Hello, can anyone tell me, which is the most stable ROM for my X8, and can i have a link for it? Im already using FroyoBread 2.2.9, but it keeps restarting alot, like when going on skype, receiving calls, etc... Oh and which launcher app (that stuff like app drawer and main screen.) is the best?
You could use the search function as there were like 2 topics about this here already. There's no such thing as best ROM tbh. If you're looking for a stable ROM, go for

Although, you can try CM7 ROMs, like

Ok let me explain one thing first,, There is atleast 10 more threads asking the same question
Bottom Line is there no best rom, roms are getting changed, updated, and downgraded everyday,, you have to find you own best combo,
FOR example my best combo is At the moment Gingerdx+Alfs+Jimdemtweaks+my own tweaks,, where some other people prefer Minicm7+Naa (which is also great) , also the atifroyo+ Alfs isnt a bad combo either,, you just gotta experiment roms and find it out on ur own
And This Might Help

Hello guys,
ive been browsing the forum for a while now and been reading alot of guides, and i dont seem to understand how people have achieved to use themes where they have text icons for different apps at the bottom of the screen and such, and different slide options to unlocking the screen.
Im also unsure if this is done via root or not.
Thanks in advance
DHD FTW
I'm new to android also but I found this:
lifehacker.com/5627286/battle-of-the-android-home-screen-launchers-adw-vs-launcherpro-vs-helixlauncher
(copy and paste this link because XDA won't let me post links until my account if verified by a moderator)
This was helpful to me and may answer a few questions for you.
Launcher Pro lets you have a sliding dock if thats what youve seen. There is also a paid app that lets you copy custom icons for Launcher Pro your phone (i haven't tried it yet), but i guess all you need are text icons that have a symetrical background and then you will achieve a 'bar' accross the bottom that looks like one solid piece.
Like I said. I'm new to this too but after installing launcher pro and AWD launcher there seems to be a lot of answers to how people are achieving what you're seeing.
Furthermore, to use these launchers you don't have to flash anything. Just install like a regular app. You can then select which one you want to use when the phone boots. Or you can select from a pop up window when you press the 'Home' button.
I'm still trying to find out if I like Launcher Pro or AWD better....
Thank you so much this is exactly what I needed, I'm guessing if I was to install a custom Rom is just back up the paid version.
Thanks once again man

No problem dude, I'm just as new to this as you are...
As far as custom rom's are concerned you can back up the rom if you need to but I think most of the stock roms are are somewhere on this forum anyway if you need to return to stock after flashing a custom one.
I'm still trying to fugure out if I really need a custom rom.
The only thing I think I need is the overclock, which I could do just by flashing a custom kernel..
So far I think the only thing custom roms have that stock doesn't are customised standard apps preinstalled and they also include the overclock in the package. I can remove preinstalled apps with Titanium backup anyway so I'm left wondering what other benefits there are to custom roms.. Maybe someone here can answer this..
Finally.. here's a link to some terminology I found useful
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Terminology
Also here's a link to the icon changer app website for launcher pro
launcherpro.droidicon.com/
Let me know if you go for the custom rom, I'm still thinking about it....
Thinking about the same thing. Probably I will wait until gingerbread gets the custom treatment

Hi,
Today, I had self reboot after a recieved phonecall. the other side ended call and my screen stood black and then rebooted.
I had similar problems before, either this would happen or screen just stood black until I pull out the battery, but I was pretty sure it was because of Roadsync.
I allready explained everything here:
kulen said:
I have crashes with stock SE ROM.
and I suspect it has something to do with Roadsync and exchange mail.
I noticed that receving mail and talking to phone at the same time crashes my phone.
So I suspected on Roadsync
So tried to upgrade it, but it crashed again
then I upgraded ROM (to the latest official 2.1), and it did it again, but just once for now.
I suspected it has something to do with Exchange protocol and (or) this ROM or something. But I tried Touchdown and it didn't crash so I know it's Roadsync problem (because if touchdown can work Roadsync should too).
Unfortunatelly I have to use Roadsync because it's SE included, and touchdown needs to be payed.

This time I didn't recieve a mail and I wasn't looking mail or something when this happened.
I have this:
E15i
2.1-update1
M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-534004015
2.6.29
[email protected] #1
2.1.1.A.0.6
ZD Box task killer reports this applications when my phone is on, and I believe it's all that's active (but it doesn't show SE included apps):
Alarm Clock Plus
Tasker - just installed - no profile added
XDA
ZDbox
I also have Roadsync Exchange and Gmail syncing all the time.
Did anybody experience something similar, and what could be the problem,
SE android, apps, syncing, hardware ...?
It's very important for me to have reliable phone, so I would like to solve this problem.
I can't recreate problem, and it only happend second time since I upgraded software a few days ago.
So if somebody has the same problem please post your experience, maybe we'll come to conclusion easier together.
thank you!
Are you living in stone age dude?
First of all, if you dont want custom ROM (wich I suggest you)
ROOT YOUR PHONE, second install System app remover from market, and remove all stock apps that can be removed. (Dont touch gapps).
You can easily find isntructions here on this very forum, it's sticky!
My opinion is - install some custom ROM - try Elelinux or Floyo v0.20 by Racht. Much more stable and faster than stock.
I had same problem like you. Now it's gone.

Well,
I have had HTC Touch Cruise for a few years and I could throw it away a month after I bought it if there were no XDA and custom ROM's.
So, no I don't live in stone age, and I'm not new on XDA and (or) with custom ROM's
The thing is, as I said, I need phone to be reliable, because of my work.I can't play with it, root it, test ROM's or so, because I'm on call support, which includes weekend and night. so I need to catch some time to play with it.
Until then I must use stock ROM, and I'm just gathering information about X8.
And to be honest I want to use stock ROM for some time until I get familiar with phone and android and I'm sure all hardware is ok.
If this is not android problem but, let's say, Roadsync (or hardware or something else) problem then it could happen on custom ROM's too.
so it would be nice to find out what's the problem, if possible
Thank you for your answer, and please tell me more details about problem you had.
did you just have custom reboots, or freezes or what?
did you use Roadsync or any other Exchange mail?
did you try to find out what it was before you installed custom ROM?
thank you
I didnt use any of it, my phone rebooted frequently. After calls too. And it was running in a background.
So, you want reliable phone...
You must root to uninstall these apps. Try it. Its maybe a solution.
Install custom rom without overclock if you want REALIBLE phone. Belive me.
I'll post you all things you need, it will take an hour of your time.

I do plan to install custom ROM. otherwise I would report this to SE also.
but I thought if we figure out what causes this it could help others and maybe on custom ROM's too if there's the same problem.
I was thinking of installing racht's floyo 0.20, but I will not be able to do this until next week for sure. and I still have to figure out how to sync phone with exchange server after that, because I don't want to pay for a new application and I don't want to use cracked one.
I didn't understand what was running in the background for you, and which applications do you think I should uninstall?.
I can uninstall all but the most suspicious - Roadsync because I don't have alternative for it
and even that I won't risk doing at least until next week
but uninstalling SE included apps one by one and checking if phone still reboots is a good way to start searching for a problem. only thing about that is that it only reboots once in a few days so it would take a looooot of time and I wouldn't be sure.
or maybe I could uninstall all of the apps and use a phone for a few days to see if this happens again. and then start searching for a particular app that causes reboot, if it doesn't reboot without apps
but it's too much time consuming for one man (or even a few) that need that phone for everyday use.
I guess if somebody doesn't post a solution I will have to wait until I install custom ROM.
or maybe really post a problem to SE - I don't believe they will do anything about it but maybe it's good if they know people are not happy with their phones.
Got to think about it
Dare-Devil Inside thank you for your help. I appreciate it.
I already downloaded everything I need a few days ago, except the ROM itself.
but if I need some kind of advice I will contact you
I also remember having some reboots when i used the stock rom...
Believe it or not, from the last month that nobodyatall found the sd card removed problem, custom roms are the best... not to mention dioxanh's modules...
I also believe that custom roms may still become better...

They ARE better.
Look this way: we have fully functional custom roms with NO bugs (ok, tiny bugs like compass not working in gmaps and DSP manager is broken) and it's Froyo-based wich automatically means it's better than stock wich is Eclair. Overall, it's much more stable, smoother and faster to use than stock.
Also, custom ROMs are very smooth now (thanks to doixanh and his MDDI lag fix)
And an another thing: no self-reboots at all... when my phone slows down I use ATK and Speed Boost. (Or Fast Reboot app)
Also I run Cachemate once a week.
@kulen: so, before installing custom, root your phone and remove RoadSync and other unused system apps. (Don't uninstall Google apps, phone.apk and similiar)
EDIT:
P.S.: PM me, but in Croatian please, I'm sick of English
I thought all of the SE stuff would be gone when I update custom ROM?
and what app should I use instead of Roadsync for syncing mail with exchange server?
All apps that I found needs to be payed. HTC has exchange support in mail app so maybe some ROM with sense UI could have it included?
I also like Croatian more but this stuff may be useful to others also, so it's better to write in forum.
I'll PM you when I'll have some specific (and I'm sure I'll have) questions that others shouldn't be bored with.

In stock Email app, when you go to log-in, after entering adress and password, it asks you "What type of an account is this?" - One option is Exchange
So, I think stock ROM also have same (or similiar) email app (not gmail) as custom roms so you could try it and see does it works.
If it works, you can update to custom and use that for syncing.
Basically, our email app also supports syncing, like HTC. (seems to support - try first)
By the way: When flashing custom, there's an option backup. So, just before flashing back up your current OS, and flash new one. If you don't like it, or something you need does not work, you can easily go back to your stock ROM and continue using phone as before.

It didn't ask me anything, and I can only chose POP3 or IMAP from menus.
so I guess it could be Froyo stuff if you have that option? or ROM cookers included app from some other phone that supports Exchange natively.

No, this is stock Froyo app.
I installed custom ROM. Racht's Floyo 0.20
I had one self reboot, but right after I installed it and configured mail so I'll consider it's no problem if it doesn't happen again.
camera doesn't work and screen need some time to become bright enough.
everything else seems to be working. so I'll be using it for some time now.

I had self reboot after a received phone call. but charging time receiving phone call there is no reboot.
I'm experiencing something I didn't have before.
Applications gets closed instead of keep running in background when they get minimized for any reason, either if I press the home button or I get an incoming call.
An annoying example is receiving a call while using GPS navigation: after the call screen comes out the navigation software is closed and when I try to resume it, it will start as a new launch.
I've tried some search, and I understand could be something related to android memory management. But I'm not such an expert, and I don't see thing like this here in the SGS forum, which is (I think) still good enough as a device to be able to manage a call and a navigator both running together. Plus, I didn't have this before.
I'm on 2.3.3 JV3
Thanks.
Same problem here 2.3.5 jvs

Did you change ROMs? Kernels? Anything? Somehow your RAM settings must have changed.
V6 Supercharger script can also accomplish the same thing, in case anyone needs a solution but wants to keep their current kernel.

Well, I can say this behavior appeared after upgrading to stock (official/kies) 2.3.3 (CF-root ed as the previous).
Honestly I can not state from what change depended from.
Anyway, just my humble point of view after facing that, this thing could open a nice discussion on android memory manager, and the strategy/philosophy above.

There is plenty of information regarding Android's memory management—on this forum and abroad—if you're interested in learning.
Did you upgrade from Froyo? If so, that would be why.

This means that Froyo is better in memory usage, at least for the SGS, I guess.
I simply didn't take care about that when decided to upgrade, thinking "SGS is powerful enough". Think I'll have to investigate.
Anyway thanks for all your support.
hi there,
first i want to thank the developer of nemesis' i had my fears before flashing it, due to RTL that i was after. so great, its works fine.....and it runs good....battery life is good also, i like the themes too. but i have few questions:
1. i seen something about facelock option that was posted in the developer section first post where the rom dl is. what is that facelock? do i need 3rd party app for that or is something that i will find hidden in menu?
2. i'm from Israel and i guess since we do not have v30b or c only the v10e stock, i get a baseband unknown, but the phone seems to work fine, i get pretty good signal, and the call sounds pretty good too. can i do something about that? is there a way to find a closebaseband that would work? or should i leave it be like that ?
3. last thing, i like this rom but how the hack do i get rid off the annoying google search bar in my home screen, i had few launcher that had this option in menu and i had this option in few other rom i had fashed before, but here i cant seem to fine how to remove it.
sry for all those questios hope you guys can help those who know this rom.
best regards
Sol
I'm getting sick of the lag on my 4x. Camera tags so long the moment has past, messaging crashes 50% of the time, needing the recent tasks to be brought up and cleared before it will work again, browser is infuriating, and whenever anyone calls, the phone will ring and vibrate, but the screen will take so long in bringing up the 'answer/reject' options that sometimes the caller has rung off before I've even had a chance to answer!
This is on the most recent official 4.1.2
I know there's loads of roms available to me, but I need an un-rooted one, as I use the barclays banking app a lot for my business and it won't work on a rooted device.
Is it simple to just turn off the root mode on a custom rom?
Are most of them quite stable nowadays?

i'm almost sure you can't have a custom rom without root. try using some launcher to get your phone smoother like nova or adw and some task killers like clean master.
AFAIK, Omni is not rooted. You have to install SuperSU separately.
Also OP, this isn't the adequate section of the forum and the title of the thread is confusing too.
Even if you flash a rooted rom, the su app should give you an option to unroot (deleting the su binaries).. However, by doing this you'll lose some rom's features, which work with su permissions.. BTW, @laufersteppenwolf, maybe it's better to move this thread in Q&A section
