So I've got a Sprint-branded Optimus Black. Rooted the device via SuperOneClick, and installed Clock Work Recovery Mod. Unable to flash any rom, get error "error in /sdcard/<romname>.zip Error Status 1". Checked MD5s, all match.
So I decide to restore to factory defaults. I go to Settings, Privacy, Factory data reset. When I do this, the phone only restarts to Clockwork Recovery mod. It will only boot into CWM unless I "wipe cache partition". After this, I can boot into stock OS.
So what the hell is going on here? My goal is to get CM7 running on this device.
What do I need to do to get this going?
I didn't see any solutions in my forum search. I would appreciate some input.
Sprint-branded eh ?
are you talking about Black or Maquee ?
cuz they're both twin brother, but Marquee runs in CDMA

But though doesnt have anything to do with booting problems, he only wouldnt have network.
Your issue can be solved as follows.
As u said, u want CM7 on your device, download the nightly version, that you like.
boot to recovery, make full wipe (factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvic, wipe battery stats (both under advanced) ), go to install zip from SD card, choose zip, install it, reboot and enjoy
But as it seems, that your not that familiar with modding, flashing and so on, better first read some on those topics, in order to get the needed knowledge
I've already attempted to install CM7. My first post explains this. Let's review the situation:
* Rooted
* Installed CWM
* Attempted to install CM7, got status 1 error.
* Attempted to wipe phone, but it only boots into CWM.
I'm not sure what the problem is. I want to restore the phone to stock, and install CM7.
Anyone got a solution? If I can provide any other info that would be helpful, let me know.

where did you flash CM7 from ?
Rom Manager ? or Recovery ?
it boots into CWM,then, can you wipe it from CWM ?
Did u follow all my steps? Download (maybe try a different nightly version), Boot to CWM, Wipe EVERYTHING, as mentioned above, flash zip and everything should be fine
I've tried flashing cm7 both via rom manager, and directly in recovery. Same error (status 1).
It seems I am somehow unclear about my problem. Here are some images:
If I try to factory reset via Settings, Privacy, Factory Data Reset, the phone restarts, and boots into ClockworkRecovery Mod.
https://imgur.com/pFTh6
It will not boot to the Android OS until I perform "wipe cache partition".
If I try to flash cm7 (I've try five different nightlies) via CWM, I get this.
https://imgur.com/BNMsp
Again, I have full root. I have CWM installed. I have tried several versions of cm7, checked the MD5 on each one.
What the hell is going on here?

I've performed a full wipe from CWM, yes. I still get the same error.
Update ur cwm... u have version 3.x i think 4 or 5 should be normal... so go to rom manager, select install cwm and install latest version. It might also be, that ur phone isnt compatible with cm.
Is it really p970, or is it maquee, or p970h? Check it pls ;-)

If I go to Settings, About Phone, it is listed as Model # LG-LS855.
If I go to ROM Manager and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", it detects the phone as a "LG-LS855". Then it throws up an error that says:
"LG-LS855 does not have any officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet. Have you installed a ClockworkMod based recovery manually?"
To which i can answer yes, or no.
So, how should I go about updating my CWM if Rom Manager tells me it isn't officially supported?
Just checked and my version is v5.0.2.6
Edit
I just checked your pics and it seems you have lg marquee and there are no nightlies availiable yet...
Check here:

Maybe google lg marquee cm7 and see if you can find a port... otherwise ur bound to stock rom i guess...

Interesting... Thanks for your help.
So since I have a Marquee, I'd like to remove the CWM I have installed and just stay on stock with root.
How do I remove CWM?
The best probably is, to simply flash a fresh version of your software via B2C, then noone will see it has ever been rooted.

it will restore your phone back to stock
after nvflashing v10b back on your phone, you can restore your backup if you like to. root and clockworkmod must be installed first though. To install clockworkmod you can also download the clockworkmod recovery img and replace recovery.img in the nvflash files. this will install cwm directly and you don't need to root your device.
You don't need to convert back to ext3. I'm not even sure if cm7 uses ext4...
The reason why you are not able to restore your backup is because of some bug in cwm with restoring boot.img I think..

I've tried to look everywhere for info on this issue and the closest I got was in the developers thread where someone was going to flash from Fresh 2.4 to CM 6. Apologies if I'm completely dense here.
There seem to be tons of ins-and-outs that I'm not yet hip to like hboot versions and clockwork vs fastboot and etc.
I am running Fresh 2.4 and I'm getting the "Low on space" trouble that others have noted. I downloaded cyanogen 7.0.3 to my SD and installed ROM Manager. I am able to boot to ClockworkMod and can select the zip to install from. After CM installs I reboot and can't get past the boot screen. (As a side note, I notice the videos all have a white background with black HTC while my boot is gray HTC on black background.)
Is there something I'm missing? The only thought I had was to revert back to completely stock ROM and try to start all over again. Thanks!
1. Are you using any other mods/tweaks - Firerat's, Data2ext or such?
2. Did you wipe everything before flashing CM? Or what steps did you take before flashing CM?

1) no other tweaks. Just put Fresh 2.4 on and started using it.
2) In the ROM Manager I backed up after flashing to ClockworkMod. I've used that backup to get my phone working again. I also checked the boxes to wipe everything as I told it to install cyanogen from the SD card. I've also tried booting to recovery manually and scrolling to wipe/restore to factory before trying to install cyanogen from zip.

I still get a persistent gray HTC text on black background boot screen.

Redownload cm7 again. Could be a bad dl. Especially over 3g it could go bad so try wifi. Or try aosp's 2.3.4. Its a very stable rom with less cm bloat but still has it's features.
Also don't flash through the rom manager clockwork app. Doing everything from the recovery works better IMO. My guess is that's why it failed. Because you flashed it through the app and not in recovery. In the recovery it's says install zip from sdcard. Select that and find your cm download and load it there. Then your gapps. Bet it'll work after that.
If it doesn't load or doesn't boot up after that then its your clockwork recovery. In the manual recovery at the top it'll say what version your using. The latest is 2.0.5.7 I think. Personally I use a different recovery but for your use the latest will work just fine.

I've downloaded 7.0.3 twice and also 7.0.0 just for fun. All through my home internet onto a macbook pro and transferred via USB to the SD card.
I'll try again and make sure to only use the manual recovery. Also, thanks for the aosp suggestion!
It's a no-go on everything.
Formatted boot, system, data, and cache. Wiped dalvik cache and battery stats. Tried to install a fresh copy of CM7 and also tried AOSP 2.3.4 with same steps.
The only thing that doesn't stall at the boot screen is my backup.
There must be something about versions that is wrong here. Something isn't playing nice.
Excuse me sir. Don't mean to but in here. But I think you missed the part were matt suggested you reflash your recovery. Its good advice. Whatever your current recovery is try reflashing it, repeat the necessary wipes and flash your rom of choice. You can reflash your recovery threw adb or if your s-off threw an hercimg.zip or if you have a nand you can boot into you can do it threw terminal or rom manger.
#Root/Hack-Mod_Always*
Personally I bootload to flash any recovery but also I'm s-off. Its extremely easy and all you have to do is rename the file and move it to the root of the SD card. Using terminal emulator is also very easy if your not s-off. If your still unsure about some of this just keep asking us. More than willing to help. Here ill make it a little easier. Go find the s-off thread and make it happen. Ill throw you my renamed version of green lantern recovery. Trust me it works perfect. Still clockwork. Just different. Then all youll have to do is bootload the recovery then reboot to recovery. And you already know how to do that.
1st go to that s-off link
Dropbox link to greenlantern
http://db.tt/ORAwPdX
The file is named
greenlanternHERCIMG.zip, just delete the greenlatern part and it's good to go.
Heres the s-off thread. All you need is the zip in the bottom of the op. Then flash it through manual recovery as always now
Get the recovery working first then we can help fix the flashing rom if it continues

*I use bootloader just to be a dork really and watch it load for that 2 seconds it takes then reboot, but who's phone doesn't like a reboot .. honestly.

now after smartflash done you can
1. setting your phone like language, location, dll
2. restore your backup(if you use titanium backup) if not then you must do install again your

there is the tutorial how to flash using smartflash
I suspect your initial problem was that you didn't wipe the phone before installing the MoDaCo ROM.
Before I install a new rom or restore a backup - I always make an (I call it) extended Fullwipe. So I can be sure that the system is fully clean.
Here is the way how to do it:
Go to CWM recovery and run the following steps
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
->advanced
wipe Dalvik Cache
wipe Battery Stats
<- Go Back
->mounts and storage
format /cache
format /data
format /system
<- GoBack
After that you can choose "Install zip from sd" or "Backup/Restore"

You have the steps right there in the first post. I'll leave some explanations
You need cwm (clockwordmod recovery) first. The easiest way to install it is via rommanager https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager&hl=en. Use rommanager to flash cwm.
Once cwm is installed. Then proceed.
1. Place cm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-p880.zip and gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip in to your internal sdcard
- Download cm http://get.cm/get/jenkins/25315/cm-10.1-20130417-NIGHTLY-p880.zip
- Download gapps http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
- Move the files to your internal sdcard
You need to be in cwm recovery for the next steps. To do this you need to power off your phone, Hold VolUp and Power Button at the same time to power on your phone. Wait till you get to cwm recovery console.
2. BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA with CWM Recovery
- In cwm console select backup. use vol+/vol- to navigate through the menus and use power button to select the option.
3. In CWM Recovery make wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache, format system
- These options can also be found in cwm
4. Flashcm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-p880.zip from sdcard
- Still in cwm. Select Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> navigate to where you put cm-10.1-20130416-NIGHTLY-p880.zip
5. Gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip from sdcard
- Still in cwm. Select Install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard -> gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip
6. Done
- Reboot
I'm not an expert, but that is how I did it.

Actually, the first thing you must do is unlock the bootloader. For now, the only sure versions are EUR-XXX (and to be clear, it's not enough that you installed the Euro-Open FW, your phone must have the software identified as EUR-XXX - for instance, german sim-free phones will be identified as 262-000, even if they install Euro-Open FW, and they don't seem to be unlockable as of yet).
So, check the software version (at system settings -> phone info -> software information -> software version) and, if it's Eur-XXX or something similar, you can unlock the bootloader.
If you're using the all-in-one tool, you just have to follow the instructions on it's thread to unlock the bootloader.
Only then can you install CM with the method akosierwin provided.
Okay i followed the steps and installed clockwork mod via the rom manager...BUT!
If i boot into recovery it says: LG Security,ERROR boot image signature, 5 seconds shut down something something...
Whats that all about? thanks for the fast reply's!
you need to unlock your bootloader first
Yep, unlock your bootloader first.
Here are the steps for that

Okay i unlocked the bootloader ( when im in the S/W upgrade screen it says unlocked at the top..) i have clockworkmod installed but i cant install anything... All the zips give: assert failed, status 7.. Now im in a bootloop. I can go into clockword mod but thats about it. I have tried other zips than the Nightlys from cyanogen but nothing works. WTF

In the general section there's a thread callled flashable CM 10.1 FIX P880 (or similar).
The status 7 error occurs because of a little line (p880 instead of x3 for device recognition).
Install the CM from there or try to reinstall CWM through ROM Manager (should be latest and working)
And don't forget the GApps (from goo.im or the thread with the fixed CM)
EDIT: Link to the fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2238814

In the steps for installing CM, there is the advice to do a nandroid backup of the existing system!
Is it possible, after wiping and installing CM 10.1, to restore only data, so I would have all my Apps and Userdata back, or would this cause problems with CM 10.1 settings?
Has someone tried this already?
Is CWM after wiping and installing still present?

CWM ist still installed after CM 10.1 flash.
If you want to have your apps + data back install titanium,
though I don't really know about restoring a backup on CM
(but it's a different android so I think it wouldn't work)

Thanks, but I tried with Titanium Backup on V20a (after wiping and installing V20a over V10h) and not all Apps was correctly restored, settings of system, all the screens of Nova Launcher, the Widgets and their settings and many more was wrong or not restored, so I tried with restoring only "data" from CWM-Backup and it works perfectly...
Anyone tried this on CM 10.1?
Glad that it worked
Didn't know that.

I'm following this tutorial on how to root my Orange UK GT-I9305 LTE Unlocked phone running 4.1.2.
Everything goes fine with Odin the phone reboots, then I unplug and turn off my phone, and boot into recovery mode only to find it hasn't installed and Android system recovery 3e is still there.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I did follow them to the letter, does installing CWM Recovery actually root the phone or is "rooting" the phone a different process entirely that's required for installing CWM Recovery?.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE
Model Number: GT-I9305

All depends upon the package but most CWM are root and recovery .

Ended up using Auto-Root which seemed to work no problem.

I initially had a rooted stock ROM that i was using for ages then upgraded to a custome ROM but for personal reasons decided to go back to stock.
Loaded stock ROM with intention of rooting only to get rid of bloatware, but not one of the ODIN Flash recoveries work at all, not one, so like you ended up using CF Auto and that worked but now im still stuck with Stock Recovery. I dont understand why none of the recoveries flash when they did before.
Cheers
trouble with cwm/ twrp
Hi all. Yes I'm a noob and I wouldn't ask If hadn't tried a plethora of ways to install either cwm or twrp.
It took me a good hour to find this thread so hope I'm in the right place.
Ok I used odin to root and cwm didn't stick so still on stock rec. However I used framaroot to get super su working and titanium says I'm all rooted up. Other apps only for root also work.
I've since tried using goo manager and Rom manager to install cwm or twrp and both say unsupported.
I've searched these here threads and found a few with same problem namely when using odin cwm wont stick and android reinstalls stock recovery.
So I'm a bit stuck, I'm rooted but have no cwm or twrp.
Any help would he much appreciated.
Try Philz recovery .
I have never used a custom recovery on this phone but i think i read somewhere that when flashing by odin the thing to do is not let odin reboot the phone. untick the reboot option. then when odin is done flashing and says pass shut down the phone . dont let it boot up.once phone is off you can boot into recovery by vol up+hom+power Here is the tricky part. as soon as you see the white samsung start to load aka bootloader screen release the power button but continue to press volume up and home. you should see the circle with the hat symbol. and enter into clockworkmod once in clockwork mod you will need to wipe data cache and dalvick DO NOT WIPE SYSTEM then flash a custom rom zip that you have previously copied to either your extsdcard or sdcard0 at the same time you probably will want to flash gapps as well. the thing is if you boot up before entering recovery . the default native recovery from samsung will take its place back. maybe it is easier to just flash rom manager in the play store. flash clockworkmod and then boot into recovery from the app itself. I9300 is supported . dont know about I9305
thanks !

Thats exactly how I understood the cwm not sticking problem. I have tried rom manager and said not compatable with my device as did goo manager for twrp. I think odin is the only way I get it to stick. So il flash in odin and il try to get into cwm as it boots and wipe those two files you mentioned.
But then can I just boot up as normal ? or will android try to reflash its stock rom ? Damn my phone for being so difficult
I only ask because I haven't decided what CR to use yet (or even looked for any). I was gonna get it all ready first then learn how to install a CR - 1 thing at a time i thought.
Anyway thanks for your help :good:
JJEgan I found Philz thread to be helpful but something I feel Im just not ready for. Im new to this and although the updated cwm looked cool there were just to much going on, maybe for a later day.
Thanks all the same :good:
wiping data plus cache plus dalvick cache is done to prepare your phone for the custom rom that you are going to flash. the wiping is to clean those partitions because if they are not erased you will have problems. especially if you go from one android version to another or touchwiz to aosp. it is done so you get a clean install with minimal issues. if it is not done you will most likely bootloop. effectively it is a factory reset. all of your apps and app data will be gone so you do not want to do that unless you have backed up your apps . however sometimes google automatically installs them after you sign in.
I am not sure why clockwork mod does not stick but if you copy the rom you want to your phone install clockworkmod with odin and then use clockwork mod to flas the rom and gapps package then factory reset you will not have the stock recovery anymore. but this has to be done without booting into android stock . PLEASE FOLLOW THE FLASHING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. AND UNDERSTAND ANYTIME YOU FLASH OR MODIFY YOUR PHONE YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY AND POSSIBLY CAN CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE. BEST OF LUCK!

Also philz recovery is highly recommended
HERE IS SOME VERY GOOD READING http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362743&highlight=philz+recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344125
think I got it lol
Ok that's sounds good. However I've just read the threads you linked and now I've got to back up my imei and NV files first or il loose them when flashing. The procedure is all there and seems doable for a noob but i read some peeps are having trouble just doing that. I really wanted to root/install a CR regardless of the troubles cos I want full access and more importantly want to learn all the ins and outs so I can get the best use from my phone so glad I found this forum cause I'm sure I would have bricked my phone otherwise.
Might I ask if I've got this right tho?
1: backup imei/NV files
2: use odin to get cwm to stick using your method
3: boot into cwm to wipe data/dalvick cache and gapps
4:use cwm to flash a CR
5:factory reset
I think that's right?

1 BACKUP EFS FOLDER(IT CONTAINS imeiAND SERIAL NUMBER AND OTHER NETWORK SETTINGS) MAKE AT LEAST 2 BACKUPS ONE FOR EXTERNAL SDCARD AND ONE TO KEEP ON YOUR PC
2 INSTALL CWM RECOVERY USING ANY WORKING METHOD. byTHE WAY PHILZ CAN BACKUP EFS.
3 IN CWM RECOVERY MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP OF YOU CURRENT ROM. I FORGOT TO TELL YOU THAT ,THIS IS IN CASE YOUR FLASH FAILS YOU CAN RESTORE CURRENT ROM FROM BACKUP. ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE A FLASH
4 IN CWM RECOVERY WIPE DATA, CACHE , AND DALVIK CACHE
5 IN CWM RECOVERY FLASH ZIP FOR ROM AND FLASH ZIP FOR GAPPS "GOOGLE APPS"
6 BOOT ANDROID THIS MAY TAKE UP TO 10 MINUTES FOR THE INITIAL BOOT. BE PATIENT. IF IT BOOTS YOU ARE DONE
7 IF PHONE DOES NOT BOOT THEN IN RECOVERY WIPE DATA AND CACHE AND DALVIK AGAIN
8 STILL NOT BOOTING FLASH ROM ANG GAPPS AGAIN
NOT BOOTING? RESTORE NANDROID
FACTORY RESET=WIPE DATA AND CACHE
DONT EVER WIPE SYSTEM UNLESS YOU HAVE A RECENT NANDROID. NANDROID IS GOOD BUT THE OLDER IT IS THE MORE LIKELY IT IS TO GET CORRUPTED
ALSO IF YOU GET FORCE CLOSES FIXING PERMISSIONS USUALLY WORKS FOR THAT.
SOME ROMS ARE FLASHED IN DIFFERENT WAYS .ALWAYS FOLLOW THE DEVELOPERS INSTRUCTIONS
i had the same Problem before.
I Just disassembled the battery after a full-wipe for few minutes and it works... i don't know y, but that was the only way... ?!
brilliant thanks!

Thank-you for all that,I really appreciate it.
Can I ask the difference between the apps nandroid manager and titanium? I've backed up with both and wondered if i really needed to? The nandroid backup was nearly 3gb!
Also I was gona backup with qpst for imei and NV files but then read its only for US versions? Will the backup of efs folder include those?
honestly i really dont know what the differences are. l do not use custom recoveries or custom roms. i dont use titanium backup .Any rom I flash i get from sammobile.com. one reason i do not use custom roms is that none can support mhl. I use a monitor and bluetooth mouse and keyboard . without mhl I cant mirror my screen so i always stay with stock roms. i use Xposed framework for modifications.
