt work wid 4ext...

hello, you can't flash recovery with cwm. or i don't know how to do. you have to push it into your phone with sdk ,nothing complicated, just follow step by step tuto for flashing recovery with android sdk.
Enjoy
Hey, once you flash RUU you dont need to flash stock recovery since it already exists
Seeing a red triangle in stock recovery is very obvious as you cant get into stock recovery
Infact thats why we need custom recovery!!!
You getting my point??!!
So do nothing mor
You are perfectly stock after RUU
Get sON if you want to so that you make your phone as it was on its first day

There is no ROM installed on your deivce or you have flashed the wrong img.file..If im not mistaken u have flashed it over and s-on device was it dev unlocked? . If u can boot into recovery try to mount the sd card via the recovery and install a stock rom and flash the boot.img (extracted from the rom) via CMD
If your device says RELOCKED in bootloader just got to htcdev web and unlock the device again
thx for quick answer
i installed the boot.img of the revolution hd rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088498
i just installed the boot.img of the rom. not the rom. After that i tried flash data, dalvik... and did the restore but the phone is still blocked
i tried to install an other stock rom but all the rom i found from htc are CRC rom and i don't know how to install them (the is tar.gz file).

Ok
1. Post exactly what it says in the bootloader screen. (Take a picture or just type it all out)
2. Follow through the entire guide to the bottom. You will need S-OFF for some ROMs.
3. The stuff you find in the downloads section on htcdev.com is mostly kernel sources.
4. You need to flash the ENTIRE ROM through recovery. The boot.img just contains some kernel parts while the ROM contains the apps and the framework, bootanimation etc. (you didn't actually think an android system could be compressed down to about 1mb did you ._. )

What you downloaded from htcdev.com wasn't a ROM or an RUU. It was a kernel source...
And to find a flashable ROM, go to android development section for the HTC Incredible S here on XDA. Find a ROM, and click download link in the OP of the respective ROM page.
