I'm planning to receive the At&t Galaxy Note the day they're available, and since i'll be giving my old Nexus S to my mother, i will need to familiarize myself with the various methods of rooting and flashing ROMs to the Note, as i can never stand using stock ROMs.
With the Nexus S, flashing a ROM was as easy as unlocking the bootloader using fastboot (insanely easy), flashing CWM over using fastboot, and from there, using CWM to install the ROM zips, with kernels and gapps following the same route.
From what i've discerned, the process for the Galaxy Note is similar, but odd, as Odin is involved.
So my question is this. To install a ROM on the Galaxy Note, my first step is to root the stock ROM, flash CWM using Mobile Odin, and then use CWM to flash ROMs from there?

Yes. You'll find easy dr.ketan's rooting guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360 . Just follow the instructions to the letter, and you're good to start flashing custom ROMs in a minute.

I'm currently on rooted LB1. I rooted using the 'if nothing else works use this' downgrade and upgrade method using mobile odin.
While flashing, and retaining root, odin injected Cwm into the firmware. Can I now use this to flash a custom firmware? I quite like the look of the criskelorom.
Do i need to update this Cwm, and or flash a cf root kernel first? Or can I now flash roms and kernels using Cwm to my hearts content? Using Cwm won't increase the binary counter right?
The Cwm requirements don't seem too clear to me, and I'm naturally overcautious. I just need to know if there's anything else I need to do before I go ahead and start flashing custom roms and kernels using the Cwm injected by odin.
Many thanks.

You just need to read and follow the flashing instructions in Rom threads very carefully, that's all.
I m on stock gb rom and m not rooted.
For installing the aokp ics rom do i have flash the overcome gb stock safe zip for re-partitioning my system?or should i skip that step and start flashing the overcome kernel?I m new to flashing so a bit confused.
Tried flashing the overcome gb stock safe zip via odin today and ended up bricking my tab.Somehow i got the stock rom and flashed it via odin and my tab came back to life
PLZ help.

Refer to this post for the overcome full guide with images:

No way a stock rom work and GB-stock-safe-V5 bad. Usually it is just a bad download.
Find a sha1sum checker to make sure you get a good download.
Follow the guide including what to put in each of Odin's input box.
Additional comments:
You do need to be rooted before installing any custom ROM.
even to install Overcome 4.1?
I never need to root from stock.
I rephrase, you do need to be rooted before you install any custom rom from recovery mode.
You don't need to be rooted if you install any firmware stock or customs via odin or Heimdell.
So if you install the overcome using .zip file (via CWM), yes you will need to be rooted, or you will get write access failure (think of it in windows, some installations you need admin access).
So get the overcome .rar (or .md5) file and install it via odin.
Din know that.

i am new to rooting and flashing etc.i have a completely rooted galaxy tab p1000(GSM version) running stock 2.2.the only problem is i tried flashing
cwm through odin and CF-Root,but odin always shows a fail and the device goes into soft brick state.i have unbricked the tab,but am i not able to flash cwm because i haave a locked bootloader(i have seen in many forums that say that 2.2 on the tab has a locked bootloader)should i try updating it to 2.3.3 through kies and then root it and then flash cwm through odin?.or should i use the overcome method??(please posta link of the instructions).
also which rom is better cm9 or aokp.
can i also follow the procedure given in the cyanogen mod wiki(pleaase google the link, xda wont allow me to post a link)
another victim of CWM flashing.
I keep repeating myself: Use OVERCOME method
it is 100% tested.
Sorry to point back to your own thread:

I had my reply there about overcome method that you can follow.
Let me know how it goes.
Its been sometime since I have bought the note. I was wary of installing custom ROM's due to the various hardbrick issues. I have installed custom ROM's on other android devices (Galaxy S, Dell Venue) hence do have some basic knowledge. I am on stock rooted Indian ICS ROM :silly:
Two questions before I start:
1. I am sitting on a potential dangerous ROM, and I know it. Has there been any light on EMMC hardbrick bug by Samsung, (I have not tried any OTA updates in fear of bricking the phone). I am on Android version 4.0.3 (baseband version N7000DDLP4).
2. Is the CWM hardbrick bug sorted?
So I intended to follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Flash stock GB ROM through ODIN.
2. Root and install CWM (Is CWM the only method of installing custom ROM's)
3. Install the custom ROM (I was looking at Liquid Black ROM based on CM9)
sounds ok
use pc odin to flash GB tar file
CWM is the only way to install/flash zip files of custom roms that are available here.

1. No rom is dangerous, it is just the Kernel, change stock kernel with some safe kernel and you will be okay.
2. Yes, use safe kernel like Speedmod or Notecore, they have safe cwm too.
Maximum of custom roms can be installed using cwm recovery only, but look for Alliance rom, it can be flashed with odin too.

Wouldnt the custom ROM packages include the kernel too? If I am installing from stock GB ROM, are you infering the kernel will be what Samsung released when it came out with the GB update?

It does, that's why I said flash safe custom kernel and you will be good on stock rom too!, so basically its just the kernel which is faulty and no issue with rom as long as you use with safe kernel. You can also flash stock firmware using mobile odin and can inject custom kernel at same time.

Yep you are good to go as GB kernels are safe. You can also
1.If you are on stock ICS : Root it and install abyss kernel (Its a GB kernel so your phone wont boot).
2.Reboot recovery & Wipe data
3.Install your CM9 ROM.
Best of luck

Well referring to my given procedure (If you follow it) after flashing Liquid Smooth you will have its kernel (CM9 kernels are safe for wiping) as far as in case you consider flashing TW custom ROMS just make sure it has a safe kernel (Speedmod or notecore) before wiping.
Thanks, the inputs are appreciated.
A final question, I read that stock ICS rooted through CWM.zip is unsafe. Unfortunately I had rooted my stock ICS installation the same way, phone is working fine till now. Anything I should be wary of before proceeding (yeah am nervous about bricking the device).
I am planning to install a pre-rooted GB ROM as mentioned here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20963718&postcount=2
I am planning to download the N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3 -----------United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)----- Download version, and flash it as posted by Dr Ketan.
I will follow the method to root here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
My apologies for the noob situation (new to Android tho a veteran iphone jailbreaker) but I did try my best reading lots of threads to seek the exact info I need:
Things I've done:
1) I got my N7000 with stock ICS 4.0.4 (Kernel: ZSLPM) yesterday
2) I followed some online resources in my local language forums and used both CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip to "root" the phone
3) I then started researching for ways to flash to JB rom but found out info regarding possible bricking hazard with stock ICS kernel and CWM.zip
appreciate if anyone could point me the safe way to :
either
1) Remove the CMW.zip and Su-Busybox-installer.zip to unroot the device and make it back to virgin state? so I can start everything over again and follow Dr. Ketan guides for rooting with safe kernel (I read we could flash the unstaller but that also need to put me back to Recovery, safe to do this under CWM.zip?)
OR
2) how could I flash my current setup (rooted already with CWM.zip) with a safe kernel ?
Thanks very much for any guidance.
Regards,
Anthony

So you mean after I root my N7000 with CWM.zip and SU-busybox-installer.zip I have actually already flashed my kernel and rom in the phone already? I thought I have only rooted it but the kernel and rom are still untouched? please advise and thanks for responding.

You can go to Settongs>>About Phone & under "Kernel version" you will be able to see which kernel you are using (for ex: my Note shows HydraCore_v5.34 which is a custom kernel).
So, if you are still on Stock (i.e., un-safe kernel), use PC Odin & flash custom kernel (use Dr. Ketan's guide). Make sure *NOT* to wipe/factory reset when you are on stock kernel. In case if you want to unroot, then also you have Dr. Ketan's guide in the same post.
Start using thanks button rather than posting thanks.
Even if u r on stock rom and stock kernal to unroot flash them back using odin

CWM.zip is a tenp recovery.. it doesnot stay in the system after reboot. thou su-busybox stays... but if the phone has booted up that means u have root access now...
just install the philz kernel from here for ur rom. this is a safe kernel and u will be able to do wipes. this kernel can be flashed from stock recovery.

Thanks for the advice.
Things are all good now after I got stuck with my first attempt flashing to Abyss which I later found out it doesn't support ICS then I flashed it to Hydracore then after that flash it to RocketROm and I'm now one happy user

Next time do not use CWM zip to root your phone. Use Dr Ketan's method of rooting, because its dangerous.
