Hi,
Sorry about the new thread. Could not find a match.
I have been reading this sites forum for a couple of years and until now have not broken something to the point I can’t find the answer somewhere.
So my first question. I am really stuck.
I have a Telstra HTC Velocity 4G. I followed the instructions on thread SUPERGUIDE (thread #1416836) and they worked perfectly. Thanks to slapshot30 for creating it
.
I did step 1 and unlocked the bootloader.
I did step 2 using the CWM Perm Boot method to get perm root.
I did step 3 using the Pirateghost’s method to load RumRaider BETA 11 (Thread #1418089).
I run on this for a couple of days and everything was great with the Rumraider ROM. Thanks Pirateghost it works great.
And then.. the phone started to refuse to charge. I tracked this down to a faulty battery by swapping it with friends battery. So now I knew the battery had failed unrelated to any of the changes I had done. So I would have to send it back under warranty.
So I then decided to revert the phone back to stock so I would get any issues when the phone was returned for warranty.
To revert back I “poorly” followed step 6 of the super guide. I missed the relocking of the phone by using the “fastboot oem lock”.
I just directly ran the RUU_HOLIDAY_SENSE3_5_Telstra_WWE_2.27.841.6_Radio_3.01.4720 which appeared fine.
The problem now is:
The phone boots to the normal lock screen. I can call the phone and the phone rings. I can send a text or SMS and the phone beeps. I however cannot swipe the screen to unlock it. If the screen time-out I can press the power button and see the lock screen again.
I have attempted to resolve by:
1. Rerunning RUU_HOLIDAY_SENSE3_5_Telstra_WWE_2.27.841.6_Radio_3.01.4720 which did not helped.
2. When I boot the phone if I power it on holding the POWER and VOLUME DOWN it just boots normally so I cannot get it into recovery.
3. Fastboot.exe and adb.exe do not find the handset.
If I plug the phone in the phone appears as “HTC Android Phone USB Device” in windows. So the USB port is working fine.
Any ideas of what else I can try next would be greatly appreciated?
I would attempt to take it back, sounds like maybe you have more than just a faulty battery, if you have had it I think less than 7 days they should count it as a DOA and issue you a new one over the counter.
Yep, HTC have a 30 ELF - early life failure - period wher you can just swap for a new one in store.
Thanks swapped the phone over with no problems.
good to know, thanks
wonder if they will do this with mine? but the store is a Telstra Licensed Store operated by Fone Zone. got phone on 15th feb. Having issues of phone not enabling data network when coming out of sleep and gps constantly loosing fix. I also got suckered into getting FZ's esp.
For the phone not enabling data network when coming out of sleep please check you have the following set.
Settings
Wireless & Networks
Mobile networks
Tick " Tick always on mobile data"
Let me know if this fixed it.
If it locked off just dial a uncharged vacant voice number to force connection. In Aust something like 8888 would do the trick.

The first works but the dialing one didn't where i dialed a number. Was even able to receive a call. Also what about the GPS and the signal strength being all over the place i watched the db level change and all that.
---------- Post added at 04:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:34 PM ----------
now i have to restart the phone to get data back even with always on mobile data. Also saw that Mobile network tick boxed had been unticked then i ticked it it took ages to go white writing. but still had to restart phone to get data back.
nope didn't swap on the spot The system also lost my Tech Bar appointment.
They are going to use the esp express (apparently faster) to swap it hopefully in 2 days hopefully not a referb so i keep using this current phone until they ring me and i go in and just swap it over.
Also noticed when using data its not changing to HSPA no H near the signal icon like my xoom or like just sitting on 3g.
How can I convince people (brother was thinking of getting one) to buy these phones if i keep getting ****? What ever happened to the Quality control? mumble mumble...
Sorry,
It unclear to me, did the settings I suggested resolve the phone not enabling data network when coming out of sleep?
Also the GPS on mine is fine. I grabbed 4 phones and used GPS Test from the market. With all 4 phones on in my court yard which is surrounded by large buildings my rather unscientific the finders where.
HTC Velocity: In view: 12, Locked 8, Lowest 13 SNR, Highest 30 SNR
HTC Desire: In view: 7, Locked 7, Lowest 12 SNR, Highest 26 SNR
HTC EVO 3D: In view: 8, Locked 8, Lowest 8 SNR, Highest 30 SNR
Samsung Galaxy S II: In view: 7, Locked 7, Lowest 20 SNR, Highest 26 SNR
So based on simple test the GPS seems the best of these 4 phones.
Also for LTE if you believe you are in 4G coverage could you please try this.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* to bring up phone info. ( or download “LTE Only”)
Change to LTE only ( This will break Voice calling so change it back!!).
Don’t touch the SMSC setting or you will break SMS in this screen.
This should now change the phone to “4G” for Telstra Build.
The download “SpeedTest” from the market and test it.
Then change back to “GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto”
Let me know how this goes.

yes it did resolve it but its being temperamental. eg it will come out of sleep properly then it wont.
gps not working too well even with clear view of sky. keeps loosing fix loss of gps signal. the time of loss varies to not coming back at all to a few seconds. Ive also discovered that its not switching to HSPA at all. Haven't tested the 4G yet. But anyway ill just have to put up with the refurbishment when they swap it. So much for 7 day DOA swap over counter.
Hi could you please try this to save you the hassle of sending the phone back. It would appear that a lot of your phone default setting have been change or been set incorrectly when you purchased the phone.
Data not returning after sleep.
My suggestion wrong be that the phone isputting the data connection to sleep to save power.
Press Home
goto into settings
press power
untick Save Power
Set save Powerautomatically to say 15% for now.
If you look in save power settings you will have "put data connention to sleep" ticked leave it ticked. My assumption is you are triggering this to early due to the two settings above.
GPS Performance.
Could be linked to Power setting.
Aslo done load "GPS test"
Open it
hit the settings setting button in the app
Update your AGPS
now turn you GPS on via button on the top left hand corner
Go for a walk out side and it should work fine now
You will see all the sats and their levels.
you could run this on a mates phone and compare the results.
Network not providing HSPA
How are you determing this? If you run speed test it should change to "H' and then drop back to 3G when the data drops off.
Also could you force 4G if you are in a coverage area to see if this is working. I am interested incase there is a network problem.
my response is in RED

only get the 3G and arrow symbols it doesn't change to a H symbol. I also noticed the signal strength drop to 1 dot then full bars then waver around.
I also dropped to 3Telstra and got the H symbol but when i started using data it changed the symbol to 3G.

Hello all,
There is a soft fieldtest_157 - it just shows network.
Is there some soft for HTC TyNT II WM6, allows to lock on certain GSM base station by frequency?
Thanks
LoL what are you guys up too?
I work for all the major carriers and i cannot for the life of me figure out why you guys need these oddball software programs. Everything we need at work is provided. Granted it would be cool to have RMT 30 on my phone and be able to plug it directly into the 4.0b modcell but beyond the "how cool am i" part. I dont get it.
Well, its very usefull that you are able to lock your phone on a certain cell, in the case your phone is frequency hopping, for instance when you are standing in a skyraiser your phone will see different cells and will select a different cell each time its about 3 dBm stronger. well standing in a tall building causes that easily. you will see roughly 50 different cells and the 20 are almost the same strenght => causing your phone to go nuts and you are unable to make a proper phone call.
At this point you take control your self and lock your phone on a certain cell and you can call without problems.
lots of oddballs
there's users of random gender who love their phones so much they'll use them for pleasure, such a sick world when you read or see someone gettin jiggy with their phones or electronics. what became of us in today's world of human society?

your phone will make a handover to another cell only if your serving cell condition is bad. let the network handle it...

More real adventure of this option, if user into the traffic jump, or on the stadion all phones connect with the nearest BTS and network busy, you can manually connect to the more far station and make a call. Also hepful if it is more near roaming BTS then mother's - possibly to manually connect with it for avoid roaming extracharge.
Frequency lock
Hi,
Just like what the TS was asking, I too am looking for an application similar to NETMON/FIELDTEST of Nokia that has "Frequency locking" capability that is compatible with my HTC WM6. It is really necessary in my field to do a frequency channel lock specially during commissioning of a new BTS and/or MSS so I can force my location update on that test BTS. I am able to do this with nokia NETMON or with its version of FIELDTEST app by selecting 112 display & entering the "frequency" value of the test BTS.
Is it really asking too much? I am really hoping that our phone can support this kind of application.
Hope to hear from our expert gurus here.
Thanks!
I dont know if this has anything to do with the ROM im running (cyanogen 5 series)
but when i lose service for a period of time, like in my office, then i go outside on the road, it remains without service until i reboot. Anyone else running into this? I find it annoying i have to restart just to make a call
Try toggling on and off Airplane mode. Probably quicker.
Are you running the latest Radio?
Hi,
What radio version are you using?
*#*#4636#*#*
ERE36B 32.24.00.22u_4.03.00.21_2 ...is that the information u were looking for?
i have the same problem! it happened after the first radio update and im running stock rom..i have to go to settings/wireless & networks/mobile networks/network operators/select automatically to fix the probelm..its crazy because it shows i have full bars and 3G and I still can't send messages or call people till i do my fix...any answers??
same problem, i havent updated my radio but am using the latest cyanogen. i usually reboot. thanks for the airplane mode tip.
Moved as not Android Development.
Come to think of this... I had the issue once. I tried toggling Airplane Mode, but it kinda froze and wouldn't let me disable AM. Had to reboot and then it worked fine. Weird, but have only had it happen once. Someone post about this on Google's support site?
My sister has the Nexus also (talked her out of iPhone) and she's having these same issues. 3g dropping to edge randomly while the phone is just sitting there. Can't send SMS and has to reboot the phone. I feel bad because I'm the one that told her to get it and now she's having all these issues... though AT&T really sucks in my state. Her phone is up to date with the OTA updates.

Those are separate issues, I think. I haven't ever experienced those issues... all I've had happen is to go into a building for a while where there was no signal, then after leaving and going outside, not reconnecting to the network. As I said though, a reboot fixed my issue. Not sure about your sister's issue, though it seems some are also experiencing... but not everyone is, which leads me to believe it's either something network related, or specific to a handful of phones. Perhaps a swap with HTC is in order.
It's network+Android. It's even prevalent in good 3G/H saturated areas. Anytime you're switching a speed (EDGE -> UMTS -> HSDPA) all data transfers stop until it's initialized. Unfortunately it seems that Android is handling this changeover extremely slowly and the problem is exacerbated by switching towers (like when you go to a new location). I've found that whenever I travel to a new location I use an Airplane Mode widget toggle when I get there and the problem goes away until I go somewhere else. But like I said it still exists when stationary like if there isn't a really solid HSDPA connection.
It's annoying.
Edit: I should point out that this problem exists with EDGE-3G (first gen Android handsets) as well. Try to do a stream or something like that with one bar of 3G then have it get knocked down to EDGE. 10 to 1 the stream gets interrupted. I know it happened plenty in certain areas with my G1. We're only noticing it more on the N1 because of the antenna placement makes staying on mediocre 3G connections tricky and add in the fact that we're now dealing with a THIRD connection type.
Edit again: I reread my post and it sounds like I'm coming off as "ZOMG THIS IS FACT". It's nothing more than my personal opinion and experiences. Sorry for the confusion.
Again... I think the OP is talking about LOSING SERVICE altogether.... i.e. the bars going grey and the little x showing up above the bars. Not the data connection switchover. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what he's asking about.

Possibly, the OP isn't clear but that is pretty normal for XDA.

Dude... read the post again. It's as clear as day...not to mention the title of the thread!
I've got the same issue too, and I'm with WIND mobile, so its definitely not a T-Mobile thing.
I either have to go to Airplane Mode, or if that won't work or takes too long, then I just battery pull, reboot and the phone is fine.
I've had this happen in different situations... If like the OP, I'm in an area with no coverage and then I enter a region with coverage, the Nexus One won't pick-up or notice that there's coverage and it'll just sit there and say no service.
If I try to manually select my Network/Mobile provider from the settings menu, it'll error out and say your SIM card is not recognized (others have had the same happen to them as well).
I've also had the phone go from full signal to a total loss of signal and signal would not return until I performed a battery pull.

I've never experienced the last problem you described...
By the way, instead of pulling the battery, you should do a soft reboot by pushing power, trackball, and volume down simultaneously. This is easier on your device then just cutting the power. Just bear in mind that it will take a few seconds for the phone to reboot, so be patient after hitting that key combo.

Thanks for the tip man... Will definitely do what you've described from now on.
WIND is having some network issues, so their signal might have cut out and then that must have triggered the loss of signal bug with the phone where it doesn't see to renegotiate the connection.
BTW, does setting it to "WCDMA Only" make a difference for anyone?
I bought an unlocked G1 (Stock Firmware 1.6). When I inserted my sim (2G vodafone) in it, it worked. I could make calls and send msgs. I could also connect using wifi and bluetooth etc.
Later, I realized that I was loosing network randomly (any time-any place) even at those places where I got full signals in my "htc Tornado". When there is no network in my G1 and I try to manually search for network and connect, it says "your sim card does not allow connection at this time". I tried sim cards from same and different service providers but same problem.
I did case study and ruled out following possibilities:
1). Since I tried several other sim cards, there is no problem with my sim or service provider.
2). Since I get full coverage and I can make calls sometimes, so the unlocking was done successfully.
3). I also checked the radio version, it was up to date. But still, I tried re-installing the radio....no luck
4). Even if I don't have network signal, I am able to connect using wifi and bluetooth. So, I "think" and "beleive" that my radio hardware is also fine.
.....Possible problems left:
1). Hardware (loose sim connections etc)
2). Firmware
....I "Rooted" my G1...and upgraded to "CyanogenMod 6 RC1".....But the problem did not solve.
Now, the "firmware" possibility is also ruled out.
Then I searched to various forums and blogs and I found several other people having the same or similar problem. Below are few links:
1). http://androidforums.com/g1-support/5192-g1-no-signal.html
2). http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2845
Then I found a solution (Below is the link - I posted). I just have to turn off/on the "autosync" and turn off/on the "radio".
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8047496&postcount=29
PS. Toggling ONLY radio "off/on" does not works mostly.
Now there are two problems:
1). The solution has to be applied several times in a day to get continuous network.
2). What exactly is happening? How is this problem related to "Autosync" (if it is).
Can somebody please try to understand what is the problem? We need help......
EDIT: If I reboot after connecting to my laptop (having drivers installed) I will have full signals as long as I stay connected.
Is there a apn showing under the networks list? Like T-Mobile US?
Whenever I have network bars...I can see Vodafone APNs in the list but when there is no signal...the apns are also gone.
I also think (not sure) that whenever I am connected to wifi...I don't loose signal frequently and even if I loose....they come back automatically...I don't have to do autosync toggle and radio toggle.
Can somebody please take interest and help me????
Try to find an apn for your carrier and do it manually...see if that helps.
Unlockin' phones always result in manually setting up networks ,apn's and all sorts of things.
So try that .
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
I tried that but it did not work. Moreover, I'm using CM6 rom which have all the APN settings of my service providers. I tried with two different service providers.
Please find a solution for me....My G1 is out of action.....
Have you tried to flash the latest radio?
..Yes...I have the latest radio from the cyanogen's site. I'm running CM6.
Can you plz tell me what commands can be run from adb shell to fetch out various information and logs about network, radio etc, so that I can provide you more details.

same problem here!
since 2 months ago, I'm having EXACTLY same problem as you.
it happens with 1.6 vodafone original, 1.6 roms, 2.1 roms, 2.2 roms... (cyano, theOriginal,superatmel,htcmania)...
with radio updated and all the stuff. I also put it back to original 1.6 with perfectspl via a sapphire image I found in htcmania. I have STOCK 1.6, but I keep having EXACTLY THE SAME problem that you describe.
p.d. I'm Vodafone in Spain.
I'm thinking of taking the phone to the store where I bought it and have HTC fix it.
I have found a sure shot thing......please see if this can help to troubleshoot the problem.
Most of the time I don't have signals. If I reboot my phone the problem does not solve. But, if I connect my phone to my laptop (having android phone driver installed) and then I reboot my phone....I get full signals. I can make calls as long as phone is connected and there is no problem during that period.
Now I don't understand what is the problem and why is it happening?
I've had the same problem here and there. At first I thought it was a side effect from running Froyo on my MT3G that has been carrier unlocked for maybe 9 months but I was wrong..I switched back to Donut and had same issues. So I called T-mobile US and they did a network reset that helped for maybe an hour or so, they explained that maybe my phone could have been "Locked on to a cell tower that was just close enough for the phone to connect to" I just figured I'd play dumb and say OK. I personally believe that it's the cell tower here near my house causing the problem. As of right now my phone isn't acting up so who the hell knows, maybe in my case it has to do with the hspa+ upgrades as of late in my area.
Hey have you tried toggling to just the edge network and seeing what happens?, when my phone starting acting up that seemed to allow me to keep a consistent signal. You mentioned "you tried re-installing the radio", did you mean it was unsuccessful re-installing or it worked but no improvement? You should also check out HTC's developer website if that's the case, they have a good tutorial on reinstalling the radio image.
Good luck hope I had sensible input.
What do you see when you type *#*#4636#*#* into your dialer and select "Phone Information" and scroll down to "Set preferred network type"?
I believe you wanna see "WCDMA preferred" in a normal setting. It will change what it displays if you toggle to edge through the settings menu.

....any word towards solving this issue is useful for me....and thanks....
Earlier I was using WCDMA setting but later I changed it to GSM Only because my service provider does not support 3G. In either case, I had the same problem.
I succeeded installing the radio but that did not solve my problem.
So, what are you doing with your phone now?

I believe you wanna see "WCDMA preferred" in a normal setting. It will change what it displays if you toggle to edge through the settings menu.

I have set it to "GSM only" because my service provider supports only EDGE. I have switched off auto-sync.
Do you have any idea about why it works when I'm connected to USB?

Hi!
I am attaching here the output from #logcat -b radio
plz. see if someone can find a culprit in it.
Thanks
This is normal. Learn to live with it.
I have ****ty tmockery service here. Of our 5 family phones, only my wife and I (G1's) have relatively decent service. I modded ours as listed below. My children's phones, samsung gravity's, have horendous service! They have to walk around to find a spot. All of this is at home... we live in a low spot. There is no chance of us ever getting 3G in this area.
Our G1's used to have the same issues as theirs. I modded our G1 antennaes with psuedo- tesla coils and doubled our coverage! I'm using the xda app right now and can't take or post photos of it, but it works. I'm also running the lasest radio. 23.02 I think..
We live in a brick home. Before, I would have to walk to the far left vorner of our backyard or the frontyard near the road to get enough service to make a call without losing service. I'm sitting in the bathroom right now and have 4 bars! Used to be that I would get one or none right here!
I'll give you basic instructions and will post pics later. I take NO responsibility if this burn, breaks or melts your device. Only do this on phones that have no warranty or the warranty has been voided! IE. I have a bronze and replaced the silver keys with black ones! This will void any warranty you have!!!
Remove back, batt, and sim. Take a wire, your choice of size, and remove the insulation. Sepparate all the strands. Choose one strand. Remember, the thicker the strand, the harder time you'll have keeping your back on the phone. There's very little clearance in there. On the back of your phone, the radio antenna is on the right side. Same side as your volume button. On the lower end of it, remove some of the paint/sealant. 4mm x 4mm maybe... enough to solder on. Set your wire end on this spot. Lay the wire down the phone's back. You will need this to be inside the flat area and not on the curved slope. When you get to the same spot on the bottom, make a sharp turn left. Go close to the sim card area and make it turn up. Near the battery are turn it right. Once you get near the wire again, turn it down. Stay about 2mm away from the wires original path. Continue these turns until you run out of room. In the end, you'll have a wire that spirals to its center in a box fashion. Lay the wire back on the phone and press out any imperfections. Next, solder the begining end of the wire to the spot on the phones antenna. Use caution when soldering! Practice on something before trying this! The phones antenna is held in place by small tips of the plastic going though it and melted down. If you get the original antenna too hot, you will mess up these little tips. Solder the wire with as little solder as possible. Make sure the wire is as flat as it can be with the antenna and is making good contact! Now, make sure the wire is as flat as possible on the plastic. Put a couple of dots of superglue on the length of wire down to the corner. Let these set, holding the wire in place. Don't let your finger become attached to the glue. Use only enough for it to make contact and stick! With superglue, less is best! After this length dries, start glueing each corner of the coil, not letting any part of the wire touch itself. Maintain the sepparation down to the center. After it's dried, you will need to file down the solder to make sure your back will fit. If you can't get the cover to fit, you may need to scratch some grooves into your back cover. When you set the back on the phone, it may make slight indention in the plastic where the wire is pressing against it. If not, maybe use a little chalk to outline the wire and then put the back on. The point being to transfer a line to the back where the grooves need to be made. The plastic of the back is not verry thick! Use caution or you could go through the back! You should see significant gains in signal strength. Mine has been modded for close to a year now. No problems so far.
Pics later today.

....Ok...you put the pics....let's see how scary is this...
.....did you try a signal booster (an after-market thin antenna kind of thing placed under the battery) before doing that??
Hi everybody, new to the forums and new to droid - I recently upgraded from the Propel to the Captivate and so far I am loving it. With all the reviews and forums I read before deciding to buy most of my answers have been answered, but not all.
My phone was loaded with 2.2 and when I registered it with Samsung it showed a build date of feb/11 so I'm hoping that my phone has alot of the big fixes already loaded. I have noticed that the gps code listed on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Does not work on my phone, I enter *#*#1472365#*# and the last * just clears the code out of my dialer... no sub-menu, no options, nothing. Any ideas how to do gps testing?
Other question, I spend alot of time off the cell network and I need a gps that works - which app would be good to use? Searching the app store there is quite a few ranging in price, most seem to have mixed reviews. Google does nothing for me since it needs the network to pull up the maps. Basically when I load up the gps it shows me in a sea of nothingness and trying to scroll the map gives me an error 'need network connection' type of message.
Also, I've noticed what looks like 2 small led's one the face of my phone, just to the left of the speaker and the ugly logo. Are these notification leds or something else?
I don't plan on rooting or flashing my phone for a while... yes yes I know, stock sucks, but like I said I was using the Samsung Propel a couple days ago and now the Captivate - I've got alot to learn and alot to get used to before I switch things around. Yes, one day I do want to switch off of stock software just not right now, thanks for the suggestion though. lol

As for needing a GPS on without using Data there are a few but to be honest if you need it for reliable GPS, then you got the wrong device. The captivate is known for having terrible GPS and it is unrelible at best. Good enough to help you learn a new town but not good enough to get you where you need to go on time everytime. The led are the light sensors. No led Notifications with the captivte at all unless you rom a custom rom and get BLN from the app store that will light up your 4 bottom keys when you have a message.
I do have a stand alone gps, I was just hoping I'd be able to free up some pocket space with the phone - so far, it just shows a blank screen with a blue indicator and says it's accurate 'within 10 meters'. I was hoping I could find a app that provided maps and maybe help tune it a bit. Next time I'm on the network I'll play around with it and see what kind of readings it gives - even if the gps is low end, I'm still liking this phone so far... a whole lot better than the propel.
Thanks for the update, zelendel

One is a proximity sensor and one is a light sensor.
Thanks for the info, I got a couple gps test apps I'm going to mess around with in a while but, I found a new problem that is driving me crazy...
I bought a usb wifi adapter - Asus n13 (b/g/n), in the hopes of using my internet for data and my phone will not connect to wifi. Even driving around town to places that offer free open wifi, my phone will not connect. It finds the wifi hotspots, pulls up the ssid, says connecting, then gets to 'assigning ip' and freezes. On my pc wifi setup, it shows a new connection and 2 seconds later disconnect.
In the phone wifi settings, it keeps showing wifi -connecting....disconnected, back to scanning, connecting in an endless loop - but it never connects. It has the ssid remembered but I cannot delete it or reset it. WPS failed to connect from either end.
Sleep Policy is off
Use Static IP is off
This is a big issue for me since I'm on the cheap att data plan.. I've tried various settings on the pc side of things, all with the same results, I've browsed the internet and done a bit of troubleshooting (ie, different usb ports, different drivers, turning on/off services, etc etc) - I think the problem is on the phone since it does not access any wifi... maybe I missed a setting somewhere?
For now I'm going to dig through the user manual again...
OK, playing around with some of windows wireless settings I've hit a new roadblock... my phone says connecting... Obtaining IP address... Disconnecting... Scanning...
That is one small step closer I think, because it wasnt trying to get an ip address earlier, it was just connecting/disconnecting.
finally! I figured it out!!!
Just for future note.... You have to go into your windows network settings, highlight your broadband AND wifi together - select bridge... restart your pc wifi software and then connect your phone, it should start right up!

You say you do not want to root the phone. But try Launcher Pro anyways to access the LbsTestMode.
1. Sign up/in to the market.
2. Download and install Launcher Pro (it says Pro but there is a FREE version, so dont worry).
3. After install, go to home screen. Long press and choose "Shortcuts"
4. In menu, choose "Activities" (yellow icon).
5. Scroll down and expand the menu "LbsTestMode". Under this is a submenu. Choose the first "LbsTestMode" under this. Yes the main menu and submenu have same name.
6. Choose Ok or whatever, and the icon will be on your Home screen.
7. If you get this far, then you are good.
Open LbstestMode:
1. At the moment you probably should just leave Application Settings to default.
2. Under "Supl/CP settings". And change as follows:
Server: supl.google.com (no "www.")
Server Port: 7276
Secure Socket: OFF
AGPS Mode : SUPL
3. Return to previous menu.
4. DELETE GPS DATA just to clear all previous data.
5. Run "Get Position Test" on top of menu.....
Good Luck !!

Yeah, Google Maps requires a network connection.....BUT when you go into Navigation mode - via the Directions menu and turning on navigation, you get navigation. YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD VOICE SYNTHESIS from the market to get voice guidance. This a good first try, IF YOUR GPS WORKS !!
Or try NAVIGON for Android ....you can buy it but also check here www.mobilism.org (ahem..ahem). I use daily, and I think it is the best routing....
EDIT: Well...about google maps, I think you need a data connection jsut to open the damn software, so you will need Navigon, Igo primo or similar...I AM ASSUMING YOU WANT ROUTING DIRECTIONS and not hiking type positioning. Then take a look at this http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-software AND here http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/
Thanks again for the updates, but it seems like either Samsung or ATT has locked out the Lbs Test mode feature, both of the codes have the same result - after entering the last character it clears it out. I did get LauncherPro and am really digging it so far, but even the lbs tests dont do anything, it goes to a blank screen and just sits there... I have the status bar at the top and a totally blank screen. I even set my phone down on a box out in the yard for 30+ minutes and nothing ever came up - using the google and stock settings for the test. I'm guessing if/when I root my phone the tests will work
I started using GPS Test from Chartcross Limited and GPS Status from EclipSim - both show that my gps is accurate between 16.4 and 32.8 feet - depending on which the way the wind is blowing. I've been browsing some of the other gps/map apps but for now I'll just carry around my standard gps when I need it.
Even with the gps issues, I'm really liking this phone alot. I havent really ran into any other problems yet
Unfortunately since I installed GB stock rom my GPS apps don't find satellites at all. Anybody knows a fiy for this? it worked perfectly on froyo.

For me "GPS status" (market) helps in these situations (topogigi says the following in the FAQ of his thread, but it should work for you as well):
"If you want a quick fix, you have to sit down in an open space with a large slice of visible sky above you. You should have already installed on your phone a really valuable app called "GPS Status". You haven't got it? Fire up the Market, search it and install it: it's free for everyone. Then turn off wifi and turn on wireless data. Ephemeris data download and position data based on cell triangulation are available only with wireless data enabled and they are inhibited by a special setting in the gps configuration file when wifi is on. Tap the app icon, then look at the status bar: is there a small icon radar-shaped blinking on the status bar (upper part of the screen)?
CASE 1) Yes, I see it! It's blinking continuously!
CASE 2) No, nothing changed.
If your fall in CASE 2, there is really something wrong with GPS on your phone. You can try the following workaround, but if it doesn't work there's no remedy other than filing a bug alert in the thread and patiently wait until the bug will be solved.
WORKAROUND:
- Enter Hidden menu typing 1809#*990# on the phone pad
- Select "GPS Test"
- Go to "SULP Settings" and create a new SLP Server with the following parameters:
name: Nokia
slp address: supl.nokia.com
port: 7275
leave certification file and TLS settings as blank
- go back, and flag "SLP Auto provision" as enabled
- select your APN for SLP from "APN Settings"
- go back 2 times and select "Get position"
- select menu-> start
- at this point, you could notice that no satellite appear. Dont't worry, carry on....
- select menu-> Settings then change some parameters as "Session Type" and "Oper Mode"
- go back and select Stop and Start again
- repeat the last three steps until you get a fix and the gps icon in the status bar remains steady after the fix.
If you fall into CASE 1), look at the yellow bars indicating the number and the signal level of each satellite. When the bars will be more than 4 and the length of each bar will be enough to get a fix (the longer the bars, the stronger the signal), the bars will turn into green and you have got the first fix (how lucky you are, huh?). The time it will take is not fixed, though: it depends on weather, correct download of ephemeris data, radio interferences and so on. So, the bottom line is: BE PATIENT! There is no rule of thumb for measuring the time a fix will take. In some conditions, you will get it in a few seconds, in other conditions it will take minutes. Now that you've got a fix, try to move a little bit around. The radar-shaped icon should be steady now and the bars should remain green. If you see the icon disappearing after the fix, you are falling into CASE 2). Try the workaround mentioned before and if it fails, file a complaint into the thread.
DO NOT FILE A BUG ALERT ON GPS WITHOUT HAVING ALREADY TRIED ALL THE PROCEDURES LISTED ABOVE! It will be simply ignored."
Your device is rooted? Then you could try this with CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1066933
Ive had this problem too, on Stock GB ROM.
what I did was installed the 2.1.6 MIUI ROM and edited the GPS settings from there.
The settings I copied was from a Nexus ONE MIUI ROM.
Now it works like a dream.
Thanks for the answers I'll try gps status

And no surprise I have got this issue to, since I updated the stock rom (oh joy, thank you so much LG). However, it would get a lock, then drop the lock (within seconds) then search again for a few minutes.. get a lock maybe.. then drop it within seconds.
Now today in the open air, I cannot get a lock.
So.. I downloaded "GPS Status & Toolbox" and because I cannot stand adverts.. I donated the small amount for the program patch to remove adverts ('GPS Status Donation').
I'm now just running this on my phone (but by a window.. to try and get a lock).
Hopefully I can get it working
Many thanks for the tip, I'll let you know either way #
EDIT: Well... it seems I may have been hasty, as I just turned off the wifi and I think that was stopping the GPS from working lol. But anyway.. is there a hack to get the wifi and GPS working together?
hi
I had the same problems as you, with GPS (and some other) issues - I have always been on stock Rom.
then I got fed up with this and decided to try Temasaks Cyanogenmod7 Kang ROM last week - and have not looked back since!
GPS is working within seconds, new cool lock screen, and everything is running much more fluently! Other problems I had are also gone.
battery time is equal or better, as stock!
/René
Well... I don't know what I've done... some fiddling with the GPS options in the hidden menu, and now it is working flawlessly.
Also... I'm on the google supl, and not the nokia one... and it still works fine.
I have made some other changes anyway.. but regardless it basically just seem to take some fiddling with it to get it to work. I now get locks within about 5 to 10 secs even indoors (10 sats seen, 6-8 locked INDOORS!). Hopefully that won't change if I reset the phone.
My settings are:
GPS session type: 'Tracking' (not single fix)
Oper Mode: MS-Based (to help with initial lock, but then use GPS completely)
Horizontal Accuracy: 30 (Stock was 50.. I think this is in metres)
SLP Auto Provision: Enabled (I don't even know what this means!!? lol)
SLP Server Setting: OPEN(Google) (Although I added the nokia one as well)
Auto Cold Start: Disabled
UPDATE: You know what... I thought it was working... so I reset my device with GPS off. When it came on, I tested GPS, and it showed that it was working and see's the satellites. BUT.. in GPS Status Tool, I see that the GPS symbol dissappears, and the 'update' time does not update. So basically.. it's relying on the cell towers rather than the GPS towers. I turned the phone off with GPS enabled... turned on again, and now it's working correctly with GPS doing it's thang. AFter my experiences in being in an office with a terrible signal... I reckon that there is a setting in the code somewhere that doesn't allow the GPS to be used, or it's forcing it to only use tower's and wifi as a means of location, and ignoring the GPS. Very odd. But it works now, as everyone has seen, it's just a shame that what really is quite a fundamental feature of the phone, LG decided not to fix.
It works, thanks. It is wery cloudy but i got gps in 15sec

try this too,
turn on your GPS.
reboot your phone (with GPS ON)
try again. see if it can lock faster.

That's what I suggested in the update. It's obviously a flaw in the code (thanks LG) that you have to turn the phone on with the GPS enabled for it to work. Now major issue really to leave it enabled anyway, hardly takes any power when not in use, I just wish I knew why this was the case, that you have to have it enabled at power on time. Bizarre.
It's not about being able to 'get a lock', it's about it working at all. If you use GPS status, you will see that it can see satellites and attempt to get your position.. but I reckon what it thinks are sat's are actually the cell towers (When you haven't enabled GPS at boot time).
