How does app2ext/link2sd save RAM?

i hav no clue but afta i used S2E and link2sd my ram has jumped.. before it used to be stuck around 35-40 now around 60
Sent from my Milestone using xda premium

I use aggressive 2 settings. My ROM(pete alfonso bugless beast) Doesn't allow for me to change home locked in memory, so i'm not sure if that changes anything.

Latest versions would fix that... I just posted updated 9 RC5

How about a link? ;-)

I'm experiencing similar behaviour - after moving lots of apps to my ext4 partition via Link2SD my old stone seems to be more responsive.

I don't know
I abandoned CM7 some time ago because of serious performance issues when using the camera and Maps while having the launcher locked in memory.
Only thing I can tell is that I noticed a speed gain when I started to use Link2SD.
Might be applicable for other ROMs as well.
I can only assume that it's caused by more space being available for caching purposes.

Options 3, 19, 20 in RC5. I didn't put KAK, dunno if I should. (Used it b4 and still not sure if it is good or bad)

What is the best Compcache RAM Usage for you?

What is the Compcache RAM Usage that you find best on your Magic 32b? I am trying to figure out what is best for me.
I am currently using the default 8mb. I do know anything over 20mb causes problems for the browser. I'm still looking for what works the best.

From one side you are right, from the other side there are no alternatives if you want to run actual ROMs on the G1 with a decent set of background services. The alternative, i.e. running without compcache implies continuusly killing and restarting of apps by Android, which for sure will give you a worse user experience.

I prefer running very low swap (e.g. 10 swap) instead of compcache and that helps a lot..

Is it possible to get my memory usage even lower?

Currently using stock gb 2.3.6 and I just changed my wallpaper to static and deleted most of my running apps only to see my usage of ram is 400/800, any chance I can lower it even further without doing any flashing to the from...
Thanks

Either you are drunk or your keyboard has been cheating on you
+1 on the lighter ROM OR
At OP: there is an app called system tuner, where you could decide which applications should start, using that you could have a restricted start up and "might" be able to reduce memory usage.

(share) tweaker Apps that work without root

I have tried to find many such appps that can tweak your phone or make it better and faster somehow. Till now I have found only three that not only claim to work but also do work.
Note: all these apps mentioned below are free in the market /Google play. If they aren't then I will post a link to them.
1. Sgs touchscreen booster
This app supports our mini and requires no root you can set your touchscreen sensitivity. Though the name suggests Sgs it works on our mini as well.
2. Disk defragmenter by snowak
Ever wondered if defragmentation coud be done through your phone itself. This app defragmenter your sd card thus increasing its read write and access speed you will surely see a significant increase in the speed.
3. Cpu accelerator by snowak
This app has been quite in controversy cause it doesn't support most phones but luckily it somehow it does manage to reduce lagness in our mini.
Note : these apps may conflict with some custom roms and some scripts they were actually intended for those who are using stock based romz but still you can try cause they worked for me on mebitek I will be increasing the list as I find more apps you guys are free to share some apps as well I will try to include them in the list.
Last but not the least do thank me if any of this was helpful in anyway.
Thank you.
Thanks sir!
I now can get better performance for my sister Galaxy Mini, and my Mini too!
Press thanks button easier than typing it whole.

just import a lamborghini v10 engine and pour some shell motor oil.
make sure u to keep ur pistons clean and time to time check coolant levels.
also make sure the tyres have sufficient air in them bcoz when u run at high speeds it helps to keep balance..and improve ride experience..
in the end if u want full experience dont use ics on mini ...buy a better phone

CM9 was pretty much as fast as it could be on Mini, there is really nothing major that can be improved. For me, when I was using CM9 on Mini, it was way faster than any other 2.3 ROM, tough the lack of RAM made it very buggy when, for example, browsing Play Store and downloading multiple apps while reading e-mail etc.

Yeah I know but on cm10.1 armv6team changed to a new ram management which consome very less ram (on cm10.1 for galaxy mini I got ~100MB free with 20 or 19 apps installed. But I think it has to do with triple frambuffer too since androidarmv6 team disabled on cm10.1
Anyway erikcas is just working on cm9 to fix some things that are remaining for example: YouTube Reboots, Video Recording, WPA 2 Encryption (very easy to fix)
But Cm9 is still more smooth just sometimes phone freeze (maybe ram consumption? Or triple framebuffer? Or anything that I don't know ) and I hope he fix it
Will be very thankfully

You cannot reduce RAM amount the device is using... Just think. If app uses 10MB RAM it will use it like no matter what. Of course it's possible to prevent memory leaks and stuff like that, but the change is not very big. Also, I know he will fix the bugs that were still present when I left, but I was talking about the speed.

Understanding RAM
I apologize for resurrecting an older thread, but I'm having difficulties wrapping my head around the limitations of available RAM. It seems sadly lacking that the newest devices still have a ~800mb RAM limit, with a good 2/3 being used up by system processes.
In trying to understand the root issue, I guess my first question is why. Why is so little memory dedicated to running apps? Is this similar to the old 640K limitation under DOS? Why can't more memory be allocated to RAM for increased performance when running apps? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but It is my understanding that RAM and Storage (ROM) are physically the same thing, but separated by artificial "partitions" to isolate RAM from Internal Storage. If my understanding of this is correct, why can't one sacrifice Internal storage space to increase the System RAM size to, hypothetically 2gb, leaving roughly 1.3gb free for running apps so task killers or memory "babysitting" is not an issue. Wouldn't this be better and more efficient than just having a mere 300mb available for running apps?
I would appreciate it if somebody could explain and/or correct my understanding of Android memory utilization, and why System RAM seems to be such an issue.
