Hi,
I have been flashing new firmwares quite a few times, using both Odin and CWM. I have a few questions regarding what actually happened to the filesystem when we flash the rom. Maybe some knowledgeable people here can help answer these:
1) When using Odin to flash the rom, I assume that when using .pit, the filesystem will be reformatted, especially if the partition size got changed, am I correct?
2) what about when we flash the rom using Odin without using .pit. Is the filesystem wiped clean first (or formatted), then new files added? or some old files will be left lingering?
3) what about using CWM, flashing ROM that has "NoWipe"? This I assume, as it was called, no wipe happens, just files being replaced and added, and old files may get left behind
4) what about using CWM, flashing ROM that is "Wipe"? This formats the filesystem, then add new files into it, so no lingering old files?
5) can overcome GB-Stock-Safe-V5 be flashed from CWM, say over overcome 4.1 rom that already have the same .pit. Will it revert the filesystem to rfs? I know I will lose CWM if this can be done.
6) if CWM can't do it, do you think Mobile Odin likely can do it?
Bump..

Hello I just started flashing roms from my phone with astro manager and everytime I download a new rom it doesn't flash the entire rom. It flashes part of it and leaves half if the other roms on my phone. Its not that they are the same because if see all of them before and now they look different and don't have all the cool stuff

Not really sure how you're flashing ROM's with Astro?
Go to the Dev section and read through the guides. You should be using ClockworkMod Recovery to flash. Install Clockwork, reboot into recovery, wipe data, flash your Rom.zip, enjoy.

Where to begin?
I told you astro allows you to download roms to your phone directly, not actually flash a rom.
You should take a step back, I think it would be in your best interest to read more, ask more questions, and understand what you are trying before you try it.
You recovered from one soft brick, but that was only with step by step instructions. Knowledge will help prevent that from happening again
Yes guys I'm sorry, I meant I'm using astro but I'm flashing like im supposed to. The reason I asked the question was to find out how delete all my data work deleting important stuff. In recovery mode, I see delete cache data and delete user data (or something like that) and I didn't want to screw it up, bit i also want all of the rom, which I'm not getting. Please just tell me how and ill read the dev stuff asap

what do you think you are missing? apps? thats by design, you need to restore them with titanium backup.

what specifically do you think you are missing on these roms?
I realize its a stupid answer but I don't really exactly know. The only thing I know is that I had a very long list of apps FROM THE ROM and now I dont. Maybe its just me but has anyone seen anything like this? If not then so be it, close the thread and ill deal with it.

if you have a later build phone that came with froyo on it, odin one click may cause a bootloop. if that happens:
1.calm down
2. at the bottom of the op of the thread i linked there are links to other firmware packages usewd in the pda slot of full odin. get back into download mode and flash one of those.
Or you can just flash a froyo kernel with odin and then flash the froyo rom in recobery and keep the gb boots as they are backward compatible.
I just got my captivate. Before this all I have had is HTC Androids. It was already rooted and I put cm7 on it but I want to try other roms and I can't flash any other ROM. It just stays on cm7. Heimdall works on MAC. Odin doesnt.
if you are going to be supplying answers to noob questions, please try and answer with actual knowledge rather than 'maybes'. your reply that someone needed to use ODIN one click could lead them to a bootloop, but you didnt think about that, did you? then you would be to blame for it when he comes crying back on the forum when hes freaking out about his phone not working after following your advice.

Hi guys,
I did some research on Galaxy Mini forum looking for some guaranteed instructions to flash CWM into a Galaxy Mini device, but didn't find any guide of how to do it.
I did only find some websites on the internet offering some odn files to flash, but I wanted some secure source to download and flash this kind of file to avoid brick the phone.
Did I miss any guide available on the forum that you could provide me the link to it?
Or if you could point out a safe odn file to flash, it would be great!
Thanks in advance for the help guys!

The only thing I didn't understand quite well is why no one talks about that OPS file?
Is that the same as an IMG file?
My fear is to flash with an incompatible OPN into my mobile and mess up everything.
The curious thing is that even for starter guides, no one mentions if the OPS file is safe or not...
Doing some research then, I found out that the OPS file is only like a "Script" that ODIN should follow to flash the device correctly.
Usually OPS files are less than 1 kb with the following content inside it:
Code:
0,mibib
1,qcsbl
2,oemsbl
3,amss
4,arm11boot
5,boot
6,recovery
7,system
8,data
9,csc
10,
So, as long your OPS file is like that, you should be ok.
I was afraid of this, because I have a Motorola Atrix device as Well. And we have a similar process when we want to flash something on a locked device the first time. It is a tool called RSD Lite. But this tool is very powerful and dangerous as it flashes SBF files, which are compressed files with IMG, Firmware, Baseband and etc.... and once you flash an incorrect SBF, you could hardbrick your Moto and kiss it goodbye.
Samsung Devices have some bit differences here... like an unlocked bootloader, which prevents those hardbricks for happen so easily, so I should not worry about that OPS file.
Hope it was worth the teaching about OPS files, guys! And tanks for your help!
sgm has tass.ops file bro

With the newly released ICS update for the GT-P6810, some users will inevitably update their devices and somehow lose root in the process. For those unlucky users, downgrading to HC for root and then re-upgrading with MobileODIN is no longer the only option. There are some options for obtaining root via stock recovery instead of ODIN, but I saw that a few people were having issues. Probably not a problem with the method, but variety never hurts. So here is a VERY direct method of rooting your GT-P6810 on ICS. Please feel free to simplify or improve upon this method and post it here. Progress helps everyone.
WARNING!!: The following steps MAY trigger the counter on your device. However, they didn't trigger mine.
Prerequisites: ODIN or Heimdall
Notice: Some basic flashing experience is required for this. Review the steps FIRST!
DISCLAIMER: The only guarantee I make is that this worked for me. You run the risk of tripping your device's counter, corrupting your device, or bricking your device. If you don't know what you're doing, this is not for you. I accept no responsibility for ANYTHING that might arise as a result of following this guide!
1.) Download the following files:
a) CWM for P6810: http://db.tt/B6mTm9fd CREDIT: locerra
b) root for P6810: http://db.tt/kcuvYG5k CREDIT: mashkuov
2.) Put your device in "Download Mode" and connect to your PC.
3.) Open ODIN and verify that it sees your device.
4.) In ODIN, click "PDA" and select the CWM *.tar you downloaded.
5.) Make sure that you haven't selected to format/partition your device and flash the *.tar.
6.) Upon completion, your device should reboot. Copy the root.zip to your device, and then reboot into recovery.
7.) In recovery, flash the root.zip and reboot.
8.) You should now have root in ICS!

Okay fellas. Just a quick survey. How many of you were able to successfully execute the steps in this guide without difficulty? If problems were encountered, what were they? Did anyone trip their flash counter by using this guide? Did anyone soft or hard brick by using this guide? I'd really like some feedback.
On a second, but similar note, how easily were you able to follow the guide? What do you think I should add to it or remove from it? Should I make it into a full, click-by-click, newb-friendly guide? Should I trim the fat and simplify it? Or should I leave it as-is? I'm flying blind here. I've written small, simple, easy to follow guides for stuff like "build.prop" edits in the past; but I've never written a guide for something that involved ANY kind of flashing. So any critique would be very welcome. I've always felt that the biggest of XDA's strengths was its community's standard practice of openly sharing. So now that I've shared my guide, I would like to, in GPL fashion, open it up to corrections, additions, modifications, and improvements. So if you've got anything, anything at all, please go ahead and post it.
I thank you all for your time and hope this guide has been a help.
Thank you,
Edward (Mister_Mxyzptlk)

Another option is just to flash ICS using MobileOdin with the EverRoot option. You may even unselect the "recovery" partition when doing so, and you will keep both root and CWM. Of course, this doesn't help if you've already flashed with Odin, but for those who haven't upgraded yet, I believe this is the best option.
YMMV, I'm not responsible if your device melts down and conjures a demon, etc etc etc.

This guide is for people who are ALREADY on unrooted ICS. How is your suggestion in any way helpful to those people? Unchecking recovery is only helpful if you use CWM. If you use stock recovery, you'll still have stock recovery. Also, MobileODIN doesn't always preserve root. If preserving root fails during the update, there's nothing MobileODIN can do. You'll have to re-root yourself. I've seen this happen first hand. Usually, you have to downgrade, re-root, and then use MobileODIN to upgrade again. This guide eliminates the need for that. If you upgraded and lost root, FOR WHATEVER REASON, this will get it back quickly, and easily.

Not everybody is already on unrooted ICS. I know I searched for ways to root the tablet even before I bought it; it's very conceivable that people who are thinking about upgrading to ICS will search for this. If they have root on HC, there is no need to lose it and reinstall. I just pointed this out (and MobileOdin is really one of the best Android tools out there, among with Tasker and TB).
About this corruption, I've personally never seen it happen, and I've flashed more ROMs on my S2 using it than it's healthy. Even if it happens, what do you lose by trying the easy route first (and, if needed, reflashing root through recovery)?
Sorry if I offended you in any way. All I wanted was to help.

You didn't offend me. This is a simple guide for achieving root on the 4.0.4 build for the 6810. This is XDA. If someone searches for a way to update a Samsung device, they're going to find MobileODIN. If XDA were a department store, I could spit in any direction and hit a MobileODIN thread. Don't overcomplicate things. If you're on unrooted ICS, this is as easy as it gets. Furthermore, everroot is a paid option. My method is free. There's no need to go buy an app for an option that simply isn't needed in this case. If you want to write a MobileODIN update guide, go ahead and do it. This is a development thread for a very specific scenario; not a thread to compare preferred update methods. Take care.

Since my issue is relating to not being able to get into Recovery mode at all, i'm going to move it to a separate thread.
P.S. your instructions were very clear and made perfect sense (having previously rooted a SGS i9000), however linking to Odin in step 2) and specifying how to get into recovery in step 6) might be useful for newer users?
